I'm playing X for the first time and so far it's been the worst of the 3 on pretty much every aspect. Gameplay, soundtrack, characters, story. You name it. I just unlocked the 10 fricking quests or so to get my mecha license so I'm really leaning all my expectations on the whole mecha gameplay I'm about to unlock. This better not be disappointing.

I'm sorry senpai but this is just pretty much on par with side quests in general in jrpgs. Now that I'm thinking about it, dolls do break a lot huh? Not exactly a pocket of creativity on quest design. Anyway, there's nothing special here. Or could it be you meant the board quests which are even less elaborate in general? Some of the kizuna quests are nice but then again, other games also have nice quests. Nothing that stands out.

The gameplay I'm going through so far basically boils down to every teammate of mine being essentially useless even though I babysit the living shit out of them with proper resistances and whatnot and then I run around setting things up for my mega laser attack which demolishes the boss but needs a lot of prep for. Repeat. Tanking as Dunban in 1 felt a lot more engaging than this and we could actually push damage as a team even though I was controlling the tank. If the boss had some massive aoe attack that would one shot the living shit out of people you'd get in some vision shenanigans. Things felt fresher. Here I do it all or nothing get's done. And what I'm actually doing is not even that fun. It gets the job done but like I said, it feels less engaging.

You're meant to use skells almost exclusively once you unlock them due to how much easier they are build out early on (gear/augs).
A lot of people instead fall into the OD trap builds which generally suck ass till you can acquire OD count up gear in the post-game.

The game does a completely shitty job of explaining how overdrive works. You will be doing piss poor damage and battles will drag on for eternity if you dont figure out how to overdrive.

I like X's music, but then again I never played X. I just hear some of the X songs through XC2 when I use Elma as a Blade. I imagine that style of music could get old really fast when the entire ost is filled with vocal tracks. Those XcX songs stand out in XC2 though, because it sounds so different from the rest of the ost.

I think the calm, composed voice acting in the English version fits his character a lot better personally, and it makes a bigger impact when he actually loses his shit against Mumkhar.
Meanwhile in the Japanese version Dunban may have emotions but you won't be thinking about anything other than the fact that he is fricking Vegeta.

Unless it has multiple bad performances from lead characters I am usually fine with the dub. XBC2 was totally unacceptable with Rex and while not always bad Pyra and Mythra often fumbled. XBC1 has Dickson as its only notably subpar performance and it's not even then it's about par with 2's mid tier performances. Otherwise there are odd casting decisions with Riki and Mumkar but the performances themselves aren't bad. In 2, I didn't hate Zeke, Nia, or Tora, but Morag is the only notably good performance among the core cast of heroes and villains.
People just have extra leeway for things in Japanese in my opinion. A lot of the things in the script of these games is cringe as frick but the extra leeway from it being in Japanese sometimes means it doesn't trigger people as hard. I'll always give the example of 肉便器 in these conversations. Basically that is hot as frick and gets me rock hard every time I come across it but if I for some unknown reason were reading shit in English and I read meat toilet that just sounds stupid instead.
Well despite XBC2 dub being bad I do think its localization does make a concerted effort to change dialogue to sound more natural in the given dialects.

I can't answer that question as I have no inside knowledge and I don't understand Japanese to evaluate the original lines. But from all the interviews I read/watch it is still fairly common for western actors to not have access to cutscenes at all.
But to be honest with you I don't think 2's dub problems can be attributed entirely to not having material in front of them. There's plenty of actors who did outstanding work going off of character art and scene/context descriptions alone, with 0 visual information.
If I were to guess I'd say that the dub for 2 was either mismanaged or a rush job to meet deadlines.

I'm not exactly the picture of eye healthiness so take that in consideration but playing this game specifically on the 3ds made my eyes hurt. I have over a thousand hours on the 3ds over all sorts of games and I never had that issue as strongly as I had with this game specifically.

I think this is a alternate universe and the characters that reappear in 3 are different versions of the characters that appeared in 1 and 2
I like that the situation may not be straightforward, but I'd also be completely fine with a merger of the 1 and 2 worlds, and am somewhat worried that the real answer won't be as satisfying.
I'm pretty sure Dannagh Desert was destroyed when Torna sank and yet it also appears in XC3 with the same name, so there's definitely something wonky with the timeframe of where elements like the Mechonis sword were pulled from.

For the most part, yeah.
As long as you keep yourself within 3 levels of the enemies you should be "fine", if the enemies overlevel you more than that you're going to be struggling a lot.
The only sidequests that matter are the spider temple, the giants eyeball, the Bana nopon drug cartel, a smith's daughter in colony 9, and the whole of colony 6. That's it.
Nah the real cheese is Shulk, Reyn, and Dunban and just topple locking everything. Though really by the endgame you can make any character broken (except Sharla).
It's ambiguous
Shulk is shown a future that sometimes comes true and sometimes changes throughout the game
Alvis says that Zanza thinks sentient life is dangerous because they exist outside fate
But it is shown that Zanza can't see the future past his death which hints at fate still being predetermined despite what Alvis says
Xenoblade 2 does it consistently. It seems to accept determinism in the glimpses we get of Foresight. We see future events, but not future outcomes. Rex will see the paths of Malos and Akhos charging at him, but he won't see himself being brought down.
In Xenoblade, the future can sometimes be changed by witnessing it, the explanation being that the Monado is calculating future events based on ether. But where this is inconsistent is that it shows outcomes that do change, meaning it's inaccurate in the sense that it doesn't take itself into consideration. But the ending has Shulk looking forward to an unknown future, one without gods manipulating anything. The future is still deterministic, but the illusion of free will remains.
in Future connected, Shulk did ponder about such inconsistency, and thought "maybe they were Zanza's vision, crafted to guide him toward his ultimate fate". ie >cant let Shulk die before he gets to prison island >a random lizard will slap his face off, but Shulk's fate is already determined as surviving that encounter >gives Shulk a vision of said lizard slapping his face off to warm, and steer Shulk into the right direction
The final battle vision can be interpreted as Shulk snatching the vision off Zanza, whos high on overconfidence that he will wipe everything, aka taking in their own future.
In the end Shulk even mulled that no matter if such visions were just a trap. They won, everyone is no longer under the yolk of a tyrant, Melia can do her own thing now. Thats enough aka an omen of what to come, Melia becoming a tyrant for the greater good of the world
Shulk, Klaus, and Zanza are the same guy under different circumstances. not much actually, throughout the game you can see the 2 "factions" inside the church, the priests and the Praetor + his soldiers. Only the latter were "actually" evil, killing for their own nihilism. The priests, even after the church declared war on humanity, still preserved, and you can see them scattered everywhere, trying their best to help people cause "yes Praetor's gone nut, but our teaching of peace and compassion still stands. We shall uphold our ideal no matter what". Quite reflecting of what most big religions are lately too. The big wigs can be evil, but the local priests still want to do his best for the faith and the community.

I like how in the Praxis and Theory side quest it’s specifically Morag leading the conversation with the Gormotti Ardanian soldier cause it’s her job. I do hope 3 handles quest design more like 2 and Torna, major side quests for heroes being voiced cutscenes and then a majority of the smaller ones actually involving the party instead of a generic “I’d like to hear more about this.”
Was that her ID card? I thought it was just a random person’s card. If it was, she probably only had a part of her taken like Klaus, and that other half that stayed ate shit on the surface I guess.

No, the universes are still separate as of Future Connected. Having said that, the fog king's rift might have been a sign of the start of a dimensional collapse. It seems likely that without the power of the conduit propping it up, the XB1 dimension would eventually collapse back into reality.

Comparing to X and 2's "at least there are some funny stories attached" 1 was a low point.
Your general every day jrpg side quest won't take you literal hours walking around the big areas and/or fast traveling to respawn the items and even that is a gamble. Every xenoblade 1 player will shudder at the thought of trying to find black liver beans again.
You know how people liken Xenoblade to a single player MMO? The sidequests really drive that home. You just straight up walk into a new town with a gajillion new exclamation marks on the map and most of them are quests where you have to kill a certain amount of things or collect however many items. It’s not great
I found 1's sidequests a lot more tolerable than 2's. In 2, you constantly have to go back in forth from the quest giver and to the next objective which just feels like the game is just trying to waste more of your time. In 1, you complete the objective given and you're done with it. I don't really understand why anyone claims the sidequests in 2 are any better when they have you doing mostly the same shit 1 has you do with a lot more tedium and extra steps. All they really have going for them are some cutscenes.
You know those quests that were broken up into multiple parts in 1? Stuff like “Exploring the Makna Ruins,” “A Young Captain’s X,” the one with the liar in the refugee camp, the one where you help the two High Entia make an expedition to Valak Mountain, etc. All of those in 1 are split up into multiple quests, where sometimes the split between one step of the quest into another is locked behind accessing a new area, and sometimes it’s just padding out the amount of quests. In 2, most of those multi step quests are condensed into a single quest, with appropriately sized rewards. It also helps that the towns are a lot more condensed in 2, making running back to the quest giver a lot quicker.
1 doesn’t have moronic as frick field skills and merc quests either. The thing is there isn't anything interesting or entertaining about swapping blades for a skill check. It's tedious, and whiile 1 sidequests are tedious, they're very direct. 2 just adds more bullshit to sidequests but doesn't fix the tedium. You just get more busy work, and things that make quests take longer. Even Vess' quests didn't feel worth it with all of the shit you have to jump around for.

For some Blade quests you need to have a Blades unique skill up to a certain level, and to do that you have to do multiple tasks like kill unique monsters, collect items from collection points, and in some horrible cases do Merc Missions, though I can't think of a blade that has all 3 off the top of my head.

Pretty sure Poppi's Qtpi uprade quest requires all 3 since you need to collect golden cogs, pass the field skill checks in the class, and get batteries from merc missions.

If you genuinely care about the story, yes. When XB2 was announced, we were wondering if any prior blade games would affect the story. With XB3 they outright said that the worlds of XB1 and 2 are merged, and they've given us some possible red herring characters from the previous games in the trailers.
But I'm also sure that you can just enjoy XB1 after the fact too.

Some of the kizuna quests are nice but then again, other games also have nice quests. Nothing that stands out.

The gameplay I'm going through so far basically boils down to every teammate of mine being essentially useless even though I babysit the living shit out of them with proper resistances and whatnot and then I run around setting things up for my mega laser attack which demolishes the boss but needs a lot of prep for. Repeat. Tanking as Dunban in 1 felt a lot more engaging than this and we could actually push damage as a team even though I was controlling the tank. If the boss had some massive aoe attack that would one shot the living shit out of people you'd get in some vision shenanigans. Things felt fresher. Here I do it all or nothing get's done. And what I'm actually doing is not even that fun. It gets the job done but like I said, it feels less engaging.

You're meant to use skells almost exclusively once you unlock them due to how much easier they are build out early on (gear/augs).
A lot of people instead fall into the OD trap builds which generally suck ass till you can acquire OD count up gear in the post-game.

I think the calm, composed voice acting in the English version fits his character a lot better personally, and it makes a bigger impact when he actually loses his shit against Mumkhar.

Unless it has multiple bad performances from lead characters I am usually fine with the dub. XBC2 was totally unacceptable with Rex and while not always bad Pyra and Mythra often fumbled. XBC1 has Dickson as its only notably subpar performance and it's not even then it's about par with 2's mid tier performances. Otherwise there are odd casting decisions with Riki and Mumkar but the performances themselves aren't bad. In 2, I didn't hate Zeke, Nia, or Tora, but Morag is the only notably good performance among the core cast of heroes and villains.
People just have extra leeway for things in Japanese in my opinion. A lot of the things in the script of these games is cringe as frick but the extra leeway from it being in Japanese sometimes means it doesn't trigger people as hard. I'll always give the example of 肉便器 in these conversations. Basically that is hot as frick and gets me rock hard every time I come across it but if I for some unknown reason were reading shit in English and I read meat toilet that just sounds stupid instead.
Well despite XBC2 dub being bad I do think its localization does make a concerted effort to change dialogue to sound more natural in the given dialects.
XB1 only came out as well as it did because the actors had all the finished scenes in front of them as they were recording. 2 didn't have that luxury and 3 won't either. go with JP.

Also I obviously mean no Japanese game. Western games are a different story. The actors for red dead redemption 2 worked on the game for 4 to 5 years for example.
I can't answer that question as I have no inside knowledge and I don't understand Japanese to evaluate the original lines. But from all the interviews I read/watch it is still fairly common for western actors to not have access to cutscenes at all.
But to be honest with you I don't think 2's dub problems can be attributed entirely to not having material in front of them. There's plenty of actors who did outstanding work going off of character art and scene/context descriptions alone, with 0 visual information.
If I were to guess I'd say that the dub for 2 was either mismanaged or a rush job to meet deadlines.
XC2 in general was rushed obviously. The game didn't even have a new game+ when it was release. Everything had to be patched in by future patches that should of had been in the base game since the beginning.

I'm not exactly the picture of eye healthiness so take that in consideration but playing this game specifically on the 3ds made my eyes hurt. I have over a thousand hours on the 3ds over all sorts of games and I never had that issue as strongly as I had with this game specifically.

After the Direct trailer I think most people are expecting it to be clones, since we already saw people in pods.
I like that the situation may not be straightforward, but I'd also be completely fine with a merger of the 1 and 2 worlds, and am somewhat worried that the real answer won't be as satisfying.
I'm pretty sure Dannagh Desert was destroyed when Torna sank and yet it also appears in XC3 with the same name, so there's definitely something wonky with the timeframe of where elements like the Mechonis sword were pulled from.

As long as you keep yourself within 3 levels of the enemies you should be "fine", if the enemies overlevel you more than that you're going to be struggling a lot.
you'll be overleveled if you do sidequests but if you dont do all of colony 6 then you're gonna be missing shit

Xenoblade 2 does it consistently. It seems to accept determinism in the glimpses we get of Foresight. We see future events, but not future outcomes. Rex will see the paths of Malos and Akhos charging at him, but he won't see himself being brought down.
In Xenoblade, the future can sometimes be changed by witnessing it, the explanation being that the Monado is calculating future events based on ether. But where this is inconsistent is that it shows outcomes that do change, meaning it's inaccurate in the sense that it doesn't take itself into consideration. But the ending has Shulk looking forward to an unknown future, one without gods manipulating anything. The future is still deterministic, but the illusion of free will remains.
in Future connected, Shulk did ponder about such inconsistency, and thought "maybe they were Zanza's vision, crafted to guide him toward his ultimate fate". ie

Only the latter were "actually" evil, killing for their own nihilism. The priests, even after the church declared war on humanity, still preserved, and you can see them scattered everywhere, trying their best to help people cause "yes Praetor's gone nut, but our teaching of peace and compassion still stands. We shall uphold our ideal no matter what". Quite reflecting of what most big religions are lately too. The big wigs can be evil, but the local priests still want to do his best for the faith and the community.

Comparing to X and 2's "at least there are some funny stories attached" 1 was a low point.
Your general every day jrpg side quest won't take you literal hours walking around the big areas and/or fast traveling to respawn the items and even that is a gamble. Every xenoblade 1 player will shudder at the thought of trying to find black liver beans again.
You know how people liken Xenoblade to a single player MMO? The sidequests really drive that home. You just straight up walk into a new town with a gajillion new exclamation marks on the map and most of them are quests where you have to kill a certain amount of things or collect however many items. It’s not great
I found 1's sidequests a lot more tolerable than 2's. In 2, you constantly have to go back in forth from the quest giver and to the next objective which just feels like the game is just trying to waste more of your time. In 1, you complete the objective given and you're done with it. I don't really understand why anyone claims the sidequests in 2 are any better when they have you doing mostly the same shit 1 has you do with a lot more tedium and extra steps. All they really have going for them are some cutscenes.
You know those quests that were broken up into multiple parts in 1? Stuff like “Exploring the Makna Ruins,” “A Young Captain’s X,” the one with the liar in the refugee camp, the one where you help the two High Entia make an expedition to Valak Mountain, etc. All of those in 1 are split up into multiple quests, where sometimes the split between one step of the quest into another is locked behind accessing a new area, and sometimes it’s just padding out the amount of quests. In 2, most of those multi step quests are condensed into a single quest, with appropriately sized rewards. It also helps that the towns are a lot more condensed in 2, making running back to the quest giver a lot quicker.
1 doesn’t have moronic as frick field skills and merc quests either. Imagine having to gather a bunch of shitty flowers and wood, then having to kill a bunch of shitty monsters, THEN having to do a 30 minute merc quest, THEN FINALLY needing field skills none of your blades have or can level up, all in one quest. I love XC2, but it can be cancer sometimes.
Swapping blades around and giving some blades you don't usually use a chance to help because they have a skill that is good for the quest is a good thing. Sure as frick beats roaming around trying to find a specific item for hours.
I can see where you’re coming from, but I’m personally not a fan of being locked out of completing a quest just because rng didn’t give me a blade that has the field skill I need. Even worse if it was a tediously long quest.
The thing is there isn't anything interesting or entertaining about swapping blades for a skill check. It's tedious, and whiile 1 sidequests are tedious, they're very direct. 2 just adds more bullshit to sidequests but doesn't fix the tedium. You just get more busy work, and things that make quests take longer. Even Vess' quests didn't feel worth it with all of the shit you have to jump around for.

Poppi alpha and Brighid carry those skills
For some Blade quests you need to have a Blades unique skill up to a certain level, and to do that you have to do multiple tasks like kill unique monsters, collect items from collection points, and in some horrible cases do Merc Missions, though I can't think of a blade that has all 3 off the top of my head.
Pretty sure Poppi's Qtpi uprade quest requires all 3 since you need to collect golden cogs, pass the field skill checks in the class, and get batteries from merc missions.

If you genuinely care about the story, yes. When XB2 was announced, we were wondering if any prior blade games would affect the story. With XB3 they outright said that the worlds of XB1 and 2 are merged, and they've given us some possible red herring characters from the previous games in the trailers.
But I'm also sure that you can just enjoy XB1 after the fact too.
I think it's another misdirection by Takahashi. Remember he hid the face that xb2 was directly connected to xb1 up to release. with 3, he just showed imagery of both games up front either because he didn't think he could hide anything or because he's taking us on another ruse cruise.

Played Xenoblade Chronicles 2 until chapter 3, but decided to go back and play the first one. I just want to know, does the pacing of the story of the first one gets slower? I am in chapter 4 and I kinda feel like things are happening way too fast.

That was removed, the god awful skill system that made you have to get shit like instant art access is gone, the horrid class system attached to the gacha blade is gone, art canceling is better realized going by the footage, those stupid skill checks are gone, the new gimmick is the hero system which is a playable 7th party member but they may only be for specific story quests and mostly side content? We don't know.
