What is it about the PS2 games that makes them so much more kino than the rest of the series?

It's the PS2 graphics man, can't be replicated
This and the soundtrack was rawer, energetic
receive you is amazing and the best one.
>3 being the worst I've played so far
is not as bad people said, it is a bit empty but those kids are touching soul levels
I just got into the series by playing the first PS2 game. The "Funk Goes On" song is ingrained in my head.
GET FUNKY
The 6th Gen really was the peak of graphics in games.
Does anyone have the image of the Ryuji fight from Yakuza 2 compared to Kiwami 2?
It was shocking how much of a downgrade it looked like.
this one?
Yes! Thank you, I'll save this now.
It really is a shame that people just skip the PS2 games.
Agreed. Especially considering how short they are.
According to my notes I beat 1 in a week and 2 in three weeks.
For comparison my recent playthrough of 3 took me six months.
I can understand skipping a long game if you're just not interested in it, but when the first two are so short (compared to later entries) why not just knock them out real quick?
Most people seem to view how good a Yakuza game is by how much wacky shit you can do in it so that kinda rules them out by default in a lot of people’s eyes.
You aren't tired of repetition by that point. They're not actually different.
It's my suspicion that everyone with this opinion skipped Kenzan.
When I played that after marathoning 1 & 2 I was like a caveman with a smartphone.
It's not. I've been playing them since the beginning and can say the Yakuza games didn't reach their true potential until Yakuza 5
I can't tell if you're trolling, but if not would like to know why you feel that way. I played since the beginning and Y5 was the one that made me quit.
I found that the gameplay was so dry by that point, no enemies even put up a fight. Not to mention that by the time you got the fun moves you were changed to a different character.
I much preferred the older games, even 3 and 4 over 5.
I remember everyone used to shit on 5 but now people consider that the best one because it has the most content, even though the content is shit
most people are moronic, don't let your opinions be changed by how many people do this or say this etc...
When it came out my friend who is a big Yakuza fan said it was one of his favourite games, that's why I was surprised when I played it and disliked it so much. IT was the first Yakuza game (excepting Dead Souls) that I didn't even bother finishing. Didn't play another Yakuza until 0, which I thought was good but not one of my favourites.
This thread is making me want to go back to the PS2 games!
Yakuza 2 is my favourite but I really like 4 and 0 too.
Based 4 enjoyer.
The first two games and 4 really capture that noir feeling that I love. 4 has some of my favorite music in the series also.
the atmosphere is phenomenal and not matched in later games, the fixed camera perspective, the sounds, less outright sillyness, rewarding exploration with side stories not being marked and fail able, less handholding in general and just the overall tone of the games, it all comes together beautifully.
they are not perfect and it's gets a bit tiresome when you have figured out it's super obvious, clearly telegraphed and contrived plot twists many many hours before the game reveals them.
both PS2 games remain my favorites in series, 3 being the worst I've played so far
Yakuza 3 is the last game to have the trademark SEGA blue sky vibe. If you are playing the series right now wait til some time passes, you'll develop fondness for 3 over time
3 is far from my favorite but Okinawa as an environment is super comfy
Yes. 3 honestly feels like a slightly better looking 6th gen game and I'm saying this as a compliment. It has the soul of the Dreamcast in it
Im up to zero now
I played remastered 3 and I read they fricked up enemies blocking in that so that probably soured my overall opinion a bit as well
what I really liked was that there was no indication where or when a side story begins, you have to continuously explorer and seek them out.
the one in the underground casino you need to bring haruka to start and have already unlocked the casino, then making all the right choices would not have hit the same if at every turn I was just chasing markers on a minimap and your actions mattered and could have consequences.
In 3 you meet a actor you escorted around town in 2 and thanks you for that, I failed that sidequest in 2 but in newer games I would have had infinite retries
>side stories not being marked
To add to this, they are included in the main menu under missions. But it literally just has the name of it with no description and no indication of what to do next. You need to actually remember what you were supposed to do and where you're supposed to go.
Adding on top to your points, sometimes you're supposed to go to certain areas on the map, and despite the map being interactive and will tell you certain areas when you hover over them, it does not tell you every location. Sometimes, you need to actually remember where a location is on the map. I really like these details.

The brain damage you got as a kid that makes you unable to develop and move on from your childhood.
different writer and better atmosphere
it's the ching chong faces
YOU WALK ALONE
Kiryu doesn't look that Asian in the first 2 games
Something about dragon engine Kiryu weirds me out in a way I can’t really explain. Yakuza 5 Kiryu is my favorite.
Mark Hamill voicing a jap.
Funny that he doesn't even remember that role
after a certain point, you can tell no one on the staff has ever heard of virtua fighter so the combat devolves to miserable rpg bullshit
y1 and 2 are arguably too easy but at least they aren't a miserable slog. punches have value. if you throw a b***h, he gets hurt.
