Yeah, I’m sorry but this game is overrated and honestly kind of stupid.
Like I’m supposed to be believe there are some kind of deep intricacies to the game or that it isn’t obvious well before you finish the game that he killed his wife, and that the monsters in the game are rooted in and based on his psychological traumas.
The letter-reading at the end of game reminded me of something a 15 year old would write in their diary, or in their creative writing class. It made me cringe.
Plus, the controls are clunky and shitty. The bad voice acting gets a pass, because pretty much all games back then had bad voice acting, and video games weren’t the same enterprise they are now.
But yeah, really not such a great game.

I would have to guess it's because of the fuss over the remake. I went back and replayed it myself, and also found it less good than I remembered. The specifics are different, the twist isn't obvious unless you already knew (which everyone does by now), and the ending still worked for me, though I am pretty pissed I got Water when I healed diligently and only looked at the knife once by mistake.
I'm mostly annoyed by the near-randomness of the sequence of events and being unable to figure out a serious motivation for James at any given moment. I get that it's supposed to feel kind of disjointed in service of the nightmare aesthetic, but he just comes off like kind of an idiot.
I still think it's good, but not the best and definitely overrated by today's standards. Groundbreaking in its time, but the "mature psychological video game" is now pretty well trodden territory, and this one just isn't that polished.

So you're telling me that you somehow missed the fact that James was insane and disassociated despite playing through the game at least twice. He's in a town looking for his wife that HE killed years ago but somehow doesn't remember despite the fact that her body is in the back seat and you're confused as to why some of his actions might seem out of the ordinary.

2's a fine game. Flawed to actually play but its aesthetic and narrrative somewhat make up for it. 1 and 3 are definitely better video games though, just on the point of enemy AI alone.

Just played them all for the first time in October. The games are still great, especially 1 and 2

I mirror this sentiment, because 2 grils I knew back in highschool loved RE4 Leon and James, but never played RE or SH in their lives. One of them had the GALL to call ME a POSER when I dressed Emo yet wasn't emo. Bitch.
I'd say it's more known as a mediocre horror movie today. It completely overshadowed the games and most people think Silent Hill is based on Centralia, if they're even aware of the series at all.

im 30 and i can tell you nobody liked silent hill for the mechanics. even poking around hardcore "fans" would just reveal they never played it past a certain point. i could tell you why. despite it being an attempt to modernize RE with a free flowing camera, more "standard"ish controls, and more open levels. it was six steps back in terms of game design, enemies, inventory management, level design, and even the fking controls anyways. if you had ever read up on developer post mortems. konami kinda just demanded the devs to make an RE clone in design, but they were free to do whatever with the aesthetics. that's why it is aesthetically good looking. but the game itself feels like an afterthought for some art project.
Nah everyone loved the plank. AND everyone loved remake2, which lifted a lot from this
