Why do redditors always zero in on the good gameplay mechanics when they want to remove something from a game? It never fails. They'll find the most interesting part of a game and b***h and moan about it until the developers listen. Not like they should listen to us either though.
I miss this game. Tried to log-in to my old account recently and it was blocked for "security reasons". Easy fix but I couldn't be assed to dig out my old keys to confirm it's me. It would just make me sad anyway with a dead guild roster with people offline for year and empty towns.
I see them seethe and beg to either nerf something or make everything else stronger to match said thing in multiplayer PVE games all the fricking time... Usually ends up getting nerfs because they cry to the devs so much about it.

Deep Rock Galactic is a prime example of this, there was hardly that many things that were actually overpowered, and even if it was just one aspect of a weapon the entire weapon's stats just got tanked as a result instead of that specific thing.

someone on /wowg/ compared some of the well known NA servers between WoW and FFXIV during primetime hours and the stormwind/orgrimmar cities were ghost towns compared to ffxivs limsa/uldah.
i feel ashamed for even trying that game during Shadowlands. i checked google trends and it really is fricking dead. the number of active players doesn't even seem that far off. there's no fricking way WoW died like this.
It really is fricking dead. I remember looking up shadowlands season 1 mythic+ data, and there were only like one million characters (note: not accounts) who had done at least a +2 run (so they would show up on the raider io site).
Not everyone raids/does mythic+ on retail nowadays. The only raiding I've done past LFR is flex SoO back in 2014, been playing since TBC. Never touched a mythic dungeon besides legacy ones either.

As someone who was dumb enough to sign up for FF14 through Steam instead of the standalone version, let me tell you I'm definitely in the minority and get made fun of for it all the time. I hope to god they introduce service account migration one day.
Now you have to go through 2 levels of account DRM and use a launcher to launch another launcher. If you ever happen to have an account management problem it's potentially a pain in the dick if customer support tells you to take it to the other accounts support instead, and then back again.
Plus it cucks you from having the choice to buy expansions from other storefronts, when otherwise you can usually preorder them at a discount from GMG.
At best there's no difference, but at worse it's an unnecessary complication.

It's a lie due to how Chinese "subscriptons" work. Chinese buy game time, not a monthly subscription, and until they use said game time, they are "subscribed" to the game. So there are tons of Chinese accounts sitting at 1-6 hours of playtime that their players long since abandoned, but until that game time is used up they count as being "subscribed" to the game.
This is how WoW can have 4.8 million subscriptions but only 34,000 people actively playing the game at any point.
I can't imagine scuffed mobile-tier SL is any better. And keep in mind, this is where most of the people probably are larping a social life and not fricking around in shitty gmod-esque fashion.

A high quality community can keep a game going long after it was declared dead and it's deceased status isn't inherently indicative of quality (I mean, Fortnite and Minecraft are some of the most popular/profitable games of all time and they suck)
But WoW deserves to die, if only because it was maliciously slaughtered by the devs and what made it good is no longer appreciated by the gaming masses
Focusing on player counts is an unfortunate side effect of every AAA game and its mother including live service cancer. It made sense when MMOs did it, but then they added it to every game under the sun and morons were willing to pay for it.
Any game that calls itself a live service has that as a requirement.
If the playerbase is low in a live service game, then that game failed as a live service.

buddy it was missing 1/3 of the content it was supposed to have at launch, and another 1/3 of the content was so buggy that it was practically unplayable, and the end game raiding was so poorly designed that getting enough people to actually get to the city boss would crash the entire server from there being too many concurrent connections in a small zone.
It wasn't a good game. It was awful, full of so many bugs it would make New World look polished.

Heroic Sepulcher had 144,448 parses over the last week.
Thats just people who are part of a logged raid group (a minority) not counting any LFR raiders, people who don't raid at all like PvPers or pet battlers.
Classic Sunwell had 1,706,316 parses over the last week.
Concurrent at all times means the lowest amount across a timeframe. If WoW has a similar pattern of players as FFXIV on Steam, that's ~50% from peak numbers, so ~70k peak.
34k concurrent across retail and classic seems impossible, but for retail alone it seems unlikely, but possible
40-50% difference between high and low point is about normal for those kind of games. Whenever the difference gets smaller in online games you can expect there to be quite a lot of bots.
Just look at Lostark which dropped from 1 million players to 120k after they banned pretty much all the bots recently. That game never had any fluctuation. It was peak at midnight NA time and peak midday NA time

A WoW is the more expensive of the two games. You can get a XIV sub for like 7-9 bucks if you only really play one character while a WoW sub is nearly twice as expensive. A new XIV expansion is also like 40 bucks while a new WoW one is 60.
It's basically a copy and paste from GW2 mounts with a few changes. Looks kind of fun but I imagine the gimmick will wear off after a while. Here's a video of the new dragon race trying it out in old zones which has less abilities and options than actual dragon flying will have.

Playing XIV through steam is based. I remember I bought stormblood then changed my mind and refunded it in like 3 hours. If I had done this through any other way I would have probably either been rejected or had to wait a week.

When I played xiv back when ShB was new I slogged through 200 hours of a low quality renpy tier kinetic novel MSQ that I absolutely hated for the most part and when I asked /xivg/ (erp central) and /wowg/ (only place where you can discuss XIV) what to do they both told me "you dont have to be subbed all the time like in wow because this game respects your time". After trying to make my own fun it didnt take long to realize that was just a code for "the game cant even provide enough content to warrant a subscription". The Ivalice raids are some of the best content in the game. The Nier ones had a few fun fights, but were largely mediocre. The new one is fine, but needs to be tuned better because people are skipping the interesting mechanics already.

And barely anyone stuck around, they gave ARR a chance, HW was eventually a high point but it nearly killed the game a second time before the patches. Stormblood was just okay, the patches were amazing, Shadowbringers and Endwalker were two home runs in a row. XIV 2.0+ hasn't experienced anything near the shitshow WoW has for multiple expansions.

He literally is. He nearly had a full meltdown on stream when he was getting filtered in a XIV savage raid. Pretty much had one in WoW when he couldn't clear Sepulcher normal mode and said he gets stressed out because his chat laughs at him.
He never learned how to take care of himself. His dad is somewhat rich. But when his parents divorced and his mom got the house he sticked with her and she was anything but a perfect rolemodel. She used his dads money exclusively and didn't work so all she did was watching TV and playing WoW with her son. So naturally that became the only life for him. Doing nothing except staying at home and playing WoW. All while the house began to fell apart because his mom got too old, sick and fat to take care of it. Not like she did much in the first place.
He meanwhile kept financing her addiction because he couldn't possible start a fight with the only person close to him which ended up getting her killed because guess what - smoking while being connected to an oxygen machine is a bad fricking idea.

The sad part is player numbers don't matter. A single moron will spend 10 subs worth to play the game because they're addicted. They don't need to change shit because of this. They can be lazy as frick and morons will still eat this shit up.
Heroic Sepulcher had 144,448 parses over the last week.
Thats just people who are part of a logged raid group (a minority) not counting any LFR raiders, people who don't raid at all like PvPers or pet battlers.
Classic Sunwell had 1,706,316 parses over the last week.
I think Elder Scrolls Online has a higher playercount too, like half of the playerbase bought the game outside of steam as well and there's a sizable pop on consoles too.

xiv uses wow's foundation but xiv is nothing like wow.
questing structure, the way consumables work, the way gear works with bind on pickup and ilvls, the way daily quest progression works, the dungeon finder, raidlockouts for loot, the way mounts and specifically flight mounts behave, the fricking jump button that was specifically added to copy WoW after 1.0, the endgame raiding focus and the raid encounter design, the trinity group structure, the party frames, glamour/transmog systems, the way threat works, gems/materia.
man there is so much this is just from the top of my head.
FF14 is a blatant (shitty) WoW clone and it has way more in common with the game it apes than it does to set itself apart.

Blizzard scumminess makes subs a poor metric now.
See the offers/mounts/transmogs they give for 6 month subs to inflate numbers? Going off of concurrent players reveals that these "subs" aren't playing the game, just subbing for the new cosmetic dopamine rush.

5mil subs would be massive for the current state. this would be like WoD levels.
and given those numbers the active players also wouldnt be that low.

Looking at the XIV loadstone data we have around 1.7 million characters that are currently ingame.
Characters - Not accounts.
If we trust the player surveys around 20% of all XIV players have an alt they also use for endgame content. If we remove those alts that makes around 1360000 endgame accounts. Not counting anyone currently playing through the story for the first time - Not counting free trial players.
For WoW we don't have comparable numbers because Blizzard keep everything closed and shut. But we do know that TBC Classic has TEN TIMES the parses that Shadowlands has. Which means that Shadowlands is pretty fricking dead while Classic is thriving on its corpse.
However: TBC Classic has recently closed a few realms while XIV is adding more servers/worlds to their game. And the trailer for Dragonflight has around half as much the views that Shadowlands had initially.
They should be carried by nothing. Just thrive by releasing a good selection of decently made games across all boards.
But right now only XIV and mobage make money for them. Other hits like Triangle Strategy are too low profile for them to matter and things like Nier are the exception - Not the rule.
They make too many "The Quiet Man" or Balan Wonderworlds.

Live a Live is a decent remake but again: a remake
Diofield could be decent. It has the Awakening writer behind it and while i personally wouldn't consider Awakening the pinacle of JRPG writing - It was popular.
Valkyrie Elysium looks like shovelware.
Forspoken has no identity - Feels like corporate business suits designed it. I expect it to crash and burn.
Star Ocean could do well but its yet another low profile release.
Harvestella has the potential to kill SoS and Rune Factory - i give it that

It's a lie due to how Chinese "subscriptons" work. Chinese buy game time, not a monthly subscription, and until they use said game time, they are "subscribed" to the game. So there are tons of Chinese accounts sitting at 1-6 hours of playtime that their players long since abandoned, but until that game time is used up they count as being "subscribed" to the game.
This is how WoW can have 4.8 million subscriptions but only 34,000 people actively playing the game at any point.

This doesn't *have* to be wrong. I play multiple games that have been abandoned by the devs or have very low total players (more tabletop games than video but whatever). A high quality community can keep a game going long after it was declared dead and it's deceased status isn't inherently indicative of quality (I mean, Fortnite and Minecraft are some of the most popular/profitable games of all time and they suck)
But WoW deserves to die, if only because it was maliciously slaughtered by the devs and what made it good is no longer appreciated by the gaming masses

Concurrent at all times means the lowest amount across a timeframe. If WoW has a similar pattern of players as FFXIV on Steam, that's ~50% from peak numbers, so ~70k peak.
34k concurrent across retail and classic seems impossible, but for retail alone it seems unlikely, but possible
40-50% difference between high and low point is about normal for those kind of games. Whenever the difference gets smaller in online games you can expect there to be quite a lot of bots.
Just look at Lostark which dropped from 1 million players to 120k after they banned pretty much all the bots recently. That game never had any fluctuation. It was peak at midnight NA time and peak midday NA time

Playing XIV through steam is based. I remember I bought stormblood then changed my mind and refunded it in like 3 hours. If I had done this through any other way I would have probably either been rejected or had to wait a week.

When I played xiv back when ShB was new I slogged through 200 hours of a low quality renpy tier kinetic novel MSQ that I absolutely hated for the most part and when I asked /xivg/ (erp central) and /wowg/ (only place where you can discuss XIV) what to do they both told me "you dont have to be subbed all the time like in wow because this game respects your time". After trying to make my own fun it didnt take long to realize that was just a code for "the game cant even provide enough content to warrant a subscription". I dont even play ESO anymore I just shitpost full time

The Ivalice raids are some of the best content in the game. The Nier ones had a few fun fights, but were largely mediocre. The new one is fine, but needs to be tuned better because people are skipping the interesting mechanics already.

For WoW we don't have comparable numbers because Blizzard keep everything closed and shut. But we do know that TBC Classic has TEN TIMES the parses that Shadowlands has. Which means that Shadowlands is pretty fricking dead while Classic is thriving on its corpse.
However: TBC Classic has recently closed a few realms while XIV is adding more servers/worlds to their game. And the trailer for Dragonflight has around half as much the views that Shadowlands had initially.

I prefer ffxiv but let's not pretend 24man raids are challenging content
They're designed to be beaten with random pickups, like dungeons or normal raids.
This is why I make sure to play new alliance raids day 1 so I can actually feel something again.
I always hope shit goes sideways in my queues, it breaks up the monotony of doing things the same way every time. Had an absolutely wonderful time with a run of a10n in raid roulette today with people stepping on the traps and racking up vulns on the chainsaws and charges.
