Wtf happened to Kojima games?

Just replayed MGS1-5+Peace walker and Death Stranding and wow.
The decline of his games is astronomical.
You feel it after playing 4 and peace walker after having gone through MGS 1-3, but 5 and Death Stranding are his hackiest projects.
Really seems like he lost his creative talent for writing videogames, just wtf happened?

The issue seems to be scope. MGS1-3 are all pretty small, tightly focused, linear games. They are densely packed with good shit from start to finish, with very little baggage beyond excessive dialogue and cutscenes, which are still usually enjoyable for what they are.

From MGS4 onward, he started to spread himself thinner and thinner. Each new release was substantially bigger than what came before it, and as a result everything feels less refined, way more bloated. MGSV is the absolute worst offender, I genuinely believe you could cut 75% of that game, and lose absolutely nothing.

      >The issue seems to be scope
It isn’t scope. If you see DYKG video on him, he always mentions it was a scope problem and never got to do x or y and such but when you see how many times this happens and the excuses he gives, it’s very clear he’s just phoning it in and has no fricking clue what to do. There’s clearly someone or a group of people holding this frick together but in reality, he’s just a hack

With the leak that he’s finally making a movie, I hope he fricks off from games

IIRC he always had a co-writer for MG1-2 and MGS1-3, it is only 4 that he became the sole writer. So his co-writer either was a better writer or reigned him in.

He was always a better "director" anyway, it's why the mechanics and cutscenes are always great no matter the writing quality.

mgs4 / peace walker felt worse than 1-3 because you weren't infiltrating just the same during one long mission and instead were traveling too much around.
mgs5 tho has by far the best gameplay mechanics. the problem here was that it never got finished.
what I honestly don't get is the extreme praise that 3 gets.

3 was mind blowing for the time, especially coming from mg1-2 and mgs1-2. 3 is definitely a product of its time, and doesn’t seem like a huge deal now, but when it came out there was nothing like that game.

1+2 blew my mind, I don't remember 3 doing anything new or impressive, especially in 2004. The only thing that I always remember are the American patriot imagery, and I always assumed that game is just so popular because it appeals to them.

3 was the most polished of the 3 and had the best boss battles. 2 really lacked that and 1 was still had too many limitations because of the ps1

      Anonymous

MGS4 was shit because it has no redeeming qualities at all. It has nothing to do with being a single infiltration mission.

MGS3 had a lot of changes to the gameplay, a somewhat open map and a lot more weapons alongside limb damage and food. Camouflage and frogs made everything better

        Anonymous

I barely remember 4, just that the animations and cutscenes were good.
In 3, I ignored camouflage on my playthrough for the most part because it felt tacked on. The limb damage system too. Didn't do anything for the gameplay and could be taken out without making the game worse. "somewhat open" also applies to 1+2. I really don't get it, 3 just felt like a worse 1+2 but with tacked on menu surfing shit.

3 was the most polished of the 3 and had the best boss battles. 2 really lacked that and 1 was still had too many limitations because of the ps1

        >3 was the most polished of the 3 and had the best boss battles
I really only remember how much I hated to boss battles in 3. Beeguy, Cosmonaut and Oldgay all felt like shit. Ghostguy was kino, but gameplay wise also completely irrelevant.

Don't confuse being able to backtrack in 2 with the maps in 3. I didn't backtrack in 1 so i don't even know what to tell you.

I don't understand why Death Stranding or the Death Stranding 2 trailer get so much hate. Everything negative I've read online seems to boil down to "it's weird" or "it's different". It's like people want the same Hollywood action movie tropes over and over in their video games. Isn't the point of media to explore novel ideas and themes to push the genre into new territories? I don't think Death Stranding is the best game ever, nor do I think it's the most experimental game ever, not even close. But at least it tries to deliver something different from the usual AAA game. At least I'm not playing as yet another prophesized hero on and epic quest to save the world from an evil villain for the hundredth time.

Its not contrarian. The game sold well, but casual conversation about the game usually goes to mocking kojima. Nobody likes to have in-depth discussions of it here compared to MGS. Its a post apocalyptic mailman sim and its good at that

He was basically done with MGS after 3, but Konami wanted him to do 4 and so the whole game was basically a huge shitpost. Peacewalker I think was his last original game in the franchise, as he made it for his kid. V is just Peacewalker 2, and was heavily crippled by Konami, possibly because Kojimbo was done with the franchise and couldn't get everything out on time because of it.

I have played every one of these games on release, i got MGS when I was 8.
MGS1-3 are absolute masterpieces, never to be topped or replaced
MGS4 was supposed to be the conclusion to the series, and while it fell a little flat because it changed to missions over one long linear game, it was still fun/a great ending
Peace Walker and MGSV should have never happened, the series was done and they added nothing, if anything they hurt the continuity. I still enjoyed them as MGS games, but 5 left a very bad taste in everyone's mouths for obvious reasons - it just wasn't fricking finished.
Death Stranding is a fricking masterpiece, and I cannot wait to play the second one, holy shit a fun, unique game. Absolutely not for everyone but good god, if you get into it you never forget it

MGS1 was also pretty shit mechanically, MGS only became a good stealth game starting with 2. I know it's not a popular opinion but MGS1 is loved for the gimmicks, not for the core stealth gameplay.

I dont think it's fair to call them gimmicks. yes mgs2 had better stealth mechanics and gameplay in general but that's only natural given that it came out afterwards.

You're just moronic. MGS gameplay got better all the way from 1 to 2 to 3 to 4 to 5.
4 had very few playable levels but the actual gameplay was great, when you could play it. So not a bad game at all, just a very short one, with a very long movie attached to it.
5 had the opposite problem - it's too long and the pacing of the story suffers because of it. However the gameplay in 5 is the best by far, and there's a ton of locations and scenarios for you to play around in.
5 and 4 just aren't neat AAA packages with neat pacing, so the low IQ kneejerk reaction is to dismiss them just because their campaigns are kinda weird. But you try paying attention to them and actually learn their mechanics and you'll understand they play better than MGS1-3.
