Most people getting PS5s are doing so because it's the upgrade for their PS4, which is where most of their game accounts and library are.
It's not a situation where they're weighing the different consoles and platforms and making a choice between the pros and cons in a vacuum anymore. For anyone who primarily gamed on a PS4, they're upgrading to the PS5 by default. And, short of a $1000 price tag, they will upgrade to the PS6 by default too. It's not even a decision at this point

I don't think that if GoW Ragnarok was on PC that you'd be seeing the PS5 sales slowing down because most of those sales you see are just PS4 owners upgrading, like iPhone users upgrade. The whole point here is that Sony would rather PC gaming not exist either and all gamers be on Playstation, so they're trying to pull people over from PC to PS5 (they would like the PS5 LTD sales to be over that of the PS4 with the numbers they peel off from PC).

Android phones are sold at a premium because hardware manufacturers don't make money otherwise. Apple takes advantage of that (lack) of competition and just matches them to make money on both hardware and software.

All of those are sold at a premium. They're just cheap to make so the 15-30% premium doesn't add much to the overall price. Which leads to less performance. You really can't beat subsidizing hardware with software for cost/performance.

The idea was that all Sony devices would use the cell architecture and form a computing network in every home, basically IoT before IoT. It didn't work and they were left with an albatross of an SoC.

That is true the cell processor was to hard to program for so it got lower performance, but they also pussied out by not trying again. They patched out linux support and made the ps4 strictly an amd x86 gaming machine, no mention of it being the next leap in computing or whatever that Ken Kutaragi would brag about. They were losing in tvs and cameras and decided to play it safe for the good of the company.

You have to remember that making their own SoC to launch ALL of their consumer electronics on a single platform requires a ton of investment. They basically had to fund the entire manufacturing pipeline for the Cell and believed PS3 would sell like 200M units. It destroyed them financially.
World would be better if they managed to essentially bring Linux to every home with PS being a mini-home server for everyone, but it wasn't meant to be. I don't think trying again would have worked. Linux users also kind of stabbed them in the back by pirating everything.

It's not new information -- MS has been pretty clear that they're exiting the traditional "razor and blades" hardware business and focusing on Game Pass, which in turn they naturally want to bring to every conceivable platform. This does mean they are effectively killing off the Xbox as a console proper. They'll almost certainly keep producing Xbox devices, almost like a vestigal "heritage" product, but it'd be a set-top box for Game Pass... which it already is, essentially. there is a parallel to what WOTC (makers of D&D) did last year when the decided to change their licence agreement that had stood the test of time and third party developers relied on to make products. The proposed changed caused a huge shitstorm, to the effect that WOTC rapidly changed their mind and tried to assure the third party devs it would be business as usual. But the fact it happened at all caused the third parties to essentially abandon WOTC, developing new licences outside of WOTC control and publish compatible products. So, in the end, it really does not matter what damage control Microsoft decides to do, people are going to look at the turmoil in the games industry and Microsoft being a known evil entity and no give them the benefit of the doubt, and abandon Xbox. Its essentially already dead.

Obviously nothing's going to happen NOW, but has anyone thought about what might happen to digital games purchased on an xbox in, say, 10-15 years? If this is truly "it" for Xbox consoles, that is; Microsoft isn't going to be running Xbox Live forever if Xbox is done, and I don't entirely know what that means for games bought online.

Like, I bought a PS4 for Bloodborne and P5 a long time ago. Most people getting PS5s are doing so because it's the upgrade for their PS4, which is where most of their game accounts and library are.
It's not a situation where they're weighing the different consoles and platforms and making a choice between the pros and cons in a vacuum anymore. For anyone who primarily gamed on a PS4, they're upgrading to the PS5 by default. And, short of a $1000 price tag, they will upgrade to the PS6 by default too. It's not even a decision at this point

I don't think that if GoW Ragnarok was on PC that you'd be seeing the PS5 sales slowing down because most of those sales you see are just PS4 owners upgrading, like iPhone users upgrade. The whole point here is that Sony would rather PC gaming not exist either and all gamers be on Playstation, so they're trying to pull people over from PC to PS5 (they would like the PS5 LTD sales to be over that of the PS4 with the numbers they peel off from PC).

If it had your steam library and could play xbox games with the simplicity of a console it would be worth the extra money. Also it would allow for 3rd parties like samsung, amazon and and others to make their own "xbox". MS has been long jealous of android and this is their opportunity to become android of consoles. There would be cheap "xboxs" and pricier ones. It would put sony on the defensive for the first time.

Android phones are sold at a premium because hardware manufacturers don't make money otherwise. Apple takes advantage of that (lack) of competition and just matches them to make money on both hardware and software.

I think it'd slow down if it was too close to original release but not collapse or anything. Xbox was just in a precarious position already before slowing down hardware with simultaneous PC releases. Sony will keep releasing PC games later to double dip while making sure their console releases remain the focus.

All of those are sold at a premium. They're just cheap to make so the 15-30% premium doesn't add much to the overall price. Which leads to less performance. You really can't beat subsidizing hardware with software for cost/performance.

MS owns the pc desktop space with the same open strategy. It works for them and they prefer it to selling hardware.
People still seethe over the ps3 to this day I guess. But look up why xbox exists MS made a whole documentary about how it came to be and Bill Gates being nervous about sony was the big reason why. Xbox won that battle sony backed off after the ps3 got real competition for the 360.

I know Gates shit his pants, but the reason Sony changed course was because the cell processor was shit. The idea was that all Sony devices would use the cell architecture and form a computing network in every home, basically IoT before IoT. It didn't work and they were left with an albatross of an SoC.
That is true the cell processor was to hard to program for so it got lower performance, but they also pussied out by not trying again. They patched out linux support and made the ps4 strictly an amd x86 gaming machine, no mention of it being the next leap in computing or whatever that Ken Kutaragi would brag about. They were losing in tvs and cameras and decided to play it safe for the good of the company.
You have to remember that making their own SoC to launch ALL of their consumer electronics on a single platform requires a ton of investment. They basically had to fund the entire manufacturing pipeline for the Cell and believed PS3 would sell like 200M units. It destroyed them financially.
World would be better if they managed to essentially bring Linux to every home with PS being a mini-home server for everyone, but it wasn't meant to be. I don't think trying again would have worked. Linux users also kind of stabbed them in the back by pirating everything.

I don't understand people who are 'fans' of consoles. Games, sure. Even companies that make them. But being a fan of Xbox specifically? That's far too consumerist for me. Consoles used to court different devs and audiences, so you'd go to one system or the other because you liked the ecosystem they had created with their exclusives. You'd be a Nintendo fan because you liked the sort of games Nintendo allowed on their system. It's just a more abstracted version of being the fan of a developer.
It's less relevant now because practically everything is cross platform, so it's rather like people bickering over whose county is better long after mass media and the internet has destroyed the cultural differences between the two.

It's not new information -- MS has been pretty clear that they're exiting the traditional "razor and blades" hardware business and focusing on Game Pass, which in turn they naturally want to bring to every conceivable platform. This does mean they are effectively killing off the Xbox as a console proper. They'll almost certainly keep producing Xbox devices, almost like a vestigal "heritage" product, but it'd be a set-top box for Game Pass... which it already is, essentially. I'm confused by the reaction. Pretty sure you can find lots of commentary describing the above on Youtube going back 1+ years.

there is a parallel to what WOTC (makers of D&D) did last year when the decided to change their licence agreement that had stood the test of time and third party developers relied on to make products. The proposed changed caused a huge shitstorm, to the effect that WOTC rapidly changed their mind and tried to assure the third party devs it would be business as usual. But the fact it happened at all caused the third parties to essentially abandon WOTC, developing new licences outside of WOTC control and publish compatible products. So, in the end, it really does not matter what damage control Microsoft decides to do, people are going to look at the turmoil in the games industry and Microsoft being a known evil entity and no give them the benefit of the doubt, and abandon Xbox. Its essentially already dead.

Despite keeping a very close eye on the console gens, I whole heartedly cannot see a reason to buy either. Even if I want to play BB, that is a single game and not worth justifying an entire console. There has not been a SINGLE game on Xbox's roster that I couldn't play on PC. Skate 4 is pretty much vaporware and it was unironically the only game I'd want to play on a console (couch + TV). Even the Xbox classics like Forza and Halo are shittier than ever despite having the most money and time pumped into them. What a fricking day
