i quit in tbc originally and came back for BFA/shadowlands because i just wanted to play wow again (have not tried dragonflight)
the raiding is fun if you can get into a guild, made some good friends just joining a random guild and raiding with them. rest of the game is just grinding mythic+ (which i enjoyed on some characters and not others)
my overall opinion is if you like raiding and are playing with friends or don't mind finding a guild and making new friends retail is good
If the only thing you want in life is to troon out in M+ and raids than go for it. Otherwise go back.
The only thing really worth caring anymore is raiding and I guess mythic+ if you can find people who aren't pieces of shit.

im not a PVPer but i've heard bad things about the state of arena these days. and i think rated battlegrounds are pretty dead, but that's just what i've heard someone else can chime in.

The community for the game (which you’ll have to work with obviously) is one of the worst in gaming.
Just play the free trial and see if you like it.
The trial is pretty bad because you level at the sped of light, there's 0 challenge and everything is handled to you. Scaling sucks as well.
