I try to be level 30 right after I use the lamp, and I do enough tests to push my rank to match. I save the rest of my leveling for after I get the Ragnarok, and I can get a level per battle on The Island Closest to Hell.
>The graphics are better at least
what no they are not and it completely ruins the background designs, especially world and combat maps look like ars, also Squall looks horrondous in the botched remaster.
moron. The background designs et al were not changed at all.The world map and battle maps just have a lack of shitty PSX vertex jiggling. The new character models look objectively better.
I think he means the contrast between the backgrounds and models is jarring, which it always has been since the original 640x480 PC release.

The remastered character models are more Dissidia-esque anime style compared to the original. Guess he meant that. They do stand out when compared to the npc's. I personally didn't really care. The one annoying thing I do remember from the Remaster was that one of the card players you had to play against to finish the Queen of Cards sidequest was just a mushy backround character in Deling City.

Playing above 640x480 or even lower, since the PSX didn't render at that res makes it pretty apparent how many background characters were actually baked into the environment. The had to have been plenty of performance overhead still there even on the PSX to have them all at least be models.
>how it makes you not use magic
To be fair, most offensive magic wasn't very good at being junction fodder.
So matching elemental weaknesses didn't come with much of an opportunity cost when you're junctioning shit like demi, dispel, berserk to stats and only stapling elements on when countering damage-types.
>To be fair, most offensive magic wasn't very good at being junction fodder.
???
The best magic for Str and most stats are Ultima, Meteor, Holy, Flare, and Tornado. All offensive. Triple for speed, regen etc for health or defense
The best for STR was ultima >Ultima Meteor Holy, Flare, Tornado
Ultima was the best magic for like everything. However >Meteor, Holy, Flare,
Absolutely not
Meltdown, triple, Full-Life, Aura
The vast majority of which aren't spammable (or early) spells.
Shit like ara/aga, Bio, Aero, etc weren't going anywhere near your core stats.
Full-life, Ultimate, Triple, Tornado, Metldown, reflect. You could replace Full-life with meteor and use Demi instead of Quake. Aura's could be replaced with death.
Meanwhile the rest of the spell library including meteor was yours to spam.
Technically don't need to junction Ultima to strength either. Meltdown lets you reach cap, and Berserk was also decent enough in a "you can still beat Omega with this junctioned to this slot in all of your characters"
Not like any of that mattered given at the point you're min maxing functioning Ultima you were rolling the dice on Ultimecia breaking your stocks.
Strength is the most useful stat so it holds more weight.
Meltdown, triple, aura, etc are great for certain stats but meteor, flare, and holy are the best for strength after ultima.
the real iasue here is your original sentiment is wrong. various types of magic are useful for their related stat

>Strength is the most useful stat
True but not necessarily. RST, ESP and VIT will allow you to stay on yellow and do special attacks without risking a KO. Wow, a couplet
The game actively discourages you from using magic because the best magic is also the best equipment (""junction"") and if you use it your stats go down
The story goes to complete, irredeemable shit the moment you go to space
The best way to play the game is getting Enc-None as soon as you can and leaving it on for the rest of the game because leveling makes enemies stronger instead of you
Laguna and his friends were far more interesting than anything Squall or the others had going on and got completely shafted and went nowhere in the last half
People who think the junction system was complicated are moronic, it was just >oh you've switched parties now you have to swap junctions again oopsies we removed everything set it all back up teehee
The only actual good part of the game was the soundtrack
>Laguna and his friends were far more interesting than anything Squall or the others had going on and got completely shafted and went nowhere in the last half
Laguna is an unfunny pratfalling clown and his friends are cardboard cutouts. Showing them in only short glimpses was a very good thing.
>The best way to play the game is getting Enc-None as soon as you can and leaving it on for the rest of the game because leveling makes enemies stronger instead of you
Like many games, morons who don't want to learn what they are doing pigeonhole themselves into using an unfun, tedious tactic and blame the game despite refusing to properly engage with it.
The battles are too often, aren't challenging at all, and just detract from the story arc. Skipping them was the smartest thing Square implemented in the game.
>aren't challenging at all
applies to the whole game >detract from the story arc
so watch a playthrough if you're only interested in the story.

I'm seeing conflicting things here, should you level up? Shouldn't you? Should I draw 99 of every spell early on? I already lost the Ifrit card should I just start again?
Don't draw from enemies except GF's from bosses and occasional draws. Don't level until you get the Ragnarok. It's quicker and you can multitask with getting spells. Frick that card. It's not important. Make sure you're getting refine abilities from GFs (set them to learn).

all modern re-releases of FF7 allow you to turn off encounters, max your characters, and make you invincible. In fact, most FF games that are playable on modern consoles/PC come with these built in. >Had I known about one, I probably would have.
Right, because you don't like them as games. Which is why I pointed out that an even easier solution would be to just watch them online.

No, you're arguing semantics when it's clear. FF8 has a built in mechanic through junctioning to halve or zero the encounter rate. That's not comparable with shit added in ports that edit memory. You're a disingenuous shithead, but that's to be expected on Ganker.

Yes, let me get on YouTube in 1999 and watch the storyline.
It's the point in series where all party member designs devolved into metrosexual twinks.
GF and junction system is way too broken in your favor. This combined with enemy scaling means you're punished for gaining any levels while being overly rewarded for drawing a single enemy untill you're fully stacked with their spells.
It's only redeemed by some aspects of its batshit insane story despite devs for some reason actively trying to deny a solid theory about its final boss.
Squall is among the worst FF protagonists. Over the course of the story he changes from a brooding antisocial prick to an overly vulnerable crybaby.
Laguna Segments segments had some potential but they end abruptly halfway through the game and ultimately amount to nothing.
Shit's overrated and only rides on the coattails of VII exploding the popularity of both the series and its genre.
>GF and junction system is way too broken in your favor. This combined with enemy scaling means you're punished for gaining any levels while being overly rewarded for drawing a single enemy untill you're fully stacked with their spells.
I didn't think there were people too dumb to play a Final Fantasy game, but here you go.
>Over the course of the story he changes from a brooding antisocial prick to an overly vulnerable crybaby.
He was a vulnerable crybaby from the start and was putting a front. Through the story he gained something to care about and stated having more conviction, but remained a crybaby nonetheless.
He's also a kid, which makes being a crybaby tolerable.
>the game is too easy because it's easy to exploit >n-no! you're just too dumb!
?
Your "easy" method of exploiting it is going around your elbow to get to your thumb. There's much easier ways to amass spells than drawing from enemies like your name is Chris Burke.
>optimal play is just drawing spells and running away from battles, it goes against any gaming sense and logic - it's anti-fun
So spending a good 10 hours drawing spells when you can just refine them in seconds is optimal?
I don't understand why you people always deflect to refine.
Refine is good as long as you know which GF abilities to get and where to farm the items you need which leans toward the "just play with a guide, lol" mentality.
Drawing to 100 takes several minutes at best.
>Refine is good as long as you know which GF abilities to get and where to farm the items you need
Well, because the game came out in 1999, and if you haven't mastered it in 25 years, maybe you don't deserve electricity. We talked about in on israelitesnet and IRC when it came out, sharing info. That's how I found out about "the" islands. >Drawing to 100 takes several minutes at best.
Also, the best spells aren't on enemies.
i don't give a shit. I played the game once when it came out and then sold it off lmao.
Drawing magic at most points in the game is nearly always outpaced by refining >with a guide
Or you open up the menu and read
What the do you think T - Mag RF means? You don't have to guess, the game literally tells you "Refines Lightning/Wind Magic from items"
This is on par with the people who somehow missed Quezcotl and Shiva. Even ignoring fluff text and mandatory dialogue telling you where it is, it was in the manual too.
No game in the world could accommodate that amount of blatant disregard.
What's your angle here?
I could understand if someone was complaining about the game being too difficult but it's the opposite.
You're literally confirming the point you're trying to dispute to and patting yourself on the back like you've won the argument.

Firstly, I'm directly contradicting the point that you need a guide. You don't. Even insinuating it is, at best, misinformed, and at worst, intentionally duplicitous.
Second >difficult
The only hard game in this franchise at the time of 8s release was the original 4 on active. This isn't a franchise that's particularly difficult and 8 is equivalent to most titles prior to its release in difficulty. Again to the exception of 4 on active.
>This combined with enemy scaling means you're punished for gaining any levels while being overly rewarded for drawing a single enemy untill you're fully stacked with their spells.
the fanboys constantly try to downplay this, but it really is one of the worst systems out there
optimal play is just drawing spells and running away from battles, it goes against any gaming sense and logic - it's anti-fun
>optimal play is just drawing spells and running away from battles, it goes against any gaming sense and logic - it's anti-fun

ah yes, walking around waiting my SeeD pay so I can buy items to refine them with my GF abilities which I can only get by levelling up which coincidentally is the worst thing you can do in this game
i don't give a shit. I played the game once when it came out and then sold it off lmao.

its honestly not that bad. The forced love story kinda makes sense if you keep rinoa with squall all the time. Ultimecia castle is still the most stylish final dungeon ever in a ff game
Refine is only really a quick process if you have a guide or prior knowledge to know what and where. Drawing is still a broken unfun process even if refining is infinitely more broken with any prior knowledge.
>prior knowledge to know what and where.
Every single enemy drops various flavors of m-stones and bosses are guaranteed to drop their items.
Refining never requires prior knowledge unless you're min maxing strength at all phases of the game.
Who decides optimal play?
Careful: if you say "developer" then you seem very flawed in your motivation to purchase, play and grind something you clearly dislike.
If you say "player" then... don't play that way.
>first game to drop the default blue text boxes in favor of generic gray >first game to change cartoonish design to generic semi realistic style that aged like milk >setting is just contemporary modern-ish world with even less fantasy elements than vii
You have a funny definition of style, friend.
It's all nostalgia. Accept it and you may even develop proper taste.
its blend of realism and fantasy is fantastic. it is far more fantastic than you suggest though. no, I don't think it's just nostalgia, it genuinely has great aesthetics.
I like that the game didn't try to be FF7.5 and actually made an attempt to be significantly distinct from it's predecessor. It would have been easy to just take it easy but a lot of the technical changes they made in 2 years from 7 is pretty impressive.
8's systems and story are pretty ass, overall, granted, especially if you're coming from 7.
>This combined with enemy scaling means you're punished for gaining any levels while being overly rewarded for drawing a single enemy untill you're fully stacked with their spells.
This kind of complaint never floated around until speedrunners made it common knowledge.
And the reason why it wasn't a critique levied at the game before that, is because levelling up actually does make you stronger than the enemies scale. So no it doesn't punish you, and speedrunners speeding through the game without levelling up doesn't change that.
If levelling up legitimately punished you, then casuals and non-autists would have never been able to beat the game. But they did.
The whole "levelling up punishes you boohoo ;_;" just because levelling up isn't optimal, is some real twisted logic.
You do in fact grow stronger when levelling up. Even relative to the scaling.
The pc version on steam is flipping R1 and L1 and all button prompts are the keyboard. I couldnt deal with it; just too annoying.
>levelling up legitimately punished you, then casuals and non-autists would have never been able to beat the game. But they did.
The game is piss easy either way. Its just not that fun
>metrosexual twinks
It's teens in the late 90s. >enemy scaling
1. Bosses were not scaled.
2. It gave you the option to grind, but it didn't endorse it.
3. Junctioning was neither required nor difficult (there was an "Auto Junction" option).
4. ENC-HALF and ENC-NONE existed. >It's only redeemed by R=U
People who played this game came to that conclusion, yes. >Squall is among the worst FF protagonists. Over the course of the story he changes from a brooding antisocial prick to an overly vulnerable crybaby.
He is a great character. You just don't like him because he hurts your ego. >Laguna Segments segments had some potential but they end abruptly halfway through the game and ultimately amount to nothing.
They're exposition; they always "amounted" to something. Fun fact: Laguna is Squall's father. Did you know that? It's never outright explicitly stated in the game, but it's pretty obvious! >Shit's overrated and only rides on the coattails of VII exploding the popularity of both the series and its genre.
Of course branding had significant factor for its popularity.
It's irritating how loud Internet culture's "tell me what I should do" screams, these days.
I remember the average person liking FF8 until Spooney did some video essay about it and half of it was one long complaint about the draw system. I know, I know, grind mechanics? In a JRPG from 1999?? Thats crazy!
And then every millennial teenager with a computer saw his takes and parroted it and its been like that ever since.
Even the draw system was over-exaggerated. People still have those takes to this day.
I still read people talking about drawing 99 of a magic when that was never necessary due to the various refines.
At worst, stocking up on 99 sleep early for when you "need" them substantially later from that point or tediously revisiting a hidden draw point. Neither of which were necessary or even optimal.
>I know, I know, grind mechanics? In a JRPG from 1999?? Thats crazy!
The best part is that that FF8 is actually less grindy than both FF7 and FF9, well, with FF9 it's more debatable, but less grindy than FF7 for sure.
Getting 100 of every spell in the game is equivalent of maxing out every single materia in the game. If you are asking yourself what moron would spend time grinding APs for every materia in the game then ask yourself what moron would draw every single spell in FF8 to 100.
Getting 100 of every magic (besides Ultimas) is more like grinding out a single materia in 7, and there's literally only like 12 spells you'll use for junctioning anyway
Not to mention it's pretty fricking obvious that you're supposed to just refine items and other magic after a certain point
It's been forever since I actually played FF8. But I don't even remember it being that grindy.
Couldn't you use the Junction System to strengthen your Draw power or something, and then use your Draws to strengthen your Junction. Until the Draw system was a non-issue?
Or am I just completely misremembering?
In my mind the Draw system was pretty set it and forget it after the midgame or sooner.
Even zoomers who have no idea who he even is are still parroting his talking points without even realizing it. But something people don't remember, because at that point Spoony was already going insane and everyone ignored him, is that he apologized to FF8 fans after playing FF13. Which was quite funny but at that point the legion of FF8 haters he created was completely out of his hands. He created a monster that has taken on a life of its own.
To be fair, he apologized just in comparison to subsequent Final Fantasy games, and by the time he played them he was already insane. And Final Fantasy X is actually better than Final Fantasy VIII (as most games are) and he completely shitted on that. His apology shouldn't be taken too seriously.
FF8 is probably the first game in series where it's most vocal detractors never played it. Stemming all the way back to Spoony's shit review that caused my first exposure to youtuber cultists in a FF music forum.
These days it's usually the same points from back then. But at least people don't try to pretend triple triad is necessary to beat the game anymore.
Fantastic, of course.
Off the top of my head, fun facts >Odin had one strike, "Zantetsuken," and it did not work on bosses. >Gilgamesh had 4 strikes, and all of them DID work on bosses.
The Junction System is busted. You can get like 5000hp after getting Siren at the beginning of the game. A shame because the world, atmosphere, story and music are kino

I like 16 but it was very obviously rushed out the door and likely went through development hell. The obvious semi-prime Bahamut that you fight with no fanfare and the rather extreme amounts of backtracking certainly don't help.
It's not often I play a game and can feel the rewrites.
>play the remake >only use Squall, Quistis and Zell unless otherwise forced >turn on fast forward and draw 99 of each spell from enemies >just move entire junction sets whenever forced to change party >just cast Aura on Squall and Zell and do like 500000 damage by spamming the quickest combos in Zells Limit break
Skill issue
>just move entire junction sets whenever forced to change party
Yea this is how the game is played... why would you ever need more than 3 junction sets?
What are the right restrictions to place on yourself to balance the gameplay? >can only draw from each enemy once >can only challenge each character to Triple Triad 3x (until card queen at the end?) >can only refine a given card type (e.g. Geezard, Tyrannosaur) once
Do you think this would work?
It's a JRPG, they're not meant to be challenging or require much thought or strategy. If there's one thing I recommend it's to not intentionally break the game by exploiting card modding.
I occasionally do no-draw run (basically I don't give any characters ability to draw, except for when I know I can draw a summon in a fight) to remind myself that this game being too difficult or requires grinding magic is just internet gaslighting by children who weren't even born during game's release.
If we're being serious? The usual; >no % multiplier junctions beyond 20% >no stacking multiple modifiers that impact the same stat >no running from fights >no enc-half/none >no aura >no spamming swaps to trigger a limit break from party member cycling
The former keeps your stats in line with enemies, the later stops the one cheese that would be available, and forces "regular" progression onto you. The downside is that the last disc becomes quite difficult.
Ff8s junction system and such is flawed fpr sure but I would rather play something flawed but different and interesting than the same shit over and over
>drawing to 100 and refining makes the game too easy >don't level up because the game gets hard
This is why I can't take you homosexuals seriously despite 8 having legit criticisms.
>game too easy >Yes >Do you understand the problem now?
I don't because every FF is braindead difficulty wise and it was never about any of the titles being hard.
You are right that it feels pointless because it doesn't really change much. Enemies hitting slightly harder doesn't mean squat when you have -aga spells junctioned by disc 1 and the better drops and draws from higher leveled monsters doesn't do shit.
But when anons are complaining that leveling is discouraged because enemies get stronger is just moronic. I can't imagine playing through this game with enc-none just to avoid exp when the game is already easy as frick. It's a final fantasy. They are all braindead easy.
Final Fantasy 13 is the true worst game in the series and I know there's some anon trying to pull an FF8 and say it's overly-hated just because he likes Lightning a little too much.
the worst FF game is still better than 95% of games especially with how bad the industry is. thevleast popular wine is still a better drink than dog water
Give the characters mana which is a cap for how much magic they can junction
E.G. fire costs 1, firga 2, firaga 4, ultima 5
So by the end game with 999 mana, you can only equip like 50 of each third stage spell to at most 5 stats (or obviously less spells to more stats etc)
FF8 is the only entry I regularly replay, it's comfy and playing cards is fun. The setting also feel very home-y, with that village outside school and the contemporary looking cities. It's an oddly comforting game that brings me peace.
It genuinely has my favorite tracks in towns/cities, every single one of them is memorable in their own way. Besides all the calming ones I think Deling city's is a bit overlooked, it really captures that nonchalant feel of a big city
Random-Same-Plus-Open (and no Direct, Elemental or Same-Wall) is secretly the most exciting ruleset. However, if you lose any of the rules, except Random, it turns godawful.
I liked Ivalice enough for what it is. But it really should have just stayed in the FFT as opposed to that foolhardy initiative to balloon it into it's own universe.
I liked Ivalice enough for what it is. But it really should have just stayed in the FFT as opposed to that foolhardy initiative to balloon it into it's own universe.
They never really stopped trying to do that.
Why the FRICK does SQenix keep trying to puch Ivalice? To me it's a fairly run of the mill fantasy setting.
I always wanted to make a "card save" where I play the game until disc 3, and just use that save file dedicated to just playing cards all over the world map.
>writing was dull
I never understood that complaint, I get that romance part isn't very strong, however, to this day FF8 has some of the most unique writing in the series and honestly in all of gaming, it weirdly reminds me of Utena in how it twists around the fairy tale archetypes, because normally Seifer and "Edea" would fill the role of protagonists who stand up to the cruel world, whereas Squall enacts the fate already decided upon Ultimecia (Ultimecia will die in her future, but in history's future she has already definitively died in the past, otherwise there wouldn't be prophecy of time warriors from the past slaying the sorceress).
As much as I like FF9 (and I know I know, there's a bit of a beef between FF8 fans and FF9 fans, and I am going to set the record straight, I prefer FF9, cool? Cool), in terms of themes I would characterize it as dull more than FF8, because FF9 its themes are pretty simple and straightforward existentialist vs determinist and plenty of stories advocate for that, you know, nothing is decided, you build your own fate and you get the drill. FF8 is the only story in gaming that I can think of that advocates for direct opposite, some things are determined and some things can't be escaped (like death, primarily Ultimecia's death that happened before she was even born), and Ultimecia is entirely unique as a villain because she's essentially doing same thing Zidane succeeded at.
Story is moronic plus the enemy levels scale with your level so you're fricking yourself over if you level up too much. The game is at its best when you abuse the systems to break it. And the music is good and most towns are very comfy.
Overall it sucks ass.
I'm pretty sure FF8 would be in the top 5 FF games if you asked most people. 7 and 10 are obviously going to be the top 2. 6 and 8 then. Not sure what the 5th would be but probably 9 or 12. MMOS dont count of course so forget about 11 and 14 as the mmo genre is all awful and should never have been given mainline numbered status.
the fricking junction system is elite level shit. >Punishes you for killing enemies >Rewards you for spamming DRAW FOR 30 MINUTES.
It looks and sounds amazing thou
You are not fucming punished for leveling up. I can't believe there are so many morons afraid of leveling. You outpace every enemy in the game just leveling up normally. Which then gives you access to stronger spells. Which you then don't need to draw 99 of for every character every time you encounter one, you're just autistic. The only reason at all to avoid fights is if you want to keep your level low until you get skills that up your stats on level up. Which you don't need to clear the hardest boss in the game.
I'll tell you why. Mechanically, you junction magic and never cast it unless you can draw and cast triple. You have to play cards to get group invulnerability for the ability to defeat Omega weapon. The card queen and regional spread of card rules that turn an otherwise great card game into a tedious slog. Too many hexadragons in the island closest to hell. There's more, but I have played every final fantasy since 1989, and I think 8 is weak. Oh, also the "when did the loop begin" story.
>friend and i want to use pc for msn with cute girls >his brother set the xp logon password >friend gives up >wait theres a hint, lets see what it is >"rinoa's friend"
Only time being a game nerd helped me irl
I'm a hardcore fan with FF8, so many times I would even try to escape reality with lucid dreaming, I would be in Balamb Garden where I would often train with Zell in the training center and help Selphie with the Garden Festival, but one day as I was talking to Selphie, we went to my dormitory for a private talk. She immediately said, "You know you could live with us forever.." I gave her a confused look and she continued, "We understand that you live on earth and you REALLY wish to live here". I then said "How..How did you know?" She then giggled and said "Because we've been watching you, silly!"
This was a dream come true and I almost cried right there. She then said, "I talked with Headmaster Cid and he agreed that you would be PERFECT for SeeD, you just have to do...one thing". She then held my hand and looked deep into my eyes and said "...You have to have a nice day for the transfer to work correctly." I then gave her some questions, "How long do I have before the deal expires?" She then said "Cid said 3 months.." I added by saying "What's the most painless way?..." She giggled again, "Suicide will require pain buuut...if you want it quick...Get a gun and a nice shot to the head works.
I then agreed and she gave me a kiss on the forehead, "I know this will be tough but once it's over and done, you'll get to live here!" I then woke up and this was last week and i purchased a gun. I might actually kill myself because that dream just felt too real to be fake and my life isn't doing so grand.
How does this not have any (you)s? Sounds like a bunch of demons are exploiting your weeb fantasies to use your soul for hellfodder. I've heard scary shit about lucid dreaming and the entities you can encounter doing it.
Why do people say Quistis is hot?
Shes the most bland looking librarian dork looking uggo ever conceived. Literally zero sex appeal.
And yeah Im a masochist who wants a dominant woman to whip me, but Quistis just sucks
No you are just moronic. Where do you think most of the resources are spent?
Do you think the npc set of pixels that isnt even a 3d model in the background is hot too?
Missed the point pretty hard, eh? Quistis does the same thing Squall does - puts on a tough front because she showed early talent and was forced to be an instructor. In reality, she just wants to share her feelings and help others. The whip, the glasses - its all a show to make her seem older / more sophisticated (even though she is only one year older than most of the cast).
A lot of people don't see that, but you actually can apply that logic to every character and I sometimes genuinely can't tell if it was intentional or not, but it kind of works when you view them through Squall's character arc and take into account their individual experiences.
>Although Zell is obviously a Marty McFly reference, because he was picked on by Seifer he developed a combatative personality >Quistis is as what you've said >Seifer literally LARPs as Laguna >Both Irvine and Selphie share similarity where they were separated from the group, but not adopted either, Irvine openly admits to not liking lone sniper persona and hating loneliness and Selphie could be interpreted as overcompensating with cheerfulness to escape feeling loneliness
X would have benefitted from some of the polish and budget they gave kingdom farts instead. You can see them still do the PSX-era games' animation system all the time, even in cutscenes when they're not doing closeups with the higher quality models, and it just looks sloppy. Meanwhile they made sure everything looked buttery smooth for the autistic disney fanfiction series they developed at the same time. It just feels awkward in ways beyond the english dub having weird timings to try and line up with the japanese facial animation and the implication you're supposed to take the horrid models they gave even major characters that aren't the main cast and Seymour seriously when they're flat, unmoving textures yapping.
>and yet still better than FF15
FF15 at least isn't hopelessly outdated and isn't turn-based, it at least has technological advancements over it, whereas FF8 both bad game design and outdated gamedesign.
>outdated
oh no this 1999 game plays like a game from 1999 how terrible
Fricking moron.
Zoomers would be afraid to copy his opinions, unless he censored and rereleased his reviews to remove the part where he calls squall's hair "homosexual".
You know what, you're right.
I will send this list to some famous youtuber and pay him 100 dollars / euros / GBP or whatever he's using to shill my list and presents it as the ultimate FF tier list. THEN you will change your tune and pretend you agree with it.
The game is fairly easily broken if you're familiar with its systems, but for first time or casual players:
>Junction system is implemented poorly and forces you to spend time drawing magic and hoarding it instead of actually using it when you need it because...
>The level scaling system will bite you in the ass if you don't keep up with constantly drawing and junctioning better magic to your attributes because levelling up is not enough to keep up with enemies so if you're far enough in the game and save before a boss and you can't get out to grind better magic, you're fricked
>Summoning GFs is by far the strongest method of dealing damage in the early game, (without grinding cards/enemies and refining them into magic) so most new players will gravitate towards it, but it requires you to sit through the same 30 second animation every single fricking time.
>Story is convoluted and dumb, particularly from the point the garden starts but the main 'twist' is just completely moronic. Also, characters other than Squall and Rinoa get almost zero on-screen character development.
>A lot of the sidequests are impossible to find without a guide. This has kind of always been an issue with ff but in 8 it was particularly egregious
>It was the game that marked the beginning of Nomura's weird belt fetish
There's probably more, but that's all i remember off my head.
Junction has flaws but is not implemented poorly. Not everything is hyperbolic between masterpieces and dogshit.
If you level and enemies takr you over just use junction and triple triad. Yoi have to totally not understand the game for it to beat you.
Animations are long by todays standards but they were beloved back then. This isnt really an argument, especially when fans of FF9 wanna talk about slow combat speed.
>stpry is convoluted and dumb
Low iq normies always parrot this shit towards anything Japanes or that doesnt follow the heros journey meme.
All of the sodequests are easy to find of you arent a drooling moron and actually explore or talk to people.
Nomura is a great character and game designer. Belts and zippers is not an argument. Anyone who designs fashion or charavters or really anything will have phases where theyre into a certain thing.
This entire post is the most generic, bottom of the barrel low iq nonargument Ganker shitpost. Ita a perfect microcosm of the stupidity that pervades this board. Not one single point here is a valid argument
There's a reason they never went back to anything remotely similar in terms of mechanics: junction, level scaling, GFs, drawing magic, nothing. It's because it was no good, and they knew it.
I never mentioned animations, only that having to watch a 30+ second animation every single time you used a GF is complete and utter ass game design, and god help you if you actually used boost.
Story is subjective, but if you think selective amnesia is a good enough plot device on which to hang the entirety of your game's narrative, brother, you just have shit taste.
Sidequests are not 'easy to find' if you don't have a guide. You didn't actually play the game legitimately when it came out, did you?
Nomura has always been a hack. His obsession with overdesigning characters was like watching someone's descent into madness in real time.
>why do so many people consider this to be one of the worst games in the series?
Level scaling
Having to draw or play a shit card game to get stronger without touching the level scaling
Ultimecia is a lameass villian that people have to latch onto debunked fanfiction to make her seem interesting
The love interest and story feel rushed and poorly developed
Everyone but Squall feels unecessary in terms of the plot
The big plot twist is introduced and then immediately forgotten
>and yet still better than FF15
FF15 at least isn't hopelessly outdated and isn't turn-based, it at least has technological advancements over it, whereas FF8 both bad game design and outdated gamedesign.
Yes, at least you DO something, you have an output when you press buttons, you must position yourself, do timing. Turn based just removes the gameplay from the game.
I know that this is controversial opinion because playing like this means skipping a big portion of the game, but... I'm glad that Pixel Remasters of 1-6 have the option to disable encounters. Not to skip the hard part, but to make certain challenge runs more bearable since you don't have to run from fights every 5 seconds.
In FF8, of course, you have No-Enc ability by Diablos (or is it Diablolos?) GF, which makes this possible even on older versions of the game, before they added no encounter option (in remaster). Yes, the game is easier if you don't level up and just turn cards into items, but you can make it harder. Doing >pic related
run + not using Quezacotl and Card command in any shape and form was actually fun but also challenging because I failed this run twice before attemption Xbox version.
Every boss you beat counts as kill, even if you did not kill them. And carding enemies also counts as kill.
>the homogenized design is ugly as sin
It looks way ebtter than (some of?= the versions they put on Steam years ago. Like V for example. The characters in those versions look...I don't know how to describe it. Too smooth?
The old Steam versions were the Android versions. They redid the sprites to make them look more mobile game like. It boosted sales by over 500%. Zoomers hate pixel art, they love mobile game art.
I have never watched a spoony video. Even as someone who follows youtubers and shit to some degree he never seemed relevant, even among the world of content cteation.
This anon in this thread is weirdly obssessed with this 4th rate youtuber
You had to be there to understand the lolcow that is spoony.
>the homogenized design is ugly as sin
It looks way ebtter than (some of?= the versions they put on Steam years ago. Like V for example. The characters in those versions look...I don't know how to describe it. Too smooth?
Every FF from 7 onwards, including 8, is a huge piece of shit and playing these games will only degrade your mind and turn you into a moron, as evidenced by OP. In fact, if not for moronic milennials who's actions are driven entirely by corporate programming drilled into their heads by fabricated childhood nostalgia via aggressive marketing this series would not be remembered at all.
Are you by chance, autistic?
No normal person would get enjoyment out of having to draw 99 out of every monster 3 times for max stats, and the love story really tanks the fricking plot super hard.
It's one guy. The language is similar and the sentiment is always phrased the same way, that FF8 is le underated gem and le bestest gaem evar! It's some sperg who loves FF8 and hates that every other FF of that era is better selling/more beloved than it so now they spam threads about it on Ganker.
They aren't as insane as Barry but if people start to shittalk FF8 he'll get as defensive as Barry did, and from there he'll spiral into lashing out at things his peceived enemies love, and then he'll become Barry 2.0.
Also FF8 is complete dogshit for reasons everyone in this thread has gone into detail about, but just going to add >LONG AS FRICK UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENES FOR EVERY GUARDIAN FORCE WITH ONLY THE BOOST MINI-GAME TO KEEP YOUR ATTENTION DURING IT, AND SOME OF THEM LIKE DIABLOS WOULDN'T EVEN LET YOU USE BOOST
Game was utter dogshit and a complete waste of time.
That's one way to phrase them. I prefer one that got attacked by Sephiroth and lived vs the one that died.

I dunno Anon I appreciate they kept the OG move in, but he can fly and is falling way too slow in that scene looks goofy as frick. I think he's being smug?
It's perfectly fine. The backgrounds aren't any blurrier than the original, and the models look objectively better. The only problem is it forces the PSX music, when a good soundfont would easily make the original PC version's midi soundtrack sound better for everything that doesn't have real vocals in it.
They royally frick up the payoff of the most interesting part of the story with regard to Squall and Laguna's juxtaposition emotionally
Outside of that, the pacing of the rest of the game also just cannibalizes itself at some point midway through. It's a fun game to break, it's enjoyable. It ain't better than 7, though
>16:9 widescreen
Death to every video maker who does this. The game wasn't made for widescreen. You do not need to stretch a video for widescreen. It looks awful.
I'm seeing conflicting things here, should you level up? Shouldn't you? Should I draw 99 of every spell early on? I already lost the Ifrit card should I just start again?
I love FFVIII but I can understand how it rubs some the wrong way
- Junctioning is easy to screw up if you don't pay attention
- You really need to take advantage of carding and refining if you want to do good damage, which seems to be beyond a lot of gamers' willingness to experiment. If you don't, battles are horribly dull and slow
- 'We all knew each other as kids, except we forgot, and somehow reunited as teens by pure coincidence'
- The prison is shit, let's be fair
Great game, best ending in all of FF, but no it's not better than FF7.
It's so hard to take any critique on any Final Fantasy seriously when it's mostly repeated points from video essays of people who don't understand anything about the games, from the mechanics to the stories. It's a weird thing to notice when you actually play the games.
Except I love the game. I just don't want to play it like a homosexual, so I play it the right way.
[...]
Just go right. It'll take you everywhere you need to go, then outside, then run in straight. Walla. Bone Apple Teeth. You're done and without become lack toes in toddler ants.
Not all of us used guides to play the game. How are you supposed to know to go right all the time?
I think it's just because the draw system is kinda stupid and counterproductive. You need magic to boost stats but that means you can't use magic without lowering stats
>All of the characters from this that appear in Kingdom Hearts somehow have more personality than their original game. >It takes until disc 2 to know frick-all about the main character. Anything before that is him brooding and having internal monologues about whatever. >Plot has many pants on head moronic moments. President of GalBADia gets killed in front of a crowd, no panic. Edea summons monsters that run through the crowd. It's all cool. Cutscene shows Squall and Irvine crouch walking through parade to be sneaky as if they wouldn't be spotted by everyone. All of a sudden, Balamb has a garden master that wasn't mentioned before, and he gets killed and dismissed almost immediately from when he's made known to the player. Party reunites after they fight the second party in a tank that attacks him them because the game needed a convenient plot device to reunite everyone. Squall gets made leader of Balamb because apparently there are no other veteran Seed people. Everyone likes Squall despite the fact that he's a brooding shut-in. Everyone is dead set on Squall loving Rinoa even though he never really mentions it much in his brooding prior to his 180 of now Rinoa is the most important thing in his life. Takes coma Rinoa by himself and sets off to fix her, as if the rest of the party wouldn't gladly help him. Then the party somehow gets ahead of him and then it turns out they were escorting Edea because?...
I could keep going but man FF8's plot is just so dumb.
homosexual, I have played every mainline Final fantasy without voice acting, and 7 does a much better job conveying character and personality than whatever the frick 8 does. I'm sorry if Squall having an inner monologue about vague concepts doesn't really convey much character. Out of the PS1 trilogy, FF8 does it the worst.
When a game sucks, you take a mulligan. That's what Remake/Rebirth are. 8 is getting no remake because you can't improve on perfection. Cope and seethe.
What a great shitty take. I could care less about the FF7 remake, but by your logic, I guess 3 and 4 were bad games, and 2 will never get a remake either because it's also perfection.
Were there any other African-Galbadians in the whole game? I guess there were couple of black students in Balamb. Dunno what Raijin was though. A latino or something?
You should be Rank A at that point in the game.
Lmao if youre rank A at the prison youre a fricking moronic casual
I try to be level 30 right after I use the lamp, and I do enough tests to push my rank to match. I save the rest of my leveling for after I get the Ragnarok, and I can get a level per battle on The Island Closest to Hell.
Tests are the easiest way to level seed so ira best to save them for later in the game.
Money is not an issue in this game, esp cause theres ateast 1 or 2 money exploits
>Giving 2 fricks about the rank when you can make infinite money quickly with Recov Med-RF anyway.
Team Rocket appropriation of Diglet culture is one of their most dastardly crimes.
Getting GF abilities is late game when I can farm cactuars. The SeeD money is good to start with.
>still has no real graphic mods after 2 decades
I bet you have graphics mods on your body too troony
>projecting
These tactics are getting old schlomo
These days I only play the remastered version on my phone when I feel like replaying it, even if it's inferior.
The graphics are better at least.
I bet duckstation with internal resolution set to 4k looks 1000 times better.
Yeah. They had a lot of fake characters in 8.
Here it is with upscaled background textures.
Well that does help. Though that man bun dude on the right grew man boobs. Guess that's fitting.
Playing above 640x480 or even lower, since the PSX didn't render at that res makes it pretty apparent how many background characters were actually baked into the environment. The had to have been plenty of performance overhead still there even on the PSX to have them all at least be models.
>no mod to allow towns to be visited in disc 4
There's a relatively robust AI upscalrd backgrounds mod
It's shit and dull, I've tried maybe 4-5 times to get into it and never manage more than a few hours
Disk 3.
Filtered by the junction.
yeah, probably
i love the game, it might be my favourite ff game but i really don't like how it makes you not use magic
>how it makes you not use magic
To be fair, most offensive magic wasn't very good at being junction fodder.
So matching elemental weaknesses didn't come with much of an opportunity cost when you're junctioning shit like demi, dispel, berserk to stats and only stapling elements on when countering damage-types.
>To be fair, most offensive magic wasn't very good at being junction fodder.
???
The best magic for Str and most stats are Ultima, Meteor, Holy, Flare, and Tornado. All offensive. Triple for speed, regen etc for health or defense
The best for STR was ultima
>Ultima Meteor Holy, Flare, Tornado
Ultima was the best magic for like everything. However
>Meteor, Holy, Flare,
Absolutely not
Meltdown, triple, Full-Life, Aura
>Meltdown, triple, Full-Life, Aura
Based and all you need
Strength is the most useful stat so it holds more weight.
Meltdown, triple, aura, etc are great for certain stats but meteor, flare, and holy are the best for strength after ultima.
the real iasue here is your original sentiment is wrong. various types of magic are useful for their related stat
>Strength is the most useful stat
True but not necessarily. RST, ESP and VIT will allow you to stay on yellow and do special attacks without risking a KO. Wow, a couplet
Yeah this. I was a noob to jrpgs when I played so I didn't get why you couldn't just equip things.
You're punished for levelling up.
People who think the junction system was complicated are moronic, it was just
>oh you've switched parties now you have to swap junctions again oopsies we removed everything set it all back up teehee
The only actual good part of the game was the soundtrack
>The only actual good part of the game was the soundtrack
Water and water and water water
>Laguna and his friends were far more interesting than anything Squall or the others had going on and got completely shafted and went nowhere in the last half
Laguna is an unfunny pratfalling clown and his friends are cardboard cutouts. Showing them in only short glimpses was a very good thing.
>Enc-None
>He doesn't Card and Refine every random encounter
>The "Junction" system was complicated/difficult/taxing
Hmm
>The best way to play the game is getting Enc-None as soon as you can and leaving it on for the rest of the game because leveling makes enemies stronger instead of you
Like many games, morons who don't want to learn what they are doing pigeonhole themselves into using an unfun, tedious tactic and blame the game despite refusing to properly engage with it.
Enc-none really is the best way, because random encounters are gayer than Wrong board
I think not playing the game would make it easier to avoid playing it.
The battles are too often, aren't challenging at all, and just detract from the story arc. Skipping them was the smartest thing Square implemented in the game.
>aren't challenging at all
applies to the whole game
>detract from the story arc
so watch a playthrough if you're only interested in the story.
>don't use this mechanic that's in the game because I like tedium and so should you!
Don't draw from enemies except GF's from bosses and occasional draws. Don't level until you get the Ragnarok. It's quicker and you can multitask with getting spells. Frick that card. It's not important. Make sure you're getting refine abilities from GFs (set them to learn).
>don't use this mechanic that's in the game because I like tedium and so should you!
Why are you being dishonest? If you don't want to play the game, I'm asking why you're playing it.
Except I love the game. I just don't want to play it like a homosexual, so I play it the right way.
Just go right. It'll take you everywhere you need to go, then outside, then run in straight. Walla. Bone Apple Teeth. You're done and without become lack toes in toddler ants.
>Except I love the game. I just don't want to play it
That's all I see if your solution is "turn off all encounters as soon as the game starts"
I mean, tell yourself what you want. I'm just wondering why you're playing the game at all if you want to avoid 99% of it.
Why do you play the game if you want to avoid using GF abilities?
I don't recall ever saying I never use Enc-none, only asking why you would
>get Enc-None as soon as you can and leaving it on for the rest of the game
It sounds like you're trying to avoid my point out of intellectual dishonesty.
Why would I use the best ability in the game as soon as I get it? Because it's the best ability in the game.
So do you play FF7 with the built in character booster?
What built in character booster? Had I known about one, I probably would have.
all modern re-releases of FF7 allow you to turn off encounters, max your characters, and make you invincible. In fact, most FF games that are playable on modern consoles/PC come with these built in.
>Had I known about one, I probably would have.
Right, because you don't like them as games. Which is why I pointed out that an even easier solution would be to just watch them online.
That's a cheat. It's not the same as an actual mechanic built into the game since its original release. It's like telling me not to use warp zones in Mario because I need to experience all 32 levels.
>That's a cheat
It's built into the game and requires no third party software.
>original release
Sounds like an arbitrary excuse for the same result.
No, you're arguing semantics when it's clear. FF8 has a built in mechanic through junctioning to halve or zero the encounter rate. That's not comparable with shit added in ports that edit memory. You're a disingenuous shithead, but that's to be expected on Ganker.
>No, you're arguing semantics when it's clear
Yes I did explicitly accuse you of arguing semantics and said that they are actually the same thing.
>FF8 has a built in mechanic to zero the encounter rate
Right and the other games also have a built in mechanic to zero the encounter rate.
>You're a disingenuous shithead
Maybe you just have poor reading comprehension and lack basic critical thinking skills
Ah, just a liar then. Now I know where you stand.
>Right and the other games also have a built in mechanic to zero the encounter rate.
No they don't. Later releases have a cheat menu for zoomers who can't be assed to play the game. 8 has it in the actual game
>the actual game
semantics, those menus are in the 'actual game'
>Ah, just a liar then
8 has one of those IN ADDITION to the one in the actual game. Differentiating it completely from the others. You moron
He's intent on lying on the Internet for no money. He can't be helped.
Semantics

>Sounds like an arbitrary excuse for the same result.

>I mean, tell yourself what you want. I'm just wondering why you're playing the game at all if you want to avoid 99% of it.
It's ultimately arbitrary that you try to distinguish it. The point initially was simply asking why you even bother to play the game when you could simply watch the cutscenes online.
Ok which of the original ps1 FF games have this available to you? Just ff8? Exactly.
>Semantics
Oh so now we're arguing that this is back in 1999 and we're not talking about playing FF8 today? The original posts in
seem to explicitly suggest that we're not talking about 1999
I really don't see why you're starting to get upset about this. My point was simple. Why even play the game if you hate it and can just watch the cutscenes? The best way to avoid the encounters is to simply not play the game period.
It's almost like you're intentionally avoiding answering that.
It's almost like you're a liar.
I'm sorry my simple question mindbroke you.
Yes, let me get on YouTube in 1999 and watch the storyline.
Awful writing, level scaling and junction system being obstuse
I didn't think there were people too dumb to play a Final Fantasy game, but here you go.
>the game is too easy because it's easy to exploit
>n-no! you're just too dumb!
?
>Over the course of the story he changes from a brooding antisocial prick to an overly vulnerable crybaby.
He was a vulnerable crybaby from the start and was putting a front. Through the story he gained something to care about and stated having more conviction, but remained a crybaby nonetheless.
He's also a kid, which makes being a crybaby tolerable.
Your "easy" method of exploiting it is going around your elbow to get to your thumb. There's much easier ways to amass spells than drawing from enemies like your name is Chris Burke.
Also, the best spells aren't on enemies.
>lmao
Ah, now I understand.
Drawing magic at most points in the game is nearly always outpaced by refining
>with a guide
Or you open up the menu and read
What the do you think T - Mag RF means? You don't have to guess, the game literally tells you "Refines Lightning/Wind Magic from items"
This is on par with the people who somehow missed Quezcotl and Shiva. Even ignoring fluff text and mandatory dialogue telling you where it is, it was in the manual too.
No game in the world could accommodate that amount of blatant disregard.
NTA
But FF8 has a great tutorial section in its menu.
Second
>difficult
So spending a good 10 hours drawing spells when you can just refine them in seconds is optimal?
ah yes, walking around waiting my SeeD pay so I can buy items to refine them with my GF abilities which I can only get by levelling up which coincidentally is the worst thing you can do in this game
I'm just racking my brain over how lying on the internet for literally no money is a good idea, but it happens in every thread on Ganker.
>buying items
The hole of shittiness at gaming you're digging is deep.
i don't give a shit. I played the game once when it came out and then sold it off lmao.
DSP energy
why are you so dishonest? I played it from start to finish and I still regret it
I've played it from start to finish as well (probably over 100 times).
>probably over 100 times
those are grounds for mental illness
Just so, Rinoa calls him "the most handsome guy here2.
its honestly not that bad. The forced love story kinda makes sense if you keep rinoa with squall all the time. Ultimecia castle is still the most stylish final dungeon ever in a ff game
>Only get by levelling
Bosses gave AP and 0 XP for a reason
Buying items was never a good idea.
You were comparatively stronger and had access to better junctions with less effort at 40 than you are at 10
Refine is only really a quick process if you have a guide or prior knowledge to know what and where.
I keep logs while gaming, so refining was easy for me. Gitgud, I guess?
Who decides optimal play?
Careful: if you say "developer" then you seem very flawed in your motivation to purchase, play and grind something you clearly dislike.
If you say "player" then... don't play that way.
None of this really matters because the game is oozing with style.
>first game to drop the default blue text boxes in favor of generic gray
>first game to change cartoonish design to generic semi realistic style that aged like milk
>setting is just contemporary modern-ish world with even less fantasy elements than vii
You have a funny definition of style, friend.
It's all nostalgia. Accept it and you may even develop proper taste.
its blend of realism and fantasy is fantastic. it is far more fantastic than you suggest though. no, I don't think it's just nostalgia, it genuinely has great aesthetics.
And XV's opening where you push a broken car is peak world building, am I right?
No but it's a nice character introduction.
But you get to hear a good song get bastardized!
>It's the point in series where all party member designs devolved into metrosexual twinks.
You should see what the FF6 art looks like.
I blame this homosexual.
I remember the average person liking FF8 until Spooney did some video essay about it and half of it was one long complaint about the draw system. I know, I know, grind mechanics? In a JRPG from 1999?? Thats crazy!
And then every millennial teenager with a computer saw his takes and parroted it and its been like that ever since.
lmao based spoony still making 8trannies seethe
>8trannies
yes
Sorceresses were meant to be monstrosities.
He was always right
Even the draw system was over-exaggerated.
Only time I ever use Draw is when a boss has a GF or ludicrously OP spellls for that point in the game like triple
You can get better spells and much quicker by using the refine tools
I didn't need spoony video to know FF8 is a half finished garbage.
FF8 desperately needs a remake to fix everything bad about it.
Remakes are only for the bad games. 9 and 10 next.
I cannot imagine grinding AP in 7 without the W item elixir duplication for the magic pots, I just would not have done it otherwise.
Draw quantity and accuracy is tied to the magic stat. I think once you break the thresholds you get like 20 per draw.
His apology shouldn't be taken too seriously.
he's used as a scapegoat by FF8 fans to dismiss criticisms
Gay gay gay sissy gay gay gay
He has been paying for his crimes against FF8 since the upload of that video.
Every single one of them is better than 7.
I still can't believe R=U
That was such a mind frick
FF8 is probably the first game in series where it's most vocal detractors never played it. Stemming all the way back to Spoony's shit review that caused my first exposure to youtuber cultists in a FF music forum.
These days it's usually the same points from back then. But at least people don't try to pretend triple triad is necessary to beat the game anymore.
>many people
You've been rused. VIII is one of the most popular FF's along with VII and X. Internet spergs are not people.
This, also most posts on the internet are literally made by bots. There are non-human posts in this thread too.
>not grinding on island closest to heaven
>aura aura aura aura aura
I love this game, but that shit right there had me PISSED as a kid
KINOOOOOOOO i was genuinely baffled that fricking seifer killed him lmao
Seifer was possessed by the real Odin.
Fantastic, of course.
Off the top of my head, fun facts
>Odin had one strike, "Zantetsuken," and it did not work on bosses.
>Gilgamesh had 4 strikes, and all of them DID work on bosses.
The Junction System is busted. You can get like 5000hp after getting Siren at the beginning of the game. A shame because the world, atmosphere, story and music are kino
>You can get like 5000hp
Squall appreciates that. And so do I.
>that excited feeling you get when Lionheart decides to activate
Soul
Nice.
15 killed it off properly. Nobody ever praises that game for anything.
Seifer should have joined the cast again at the end of Disc 2 as it was an end to the whole Edea plot line he had no reason to stay "evil" after that.
He was a Sorceress's knight. Edea was no longer a sorceress, so he went with the one that spoke to him after Edea lost her powers, Adel.
To be fair, I smiled when Aerith died in the original.
>To be fair, I smiled when Aerith died in the original.
Kek, same.
>weaboo otaku loser bait Persona 5 stole Final Fantasy's thunder.
But as popular as it is here, I never hear any gamers in the real world talking about Persona. In its heyday (even when it was in the shitter with 9 and later), Final Fantasy was heavily discussed. Even 16 got some conversation (though it died off shortly after release). I wouldn't know about Persona other than from Ganker.
>Aerith's death is terribly done in the remake and that's a fact. And it doesn't help that Aerith is "dead" meaning she's not conclusively dead because she actively fights the final boss of Rebirth and Cloud is not even sad that she died he's smiling in the ending during the send off before the credits.
Holy
Firstly, samegay, secondly, it's pure kino.
>People saying 16, Remake and Rebirth are bad.
I like 16 but it was very obviously rushed out the door and likely went through development hell. The obvious semi-prime Bahamut that you fight with no fanfare and the rather extreme amounts of backtracking certainly don't help.
It's not often I play a game and can feel the rewrites.
saying 16, Remake and Rebirth are bad.
the only person saying that those games are bad defends garbage like Forspoken
>play the remake
>only use Squall, Quistis and Zell unless otherwise forced
>turn on fast forward and draw 99 of each spell from enemies
>just move entire junction sets whenever forced to change party
>just cast Aura on Squall and Zell and do like 500000 damage by spamming the quickest combos in Zells Limit break
Skill issue
>just move entire junction sets whenever forced to change party
Yea this is how the game is played... why would you ever need more than 3 junction sets?
im on a 100% completionist run, playing for the first time sinxe i was a kid.
junction is pretty interestinf and could be fixed with a few tweaks to things like draw and magic consumption.
kid me really fricked up cheating, this is the one game to not use a level 99 gameshark code on
Final Trashsy was never good
There's nothing that could be done to make it worse, hell, even the timejannies wouldn't be a bad fit in FFVIII storyline.
It was very beloved at the time.
Most of the hate comes from people who wanted more FF7 in particular. And then Spoony's tirades happened.
7 is the only "old" Final Fantasy game I've played, I was going to do 8 9 10 12. I really don't like 9's art style, though.
What are the right restrictions to place on yourself to balance the gameplay?
>can only draw from each enemy once
>can only challenge each character to Triple Triad 3x (until card queen at the end?)
>can only refine a given card type (e.g. Geezard, Tyrannosaur) once
Do you think this would work?
I just play the game and enjoy it tbh. Not sure what the problem is
It's a JRPG, they're not meant to be challenging or require much thought or strategy. If there's one thing I recommend it's to not intentionally break the game by exploiting card modding.
I occasionally do no-draw run (basically I don't give any characters ability to draw, except for when I know I can draw a summon in a fight) to remind myself that this game being too difficult or requires grinding magic is just internet gaslighting by children who weren't even born during game's release.
>everyone locked to one GF
>everyone can't have the same ability(magic/draw/item/card/etc)
If we're being serious? The usual;
>no % multiplier junctions beyond 20%
>no stacking multiple modifiers that impact the same stat
>no running from fights
>no enc-half/none
>no aura
>no spamming swaps to trigger a limit break from party member cycling
The former keeps your stats in line with enemies, the later stops the one cheese that would be available, and forces "regular" progression onto you. The downside is that the last disc becomes quite difficult.
why rinoa looks exactly like tifa?
Ff8s junction system and such is flawed fpr sure but I would rather play something flawed but different and interesting than the same shit over and over
>drawing to 100 and refining makes the game too easy
>don't level up because the game gets hard
This is why I can't take you homosexuals seriously despite 8 having legit criticisms.
huh...wow....it's...it's almost like the whole gameplay thing in this game is shitty and broken...damn...
No shit you passive aggressive homosexual.
calm down you little b***h
Don't type like a homosexual then.
stop sucking my dick and I will
>game hard
Wrong
>game too easy
Yes
Do you understand the problem now?
>game too easy
>Yes
>Do you understand the problem now?
I don't because every FF is braindead difficulty wise and it was never about any of the titles being hard.
Nobody said the game gets too hard from that.
The leveling just feels pointless outside of minmaxing stats through GF passives.
Keeping Squall/Zell at low HP and just spamming limit breaks defeats anything though
I know. Your point?
the game is easy
Duh
>Zell
Did you know Zell is a reference to Marty McFly?
They didn't likr the draw system and the twits was "stupid".
Final Fantasy 13 is the true worst game in the series and I know there's some anon trying to pull an FF8 and say it's overly-hated just because he likes Lightning a little too much.
>Final Fantasy 13 is the true worst game in the series
yeah it is but 13-2 and lightning returns were very decent games. FF8 never had a "redemption"
13-2 is 10/10
13 was not what people wanted and has its issues but it was fine outside the linearity.
FF8's redemption was the first millisecond of the intro, and it was perfect to the end
I still haven't played those sequels. I could never finish FF13 because I get so damn bored playing it.
>13-2 and lightning returns were very decent games
lmao
lmao indeed, they were more than decent. possibly the best games Square Enix ever produced
13-2 is dogshit, but as far as Final Fantasy kino goes, LR is top tier
nice joke
8 didn't need one. You don't need redemption for something that's good.
Hi, FF thread spammer! How many threads about Final homosexualry are you planning on making today?
the worst FF game is still better than 95% of games especially with how bad the industry is. thevleast popular wine is still a better drink than dog water
That is very true. Even the Final Fantasy games I don't care for have a level of polish to them.
You can grind up in any game to be overpowered but people do it more often in 8 than other games.
Why? How would you fix junction/draw?
Give the characters mana which is a cap for how much magic they can junction
E.G. fire costs 1, firga 2, firaga 4, ultima 5
So by the end game with 999 mana, you can only equip like 50 of each third stage spell to at most 5 stats (or obviously less spells to more stats etc)
>Playing IV rn
>Planning to play V and VI next
B-tier bros... we're eating good today.
>12 that high
move III I IV VI and V to F and I'll agree
say what you want, but even the biggest FF8 hater can't deny that the beginning of FF8 (up until you finish dollet mission) is kino as frick.
Every disc has kino moments. Balamb vs Galbadia Gardens was probably the most cinematic games have ever looked at that time.
>[Random]
Random-Same-Plus-Open (and no Direct, Elemental or Same-Wall) is secretly the most exciting ruleset. However, if you lose any of the rules, except Random, it turns godawful.
>has spread throughout the region
it's the patrician choice
just opened this — it's a jumpscare if anyone is afraid of those
This game had soulful art design, timeless, something you wish you could live in. FRICK IVALICE, boring shit.
I liked Ivalice enough for what it is. But it really should have just stayed in the FFT as opposed to that foolhardy initiative to balloon it into it's own universe.
They never really stopped trying to do that.
Ivalice moogles > fat moogles
FF8 and 10 have a Y2K futuristic aesthetic. Everything is so ROUND. 11 and 12 had it a bit too, but they mixed it with a medieval aesthetic.
Why the FRICK does SQenix keep trying to puch Ivalice? To me it's a fairly run of the mill fantasy setting.
Maybe they like the name? It's not like any "Ivalice" outside of FFT bears any resemblance to the original world.
Balamb Garden....
Beautiful.
I always wanted to make a "card save" where I play the game until disc 3, and just use that save file dedicated to just playing cards all over the world map.
is this one of those shitpost threads like the "DMC2 is actually better than 1 and 3" or "Fallout 3 and 4 are the best in the series" meems?
>avant-garde Final Fantasy game
Junction system is fricking ass, the level scaling was just insane in a bad way, and the writing was dull.
>writing was dull
MMOS dont count of course so forget about 11 and 14 as the mmo genre is all awful and should never have been given mainline numbered status.
>dissidia 012 nowhere in sight
Come the frick on.
well there we go I suppose. remove 14 as MMOs do not count. the top FF games are 10, 7, 6, 9. 5 and 8
>13 higher than 12.
Discarded.
the fricking junction system is elite level shit.
>Punishes you for killing enemies
>Rewards you for spamming DRAW FOR 30 MINUTES.
It looks and sounds amazing thou
also to add to this, you get more combat power for engaging in junction system but you are punished for doing combat so all the systems are fricked up
You are not fucming punished for leveling up.
When I first played FF8 as a kid, I thought the draw system was cool.
>Whoa I can cast Fire 100 times?
>FF9 Exalibur 2 Perfect Game and FF8 Completionist runs back to back
Ive becomed conditioned to fear leveling up and killing enemies
>FF9 Exalibur 2 Perfect Game
Which path
what do you mean
You have to choose a stat path for that run due to forced exp
oh i dont remember i think freya or whatwver the forgettable rat things name was.
i remember having ro reset that endgame segment with music like 100 fricking times though
Thank god for Chocobo World.
Little wienersucker does all the grinding for me while I sleep and work
I'll tell you why. Oh, also the "when did the loop begin" story.
it was an absolute disappointment on launch, it never overcame this fact
>friend and i want to use pc for msn with cute girls
>his brother set the xp logon password
>friend gives up
>wait theres a hint, lets see what it is
>"rinoa's friend"
Only time being a game nerd helped me irl
Whats that get yourself go to balamb garden post?
Havent seen that in years
kill* yourself
>Shes the most bland looking librarian dork looking uggo ever conceived
you are gay kys
Says the guy attracted to women that look like men
What the frick are you even smoking ya daft c**t?!
You really are a genuine pajeet homosexual
Oh youre European. Explains a lot honestly
>Oh youre European
Nope, but you are still a homosexual, kys.
Selphie = Quistis>>
Rinoa > Selphie >>>>>>>>> Quistis
Hipsters always chose someone just because theyre not the main love interest to feel unique.
Tifa, Yuna, Yukari (persona 3), Ann (p5), Rise (p4), Rinoa, etc. 99/100 times the main girl is the best.
You are basic.
"Whip me, mommy!" is the most basic-tier take.
A lot of people don't see that, but you actually can apply that logic to every character and I sometimes genuinely can't tell if it was intentional or not, but it kind of works when you view them through Squall's character arc and take into account their individual experiences.
>Although Zell is obviously a Marty McFly reference, because he was picked on by Seifer he developed a combatative personality
>Quistis is as what you've said
>Seifer literally LARPs as Laguna
>Both Irvine and Selphie share similarity where they were separated from the group, but not adopted either, Irvine openly admits to not liking lone sniper persona and hating loneliness and Selphie could be interpreted as overcompensating with cheerfulness to escape feeling loneliness
Everything but the combat system is among the top tier of Final Fantasy games.
7, 8, and X are the peak of FF. None of the other games come close
It just feels awkward in ways beyond the english dub having weird timings to try and line up with the japanese facial animation and the implication you're supposed to take the horrid models they gave even major characters that aren't the main cast and Seymour seriously when they're flat, unmoving textures yapping.
>outdated
oh no this 1999 game plays like a game from 1999 how terrible
Fricking moron.
Zoomers would be afraid to copy his opinions, unless he censored and rereleased his reviews to remove the part where he calls squall's hair "homosexual".
The ranking.
While on the subject:
>best Dark Souls is SotFS
>best Diablo is 3
>best Silent Hill is Homecoming
>best Iron Maiden album is No Prayer For The Dying
Any list without X in the top rank is instantly invalidated.
Let me guess, you like it because it was the first FF game with voices.
I unironically feel bad for your shit taste.
It hurts my feelings when anon who doesn't have the balls to post his list tries to insult me. 🙁
I'm trying to wake you up. It's you who are insulting yourself with that list.
Women tier list

Cutenoa #1
Cute villain.
Is it possible to clear the entire board on TT?
CPU ai seems more determined to have at least one card than winning
Basically yes, especially with Similar, Plus and Combo rules.
>why do so many people consider this to be one of the worst games in the series?
Level scaling
Having to draw or play a shit card game to get stronger without touching the level scaling
Ultimecia is a lameass villian that people have to latch onto debunked fanfiction to make her seem interesting
The love interest and story feel rushed and poorly developed
Everyone but Squall feels unecessary in terms of the plot
The big plot twist is introduced and then immediately forgotten
and yet still better than FF15
>and yet still better than FF15
FF15 at least isn't hopelessly outdated and isn't turn-based, it at least has technological advancements over it, whereas FF8 both bad game design and outdated gamedesign.
turn based is good.
grid, ath, equations, planning, strategy, excel sheets, etc are fun.
zoomers can go play fortnite and watch screaming youtubers. theyll understand when theyre older
I'll take a game that requires skill instead of turn based
>FFXV
>skill
Don't make me post the webm, Barry.
Such as?
>FF15 at least isn't hopelessly outdated and isn't turn-based
so you are saying that THIS is better than turn based?
Yes, at least you DO something, you have an output when you press buttons, you must position yourself, do timing. Turn based just removes the gameplay from the game.
holding O might be 'doing something' to you but it isn't fun to me.
>holding O might be 'doing something' to you but it isn't fun to me.
agreed, Holding O wasn't fun and when the DLCs were still Hold O, I never got them
Press X -> Attack -> wait for turn -> Press X -> Attack -> wait for turn -> press X -> Attack -> more waiting
Wow, great gameplay.
>makes fun of JRPGs
>but probably plays garbage like Trails
And I know you're gonna deny it. No sane person would ever admit that.
Oh, sorry I think you meant
>Attack
>Heal
>Firaga
>Attack
>Heal
>Blizzaga
>Attack
>Heal
>Thundaga
>Oh hey the boss is weak to lightning
>you win lol
You're right, it's dumb.
Holding O is much better.
>you must position yourself, do timing
No. You just hold O forever.
All other FFs > 15 > 8 > 2 > 13
Doing
>pic related
run + not using Quezacotl and Card command in any shape and form was actually fun but also challenging because I failed this run twice before attemption Xbox version.
Every boss you beat counts as kill, even if you did not kill them. And carding enemies also counts as kill.
i dont get why people like pixel remasters. the homogenized design is ugly as sin and they remove features and bonus content.
sure things like speedup are nice, but not worth losing content and looking at fermented vomit over
This. Just play the Wii VC versions, they're the definitive versions.
Emulators have speed up.
>the homogenized design is ugly as sin
It looks way ebtter than (some of?= the versions they put on Steam years ago. Like V for example. The characters in those versions look...I don't know how to describe it. Too smooth?
Frick this workplace keyboard.
But I'm changing my job in July so maybe the new one will be better.
The job promoted ff1 sprites are wank.
What's the best graphics mod for Remastered?
it's gay and it sucks and you're an emo homosexual
It's worse than FFVII and FFIX but still better than FFXIII and FFXV.
It alright
Are you by chance, autistic?
No normal person would get enjoyment out of having to draw 99 out of every monster 3 times for max stats, and the love story really tanks the fricking plot super hard.
The compulsion to get max stats is what is autistic, moron.
So has it been one guy pretending ff8 is good a la barry or have there actually been a handful of different people that could stomach it?
frick off newbie
It's one guy. The language is similar and the sentiment is always phrased the same way, that FF8 is le underated gem and le bestest gaem evar! It's some sperg who loves FF8 and hates that every other FF of that era is better selling/more beloved than it so now they spam threads about it on Ganker.
They aren't as insane as Barry but if people start to shittalk FF8 he'll get as defensive as Barry did, and from there he'll spiral into lashing out at things his peceived enemies love, and then he'll become Barry 2.0.
Also FF8 is complete dogshit for reasons everyone in this thread has gone into detail about, but just going to add
>LONG AS FRICK UNSKIPPABLE CUTSCENES FOR EVERY GUARDIAN FORCE WITH ONLY THE BOOST MINI-GAME TO KEEP YOUR ATTENTION DURING IT, AND SOME OF THEM LIKE DIABLOS WOULDN'T EVEN LET YOU USE BOOST
Game was utter dogshit and a complete waste of time.
Here is the FF6/FF9 guy, ranting about some non-existant FF8 boogeyman
There's a few of us who go to each FF8 thread. It's not just your boogeyman. Also, summons are a low test way to play.
What the frick are you talking about you stupid Black person.
Take your meds.
>Having a meltdown
And here we see canon date girl get bothered by non-canon date girl
I would be bothered by some horseface jamming her face in my spectacular breasts as well.
That's one way to phrase them. I prefer one that got attacked by Sephiroth and lived vs the one that died.
What is his expression trying to convey here?
I dunno Anon I appreciate they kept the OG move in, but he can fly and is falling way too slow in that scene looks goofy as frick. I think he's being smug?
Happiness.
Is the modern mot remaster pc port worth it?
not-remastered
Played the remaster last year it sucked stick to the original.
It's perfectly fine. The backgrounds aren't any blurrier than the original, and the models look objectively better. The only problem is it forces the PSX music, when a good soundfont would easily make the original PC version's midi soundtrack sound better for everything that doesn't have real vocals in it.
For me?
You never understood Balmb garden?
They royally frick up the payoff of the most interesting part of the story with regard to Squall and Laguna's juxtaposition emotionally
Outside of that, the pacing of the rest of the game also just cannibalizes itself at some point midway through. It's a fun game to break, it's enjoyable. It ain't better than 7, though
Did you know Rinoa was meant to be with the gang much earlier on
I'm too lazy to watch.
Does she have any spoken lines, or was she added just for the (battle) test?
She doesn't talk, but Riona is in the CGI cutscene where they run away from the Spider robot.
Ok, I just saw it.
That's interesting. But the Spiderbot is not killed by Quistis in this one. Does that mean she was supposed to be added later?
Probably.
>16:9 widescreen
Death to every video maker who does this. The game wasn't made for widescreen. You do not need to stretch a video for widescreen. It looks awful.
Wow, the ATB system is fricking awful, it's like letting the moron have multiple turns in chess while thinking about your next move.
Instant turn based will always be better than ATB
Great game, best ending in all of FF, but no it's not better than FF7.
>why do so many people consider this to be one of the worst games in the series?
Video essays, lots and lots of video essays.
It's so hard to take any critique on any Final Fantasy seriously when it's mostly repeated points from video essays of people who don't understand anything about the games, from the mechanics to the stories. It's a weird thing to notice when you actually play the games.
Man I love FF8 I should go replay it its been a while
8 needed a shota
You meant to post this right? This is one of the worst parts of the game.
meant to quote this post
>just go right, all the time
Hey, at least it's not the desert from Breath of Fire 3
Not all of us used guides to play the game. How are you supposed to know to go right all the time?
Because there is a map?
This is optional though?
Yes, but it's easy and the GF has good abilities.
Look at the map and notice you're always facing forward even though you went right?
I beat this as a kid and I felt so smart
Feels good tobe high IQ and not black
The hardest parts for me were Zell's shit in the underwater research facility, and the painting room in Ultimecia's castle.
All of the characters are unlikable.
I was a moron that actually spent hours drawing fire magic from mosquitoes as a kid and even I dont hate the game.
I think it's just because the draw system is kinda stupid and counterproductive. You need magic to boost stats but that means you can't use magic without lowering stats
>the draw system
Whenever someone says this instead of the junction system, you know exactly why they hate the game and how moronic they are.
Spells are kind of useless outside of meltdown and aura (float and blind for one fight each, and you can junction the latter for the same effect).
Doomtrain until you get meltdown, then aura. Game won.
I want a FF8 anime
why do turd worlders love ff8 so much
>All of the characters from this that appear in Kingdom Hearts somehow have more personality than their original game.
I could keep going but man FF8's plot is just so dumb.
>delusional statements dreamed up by the deranged
>somehow have more personality in Kingdom Hearts
I see; you're the social type that needs voice acting and hates books.
homosexual, I have played every mainline Final fantasy without voice acting, and 7 does a much better job conveying character and personality than whatever the frick 8 does.
>I could care less
it has no Black folk so amerikans think its bad
kiros was a Black person
Were there any other African-Galbadians in the whole game? I guess there were couple of black students in Balamb. Dunno what Raijin was though. A latino or something?
If anything needed a remake, it was FF8.
Plebeians
