There is no way Nanba and Seonhee gained that many levels in the short time between starting chapter 8 and getting Saeko without deliberate grinding dude.

I did not grind at all. I just ran around the map fighting the minibosses and smackdowned random encounters (Which were basically all level 28) as I ran to them or even avoided them to not become overleveled. I think Nanba was like 28 or 30 when I got out of chapter 7? Kiryu was 41 or 43 when I left chapter 6.

          Anonymous

The fact that you were able to smackdown anything at all means your Kiryu was already overleveled to hell and back. A majority of the enemies were either purple or red when chapter 8 started for me, despite my Kiryu being five or six levels higher than Nanba and Seonhee.

          >Kiryu was 41 or 43 when I left chapter 6

You didn't do the Hawaiian Haunt because floors 1-3 are completely doable at that point. EX isn't unless you grind the first floor of it for like three or four hours because you simply can't do the damage, take too much, and enemies have absurd AGI.

                >because I didn't want to destroy the game balance by overleveling grinding in dungeons
Good thing I didn't grind it at all. I ran into Sector Two at like level 34 and Sector Three at 37ish. You don't hit a wall at all until the EX Sector which is where I thought I was naturally supposed to stop because it was an insurmountable wall without grinding meaning it was for later.

All 200 Buddies, all minigame marks for Ichiban, a copy of all Sujimon collected + Sujimon Stadium beaten, Dondoko Island 5*'d and all DIYs crafted (Until I found out there's people who spawn that also hand you blueprints so screw me I guess), all minigame stores bought out (Only limited items + weapons) including duplicates of the 5* weapons that are used in crafting, all minibosses available beaten, all Walk and Talks available completed, all bonds available completed, all substories except 36 which I guess unlocks later, all romances, all Alo-Happy Tours, and the three Hawaiian Haunt sectors.

There's an enormous amount of side content before you split up at all and then even more unlocks in Kiryu's part and completion list. This is where I'm at right now in chapter 8, I just recruited Saeko and am currently doing mahjong. It took over six minutes for it to just stop showing me every single completion list mark once I unlocked the Bucket List menu.

                [...]
The dude spent like 10 hours on strikeout2

I spent two and a half hours on Spikeout because that's how long two runs take. 10 hours would be like five or six full playthroughs of the thing including stage 4 in every run when the completion list just requires all five stages beaten + all four characters played once and you can credit feed. Another hour and a half is upcoming when I head over to do it for Kiryu.

Hell no, Dondoko Island can go rot since it all wipes in NG+ and would require like 60 hours bare minimum of just waiting for sleep cycles to pick up stuff and hope it's stuff for the souvenirs or random bugs you need because fish are a joke to finish by comparison. If

You really have no right to complain about characters joining underleveled if you go this max autismo on your first playthrough. I can't imagine wasting all this time and sullying my first impression of the experience because I've just gotta max out mahjong for the 15th Yakuza game in a row.

I always do all the side content first before I progress with the story and rushing the main story isn't smart in 7 and 8 because 7 locked exclusive items behind the substories, most notably the job EXP items, so I didn't want to miss out by rushing the main story since we had no knowledge of what was limited or not due to the simultaneous release. I would have if we already knew everything. I also didn't have this issue in 7 because they didn't really have enemies constantly leveling up as you went along each chapter, they only did it in chapters 6 and 11 whereas in 8 they upgrade every chapter.

Take the alt sewer exit in stage two then enter the warehouse to get to the mall stage, then if you beat the final stage boss in the mall (the double sword yakuza guy in the room with the statue of the Big Sonic) without killing ANY of his goons you also get to play the shipyard stage.

Defense debuff did virtually nothing in Yakuza 7, but now they actually work. Attack and magic debuffs (found on tennis ace) are also good. I managed to beat the (YOKOHAMA DUNGEON SPOILER) Amon brothers using Nanba’s malodorous stench and putting the attack/magic debuff move on Seonhee.

Chitose’s unique healing move from Heiress is the only multi-target move that removes debuffs. There’s one from Pyrodancer, but it’s single target.

The Geodancer essence heals everyone (with no aoe) and removes debuffs

Actually, it’s more beneficial to have a dedicated buffer. Quite a few armors and weapons, varied between characters and classes, provide bonuses whenever they receive a buff. Geodancer and Breaker benefit from this greatly.

      Moose

      >Is it worth making a dedicated debuffer
There's no real point due to skill inheritance. Males can all just take Glory Awaits (Samurai) and Relentless Dragon's Dance (Action Star) while females can just take Noisy Racket (Tennis Ace). Nanba himself can take Malodorous Stench (Homeless Guy) if you aren't benching him. There's only so many attacks that are even worth inheriting so only having three attack slots is fine.
      >or ailment party member?
Again, skill inheritance. If you actually want to use an ailment just take the ailment attack.
If you are gonna do a Kunoichi build then you're gonna be getting AGI from her ultimate weapon anyway and Chitose is the only one who can reliably buff it to my knowledge due to Palm Tree Pose (Heiress) which is a self buff.
If you are gonna do a Samurai bleed build (I don't know why you would due to that horrible AGI) you can throw Pine, Bamboo, Plum (Samurai) onto whatever males are on your team and then have the main person (Hopefully not a Samurai) using Shadow Dance (Samurai).
      >Do they even work on bosses?
Debuffs work fine in 8, it's not like 7 where only Evasion and Accuracy down worked. Ailments work on minibosses but I think they have random resistances to certain ones because some definitely can't be hit with Drunk or Charm. Bosses seem to resist anything but DoTs.

Even within the context of 8 it makes no sense. He's presented as Kiryu's handler, a professional agent of the super secret Daidoji faction. Sure he's not a superhero like Kiryu but you'd expect him to be pretty tough and/or resourceful. And then he just dies within seconds of being shot in the stomach and doesn't even attempt to fight back. And this is a franchise where characters get shot in non-vital areas constantly and live to fight for hours after.
I understand they wanna be shocking and subversive and shit, but at least have it make sense. If the story really needed Hanawa to be on the ground & dead within seconds then have one of the goons walk up and finish the job by braining him while he's in shock from the abdomen wound.

I'd prefer they go back to smaller and denser maps that are more vertical than wide.

I like the Segway, but are they really any better than the skateboard? My only gripe is that using it in Kamurocho was pointless because of the pedestrian density.

the auto function alone makes it better, especially in an rpg game

        Moose

It's not. It's barely any faster than walking, you can't interact with anything on it or "Aloha" anyone on it, it takes roughly three or four seconds to mount and then dismount it, and worst of all it has an energy meter meaning you need to constantly visit recharge points to throw $180 at it every once in a while which is negligible after like chapter 6 but the point is that it's really annoying.
The auto function is also really poorly done because it turns off if you go up even slight inclines, bump into anyone (Including your party members), or slightly bump into some objects. If you use it to waypoint somewhere via pins it will also get extremely confused and sometimes run you into walls because it doesn't know to go around a step.

The skateboard was far better even with it knocking you off on sidewalks and when you hit people because it at least went faster.

It’s not explicitly stated, but considering that he goes back to his usual hairstyle and classic suit at the end of the game, you could say it’s a way to present how Kiryu is in a low point of his life (again) and is nothing like his old self.

Gaiden was such a better package, and it's really not just about the length of Gaiden vs. IW. Gaiden had cool villains and fights. IW's villains really sucked. Bryce was a moron. Ebina is basically Iwami 2.0 and Dwight was forgettable. And with Wong Tou you blinked and he died kek.

In contrast Gaiden did such a better job with the early game fights with Tsuruno, then the mid game shit with Nishitani and Shishido was an awesome final boss.

I ultimately don't really care about the Daidoji that much, but the difference with how much of a threat the Daidoji was in Gaiden vs. IW was just bizarre. Really felt like each story was written in their own bubble.

Infinite Wealth and Gaiden were clearly written by different teams. Or rather, perhaps Infinite Wealth was written first, then Gaiden was written afterwards.

But, with that said, Gaiden is such a good game. Its in-game cutscenes are also better than Infinite Wealth’s, the lighting is excellent and you can see a lot of texture details on the faces and skins of characters.

        >Or rather, perhaps Infinite Wealth was written first, then Gaiden was written afterwards.
I thought this was confirmed in an interview? Like they started writing gaiden as they were finishing up infinte wealth.
It's also why hanawa has such a prominent role in gaiden then gets relegated to being dead in 8

          Anonymous

Ah, true, I forgot, RGG did confirm that. Still, Hanawa saying he doesn’t know how to fight despite being a boss fight in Gaiden made that abundantly clear.

          https://automaton-media.com/en/interviews/20231030-22625/
          >There isn’t a huge difference Between Like a Dragon Gaiden and Like a Dragon 8. By this I mean that, in a sense, Like a Dragon Gaiden was derived from Like a Dragon 8. We could have just told of Kiryu’s past through a thirty-minute interlude as part of Like a Dragon 8, but we decided it would be a lot more interesting as a game of its own, which is how the project came to be. Though this meant having a whole extra game to make, it still uses the same engine, so we thought “It’s not like we have to make it from scratch,” and decided to go with it. In the end, it took us about half a year to make it.

So, it was essentially going to be part of 8's story before they pulled it out to make it a fully featured game. Meaning they probably had some idea of how Hanawa and the Daidoji were gonna go and stuff like the Castle, Shishido, and Nishitani III were added in to make it a more fleshed out game.

Moose-kun, I’d like to confirm that the Host job is still the most viable job for Nanba. The class-exclusive armor for Hosts gives them blunt, blade, and bullet resistance, which helps with his defense.

The self-healing move was removed, but it still exists in two other methods: homeless has the Stashed Bottle move, which raises drunkness and can be shared with others, and the American footballer’s self-heal Cooler Shower which raises defense as a bonus.

      Moose

Host was what I thought it would be because looking at the other jobs I really couldn't figure out what's good for him. It's basically that or Aquanaut and Aquanaut is more support + physical Frost attacks which pushes that more towards Ichiban. Chef seems like it benefits physical more than magical compared to 7, Pyrodancer is too physical oriented, Desperado is cool but is more for people who are good at both physical and magic, and everything else is physical oriented.

        Anonymous

Aquanaut might be a serious contender for Hero. Its unique armor allows the character to ignore all resistances, just like Zhao’s unique sword.

I believe the current meta is to orient Zhao as the physical damage source and Ichiban as the magic damage source. It’s almost like Aquanaut was hand-crafted for Ichiban.

          Anonymous

Doesn't Aquanaut's weapon boost physical attacks only?

            Anonymous

Aquanaut’s ultimate weapon lowers enemy resistance to ice and provides extra physical damage, if the character is at full health. However, I’m talking about the unique armor, which is what lets Aquanauts ignore all resistances.

RGG changed how damage resistance works for enemies. If any enemy is weak to fire, but resists guns, the Samurai move that’s simultaneously fire and gun will have its fire damage effectiveness nullified by the gun resistance. With Zhao’s sword and Aquanaut’s armor, you can work around the gun resistance and the Burning Arrow damage will be supereffective.

I haven't been able to find a better aquanaut weapon (or a weapon I can craft into something better) than the jet surfboard and I'm like ~level 45, job rank > 30. What the frick am I missing?

            Anonymous

Ah, don’t worry about it, it’s late-game stuff. You need to invest in Julie’s gearworks up to Level 4 (max), find the “Aquanaut’s Board” by defeating the enemy boss in the right edge of Waikiki Beach (bottom-right of the map), and have ice crystals + empty cough drop tins + shark fins/squid tentacles.

The crystals and fins/tentacles are late game items, just carry on with the best you could find.

            Anonymous

Pretty much all crafted weapons outside the ultimates use vendor weapons as base. Though at that level you could probably farm shark fin and other mats in Hawaii Haunt sector 3 for crafting the ultimate. The ultimate's base drops from a crowned shark dude on the East side of the beach I think.

          Moose

I think Hero's just not as good in this one because his buffs now require the circle range instead of being all characters and the personality buffs only increase range, not the buff. If we had the 7 Hero implanted here, ignoring equips, it would probably be the best job for Ichiban still. Being able to grant tier 2 or 3 buffs, fully heal, revive, keep yourself alive indefinitely, and have good physical blunt attacks is just great. Shame it's now fairly underwhelming due to the nerfs to his personality skills.

I haven't been able to find a better aquanaut weapon (or a weapon I can craft into something better) than the jet surfboard and I'm like ~level 45, job rank > 30. What the frick am I missing?

You can buy 5-7* weapons at the surfing store in Hawaii or sports vendor in Ijincho. You're supposed to be buying stuff from the stores, the drops and safes only go up to like 5* and most of them can't be crafted into anything.

I hate this enemy-type so much. They’re extremely tedious, all they do is spawn a clone and raise that clone’s attack, and if you don’t deal with them fast enough thanks to their gargantuan health pool, too bad, the spawned clone will spawn a yet another clone and then raise his attack as well.

A close 2nd is Angel of Megadeath. They spawn clones as well, and their attack scales in damage AND area with the number of clones in the battle.

sure but she also acknowledges that she had ample opportunities to tell them the truth about Eiji and had she not waited until the very last possible second, Hanawa/Wong would likely still be alive and Lani wouldn't have been taken - she admits that she betrayed everyone and it had disastrous consequences

They aren't going to bother updating Kamurocho unless they have a game primarily set there again, which would be another Gaiden game if anything. For now it might as well just be a legacy map they include as a bonus because it's iconic

        Anonymous

Doesn’t Kamurocho feel like it moved on from Kiryu? It’s still alive and more active than Ijincho, but it feels “empty”, for some reason.

Hell, Akiyama fricked off to Singapore when the 3K plan rolled out, he doesn’t have any stake in the city anymore.

            Anonymous

Yeah, I would love a Watase Gaiden. An Akiyama Gaiden would definitely be much more in demand by fans, same goes for Majima, but Akiyama doesn’t even live in Kamurocho anymore, and Majima perhaps can have a fresh adventure, but he already got his fill.

              Anonymous

I could see them doing a Saejima Gaiden just to better introduce the character to people who started with 0 and 7. It's a little sad seeing people get to the Majima and Saejima boss fight in 7 and seeing people go "OMG IT'S MAJIMA AND... some guy"

              Anonymous

I'm not sure what you could do with Majima's character considering 0 was the conclusion to his "arc" which was really just filling in his backstory.
You can tell they have nothing in store for him because they've done absolutely nothing new with him since 0.

Kamurocho feels like a relic of bygone times. I think the weird "emptiness" comes from how it no longer feels like an exciting, seedy haven for members of the underworld to prowl. It's no longer swarmed with gangsters or pleasure-seekers. It's the kind of unsightly place that Bleach Japan wanted to sterilize, and it feels like it actually was sorta sterilized--or at least that a light has been shone on it and revealed that's just an old shithole.

            Anonymous

It's definitely been gentrified to shit; the way it changed and "abandoned" its seedy past is definitely intentional and part of the series' theming.

              Anonymous

It's depressingly realistic. I yearn for neon-lit debauchery and gang warfare in the streets.

            Anonymous

It certainly feels that way. Judgment was the last true game that showcased Kamurocho as a seedy and dangerous place, especially with the Tojo still around and the Keihin gang being a menace. It was still somewhat dangerous in LJ due to RK’s presence, but most of their action took place in Kamurocho since they were unaware pawns for the glowies chasing after Kuwana.

It’s still a seedy place with immoral and dangerous people, as seen through Kiryu’s memoirs, but honestly? They just don’t have the same bite and danger as in the older games.

late game spoilers if the daidoji sent kiryu to look for akane because of lani, that means they were aware that lani's safety was important to thwarting bryce's position as palekana sage, which means they had always known that palekana was the real enemy (probably as well as ebina depending on how aware they were of all parties included in the nuclear waste deal), right? if that's the case, why didn't they tell kiryu literally anything about the finer details of the mission WHICH WOULD BE IMPORTANT FOR A FIELD AGENT TO KNOW GOING IN? kiryu could probably assume that the local gangs might be a good choice of enemy, but who would suspect a religious organization so deeply-embedded in the welfare of hawaiians in need of help? furthermore, why the frick weren't there more daidoji agents on lookout near the hideout? are these frickers just more incompetent than the tojo clan, or am i the dipshit here?

      Anonymous

From what I remember, the Daidoji don't have a ton of resources they can mobilize quickly outside of Japan, hence the sort of skeleton crew that Hanawa and Kiryu have to work with. Kiryu was also pretty open about saying that the Daidoji knew dick all about the situation outside of needing to get Lani out of there to thwart Ebina because the Seiryu / Palekana plan would work to benefit the current Japanese government whom the Daidoji oppose. It's just sort of messy in the second half of the game overall.

      Anonymous

Kiryu is a godawful liar, if he needed to work with the front facing side of palekana to get information, which is what he and Ichiban did do, he wouldn't be able to hide his disgust if he knew they were the real bad guys.

I did Ichiban's finale under-leveled (42) and Heiress' AoE agility debuff + Linebacker's heat move that buffs the whole party's defense carried super hard. Giant Shark and Giant Squid were tough, but Bryce was surprisingly fair in comparison.

The nasty thing about doing fights under-leveled is not only the damage you take but every enemy outspeeding your team.

Zhao had to be in. He's going to be integral to the plot of 9 when his secret irezumi is revealed.
Joongi will be killed for dramatic effect.

Why haven't done anything interesting with Majima since 0 (not including the mediocre extra content in Shitwami 1 and 2) even though he's the most popular character in the series?

      Anonymous

He's a character linked with the Tojo Clan, which has been steadily declining since Yakuza 1

Every game since the first has tried to find a way for Majima to make sense in the story and give you a reason to fight him and to some degree it works, but you can tell for a while they didn't really know what to do with him for a while.
      >Yakuza 1 he's kind of like the rival character most action games have that you fight a couple times
      >Yakuza 2, suddenly he's the leader of purgatory and has a new more innocent sidekick(Nishida) and you fight him to get info about the florist
      >Yakuza 3, he's originally just there as the signal of the end of Kiryu's life in Kamurocho and then is there to give you someone within the Tojo that's not slimy and questionable
      >Yakuza 4, they actually realized they need to establish more about Majima as a character and give him a backstory as well as a permanent character to associate with him outside of Kiryu(Saejima)
      >Yakuza 5, go more into his backstory and work it into the status quo shift that came from Saejima being introduced
      >Yakuza 0, they realized people want to see more of Majima's backstory and made a whole game showing his life between the hit and Yakuza 1
      >Yakuza 6, they had nothing to do with him and just wrote him off immediately
      >Yakuza 7, without Kiryu and Saejima as protags, they REALLY have no idea what to do with him now and just kind of have him hanging with Daigo 24/7
      >Yakuza 8, they REALLY don't know what to do with Daigo, Majima, and Saejima anymore and just kind of have them show up and fight because Kiryu wants to and shoehorn them into the finale with no real buildup.

Majima ending up being Daigo's right hand man was set-up by 3. Majima has been taking care of Daigo ever since Kiryu told him to, and after Kiryu "dies" it's natural that he carries on looking after Daigo and the Tojo Clan for Kiryu's sake. It's the "honorable yakuza" aspect of Majima.

          Anonymous

yeah, but 4 and 5 kind of forget that aspect since they need to establish Saejima, so when it comes back in 7/end of 6, it just feels kind of lame. By the time this element of Majima's character comes back, it's been near 10 years since it was actually established as a thing for him, so most people who would've been following the series from the start would've kind of forgotten about it and will just view it as a lame way to sideline the guy.

          lmao
Majima gave a manly promise to Kiryu that he will help Daigo, but turned tail and abandoned him after he got outsmarted by HAMAZAKI, of all people.

He was a shitty right hand man because his heart's not in it at all, he doesn't care about the Tojo or Daigo one bit, he just is doing it as a promise to Kiryu and halfassing it at that.

Can't be right, the first scene in Y1 Majima is already doting on him like he wants his wiener in his ass.

I can't remember exactly what it's about, but I think it's just because he hears about a strong guy beating people up and looking for Haruka. Maybe Kiwami changed it or something to shoe in that stupid Majima Everywhere system.

It's just because Kiryu is considered the strongest, and Majima think so can beat Kiryu and become the strongest

He sensed Kiryu had a good heart and wanted to put it to the test. When he was right and Kiryu didn't waiver, he ended up obsessed.

Majima has never been treated in a way that makes it seem like anyone on the team hates him. I think they just genuinely don't know what else to do with him.

The most popular characters in this series are usually the worst. See: Majima, Akiyama. They're just too one-note, which I guess is what people like about them, to write a good story around.

    >shall we pull him off the mission or send back up?
    >Nah, just Hanawa plus 4 dudes lol
    >Even Ichiban said that a retired fat detective and a homeless nurse will be more helpful in rescuing Kiryu than Daidoji
Why did they write Daidoji to be a big deal in 6 and Gaiden, then made them a complete b***h in 8?

Overall it was a good Yakuza game, but the Marvel movie script template (characters with no involvement in the story at all introduced only for fanservice purposes and le quirky sarcastic punchlines ala Tony Stark ), got annoying at some point.

Also the game ends on a giant ass blue ball, they will do a DLC or another Gaiden spin-off prequel to Yakuza 9 to milk the cow as much as possible

So they ARE dating and the ending was just wacky japanese humor bullshit, huh. They're breaking up by 9 though 100%, no way the fujos and the women on the writing team will allow the protagonist to be taken with a love life.

            >I want Ichiban to be happier with someone better than Saeko.
I agree but they're never adding a second love interest. He gets her, or he gets oneitis syndrome and is single for the rest of his runtime in the series. So if this is the best we can get for him then frick it.

I'd rather Ichiban be single forever. 8's romantic subplot was so cancerous that I never want to see it shitting up an RGG game again.
