I think you are right about 2. There are things with crystal designs and I remember a key item being a crystal in the end game but nothing that's really tied into the narrative of the game.
FF2 is kind of a black sheep though and since it came right after 1, the main tropes of the games weren't really established yet akin to Zelda 2. But it's a poor argument, gotta concede that not all FF titles are about crystals.

I'm about 6 hours in and it's the flattest and blandest game I've ever played. It's not really challenging either people tell me to go for combos and such to make it feel more rewarding. But even then it's bland compared to such games. I'm at loss for words it's just absolutely terrible and i feel scammed buying it. The last game that disappointment me in a similar way was Fallout 4 with it's incredible bland story but even it was leaps and bounds better than this.

I only really have one nitpick with this game, which is a lot less than Ganker seems to have. But I don't get why they spent so much money on ambient voice acting from random townspeople, but then didn't voice act some of the additional dialogue you can get talking to NPCs. It's the Party, the Ensemble cast. It always has been. It's why every good game in the series has a good selection of characters in your party and whenever they fail to put party dynamics into the game, it fails really bad. Take XII for example: It does have a party, but it is disjointed. Or XIII, wherein the whole cast is insufferable.
Most of the beloved games in the series understands this and gave at least the main cast, their appropriate time.
None of the newer games passed XII has it, to the point where you needed DLC to flesh them out(XV), or a Lore Encyclopedia is needed (XVI)

It needs party gameplay. FFXVI is a single character game. There is not a single mainline final fantasy from 1 to 15 that has you control only one character.
In battle you literally do not control multiple people. At best you can change their AI/paradigm to want to focus on certain things like attacking or healing. You swap POVs but you play as that character and that one alone

This is playing multiple characters. Not only that but you can even do party management. 16 has none of this.
Only lightning returns forces you to control one character and it was basically cash-in. OG XIII lets you switch the lead whilst still commanding the other two through paradigms which is still controlling them mostly.

In other words, 30 min after you start NG+, it's fricking dogshit. This game's combat system gets stale quick. I'm 2 off from platinum and after I'm done. Never will touch this game. The QTE cinematic fights are unskippable and so boring to watch over and over.
Also, I forgot to mention, even after you grind your ultimate weapon, the final boss fight is still way too long and it doesn't become a cakewalk. Your damage barely increases

I'm about 6 hours in and it's the flattest and blandest game I've ever played. It's not really challenging either people tell me to go for combos and such to make it feel more rewarding. But even then it's bland compared to such games. I'm at loss for words it's just absolutely terrible and i feel scammed buying it. The last game that disappointment me in a similar way was Fallout 4 with it's incredible bland story but even it was leaps and bounds better than this.

But I don't get why they spent so much money on ambient voice acting from random townspeople, but then didn't voice act some of the additional dialogue you can get talking to NPCs. What makes a final fantasy a final fantasy?
It's the Party, the Ensemble cast. It always has been. It's why every good game in the series has a good selection of characters in your party and whenever they fail to put party dynamics into the game, it fails really bad. Take XII for example: It does have a party, but it is disjointed. Or XIII, wherein the whole cast is insufferable.
Most of the beloved games in the series understands this and gave at least the main cast, their appropriate time.
None of the newer games passed XII has it, to the point where you needed DLC to flesh them out(XV), or a Lore Encyclopedia is needed (XVI)
So what, Final Fantasy 1 wasn't a Final Fantasy because you made the party at the start and they were all functionally non-characters?
FFI was a barebones experience, but even though it was, it did give the player agency to cast multiple people with different roles.

Also, I forgot to mention, even after you grind your ultimate weapon, the final boss fight is still way too long and it doesn't become a cakewalk. Your damage barely increases

Yeah I have to max all the Eikon abilities and just beat this in Final Fantasy mode and I'm done with everything. But those cinematic fights are way too long and boring as shit
the final boss is a cake walk regardless in ff games maybe at most you die once or twice. the appeal of final fantasy is the story and seeing how broken you can make your characters via level+equipment even if it doesn't really matter just for the pure joy of it.
I think people just want one mainline title that actually plays like the first 10 games in the series after 2 decades and i think thats fair. why does final fantasy need to keep changing shit up every single entry? just make a new series

it's not even like shillup said FF wasn't staying true to its core or whatever, he just said the rpg elements were pretty surface level and they are. Witcher 3 has more RPG elements than this.
