They could look as pretty as they want but they're still an absolute chore to explore due to the aforementioned field skill system and the fact certain areas like Mor Ardain were swarming with high level monsters that had near unavoidable aggro ranges.
XB2 gives you the illusion of complete freedom when you're levelgated from certain zones and even if you're allowed to get somewhere there's not much to actually do.

The environments in XB3 were terrible and forgettable and while playing through them you don’t understand where you are in relation to the world. In XB1 and XB2 you understood things like “I’m on the back of a giant robot” or “I’m in the mouth of a giant sea creature”. The environments in XB3 were like “I’m somewhere in a canyon in a giant donut shaped land mass and I can’t see anything around me”. Really made the game a slog going from settlement to settlement, very forgettable

There's at least one more update to the game coming in the future to support the Noah and Mio amiibos, and assumming the Switch 2 has BC I can imagineit being tied to a performance patch or something like that.
I played like half of XC3. The world is a lot more boring than 2 (and 1), it gets better a bit deeper in but the intro is especially terrible as it starts off with an incredibly uninspired area that's basically barren rock + a small amount of grass and it blocks your exploration significantly until your progress the story some more. It then leads into a desert, which is frankly not much better than the rocky place and the game overall has a problem with spamming wide, frickhuge spaces which are a chore to explore on foot, while at the same time not giving you any option for faster movement (at least as far as I played). The world design also feels like it's at odds with what the story is telling you, like there's this unending war supposed to be going on but out in the field you find 99% wild monsters and once every blue moon a group of 3 soldier dudes or something. It feels like very little effort was spent into making this "war" feel real in terms of world design and game mechanics. It's barely anything more than a story backdrop.
The main party characters also feel quite bland and overall uninteresting since they all share the same background of being variously traumatized child soldiers, which fits the setting or whatever but at the same time makes them a lot less interesting than the individualized characters that both XC1 and XC2 have.
The straw that broke the camel's back for me was how the game punishes you for playing it. I had the audacity to go out and do some sidequests and to explore beyond bull-rushing the main story, which ended up overleveling me. When I was done with the sidequests and went back, I immediately noticed that the game had completely disabled class unlocks for new heroes I encountered. This basically means it just fricking turned the only significant progression system off. It got so fricking boring I just stopped playing.
May as well emulate it if that's your only hold-up.

yes I hated the (like 5) loading corridors in the game (and to be fair 2 was a bunch of titans) but once inside an area 3 does feel more open. The last area of 2 (city+tree) was a corridor fest too and while in 3 Origin was also a corridor fest, at least it was smaller and had Erythia Sea right before to compensate.
That said X mogs both of them hard. I couldnt help but actively wish the movement was more like X during both games' playthroughs

Black Sheep in the series is Xenoblade X. At least Xenoblade 2 is successful enough to have continue to getting merch and content support for it even after the game been release for more than five years. While, also still increasing in sales and gaining more fans. Been a while since i played XBC2, but playing 3 and for most of the game it felt like combat revolved entirely around two things; chain attacks and later lucky seven. Outside of those two things it never felt like I was doing any damage to non-normal enemies. This made the combat get kinda boring for me. I know XBC2 had chain attacks as well but I don't remember them being the end-all to combat. Doesn't help that doing a chain attack makes that annoying theme play that prevents any of the battle music from being memorable.
XC2 rode off the Switch's launch hype and Smash Bros advertising.
99.9% of all games ever made have failed to sell even a million units. So yeah, Xenoblade is absolutely a "breakout hit".

Currently playing through Xenoblade DE and I'll have to ask why do you guys praise this game so much. Sure, the scenery is beautiful and the history has its moments, but the world is wasted with emptiness and no rewards for exploration (except encountering high level enemies), and the sidequests are just awful. I'm almost forcing myself to complete the game, because nothing interesting almost never happens.

That's most of it for the majority of people. One of, if not the most important thing in these games is the world you see and journey through.
When people say the exploration in 1 is good, they mean that it rewards you with nice looking areas for exploring. As you said, there isn't a reward for reaching an area 9 times out of 10 since there's no regular treasure chests (there are a few in very specific maps but the amount of chests is probably less than 10). If you aren't interested in doing the side quests which will require you to scour the map of each area, there's no other reason to explore besides wanting to go somewhere.

Does Xenoblade writing sucks as much as Xenogears? I played that game from hearing endlessly online about how it had deep storytelling, just to find instead one of the most boring and cringe inducing writings I have ever seen in a video game.

I refuse to give XBC3 a chance after how abysmally horrible 2 was, but I've heard that the writing is on par or marginally worse than XBC1s.

i put about 20 hours into the game waiting for it to get good or for something interesting to happen. instead it was nothing but trash, and constant "beat them in the fight but they utterly dominate you in the cutscene" boss encounters.
also fun fact, I didn't even get to the point of the game where the couple of most used cringe WEBMs from the game like where the two sword chicks are dancing come from.
I'd bring up the game on my Switch profile so you can see the actual hours played, but that would require me to reinstall the game and I'm not going to download a 14g game just to prove a point on Ganker.

How would an action RPG/adventure play? Would you have a party. When I think of action RPG I think of Secret of Mana. Xenoblade 2's and 3's button arts could work. For a top-down 2D game you can have multiple weapons. I say top-down 2D game because I want to see Xenogears' 3D backgrounds and 2D sprites again.
