Reporting of subscribers ended at 5.5 million, barely a third of the way through WoD which was the expansion most known for having no content. Subscribers absolutely continued free falling well below the last 5.5 million subscriber report. On top of that, China was still included in those sub numbers back then, and has since been removed from that region. Many migrated to other regions, but there still has to have been many others that simply dropped wow because of that as well.
Basically the second graph with hard numbers is a total clickbaiting asspull. It's amazing to me that it's being paraded about like gospel and there's next to no questioning of it.

I hadn't played WoW since BFA, and I genuinely thought I never would again. I got roped in to playing DF and it's actually a breath of fresh air, the game is actually fun again. they overhauled talent trees entirely so you can build a spec you like or just import the meta ones if that's your preference. dragon riding is fun and the new continent is nice, more collectibles now than there ever was if that's your bag, and there's a big emphasis on transmog now. I was surprised by how much I actually like this expansion, and I was a pro hater. I can't say anything about the story though because I couldn't give a frick, I've skipped every cutscene and ignored all the dialogue but from what I've seen it's pretty lame on that front. lots of female brained quests like rescuing small animals and shit, and the horde and alliance are friends now despite all the awful shit theyve done to each other, noone seems to give a shit

What’s the endgame?
We know that WoW Classic's playerbase was about 50-60% Chinese. It's reasonable to assume at least 95% of those players are now gone with the game's permanent shutdown in China a year or so back (very, very few are going to start brand new accounts with VPNs in other regions).
Similar numbers can be assumed for Retail, but we only concretely knew China's Classic ratio.
Either way it's basically impossible that the game has over 7 million subs AFTER the Chinese exodus, that "leak" is total horseshit.
The chart obviously doesn't include China because we'd see a drop in early 2023 if it did, the average is probably based on just NA+EU+TW. It also makes sense that they didn't include CN because the drop from the NetEase falling out had nothing to do with the content of the talk.
The biggest issue is Bellular's numbers, which the second chart is based on, is basically him guessing based on the last known subscriber numbers in WoD, which included China's numbers. Without a Y-axis or WoD numbers to compare to this chart, it's effectively worthless, unless Blizzard wants to tell us what their expected sub count is.

The NetEase partnership was reported as $750 million annually while actiblizz revenue in 2022 was around $7.5 billion. So 10% for all of actiblizz with the lower sub fee which was about half the NA sub and whatever cut NetEase takes. I could see CN easily having been like 25-40% of Blizzard's MAUs considering unknowns like what was the $750 mil breakdown between Activision/Blizzard/King.

Blizzard stopped reporting subscriber numbers after WoD. The trend has been downwards since WoW hit 12m peak during Cata. I don't believe for a second that blizzard managed to recover, even with the Classic boost. That has never happened in any other mmo. After they hit a peak and start going down, the trend is always down, even if they have some short term upwards momentum due to a new expansion or new version of the game.
The problem with this chart is that there aren't numbers given. The bottom numbers were added afterward by a Youtuber. Starting at Legion is a problem because we don't know what the sub count actually was during Legion. For all we know this could be much lower or higher.
Almost certainly lower because of the CN sub change, but we don't know how much lower. Could be 100k, could be 2million, but there should definitely be a vertical line between the last 2015 report and Legion Launch.
Hardcore was absolutely massive, but after two months the novelty of questing through Darkshore for the tenth time wore off and now it's basically dead.

But the prepaid card system was still in place up till 2018/8/4 before it officially shutdown so you had the option of going prepaid (if you had bought it before Legion) or monthly. Blizz could still claim those non-expired point cards as active sub all the way until 2018.

Reporting of subscribers ended at 5.5 million, barely a third of the way through WoD which was the expansion most known for having no content. Subscribers absolutely continued free falling well below the last 5.5 million subscriber report. On top of that, China was still included in those sub numbers back then, and has since been removed from that region. Many migrated to other regions, but there still has to have been many others that simply dropped wow because of that as well.

I hadn't played WoW since BFA, and I genuinely thought I never would again. I got roped in to playing DF and it's actually a breath of fresh air, the game is actually fun again. they overhauled talent trees entirely so you can build a spec you like or just import the meta ones if that's your preference. dragon riding is fun and the new continent is nice, more collectibles now than there ever was if that's your bag, and there's a big emphasis on transmog now. I was surprised by how much I actually like this expansion, and I was a pro hater. I can't say anything about the story though because I couldn't give a frick, I've skipped every cutscene and ignored all the dialogue but from what I've seen it's pretty lame on that front. lots of female brained quests like rescuing small animals and shit, and the horde and alliance are friends now despite all the awful shit theyve done to each other, noone seems to give a shit

We know that WoW Classic's playerbase was about 50-60% Chinese. It's reasonable to assume at least 95% of those players are now gone with the game's permanent shutdown in China a year or so back (very, very few are going to start brand new accounts with VPNs in other regions).
Similar numbers can be assumed for Retail, but we only concretely knew China's Classic ratio.
Either way it's basically impossible that the game has over 7 million subs AFTER the Chinese exodus, that "leak" is total horseshit.
The chart obviously doesn't include China because we'd see a drop in early 2023 if it did, the average is probably based on just NA+EU+TW. It also makes sense that they didn't include CN because the drop from the NetEase falling out had nothing to do with the content of the talk.
The biggest issue is Bellular's numbers, which the second chart is based on, is basically him guessing based on the last known subscriber numbers in WoD, which included China's numbers. Without a Y-axis or WoD numbers to compare to this chart, it's effectively worthless, unless Blizzard wants to tell us what their expected sub count is.

The NetEase partnership was reported as $750 million annually while actiblizz revenue in 2022 was around $7.5 billion. So 10% for all of actiblizz with the lower sub fee which was about half the NA sub and whatever cut NetEase takes. I could see CN easily having been like 25-40% of Blizzard's MAUs considering unknowns like what was the $750 mil breakdown between Activision/Blizzard/King.

couple of weeks ago I was interested in the game, I played the tutorial missions and it was ok, then I watched a streamer play the latest dungeon and it was a visual mess I couldn't understand and they also had this weird fricking voice telling them what to do at every second.
Sounds like the endgame is not for me so I'll stick with casual mmorpgs instead.
Classic's a fair bit more casual at endgame, takes longer to get there though, if a long journey suits your fancy.
As long are genuine sub numbers and not being fudged (e.g. a single sub counts as 5 subs if a player is playing retail, SoD, HC, Plunderstorm, etc), it looks like WoW is back on track.

I don't hate Blizzard at all. However, the graph starts in 2016. For most of us, the big heyday of WoW was in the mid 00s. Pre-Cataclysm. Which isnt even included on this graph just "Cataclysm Classic" which is the re-release.
I don't hate WoW at all. I am glad if people are still having fun with it. I certainly don't hate Blizzard or the people who work there. They can make whatever games they want to make (or are getting a paycheck to make). I am not the kind of person who starts getting mad just because they included a gay charater or whatever. HOWEVER. It is dishonest to cut off the graph in 2016. It needs to start at LEAST 10 years prior to that.

This was a talk intended for other game devs. The chart starts at Legion because the fundamental design of WoW shifted significantly in Legion and hasn't changed much aside from supporting systems since then, comparing trends with earlier expansions isn't very valuable in that context.

Blizzard stopped reporting subscriber numbers after WoD. The trend has been downwards since WoW hit 12m peak during Cata. I don't believe for a second that blizzard managed to recover, even with the Classic boost. That has never happened in any other mmo. After they hit a peak and start going down, the trend is always down, even if they have some short term upwards momentum due to a new expansion or new version of the game.
The problem with this chart is that there aren't numbers given. The bottom numbers were added afterward by a Youtuber. Starting at Legion is a problem because we don't know what the sub count actually was during Legion. For all we know this could be much lower or higher.
Almost certainly lower because of the CN sub change, but we don't know how much lower. Could be 100k, could be 2million, but there should definitely be a vertical line between the last 2015 report and Legion Launch.
Explains why they made season of discovery. Their biggest boosts and sustains seem to just be from re-releasimg vanilla.

Hardcore was absolutely massive, but after two months the novelty of questing through Darkshore for the tenth time wore off and now it's basically dead.

Blizz doesn't want to commit to the vanilla+ experience because they can't monetize the everloving shit out of it like retail, and they know that the dedicated vanilla/SoD players are hostile to things like the WoW token.
Boosts, Tokens, faction/race swaps, and cosmetic mtx are all in Wrath Classic now, it's only a matter of time before it makes its way to Vanilla too.

Why do people believe in the numbers blizzard provided as if they're 100% true? They've been caught lying before, it's not like they aren't boosting their numbers by using terms like "MAU" rather than "subscriber" at this point for example. 5mill is the LAST NUMBER REPORTED by Blizzard at basically HALF WAY through the expansion.
We basically don't know the overall performance of WoD to draw any numbers out of it for Legion, but we all can guess that it is anything but upwards, which also bring the Legion 'overall' performance lower.
