The problem is that they don't have any talent and are filled with a bunch of dumbfricks, so gamepass never took off like they thought it would + making AAA games takes a frickton of money and time, who fricking knew. They bought Activision because of the sexual allegations making them cheap as balls. Literally a 50% discount to own King and CoD, who wouldn't gun for it? Microsoft knew they could never win. Now their only option is to just go third-party and continue on like how Activision was doing in the past 3 decades and try to become the world's largest third-party game developer/publisher instead.

They started that deal when Xbox consoles still sold and even outsold PS5 in the US for 3 consecutive quarters (Nadella even went on the news and bragged about them outselling Sony) and they thought it was because they had a desirable product when in reality Playstation got fricked by the shortages and those that couldn't find one turned to Xbox. Then Sony sorted their shit out and outsold them 3 to 1 in 2023. They know they won't reach 40 million consoles sold (Xbox One shipped 58M), and PS5 is expected to sell another 120M+ generation
They were always planning on going third-party, that's the only reason why gamepass even exists. The problem is that they don't have any talent and are filled with a bunch of dumbfricks, so gamepass never took off like they thought it would + making AAA games takes a frickton of money and time, who fricking knew. They bought Activision because of the sexual allegations making them cheap as balls. Literally a 50% discount to own King and CoD, who wouldn't gun for it? Microsoft knew they could never win. Now their only option is to just go third-party and continue on like how Activision was doing in the past 3 decades and try to become the world's largest third-party game developer/publisher instead.
I imagine it's been on the table for a while and the current state made them just give up because the acquisition news didn't do anything and the Series S/X got outsold by the Switch this holiday season and GamePass has the least amount of users of all the sub services despite also being on PC.
Also Xbox now has the attention of the higher ups because it makes more money than Windows. But if they stop releasing games on Switch and Playstation, then they will lose a lot of money and the higher ups do NOT want that line going down so the only course of action is to release more games as multiplats instead. try emulating first because it's free. if emulation doesn't work well, get a modded 360, ideally a trinity or jasper. revisions before jasper aren't reliable, and revisions after trinity have minor game compatibility issues.
