Of course it was.
He said so himself in interviews when it was released but it sold the most and got a Smash signal boost so it attracted a bunch of newbies that expected the series would be the same moving forward because they refused to touch any of the other games.

There is a lot to do and explore in X. It really feels like some offline mmo this time. It's like they did what they wanted to do with the XC1 mechanics. But the story was literally nothing there and the Tatsu food jokes were actually hurting me after a while. It's the best game for exploration it feels like. >XC2
2 almost doesn't feel like the other xenoblade games. It's like they experimented a lot with it. The world feels alive(literally the world is alive because titans). Music was great and the characters personality were good enough to be in your mind the entire game. Gacha shit FRICKING SUCKED. I still never got kos-mos even after grinding. Also frick that sidequest about the girl and the bear. >XC3
It feels like the most polished game from the 3 main ones. Tutorials are better, the game and the DLC are good. I think i understand why i felt empty when i completed the game. Aionios is just a depressing world. The story isn't bad and i even like mobius and Z as a concept. I think it's the only xeno game that was taking itself super serious. >XC1
Visions are a super cool game mechanic that could just be a cutscene thing, while the plot being about bionis and mechonis fighting is simple, it was a VERY strong world building and what the entire game was about. It's something that years later still is stuck in your head. Walking isn't as great as other xenoblade games, i was filtered the first time by the combat like a lot of people are. The good shit about XC1 were the plot twists! Even Zanza being kinda meh as a final boss the final plot twists with Alvis being a "computer" still was a mindfrick for me.

Most of the humor was locked to the sidequests.
I'd argue you could say the same about Xenosaga.
The sidequest in Colony 4 with Bambam and Dorin where they just cut the music is probably the funniest moment in all Xenoblade games.
Either that or Kite zooming over to Juniper.
I think it's the contrast between the overall seriousness and these comedic moments that really elevates them. XC1 didn't have the same effect somehow.

I liked them all for various reasons, and there's cons for each one. This series is such a blessing for JRPG enjoyers.
