Why did they make an ugly terrible port on the graphically inferior PS2 when this could have looked beautiful on the Xbox?
Was it just Japanese nepotism?

Crazy how OG Xbox had 0 RE games. At least they got the best survival horror game from that gen, Fatal Frame
>Crazy how OG Xbox had 0 RE games
and yet it somehow has dino crisis 3...one of the worst modern games ever made
It got Genma Onimusha as an exclusive though.
cash money
Thats not what nepotism means dipshit. Game was money and any version of it regardless of quality sold gangbusters. Xbox sucked and no one in japan owned one, there would be no point.
America has a trillion times larger population than Japan dipshit. Your argument is moronic.
>America has a trillion times larger population than Japan dipshit. Your argument is moronic.
Xbox only sold like 20 million units.
The point in porting RE4 to PS2 was so that it could make the money it wasn't making on GCN. Putting effort into an Xbox port, when MS was ditching the original Xbox at that time, would be a waste of resources.
Unlike modern day, back then jp devs made games for japan first and the rest of the world later, so they couldn't have given two shits about however much Xbox sold anywhere but japan.
The village sections are, to put it lightly, massively downgraded on PS2, but the rest of the game is very competitive with the GameCube version. I really hate the idea that the game was somehow butchered on PS2
They wanted it to sell more copies than it did on GC, not less
It looks like shit on PS2
Xbox players probably would've bought more copies than Gamecube players did.
LMFAO the village portion was the only part of the game worth playing
The sound quality is the only real downgrade
If only you knew how bad things really are.
It was much worse on pc.
Because they had a meeting with Mikami and totally blew it.
Why are Japs so fricking OCD holy shit how do they not kill themselves. If Capcom were American then each company's envoy would just be some chill dude and they'd talk about this shit over some pizza and beer. If they see something then they see something and if they don't they don't, there don't need to be these fricking rituals
To be fair, he made his point perfectly clear and showed Microsoft "you have nothing to offer to me", which was a perfectly fine conclusion, since the OG Xbox was a failure. The X360 did a lot better and thus had access to Resident Evil
They just didn't have enough money to throw at Mikami and his staff personally. The "philosophy" part being the highlight is such bullshit.
Yeah it's kind of shitty that wasn't conveyed, Microsoft explicitly sold the Xbox to developers on the premise of
>your creative vision won't be limited by weak hardware, convoluted tools, or sparse documentation
And to their credit, most developers who tried absolutely preferred the Xbox over the PS2 for development.
Seamus Blackley talked about it before that it was a meeting the main Xbox management executives couldn't get to because they were busy in the US. They were hoping the regional team in Japan could handle an initial meeting and follow up with the Xbox exec team when they next went to Japan. Blackley said he knew how bad it would go, he would have gone to that meeting.
You are aware that the game is known worldwide thanks to the PS2 version!
Gamecube only failed in America
Blatantly false. Gamecube only did as well as it did because of the US.
>US sales - 12.94 million
>Japanese sales - 4.04 million
>Everywhere else - 4.77 million
The PS2 port came out about a month before the Xbox 360 launched. Even Microsoft didn't care about supporting the OG Xbox at that point.
It's much easier to make a downgraded port than an upgraded one, and everyone complaining that Resident Evil 4 was stuck on Gamecube owned a PS2. Capcom has always followed the money and always will.
Xbox had no audience in Japan and it was basically at EOL by the time the PS2 port came out. It would've been more likely for them to have ported it to 360 earlier which they eventually did but not in a physical release format.
PS2 units sold : 160 million
Xbox units sold : 25 million
It's just basic math.
>PS2 units sold : 160 million
the best selling ps2 game didn't even hit 20% of its install base
it was a cheapo dvd player
Doesn't matter. What matters is when a developer is looking where to port a game, the obvious choice is the platform with five times as many units in circulation. Those numbers are even more heavily skewed in Japan. I'm not saying an xbox port couldn't have been awesome, just why it wasn't done is easy to understand.
>the best selling ps2 game didn't even hit 20% of its install base
yes it did, you forgot to count that 60 million residen evil piracy copies were sold
you could make a case for that if there weren't 10 million video games on PS2
That's why the install base is spread out, not because people only used it as a dvd player
>PS2 units sold : 160 million
So that makes about 80 millions people who bought PS2s
>160 million
People really taking Jimbo's word for it? Dude answered in a way that made it clear he didn't actually know and was just spitballing
Even if it was only 100 million that's still 4 times as many units in circulation.
I don't see why not. There's a number trail, it's not like what Nintendo does with "game boy sales."
Funny by the early 2010s i never saw any PS2s in stores anymore.
I used to work at Wal-Mart and we had PS2s on the shelf until I left in 2018. Always saw that GTA 3/VC 2 pack too.
is this some weird shrine some hyper dedicated ps2 fan made? Whats with people 3d printing stuff and not taking 20 minutes to sand print lines? that looks like trash. sanding your parts is easier than the work it takes to calibrate and properly print the part. what the frick is wrong with people? stupidity.
RE4 should've been an Xbox exclusive, with a PS2 and PC port developed in-house by Capcom at a later date. Why Mikami chose the Gamecube, a console primarily marketed for children and families, as the main home for an 18+ survival horror franchise I will never know. The saddest thing is that Capcom did make an Xbox exclusive game, and it was SLOP like Dino Crisis 3.
They made an agreement with Nintendo to make RE games for the Gamecube. So there was money in it for them either way.
Steel Batallion wants to have a talk to you.
You really expected him to make a game in a series that is very popular in Japan exclusively for a console almost no one in Japan owned? You can't really be this clueless... can you?
Resident Evil is more popular in the west than it is in Japan, and if they gave the greenlight to fricking Dino Crisis 3 they could have done so for RE4. Even a port of REmake would've been a smarter idea.
Yeah but it's still big there and the Xbox sold like absolute shit in that country. This is essentially the same as you being confused and upset not understanding why RE 1 and 2 weren't ported to the Jaguar. It's a little funny.
>Comparing Xbox to the Jaguar
moron moment.
xbox also had its own exclusive version of onimusha
The game has like a million ports and it can be played on fricking anything these days, why are Xbox drones still butthurt about not getting a port 19 years ago?
This D esu, the remake plays best on Xbox series nowadays conpared to other consoles, and the Switch can't even play the original smoothly (for no reason btw, it's just a shit port)
Every time RE4 gets a port, something new is broken
GC –> Wii — Lower polygon count inventory items from PS2 port
GC –> Wii –> Xbox 360 — Broken and missing effects, bad mapping conversion for ALL the models of the game, missing sound reverb effect.
GC –> Wii –> Xbox 360 –> UHD — Animation and sound issues, black pickup screen, bad optimization with lots of performance issues in some computers
The PS4 version is just copy-paste of the “HD textures option” from PC Ultimate HD. Only a few extra character textures were improved for PS4/Xone.
Also some enemies behavior issues if I’m not mistaken. But I’m not sure in which port…
Still aside of resolution the GC/Wii and UHD with HD Project are the best versions. It has the best color palette and lightning and have bloom to the fire effects.
Resident Evil 4 HD Project removes terrible looking PS2 version assets.

>WEAPONS and other item MODELS: The models used for all post-Gamecube versions have less polygons than the original Gamecube version. It seems they kept (perhaps by accident?) the low-poly versions from the PS2 port of the game. I restored and even improved all of these models. There is a limitation with these models that crashes the game if the file size of certain files are larger than the original, but I found that there is some dispensable data that can be removed from the .bin files (the 3D models), and even entire .bin files that are unused in-game
All of these are inconsequential issues barely noticeable by anyone but turbo autists. Meanwhile, every consequent version is superior to the original just by virtue of having Separate Ways, the PRL unlockable, and better graphics in case of the UHD versions.
Talking about the stock btw, don't give a shit about your autismo 50GB mod to make the floor tiles look better or whatever.
The PRL existing makes the game worse, the rest is good though.
>he doesn't like fun joke weapons that completely break the balance of the game as a reward for mastering the game by beating it on the hardest difficulty
Boring homosexual
You have nothing to work towards anymore in the postgame of versions featuring the PRL, because you just get a free gun that eclipses literally everything and doesn't even need to aim, it's non-gameplay. What's the point of trying to get the Handcannon and maxing it out when this piece of shit is in the game?
The Wii version was considerably blurrier than the PS2 too since it wasn't native 16:9. But it had the gamecube effects.
>ugly terrible port
Wrong
>could have looked beautiful on the Xbox?
Wrong again. Just check the PC version
I can't put my finger on what it is about the gamecube version that feels better, but I see the difference. Also seems like they tweaked the difficulty of the room with the addition of the two crossbow lackeys in the PS2 version.
resident evil 4
a horse with no name
There were a lot more PS2 owners out there than Xbox or Gamecube owners.
An Xbox port would have been nice, It probably would got some new content too.
RE4 was never good.
