Xenoblade 2 Combat

Do people seriously? I’m about 15 hours in and so far, compared to the first game, the battle system is different but by no means difficult to understand at all.

It's not even hard to understand. It's just a lot to take in. I understood it perfectly after reading a Gamefaqs document.

      >Do people seriously?
They really do. It's a wonderful combat system that rewards you for doing things correctly at each step through it- literally a virtuous cycle where correct actions turn into hyper damage at each step.

But people somehow get completely tripped up by it, I don't even understand why or how, it's crazy.

You're given a full chapter to play around with each mechanic after they teach it to you before anything new gets introduced, I really can't understand it being "a lot to take in." They don't even give you a full complement of Blades until chapter3.

its totally understandable. The combat system is good because it gives so many options you cant take advantage of all of them. This is overwhelming, and there is no disputing that. I dont think it myself but there could be a legit criticisim of the system because you have to choose between going for driver combos, blade combos, chain attacks, going for elemental weaknesses, or prioritizing efficiency allowing full auto attack combos then canceling the last one with an art. Functionally chain attacks after 2-3 blade combos give you an insta win so this is the "best" way to play but then you have to ignore other mechanics to be most efficient at it so meh. There are legit reasons to think of xc2 combat as both brilliant and a mess at the same time.

That doesn't help anything because that system is just overdeveloped bloat that serves no real purpose outside of 1-2 optional post game encounters.

Compare that to the seal system of XB1
Enemy has sealable skill = use the seal ability.

In XB2 it expects you to memorize this whole list of combo's as well as know ahead of time what skill the boss will use so you can then seal that very specific mechanic.... I don't know how that whole system even made it into the game.

                >It's a moronic system
It's an incredibly elegant system that builds off itself literally every step through. It's unironically wonderful, easy to learn and opens itself up to increasing depth as you go on- realising that you should only have to autoattack a maximum of 3x on any given fight (and even doing 3 autoattacks is just minmaxing).

                >you need to setup the right pokemons to do the combos in that picture.
You get elemental blades super easily and all your party has default Blades across different elemental attacks, plus Pyra and Mythra give you both Light and Fire, and Pneuma is whatever you want her to be.

Of the 8 Elements the only time you're really tossing them up is choosing if you want to have all 8 covered for slightly easier Full Burst, or if you'll only cover 7.

I think you guys are misunderstanding.
We aren't talking about the elemental combo's and orbs being pointless. We are talking about the sealing mechanic attached to it that serves no purpose outside of 2 encounters.

If you disagree I'm convinced you didn't play the game.

is about the combo system in XB2 because

says that it serves no purpose outside of some post game encounters. The pay off is obliterating bosses. It's useful because it obliterates bosses. Does that make sense? The pay off is killing a boss before it kills you.

On one hand, I get it. Being able to pump up the DPS numbers huge to make bosses trivial is cool and all.
On the other hand, for most players it won't even matter, especially those doing it on a first time playthrough that just want to do the story. Hell, most people go through it without knowing about Art Canceling, especially timing it with the final hit of an auto-attack.
I grasped the whole systems early on, because I screenshotted/organized all the tutorials for myself. But in the end, I honestly preferred Xenoblade 1's system. But Torna's was a huge step up and more engaging than 2's
Just too me, I think Xenoblade 2 had too much shit thrown together for the sake of being fully "customizable".

I don't recall which fights specifically but they were like the hardest post game optional bosses.

Nothing in the actual game is hard enough to justify doing really anything outside of spamming buttons unless you are severely under level'd

It's a moronic system with a high barrier of entry because you need to setup the right pokemons to do the combos in that picture. Once you got it you just need to repeat it 1m times because it works the same on every monster. The devs know it's a bad system.

I've never played a xenoblade game before but this webm convinced me so I started with X a few days ago and it's been kino so far. Combat is fun, everythings customizable and the sense of scale is really well done and makes the payoff of getting your giant mech that much better 20 hours later.
My question is do any other games in the series have combat, free roaming, driving and flight with a mech? I've heard conflicting things. Why the frick would they remove the feature? I wont touch the other games if it's just a generic jrpg

      Anonymous

No, X is really unique in the series. No other Xeno game has its level of free roam exploration and character movement. Xenogears is the only other game you can actually walk around as a mech outside of combat but its controls fricking suck ass, especially whenever you need to jump. Every Xeno game features mechs, but X is the only blade game where you can actively use them in gameplay, and is the only truly open world Xeno game.

        >o any other games in the series have combat, free roaming, driving and flight with a mech?
Nope. The other Xenoblade games are just generic jrpgs.

No because Botw poached xenoblade open world designer.

That sucks, I would have liked to play a sequel to X just with better graphics. The face models are pretty shit, even for 2015. The world and literally everything else still looks great though on emulator, I'll just stick with this game then.
It's odd that they made such a great game and then went back to generic jrpg shit that looks identical to half a dozen other titles. If this game released on PC I think it would have done a lot better

I agree. Xenoblade 2 and 3 are a step down from X. X had completely seamless world, flight, a run button, cool armor sets, melee and ranged weapons that you can choose to change up your character.

2 and 3 don't even have a run button. I have no hype for 3, not getting it any time soon.

Merc missions were a cute idea but the issue is you actually lose access to the blade.
You like this blade the most, so you want to upgrade it, which means you can't use it, which means uuuugh.
Also the skill checks in 2 were shit. Count my entire blade collection for puzzles, or at least just add up my highest X amount. Having to swap to a blade solely because they have a "jump" skill was ass.

The Golden Sun comment cracked me up, because that's Camelot's game and they'd rather be making Mario Sports games. Monolith Soft not making Xenoblade 3 isn't going to result in the development of a new yummy wummy golden sun. Fire Emblem is lucky that Nintendo now uses Koei Tecmo to make their new FE games, otherwise we wouldn't have had a new FE game since Fates. Even that supposed leaked FE game is just another KT product using their Gust studio.

    >Fusion Combos, performing a Driver Combo within a single stage of a Blade Combo to extend it or vice versa with all 3 specials prepped (ZL, ZR, A)
That's also not really explained well, and the damage benefits really expedite the pace of battles, especially the DoT ones.

already beat it too many times, I don't know if I have it in me to beat it again just yet, I was actually doing stuff like getting all Blades to S rank before going to NG+ but got burned out after doing the Challenge Battle related affinity charts

    >hit enemy to charge arts
    >use arts to charge specials
    >use specials to do bigger damage
    >finish special combo to increase chain attack strength
That’s how to play Xenoblade 2 without ever looking at a blade’s skill trees.

X is by far the best in the blade series but it has some pretty shitty writing along with the game not actually being finished. The open world exploration is really a lot of fun when you unlock flying.

no, the world in blade 2 is considerably chopped down and reduced into a mostly linear flat experience. even the level design in 1 was way larger on the wii. monolith is fricked working on shit hardware. their games sell regardless so it's not like nintendo fans actually care about the quality of the series.

This. XB2 and XB3 I would dare say are almost as linear as FFXIII except they have large empty spaces to give the illusion of an open world a la BOTW and Pokemon Legends

Switch is more powerful than the Wii U, it should be able to handle X just fine. The problem is the engine for X was built specifically for the Wii U, and for every game Monolithsoft have made for Switch they built a new engine (one that isn't very good, but has been improving for each subsequent game on the system)

        Anonymous

It would. It's more powerful than the Wii U. The problem is that Monolith fell for the modern tech meme on shit hardware which is why 2 and 3 look like shit. Things like volumetric clouds and fog, 3d models on LODs, dynamic lights and shadows on environments mean a huge sacrifice to visual quality when your hardware can handle it. 1 and X use pre-baked lighting, painted shadows on textures, impostor 2D models on LODs, 2D painted skyboxes, 2d fog layers which made all the environments a lot nicer to look at on weaker hardware.

Yup. Every battle in Xenoblade 2 is just you as a player playing solitaire.

You do your set ups and then your executions and then the boss is dead. Xenoblade 1 was similar in a lot of ways but at least it had its monado mechanics which added in some gameplay reactions... though they didn't implement nearly enough as they should have.

If you actually knew how the game is handling field skills instead of getting info from doomposters it seems like they are tied to heroes but you strengthen them through doing quests. It’s a mix of 1 where you would do quests to access some new areas (colony 6 dynamite, makna ruins, agniritha, high entia emblem) and 2 where field skills usually made your characters interact with the environment to open up areas (burn something in the way, dive into water, create an ice bridge, dig something out of the ground).

I'm mostly just not wanting to shit about in menus to meet field skill checks and the anon seemed to be leading me on to that being the case. Is it not?

                Anonymous

We don’t know, because the game isn’t out yet. All we know is that field skills are tied to heroes and their quests. Getting heroes is not random, it seems to be tied to story progress and probably development/affinity of the various towns. Considering that Torna made it so field skills were all strengthened through playing the game naturally and you didn’t need to go into the menu to organize the skills, I wouldn’t be surprised if I’m 3 you just get a key item or there’s a small cutscene that shows the hero training the party in the skill.

2’s equipment comes through blades and their core chips, with accessories and aux cores being the gems of that game. Fighting enemies will generally only give equipment around that level, a little bit higher if the enemy is a unique monster. There are 3 tiers to every accessory so you can farm for the strongest version of it, but that’s usually something you do in post game. If you actually want stuff earlier than it can drop from enemies you need to explore the world to find tough to get chests.

You don't understand that by virtue of being a game for the Nintendo Switch, this game had a playerbase of the most unbelievably moronic, infantile and mentally ill people that happen to play video games. The game explains to you step by step after leaving you with hours to practice until it teaches you the next mechanic, but this really didn't matter if your audience is so bad that they deliberately refuse to read the instructions on the screen.

I get that x2gays love the combat but don't you think it's a little too grindy and confusing if you want to do anything beyond the story?

    >grind cores for RNG blades but then you have to grind affinity after that but then you have to grind cores/accessories after that but then you have to watch a 3hr video to get the combat down because the game doesn't tell you shit beyond the absolute basics and then you have to watch multiple videos AFTER that to know esoteric shit like how certain weapon types are dogshit on characters and godly on others or whether or not a blade is worth using. Also you need to grind weapon arts and levels if you didn't max those out while doing the dozens of hours of grinding for the earlier shit.

      Anonymous

Grinding cores is trivial and very fast with the right setup. Yeah it means you have to think up of a strategy specifically for that grind but that is part of the appeal.

Affinity charts are also not very much a grind, just use merc missions.
For the WP grind, NG+ has you covered.

I will agree on S+ trust being a pain in the ass even with the DLC love sources.

And you really don't need S+ trust for much of anything really.

Wut? Grindy? Xenoblade 2 is one of the least grindy RPGs out there unless you are playing Pokemon. And even then Pokemon is insanely grindy if you are hunting shinies.

      Anonymous

I wouldn't say confusing, but moreso annoying, just because it wants to have so many little things to manage for the sake of managing.
Personally, I have no idea what to expect with XB3, going into it mostly blind, and I did enjoy all the Xenoblades so far. But I've always liked Xenoblade 1 the most for it being the "simplest" of them, and having a small core cast of characters.

      >get to level 99
      >get that farm monster to max level
      >use him to grind for rare cores

Yeah I don't get it either, what with the way the game drip feeds you information over time. If anything I think it takes TOO long to introduce all of the mechanics.
The only JRPG I needed a guide for was Xenosaga EpII, which was also a really fun battle system in my opinion. And, just like Xenoblade 2, people bash it because they got filtered. Sad!

      Anonymous

Xenosaga 2 is a perfect comparison in more ways than just the battle system
The story taking forever and focusing on irrelevant shit for the first half, the extended post game for people that actually liked it, the highest rate of lolsorandum moments in the trilogy, random changes/retcons to appeal to a wider audience, and KOS-MOS having a really shitty design.

Japanese game design philosophies are genuinely holding gaming back as a medium. It's why we're starting to prefer games like Horizon and TLOU, which actually treat its female characters with respect. Just ignore the vocal minority whining about the magical SJW boogeyman that never existed.

What the hell am I even reading?
If anything it's the movie shit that's holding gaming back. This includes both Xeno & the Horizon Zero, TLOU type of games. I ain't no ACgay but his basic argument is correct, the problem is that he's a fricking homosexual who gets angered at even little cutscenes that play during battles. Imagine him trying to play Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat where the super moves are short cutscenes.

Do people really play this over-sexualized garbage? Pyra is fricking half naked, how can anyone take that seriously?

Not everyone is from a Monotheistic Westernized sexually repressed hell hole. In Japan's Shintoism, nudity is viewed as spiritually cleansing. Even the character designer claimed that the design for Pyra was meant to show how innocent or naive she is when compared to the fully clothed Pneuma.

You gay Black folk are worse than the Right Wing Evangelist morons from the 1990s. You mothafrickas basically argue the same shit but for different reasons. Streets of Rage's Ash got censored in 90s era USA because it'd offend 90s era Right wing Religion cucks.
Ash was still censored & omitted from SOR4 because they didn't want to risk offending 2010s Left Wing homosexuals who treat their fake internet wokeism like a religion. America makes no goddamn sense to me. They have the most sexualized live action movies, music videos & even the largest porn industry, but they only police the sexual content in comic books & video games.

          Anonymous

The thing i find more sad is how even if this dude doesnt like sexualization he is only capable of seeing that when these games can explore topics and moral themes in deeper ways than the average western jrpg

It would be funny if he thinks that fallout games are the pinacle of narrative in rpgs

When the industry keeps sucking off buttholes like Neil Druckmann, are you surprised that there's an aversion to even the smaller cutscenes? When cancer spreads badly enough, sometimes you have to salt the earth, cleanse and radiate everything, then hope you can rebuild afterward. Look at what happened with microtransactions and DLC and season passes, all because we didn't nip it in the bud when it was still just cosmetic horse armor.

it has a lot of mechanics, but it also takes like 80+ hours to even get all of them so you have tons of time to get used to them unless you are a moron who tries to brute force them.

cant say I like it though. its a very railroaded combat system with very little proper decisionmaking. I think I had to use the sealing mechanic like once in the whole story.
like you tinker and optimize your big damage "rotation" and then stick to it.

I got both more variety and enjoyability from FFXV than I did XB2. There's a reason people stopped hating on the former when XB2's awfulness came plain for all to see on its release.

      How is XB2's combat railroaded?
      >Bosses can hit hard and easily kill party members
      >Therefore, I should have a special pocketed so that I can survive a killing move
      >But I need to use arts to fill up the special gauge
      >Use pouch items to expedite art cooldowns
      >start spamming arts to build up special
      >i draw aggro away from the boss and die
      >now I have to either prioritize evasion or healing with my character to avoid death
      >adjust my party's build so that they can draw aggro
      >but make sure their elements are appropriate for easy combos and chain attacks
Optimizing a party is more than just maximizing damage output. There are other factors to take into consideration.

I love, love, LOVE how none of the XB2 fanboys can muster up a SIGNLE rebuttal to this. That line on the end stings extra hard too. Monolithsoft has regressed hard.

      >I love, love, LOVE how none of the XB2 fanboys can muster up a SIGNLE rebuttal to this.
Because he doesn't explain why any of the game's mechanics are bad. And that last line is bullshit given how FF1 can be easily beaten with 2x Fighters mashing the attack command and a white mage keeping the party healthy. In Xenoblade 2, there's a lot more options since anyone can be an evasion tank, healer, DPS. Certain blades can also function as a combination of multiple classes. KOS-MOS is an attacker, yet her passives allow her to function as a decent healer. Fiora is a healer, but she can deal a lot of damage. And then there's Poppi. Combos are a good means of maximize damage as spamming arts can draw enemy aggro from your tank and onto yourself. Specials can be used to block enemy attacks etc. Negating damage is about as big as dealing damage in Xenoblade 2 whereas in FF1 fighters can literally tank and kill everything.

Xenoblade is the story about a military scientist who went too far and accidentally the entire human population, and then made various experiments in order to create a new genetic race of humanity, losing his own moral links to humanity in the process. It is told by the story of a young boy who meets a sentient nuclear powerplant and must learn that it has value beyond being a weapon of war that makes things explode good.

So in Xenoblade 1, the entire gimmick was that because you had the precog: Bosses and even random enemies could have really dangerous party wipes or one shots, which you where forced to conditionally deal with.
It didn't force you to be on your toes, but it did mean you have to do some cooldown and tension management just in case it came out of the left field.

So how is it in X and 2?

In X, the gimmick is that your entire party are robots that you can overclock to temporarily dramatically speed up art recharge
In 2, the gimmick is that you bond with artificial beings that manifest your weapons and the strength of your relationship with them directly reflects upon their abilities and also grant you various buffs in combat.

In two every time you press a button it changes the function of all of your other buttons.

can someone tell me what the frick was going on with 2's translation? From the nonsensical name changes to replacing bikini armor to fricking bunny suit? Architect instead of God? why

They replaced the localization director of 1 with some American dweeb

I unironically hate this battle system.
    It feels so fricking slow.

all the depth boils down to doing elemental attacks to stack orbs, and once you have several orbs break them with a team attack for billions.

Sounds pretty complex, bro. Very interesting. Will 3 be even more comex than that?

no clue, i've been dodging all news on it to make it feel fresh.
hopefully the mechanics are a bit better so just doing 1 thing isn't endgame

    >the average jarpig player is moronic
Who knew. The tutorials are good, the only thing the game explains badly is the blade combo tree and how to use it to seal effects

I often heard people talking how takahashi made the choice for xeno 2 to be more anime intentionally for it to be more lighthearted, is this true?
If that is true, 3 being that much darker makes sense, 2 is so anime

When does this gayme get good? Shit UI, shit controls, atrocious side quests, bunch of padding the story already. Flat downgrade from the last 2 games.

You don't like 30 hour cutscenes constantly interrupting the game? Sounds like you hate fun, my dude.

It got even worse literally seconds after this. Not sure how much more I can take.

It's not that it's difficulty, it's that 45 hours in, the game is still introducing and explaining mechanics to you.

I'm pretty sure that even without whatever is introduced "45 hours in" it already has more than 1's combat.

Combat sucks in every Xeno game other than Xenosaga 3, so that doesn't even mean anything.

I don't know if anyone ITT is emulating the game right now in Yuzu but back when I was playing it 6-8 months ago I found that setting GPU accuracy to extreme fixed all the random framedrops I was getting in towns.

I heard that worked as a speedup in the first game too. Just putting it out there if it's still relevant.

So are the DLCs going to be important to the story in XC3? I know something about Fog King from Future Connected might be relevant but I haven't played either. I've heard Golden Country is good but I donno if dropping 20 bones on it is worth it for 15-20hrs
