Not just kinda. What's sad is the setting, music and overall tone is great. The gameplay is even decent. But the MMO systems kill it. It might have worked as a dedicated single player game (with 80% of the filler quest and dialogue removed).
Or, if they had made it a true free MMO where you could just go grind on enemies in the world. Without having 90% of the game focused on story quests. That might have worked too. But like you said, trying to do a single player story in an MMO is dumb. Just like it was dumb in TORtanic. Which, despite what the defenders claim, is the closest in design to FFXIV.
I havent played TOR, but I played many other MMOs.
So I'm not really a stranger to padding, but the padding in this game is weird. Like I'm used to grinds or long travel quests to waste peoples time. That has the positive side effect that it often gets people to play together.
Here its the story thats padded. You waste so much time talking to npcs and it moves forward at a snails pace. Every time you talk to an npc the camera slowly shifts into this semi-cinematic mode where everybody just has to emote all the time while the text is moving mega slowly. Barely any combat or interaction with the game world when the game is both set up for fighting and has a pretty big world. Really weird. Single player games arent like that either. You could squeeze several FF games into one 14 expansion, and those games will have more happening overall.
I agree. The dialogue is the biggest problem. Characters say 50 lines of dialogue to just give you a simple "go fetch me 5 apples" quest. And then god help you if it's a story quest. You'll be sitting there for 2 hours.
But this is the major problem with Final Fantasy as a series. Lots of dialogue to make it seem deep. But the actual content of the dialogue is as shallow as a shounen anime.
Yeah there’s way too much downtime in between questing. The game feels like VN sometimes, when you just want to level up and get gear. If every quest and cutscene had voice acting like ESO and TOR it would at least be more tolerable.

Not at all. The dialog is part of what sets xiv apart from other mmos. Where other mmos will give you a quick twitter size summary of what you're supposed to do, and the full quest text if you want to read it, xiv will read like you're playing a single player rpg. That's what a lot of people like about the game.

But being realistic, if they do that it's going to severely limit the characters they can reuse and likely even the content they can make. So it's fine some stuff isn't voiced because it means they can do more with characters.
