Yeah there's metric butt-tons of filler spells but Blue Mage is pretty much always like that even in XI where there are metric butt-tons of unique spells. The catch-22 of everything being unique also meaning you're even less likely to take those super unique spells over more general spells, sometimes it's better to have a certain elemental filler spell for Masked Carnivale and ignore the wacky woohoo pizza spells. >cute glam till 80

Sharlayan has been reasonably populated throughout the whole expansion though, at least on my server. Maybe it helps that the marketboard is really close to the aetheryte.

mmos were and still are a social hub for gamers.
everything else is just to provide you a RPG game for you. the trick though that many companies like Blizzard forget is that you need to design a rpg game that has multiplayer in it which is where we are today.
pantheon rise of the fallen while in alpha has built it correctly and ffxiv is getting there and WoW is trying to keep up.
at the end of the day it's ultimately up to you and you alone on which mmo is both social and fun enough for you to hang and play it in the longterm.
like in the picture i added was a great rpg like experience for me and it makes me happy that I get to experience cool things like this in my social hub rpg game. so i'm satisfied with ffxiv but what about you? what's your favorite social hub rpg game?

Probably Guild Wars 2? It lets 70 players on each PvE map and has huge meta events and cycling bosses so people run around and banter while trying to assemble into groups to do these events and fight these bosses. It still constantly blows me away that a map which came out 10 years ago will still be filled to the brim with players and have memes and banter just because the game is built in a way to make players organically cycle around the overworld and do content. The game is a failure in many regards, but there isn't another MMO in the world that does open world better than they do.

I played it a decade ago. I thought it’s “fates” were far more fun and better designed, and I liked he fudge as well, but so much about the game is shit it’s not worth playing. I got up doing fractals and I don’t think I talked to a single one person once; ffxiv fates are boring designed, but at this point the community is more friendly about them.

Vanilla Gw2, the game got worse with every patch since the original developers left one by one and NCsoft needed to see numbers go up. Gw2 was especially good since it was an MMO that wasn't built around raiding. Without Gw1 Anet, it quickly deteriorated and became the same gear treadmill raid content skinnerbox every other fricking MMO is. A brief reprieve with PoF, adding the unique mounts and maps designed around them, was great. HoT, EoD, and SotA (I didn't even buy this one.) were all shit. Gw3 will be shit.
Vanilla Rift was still very raid-centric, but there were things to do in the open world. This was the game I did hardcore raiding in because I had an actual group. For their time, the raids were unique, and I still have good memories of griefing Hammerknell Fortress runs with my friends. There was a boss that could mind-control you, so I put on my pvp gear and killed everyone as a joke. We all had a good laugh and went back to prog. The environment around raiding now is different, especially in 14. The world was fun, and the big open-world invasion events were great. I loved the game up until the end of Storm Legion with the start of f2p. I remember my guild quitting one by one. I was much younger than them and didn't understand why my seniors were jumping ship, but they had seen it all before. They knew the red flags, and the game crashed and burned shortly after.
Eureka was the closest experience I had to the above, from the large event driven maps, tight knight community to being among the first to enter BA. I also miss my hotwife Penny. I hope DT fills the void and gives me back niche content. Bozja wasn't the same.

Sitting on a ship waiting for it to take you places, having to physically be at the dungeon/raid location with other people
It's all inconvenient, it's way faster to teleport and queue from any location for dungeons and raids
But it's only seen as an inconvenience because it makes you believe that it slows you down from reaching the ultimate goal, the end game
But what if the game wasn't about the end game but rather about the adventure. That's what separates oldschool MMORPGs and the new stuff we have now. People who have joined FFXIV/WoW in recent years and then quit have 0 attachment to the game, because it was just a routine game they'd pick up like any other game
People that were around before it went to shit have fond memories and will forever remember those games just like how they'd remember their high school years or family events

No it does not. People are actively avoiding contacting randos unless they absolutely have to do it. You're living in imaginary world which does not exist anymore and is not coming back. Real time travel in MMOs lose their charm after the 1st few times. After that it is just an annoying waste of time. XI had this, and they added crystal warps to retail because nobody wants to spend their whole evening of free time travelling.

Kek, I mean it was a good move considering last year Blizzcon they weren't able to sell out, they had tickets available all the way to the day you could buy tickets. Meanwhile every ff14 fanfest has been sold out months in advance.
I think that's more because the giant (ultra-expensive) events just don't seem to do as well these days, while smaller events that are focused on a single game seem to do way better

Anyone else think the pictomancer spells are really ugly? I like pretty/cutesy stuff plenty but it all looks like kindergarten crayon drawings more than an artistic painter. The balls skill in the datamine really looked horrendous
arr-type boring slogfest for the first zones. Then okay-ish msq and dungeons, and finally arguably the best raids, trials and alliances that still hold up to later expansions.
the story is going to have more downs than ups until you get to Shadowbringers, and after the events of HW and post-HW it will feel like you have hit a brick wall at times. My advice is to power the frick through it and play in spurts instead of long ass sits. Take a breather to do binding coil and crystal tower if you haven't.

Yeah there's metric butt-tons of filler spells but Blue Mage is pretty much always like that even in XI where there are metric butt-tons of unique spells. The catch-22 of everything being unique also meaning you're even less likely to take those super unique spells over more general spells, sometimes it's better to have a certain elemental filler spell for Masked Carnivale and ignore the wacky woohoo pizza spells.

Sharlayan has been reasonably populated throughout the whole expansion though, at least on my server. Maybe it helps that the marketboard is really close to the aetheryte.

Probably Guild Wars 2? It lets 70 players on each PvE map and has huge meta events and cycling bosses so people run around and banter while trying to assemble into groups to do these events and fight these bosses. It still constantly blows me away that a map which came out 10 years ago will still be filled to the brim with players and have memes and banter just because the game is built in a way to make players organically cycle around the overworld and do content. The game is a failure in many regards, but there isn't another MMO in the world that does open world better than they do.
I played it a decade ago. I thought it’s “fates” were far more fun and better designed, and I liked he fudge as well, but so much about the game is shit it’s not worth playing. I got up doing fractals and I don’t think I talked to a single one person once; ffxiv fates are boring designed, but at this point the community is more friendly about them.
Vanilla Gw2, the game got worse with every patch since the original developers left one by one and NCsoft needed to see numbers go up. Gw2 was especially good since it was an MMO that wasn't built around raiding. Without Gw1 Anet, it quickly deteriorated and became the same gear treadmill raid content skinnerbox every other fricking MMO is. A brief reprieve with PoF, adding the unique mounts and maps designed around them, was great. HoT, EoD, and SotA (I didn't even buy this one.) were all shit. Gw3 will be shit.
Vanilla Rift was still very raid-centric, but there were things to do in the open world. This was the game I did hardcore raiding in because I had an actual group. For their time, the raids were unique, and I still have good memories of griefing Hammerknell Fortress runs with my friends. There was a boss that could mind-control you, so I put on my pvp gear and killed everyone as a joke. We all had a good laugh and went back to prog. The environment around raiding now is different, especially in 14. The world was fun, and the big open-world invasion events were great. I loved the game up until the end of Storm Legion with the start of f2p. I remember my guild quitting one by one. I was much younger than them and didn't understand why my seniors were jumping ship, but they had seen it all before. They knew the red flags, and the game crashed and burned shortly after.
Eureka was the closest experience I had to the above, from the large event driven maps, tight knight community to being among the first to enter BA. I also miss my hotwife Penny. I hope DT fills the void and gives me back niche content. Bozja wasn't the same.
I also loved eureka for that same reason, it was the only brief moment were 14 actually felt like an MMO
Really hoping they heard feedback about Bozja and the new exploration content is like Eureka. There is also a chance BST also gets a nice community around it, that would make the expansion worth it for me.

People who have joined FFXIV/WoW in recent years and then quit have 0 attachment to the game, because it was just a routine game they'd pick up like any other game

Kek, I mean it was a good move considering last year Blizzcon they weren't able to sell out, they had tickets available all the way to the day you could buy tickets. Meanwhile every ff14 fanfest has been sold out months in advance.
I think that's more because the giant (ultra-expensive) events just don't seem to do as well these days, while smaller events that are focused on a single game seem to do way better

the story is going to have more downs than ups until you get to Shadowbringers, and after the events of HW and post-HW it will feel like you have hit a brick wall at times. My advice is to power the frick through it and play in spurts instead of long ass sits. Take a breather to do binding coil and crystal tower if you haven't.

This, my brother almost quit in Stormblood because of how slow it is but loves Shadowbringers. Stormblood isn't bad, but it's very different, it's very asian themed at least half of it is and the other half is smaller scale politics intrigue shit which was different from the Heavensward more fantastical story we just played.
It goes back into a fantasy World with Shadowbringers. Best mmo expansion imo ever made.
