Wyll doesn't have any internal trauma or conflict. All of it is dealing with Mizora. It's why he's pretty normal compared to the rest of the cast.
It also doesn't help that the initial angle they were planning to go with him (fraud hero to true hero) was scrapped to make him more palatable.

EA helped shape a lot of great things about this game, but when it comes to companions, it was only a downgrade. Karlach is the result of everyone complaining the companions before she was added were all too evil and mean. While this complaint is valid, the devs took it as a sign to shape their initial Karlach idea to something more wholesome. This is why her whole character is this "cinnamon bun" trope doesn't really reflect this war hardened hero that should have very real trust issues with the party. They softened her with each EA update, from looks to personality.

We already have that with Laezel but yeah Karlach should have been less trusting of humans given that Gortash just sold her into slavery.

This is why I don't like Karlach. Everything about her character rubs me the wrong way. From her appearance with that haircut, amazon complexion and burn scars, to her pants on head moronic way of speaking. I have worked in tech for some years and just hearing Karlach's speech patterns I can imagine the person who wrote her: a 30-something millennial woman, working on her Mac from Starbucks while drinking her pumpkin latte, talking in a fake quirky way and too fast. I lost all hope for her character after she unironically said "No...just no". Everything about her character feels disingenuous and for a lack of better description feels like some feminist redditor's self insert.

She really is the least interesting character. She could've been interesting but her reactions and mannerisms are just so...out of place.

You can see clearly she was created to pander to certain audience. Her fricking fortnite zoomer dance is one of many examples of "Karlach is out of place".
Anyone here knows Stanislavski and his “I don't believe you.” ? It's very appropriate in regards to Karlach

Karlach's whole thing is gap moe, which is cute but not particularly organic a lot of the time, especially given her backstory.
The game should have had something like Garrus, a relatively normal companion thats a ride or die.

He was obviously meant to be a lying fraud, but they backpedaled to make him "the most lawful good character that does no wrong ever".

Irrc Larian got some negative feedback about Wyll, meaning that nobody gave a shit about him and they misunderstood and made him even more boring. The only things missing from making Wyll interesting.

      1) Give him conflicting thoughts about his father for disowning him without even waiting to hear his own son's explanation.
      2) Make his relationship with Mizora more personal and make it a love-hate one. (Can be done with origin Wyll).

Yeah but honestly anyone outside of Laezel and Shadowheart got shafted in some way.

They were the only two female party members for 90% of EA. Minthara was there, but you only really got a prologue to her character, since EA was just the 30% mark of act 1. Hell, a lot of things fall off after act 1. Your party members interact way less in act 2. They don't chime in nearly as much, or at all, unless its their arc specific content. EA helped Larian make sure there were a lot of content and interactions in the portions of EA players could access. This negatively affected the rest of the game's content, since most dev time was spent there.

I don't like Karlach either. The way she speaks is too modern, even compared to the kids. The preview to Karlach with the placeholder model and later unfinished version of her final design model both interacted with the party in a much more hardened way. Seriously, go look up videos of it. She's far less nice and just more "soldier-like". They specifically turned her into someone more nice because people wanted a nicer chick so bad. ...but to be fair, why did Larian decide to give us nothing but mean girls (Minthara, Lae'Zel, Shadowheart) for female party members initially to begin with? Since EA was just early act 1 content, we don't even get to see Shadowheart or Lae'Zel warm up to us, much. Lae'Zel is just a b***h in the early game and makes being nice to party NPC's hard, since she reacts negatively to everything. They went too extreme with the initial ideas, and then when fan feedback hit them hard about it, they swerved the the opposite direction to detriment of certain characters.

Karlach's whole thing is gap moe, which is cute but not particularly organic a lot of the time, especially given her backstory.

You can be gap moe without completely conflicting with a character's backstory. Karlach should have been hardened on the outside of squishy on the inside. She was just hardened in design ONLY.

She really is the least interesting character. She could've been interesting but her reactions and mannerisms are just so...out of place.

Everything about her was made to appeal to people. Her dance, her lingo, everything. She was the last designed party member.

The former two yes, but Shart? If not for her Shar's preacher background and cynicism she might as well be called Sweetheart.

Did you play EA? 50% of EA before they extended it a bit more was just early Shadowheart, where you couldn't raise her affinity past like 30% without an exploit. This means her responses were always the one's with her defenses up, most of the time sounding b***hy. We're referring to what players saw during EA.

You know what, I agree. Karlach is out of place. She literally is the redditor character, she has quips likes to curse a lot and does the shuffle dance.

I don't know how anyone can think she properly fits the setting.

Her story is even the most far removed from the main one. Lae'Zel's very existence is directly involved with the Gith's own involvement in the story. Shadowheart held the secret weapon and whole arc in act 2 was related to act 2's main boss. Wyll and his demon b***h, even with the change to their story, still had connection to Baldur's gate's characters. Astarion and Gale are a bit more removed, but they have characters who show up for their story throughout act 1 and 2, and 3. Karlach really doesn't. Part of her story is mixed in with Mizora and Wyll's.

Like others have said, she was the last to be added. Minthara, Halsin, and granny were all made to be specifically optional. While all your party members technically are, it's hard to fail at getting them. Karlach is in the same but, but came as a reaction to fans. The devs already had a pretty clear idea what the main party would be, hence five in all the promo and loading screen arts.
