It's not because of collectors, retail still had more active players running content. They're just in m+ instead because m+ is better for gearing than raiding
M+ participation is dropping like a rock though, plus people generally do around 4 runs (sometimes more) per week so it's a bad indicator of player numbers to begin with
The number is based off total number of boss kills (so 1 player killed 1 boss)
25 man raid kills 1 boss you get 25 parses
classic raids have more bosses because they're padded with a ton of filler, the bosses are easier so more full clear runs and classic is full of alts running gdkps
Retail numbers don't include LFR. People don't alt run raids nearly as much in retail because mythic+ exists, and retail content is hard enough that you might spend weeks progging a boss to get a single kill (so 20 parses) instead of 1 shotting 14 bosses
I wouldn't be surprised if people run a degenerate number of alts to fill in GDKPs in classic too.
Classic is a low effort cashgrab and always has been. Just because it's popular doesn't mean Blizzard is going to devote more resources to it, that's not how they operate.

How different are raid mechanics on FFIV and ESO compared to WoW?
Never played ESO so I can't comment on that.
In FF the mechanics are generally pretty advanced with several different patterns that the entire raid has to deal with on the fly. In wow the patterns don't change, only the people targeted. So in wow you can squeeze by with a couple morons because they might just not be targeted at all by mechanics while in FF everyone needs to know every mechanic since everyone is targeted.
As for which is harder, here's a video of the best raid team in wow wiping more to one single FF boss than they did for an entire expansion's worth of raid content in wow.

After having quit the game 3 years ago, i played other games and this game now looks the way everquest or ultima online looked to me back when i still played WoW.
About the only people who can stand the incredibly outdated and ugly WoW graphics are the people who never play anything else. The game looks like absolute trash by modern standards, their graphical updates can only conceal the 20 year old engine and textures by so much. It's insane to me that WoWgays spend time collecting armor sets and stuff in the game when they all look so hideous.
I think what gets me about the situation is that people still make WoW porn, right - 3D renders and whatnot. But the game is so shitty looking that what they have to do is, essentially, make brand new models in Blender that just sort of mimic WoW's style but are much nicer to look at, with two or three times the polygons and better textures. Pic related isn't even a great example and there's way better looking models out there but most of it can't be posted on a blue board.
It's like, looking at the porn, you see what WoW might look like if it wasn't terribly antiquated and running in a 20 year old engine.

Complete dogshit design. To make M+ good just cap it at 25, after you beat +25 you unlock a special version of that dungeon that is a single set difficulty boss fight from that dungeon with no trash. They choose 1 boss from each dungeon and turn it into a very hard 5 man raid boss that is impossible to get carried through. Each season they use a different boss. Beating all 8 of these bosses gives you the title.

Took me a little to put the game down but I'm glad I did.
I still miss what I had with the game. It just took me some separation to realize it was gone and not coming back.
Used to be a pretty consistent player from Vanilla -> Wrath. Off and On Cata -> Legion. I only played BfA a little and gave up after the first patch. I think I understand why they made such high-detailed cinematics for the old soldier storyline: a swansong. Shadowlands looked like fricking garbage and from what I read the story was fricking abysmal. The reveal for Dragonshit drove the last nail in the coffin that I'm not going back.
I still listen to the vanilla ambient music here and there, remember the roleplaying I used to get up to in the cities, and the grinding for mount rewards (the drake mount in BC and the Shenlong in Mists). I also remember immediately tuning into Cheat! to watch the WoW themed episode (multiple times).
There will never be another MMO that will hook me like WoW did. I tried with Age of Conan, GW 1+2, Warhammer Online, City of Heroes, Final Fantasy, and DCUO. But WoW really perfected it, and thus spelled it's doom.

It's a little hard to say because they don't give any official numbers or anything and Classic is rampant with bots and RMT.
I imagine, too, there's some overlap because a lot of people just raidlog.
If I had to take a wild guess though I'd assume Classic is more popular simply because it gets more coverage and it is what people tend to talk about if they talk about WoW.
We'll almost certainly get a Cata Classic announcement soon, coinciding with its Steam release, and it'll be somewhat of a big deal for like three weeks.

It's a kind of fun way to get around. But there isn't anything to actually fly to that is fun or even beneficial. Even if they add it to the old world, what're you gonna do, fly to Kara faster to not get the mount drop again?
Dragon riding was fun before you leveled it up. When you first get it you had to actually think about your stamina/movement, but after spending 10 minutes getting the glyphs is just becomes a fly hack. So I guess bravo for Blizzard for adding 10 minutes of genuinely fun content and immediately ruining it.
