Just finished Chrono Trigger. How does it compare? I don't like ATB, but loved everything else and I'm looking for other RPGs with characters I will care about.
The story is the main appeal. The battles are turn based, but very shallow. Be forewarned that the story takes a LONG time to "get going" and you're going to spend like 2 dozen hours sitting through incomprehensible late 90's sci-fi anime nonsense before it all finally comes together. There is a ton of payoff and it is worth pushing through for if you're even remotely intrigued.
I would say Chrono Trigger is better than Xenogears but both are probably worth playing. Chrono Trigger is like a perfect little package that is paced perfectly from start to finish. Xenogears has shit tons ambition and is at points brilliant, but it's paced quite badly. It has an excellent start but then really drags for a long time, then it picks up but the last third or so of the game is very unfinished because Square ran out of time and money. So you get scenes of the main character sitting on a chair in empty black space narrating the dungeons they cut from the game. But to some that's a bonus in a way since the long long dungeons are one of the things that makes it drag.
I beat it last year and had a blast, and it was the first PS1 game I ever bothered finishing actually. That said, I did use some hacks to make the character run by default + make the text faster. Also by the time I reached the sewers I consulted a walkthrough and I probably was better off for it. A lot of the fights in this game are really obtuse, like "wait X amount of turns to attack or die instantly and get set back by 30 minutes of playtime"
Even all that aside it was super worth it, this is an experience that'll stick with you
it has a flavor that people either love or hate.. like onions. The story was ok. the graphics were a change of pace at the time... i dont think it holds up well at all.. the combat is dumb. The gears are cool.. but again , gear combat is dumb.. I seem to recall Elly was Fei's soulmate or some shit like their souls were adam and eve, always meant to be together.. but Elly is fkn stupid and gave no hot girl anime vibes at all. Fei is meh as a main char.. Citan is obiwan style guru.. Bart is genero pirate rebel... i think you get Blanca from SF too... pretty sure there is a 2nd chick with a pink gear... but idk.. i guess not many memorable party members 🙁
It's way too pretentious
If it had delivered on all that anime bullshit at the end, the sure it would be pretentious but still good, but no, it goes to shit at the end
What payoff lol. You can literally see where they knew the budget was gonna run out, and when they were like oh shit the budget is gone what now. It turns into a slideshow lol don’t get his expectations up. You play this game for shit like anime characters nailed to crosses and the overall confusion not a great story kek
Holy fricking shit, this is a tough script in Japanese.
I was able to play FF7 and FF8 no problem... had some dictionary lookups, sure, but not excessive. Then I tried to play Xenogears in JP. Wow, it's in another universe.
I know the English translation is a mess, but I have newfound respect for the translation. It was done on a low budget under extreme time pressure. And geez, the script does not frick around.
Well, the English script was translated by literally 3 people (after several quit) over the course of a couple of months. Apparently the development team gave little support, so the translators didn't have the whole script in front of them either. They instead were translating one-off "snippets" of text one by one, out of order.
The JP script uses fairly advanced vocabulary and idioms, far exceeding FF7. The FF7 script is really at middle school level. The Xenogears script is at mid to upper high school level. You can immediately tell it was basically written for adults, while FF7 was written for middle schoolers. My JP vocab deck has 30k words right now (sorted by frequency), and Xenogears frequently used vocabulary not in my deck and not in the 30k most common words.
I’ve never played in English so I can’t tell you the difference. But you know how sometimes a story makes no sense because it’s trying to be pretentious or goofy or all sorts of stuff and you don’t know what’s really going on but you just kinda push though and deal with the mental illness of whoever wrote it? Imagine doing that in something other than your first language with grammar that doesn’t always tell you the subject or object of the sentence and oh yeah it’s all backwards and written in pictures. The pictures are shitty and hard to read too cuz it’s not print it’s pixels.Like that.
i retranslated the script with copious notes if you want to peruse it. i originally put it on everyone's favorite website but someone compiled it into a doc:
someone was asking questions and making statements sort of like they intended on doing it, but officially no, i don't think anyone is working on that
I've, obviously, no frame of reference to the accuracy of any of this but I appreciate time and energy being put into something. Great job, and fair play to having the balls to put your username out in the open in this shithole.
thank you. and yeah, there i am, just frick my shit up

I started it last year after hearing a lot of praise for it since it came out, and dropped it after a dozen hours or so. The pacing felt really bad. The opening was the generic JRPG setup with mechs and then it just dragged on with the plot barely moving forward. If you really like '90s anime aesthetics and themes, you will probably still like it, though.
after finishing the game, did the game really needed to use any of the christian symbolism?
i feel like none of then added anything aside from being used as a way to hide what they were talking about and this game already have too much of a problem with the amount of "he,him, she, her", its just constantly trying to hide from the player what they are talking about
hold up what? The roof?
You are not witty.

I would say Chronotrigger is better than Xenogears is going to be the understatement of 2024 OP
Xenogears is Chrono Trigger 2. Much of the same team, many similar same vibes, story beats, and environments.
Xenogears is brilliantly terrible. Do not expect Chronotrigger polish. Expect some truly ridiculous shit and maybe you’ll be ok
wretchedly uninteresting combat and I felt like I'd already experienced the story through multiple other games/anime. couldn't finish it.

It holds up great, one of my favorite RPGs.

I hate this coomer moe shit that has absolutely ruined all Japanese media.
Frick off, it's not feminism for a female character to just be a love interest without moe shit. This was normal in retro games.
elly is the quigon jin of xeno
It's way too pretentious

It's still my favorite game, haven't found anything better yet.
Very wrong, the payoff is huge. The twists keep coming right up to the final scenes, and they are satisfying.

Tell us more. How different is the Japanese script compared to the English translation?

I would’ve quit too. See wha
See what this guy said? The most common 30k words. He ain’t lying to you he knows what he’s talking about 30k is fricked

Has anyone put your retranslation in to the game yet?

A shit.
We thought you dead?
I admit this is one game i'm glad i just watched a longplay of, but even then i haven't brought myself to finish the final 5 hours of dialogue.
