Personally I think it's that people realized that the Classic Era is NOT same as Seasons which get deleted after a while, but a long term Classic (Vanilla) server.

Don't get me wrong, retail is even worse and more dead but I have literally 0 interest in Blizzard's WoW, including classic. It will likely live on. TBC has big dick energy by being the first expansion, but seeing how things turned out with wotlk-classic I don't think any post wotlk expansion can have as big of a draw.
Right now (and foreseeable future) The biggest competitor to Era are the private servers but they all seem a bit scuffed.
Tempted to resub and just start a brand new character, my biggest fear however is that the endgame is going to be just like it was when it first re-launched - gDKP and dungeon speedruns with world buffs.
Personally I like gdkps and deathrolling, but with this many players I'm sure one can find a larpguild to raid with.

gdkp incentivized gold buying and it made it nigh impossible to find a legit PUG. I was in casual guilds where people openly defended gold buying and buying boosts, basically doing everything in their power to game the system and reach 60 asap, at which point they'd game it even further by buying gear.

Why did you go to the most extreme end immdediately? The HC Mode IS community made, Turtle Wow is community made, all those private servers are community made. And what they do in OSRS is that they brought the old game back and yeah, it had issues as it's old so they patched the game with community voting on what gets updated and now it's this whole new thing that people can still play. I subbed a few months before Wrath classic came out specifically to play it but got so burnt out from how shit TBC was I ended up never touching Wrath.
The only areas I had fun in were Vanilla, if the Vanilla servers are alive again and this isn't a flash in the pan I might resub just to play it and actually be able to do MC and AQ without it being a total waste of time.

It's insignificant, EU Classic servers at their absolute peak were absolutely packed with bots. The economy was beyond busted, I remember copper bar stacks going for 15-20g and I'd imagine it isn't much better now.
Maybe I missed the bots by not playing SoM but I don't remember bots being a problem at Classic launch.

Launch was mostly fine but around late phase 2 was when they started becoming an issue due to large amount of gold in server economies. Couple that with gold farmers and later boosters and by the time naxx came around, servers were extremely fricked if you weren't on those high pop ones.

Some feel it's unoptimal to see people with -servername after their name, and I personally always pick someone from my own server (Firemaw) over any outsider for raids.
if i happen to go back, it will most likely be on classic servers. after you put in your addons everything is so streamlined and convenient just like wotlk, but you also have a very closed and simple world to explore and pvp in.
wotlk is almost too much for long term playing, as you'll inevitably hit a while and realize that all thats really left to do is grind. where as classic wow is just fun to walk around in and explore and if it has enough cocurrent players there will always be something cool going on in any section of the world.

How does HC work? The add-on deletes your character for you?
It announces your death to other addons and guild chat. Also it keeps internal log of your character ID or something.

I don't think era server were ever dead, at worst their population was on medium-high.

I doubt it will last. This is the same playerbase that rushed through the vanilla content at breakneck speeds and are only coming back because both Retail and WOTLK Classic are in the lull period for content.

They are all clustered so Firemaw if you are EU to not be singled out as minority.

Functionally no. Just check it's part of the firemaw cluster.
Some feel it's unoptimal to see people with -servername after their name, and I personally always pick someone from my own server (Firemaw) over any outsider for raids.

if i happen to go back, it will most likely be on classic servers. after you put in your addons everything is so streamlined and convenient just like wotlk, but you also have a very closed and simple world to explore and pvp in.
wotlk is almost too much for long term playing, as you'll inevitably hit a while and realize that all thats really left to do is grind. where as classic wow is just fun to walk around in and explore and if it has enough cocurrent players there will always be something cool going on in any section of the world.

If it was SoM then it got booted into Era, if it was the first classic launch then it likely got booted into TBC. What happened to if after TBC got shut down I don't know.

it might just be deleted. At the time of TBC, you had a choice of moving to tbc or staying on classic era. I don't know if it automatically moved to era at that time, or deleted. You'd have to resub to check.
Played hardcore all the way up to lvl 20 but got bored because of all the fricking mob camping. Literally had to wait for hours for a single mob to spawn.
