The Switch is a handheld. It's closer to mobile gaming than console gaming and the form factor is so different that it offers something the PS and Xbox do not . Actual consoles are so dead that Nintendo doesn't even make them anymore after the Wii U failed.

When people say that they tend to imply specifically home consoles like the ps and xbox. The switch is an entirely different story, firstly because it's a handheld and because it is aimed at a very different market segment. So it is assumed that the switch isn't considered in this case.

As I said, ms and sony aren't killing the consoles, they are simply adapting to the times, because it's pretty obvious to anyone that dedicated non-portable gaming consoles simply don't make sense in today's tech market anymore. They had their time and place when technology was advancing at a much more rapid pace and they could fill a niche very well with specialized hardware, but that's not the case anymore.
Consoles are dying, their niche was overtaken by mobile gaming and everything else the PC is better at. No one cares about consoles outside exclusives.

The xbox currently is in a crossroads because while the console hardware is solid and a good price all the games are on PC with achievements, xbox live etc so people get torn between the two as getting a PC is obviously the superior option but at a higher expense. When it came to playstation in recent years it was always a fairly easy decision because it had actual exclusives but we're seeing that going away rather rapidly every year with Sony ramping up PC ports including day 1 drops like helldivers. And people were criticising Microsoft for the blurred lines they created with their console but now it seems they were right and the playstation is following their lead with this PC/console cross integration. Hence why I said Microsoft are laughing. Basically what they were criticised for before is now becoming a norm.

The console market itself is fine as PS5 is around 50 million units sold. The issue is the exclusive games are expensive to make and few and far between. People buy consoles for third party games, not exclusives these days.
