Either it should have immediately balanced itself out at which point there wouldn't be any fake past because it becomes the future, or if the future is continuously dependent on the past, the immediate act of traveling to the past would completely destroy the future based on the fact that now theres an extremely unstable element inserted into the past, causing reality to either converge or turning time into just more space.

The current lore of the warcraft timeline is that there's one true timeline that is already set in stone from start to finish. Sometimes small threads of alternate possibilities will fray from the rope, but they quickly dissipate unless a Bronze/Infinite Dragon does something to stabilize it(the WoD version of Draenor exists in a secluded pocket dimension maintained by the Hourglass that players empowered on the Timeless isle, for example). If too much frays at once though, all reality can unwind, so the Bronze dragons also have to make maintain the splits instead of leaving them to burnout on their own.
It's pretty asinine because they keep rewriting how the time travel works and just make new stories without giving a shit about what they wrote before. Any dead souls from split timelines just merge into the main one in the prime timeline afterlife too, and it was previously said that in all alternate histories Garrosh becomes the greatest Warchief and ours was the only villainous one. So then that infinite amount of heroic souls were erased from existence because the primary one ashed himself while pissed about Thrall.

Most likely time is an illusion and an infinite number of possibilities are already happening. Time is only perceived as linear by us, in reality the infinite possibilities are playing out simultaneously. Perhaps the mandingo effect is just human brains misfiring and remembering information from alternate timelines (or more likely just us gaslighting ourselves)

In the case of WoW there explicitly is a main timeline though the bronze dragonflight exists specifically to protect the main timeline, there can splinters off of that timeline like in the case of draenor, the alternates you visit in dragonflight, some of the shit the legion was using, etc, but changes made to the past will alter the present that you actually exist in, presumably from everything we've been shown if you were to kill your grandparents in the past you would cease to exist on the spot in WoW's version of time travel

homie that plot was resolved in Cataclysm, in End Time. Nozdormu was given a vision of his own death and he saw a godawful future which was so bad he turned himself into Murozond and fought against having "one, true timeline" to avert that future, even if it means destroying everything in a different way.

Imo alternate timelines are insanely hard to pull off as a concept and it's better off that you don't do that in your story. In this quest the timeline is about to be fricked because the Demon Soul that kept Alexstrasza imprisoned is gone missing, and she may escape historically too early. So you go back in time to replace the Demon Soul so that Alexstrasza stay as a captive and breeds more dragons for Dragonmaw Clan as was intended.

In the case of WoW there explicitly is a main timeline though the bronze dragonflight exists specifically to protect the main timeline, there can splinters off of that timeline like in the case of draenor, the alternates you visit in dragonflight, some of the shit the legion was using, etc, but changes made to the past will alter the present that you actually exist in, presumably from everything we've been shown if you were to kill your grandparents in the past you would cease to exist on the spot in WoW's version of time travel

This is why time travel stories are hard, not thinking through the actual effects of time travel or even considering in-universe ways things don't make sense will make or break your story. The good ones are usually written in one of two ways
>1. Causality loops or "time loops" where something already happened and will always happen, and you're going back to fulfill the cause in the past, whether you know you're doing that or not
>2. Time travel can and does change the past but obviously its consequences are swift and immediately felt, and may or may not fundamentally break the universe in some way
Time travel stories are pretty simple on paper if you can actually keep track of cause-and-effect but the execution is really hard, especially since Back to the Future seems to be the default for bad writers to lean on in how its time-travel system works and BttF did not think through its time travel system, nor was anybody really supposed to take it seriously.
Imo alternate timelines are insanely hard to pull off as a concept and it's better off that you don't do that in your story. Alarmingly I'd point to Homestuck as an example of alternate timelines done very well, but obviously it then shits up its back with the idea later in the story like it does almost every single other one of its ideas.
