I didn’t realize this was true until five years in. It’s been 12 years now and I’m STILL on Ganker. I live a relatively normal life but goddamn this is the only website I go to; I’m just addicted to anonymous shitposting I guess. The whole karma-grubbing shit on all the other forums/sites is repulsive to me

I'm old, and I don't play NEW games. The last 3 years, I've probably played less than 6 different games (Hitman, FFXIV, Persona, Yakuza ... all I can remember). Just part of getting old. Your free time becomes scarce, and you're less likely to waste it on shit you're pretty sure you aren't going to like.

Ive been going on and off lately but i cant quit for good. I got a nice couple of months without but once life got a bit stressful again, i started coming again. I want to drop it soon again so i can be productive and get adult stuff done.

Best thing about leaving (and why its so hard) is that the rest of the internet is somehow worse save for youtube and any non interactive bank of information. The case is that quitting Ganker means quitting most of the internet for me, so i get to read books, draw things and face upfront the not so exciting obstacles in my life.

In fact im dropping this right now and reading a fricking book i have in my baggage.

I consider the n64's pointless collectathon games as a precursor to dopamine number feedback games like borderlands and cod. Rare discovered watching number tick up was an easy way to keep players playing - you didn't have to make it fun, just make number go up.

There's a reason Banjo Kazooie is 100x more beloved than Banjo Tooie or DK64 but even then Banjo Kazooie love has definitely seemed to have fallen off over the past couples of years while Mario 64 (which actually has fun movement) is still very beloved. It's also why pretty much every 3D platformer these days very heavily features wide, fluid movesets, which no Rare game pretty much ever had

Rare made platformers and shooters. They were also great with adding charm and story to their games and made N64 as popular as it was given with what they had to work with. Arguably they made better games for SNES. They were rewarded with being thrown under the bus by Nintendo shortly after they took another title they had planned for N64 and were told to mash one of Miyamotos Dying IP's in it for the Gamecube.

                >So like an Arcade game you mean?
No arcade scoring is very different and usually involves a sort of meta game, ie psyvariar's graze system or cotton 2's juggling. Banjo and Mario 64 are about watching the counter tick up 1 at a time until a capacity is reached.

This is one of the few times the term "fetch quest" is most appropriate in a single player game. The term is mostly about MMO quests that are just busywork to pad sub time. In other single player games when a quest has you pick up something you are playing through the area as you do it, the point of the mission to fetch the item is more of a bread trail to get you to experience the areas in the game, where as in MMOs its often just a field with mobs every time, so the derogatory term "fetch quest" is earned. Platformers on the 64 often had fetch quest type items/missions that were so bad they rivalled MMOs, as seen in banjo tooie and donkey kong.

I grew up with a Nintendo Entertainment System, little man. Born in 1987, first game was Tetris on the NES at 2 years old. Then immediately moved on to Ninja Gaiden and Super Mario Bros as well as Duckhunt. Had all those awful movie licensed games like Back to the Future, Batman, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (pic related lives in my head rent free for 33 years.)
After that came the Geneis with Sonic 1 and 2, skipped 3 somehow and got Knuckles. Loved Cyborg Justice, Madden NFL 94, AHHHH Real Monsters, and Terminator 2 although it was hard as frick.
After this I got the Nintendo 64 and Turok 64 for my 10th birthday. I even remember the day and how it went. It was the 4th of July 1997 so this is the 26 anniversary next year for me frick. My uncle was drunk and wanted to get me a nice gift for my 10th birthday a month early. Went straight to Toys R'Us just the two of us, insanely reckless move by my uncle and parents there, and he actually did it bought them on the spot. When I finally got home, I realized it doesn't come with a Coax or RF Antenna adapter, only RCA composite cables and my tiny CRT in my bedroom didn't have those. Had to hook them up to my dad's 27" huge ass screen in his entertainment system. I never hooked those types of cables up and had no idea what I was doing. My uncle didn't really help because he didn't want to frick with my dad's setup and went back outside to hang with my grandpa and dad. After awhile I finally figured it out, snapped that N64 power switch on and saw the fricking legal screen for Turok. Then came the beautiful logo screens and main menu. AS THIS HAPPENS my dad comes in the house, also drunk, telling me I need to disconnect it right now he wants to show my grandpa and uncle some documentary thing about UFOs. I had to disconnect it and sit there with an N64 and the most awesome game I had ever seen Turok 64, just sitting there unable to use them. I had to wait a week to get the RF adapter. It was torture.

Most people that grew up with games still play them. The only reason this is a "new" thing is because people that were 40 in the 90s didn't grow up with home consoles. It wasn't embedded as a large part of their life early on.

I got an NES for Christmas when I was 13, by the way. And I'm sitting at a desk with 3 monitors for gaming.
