Their plan could be to use money from other departments too and then use the IPs to make GTA and RDR movies or TV shows. After Sony started making shows like TLoU and putting them on HBO, it's not out of the question for Sony to start wanting to purchase big IPs to make them into multimedia franchises. I think it goes without saying that a GTA HBO series would be absurdly popular if they don't frick it up, same with RDR. Microsoft tried with Halo and it didn't work well because they made Master Chief into a cuck but Nintendo had ridiculous success with the Mario movie, so I really think it's not out of the question that Sony does start allocating more budget into buying gigantic gaming IPs after Microsoft's acquisition goes through.
People focus too much on the game side of things, Sony has anime studios and a lot of hollywood studios under their belt too. Better Call Saul was produced by Sony Pictures as an example.

Sony is clearly prepping for something big if they're considering stuff like this. They just purchased another movie company earlier this month an made it part of Aniplex so they can do more live action films for a global audience.
They've had success with letting TLOU become one of HBO's major shows and they're pretty much making all their future IPs be something that can work in other media formats.
They've already entered a partnership with Kadokawa to develop the Sekiro series and make it part of PlayStation Productions so a similar deal like from Take 2 to turn GTA into something like a new Fast and the Furious series so they could leverage their business partnership and prevent a microsoft buyout.
