The people in charge of making games are still the same. What's happened is that the video game market exploded in popularity and has been growing and growing for each passing year. The people on the right are only hired because consumers like the shit they put out, not because of ideology. Political correctness and progressivism are still in vogue, they make money.
I can tell you from personal experience within the industry that the vast majority of bad decisions all come from the top. Shitty writers are hired because they're cheap and because our bosses reckon that it's more cost-effective to have a middling story that somewhat panders than to splurge on actual writers. The programmers and UX designers who could be construed as diversity hires still put in the work, are open to change and genuinely care about the games they're making. Outsourced assets and external libraries made by contractors in India and Korea are genuinely terrible though.
This is what inevitably happens once an industry grows too big for its own good.
