Something being improvable doesn't mean the original sucks. A lot of remasters frick up precisely because the devs of the original legitimately knew what they were doing better than the devs attempting to remaster it.

The devs of the original knew how to make something look good with the limited tech they had, the modern game dev doesn't even know how to make it looks good even with modern tech.

The media machine is a soulless entity that doesn't share any of your fondness or nostalgia for anything unless it can sell it to you.

Remasters are basically an admission of no novelty, it's a company knowing that people prefer old products and they "bring them back" like Coke Classic.

Why are older brands more lucrative?
It's not like those brands and IPs didn't start out like the rest of them.
Couldn't it be that those who are doing new IPs are just simply worse than those who were doing new IPs back then? Couldn't those IPs gain a following that is a better investment now precisely because the older devs actually cared about the product and the community?

I don't think you understand my point anon.
Those brands also started out and had something that made then grow into what it is now.

Let's say Crash Bandicoot (the first one for the Playstation). When that came out, Mario and Sonic were dominating the platformer genre. Yet the game was good enough that it could create it's own "brand" we recognize today alongside those other games.
Yooka-Laylee, for example, couldn't achieve the same recognition. Why is that?
Couldn't the newer devs be overall worse than their predecessors?

Why do you think hundreds of millions are poured into marketing?

Get an old IP, and you make use of those millions already used in past, plus all the marketing from consumers.

Modern devs are mostly incapable of making new IPs, so they have to churn out sequels or reboots.
Plus reboots can ride the success of the original without having to actually design something new.

Although I do like the remake for Spyro; after modding all of the character models to look like the old ones. After turning back on the original soundtrack that became my favorite way to play Spyro 1, 2, and 3.

nobody's going to shill for random garbage in a sea of steam abandonware. even at the height of demos you wouldn't have to sift through these numbers. remake something like monster bash or aoe2 on the other hand and suddenly you've got legions of soibois making youtube videos of that game they played in their childhood after getting home from a long day of getting their heads dunked in the toilet.

Unless this is a bait thread -in which case: haha nice one here's your (You)-, entertainment did in fact peak in the period depicted in picrel so much that it drastically affected youth suicide rates.
Sure, in a purely graphical point of view games made nowadays are prettier, however that would be an awfully naive way to look at entertainment as a whole.
    >Games/movies/books then were something people actually looked forward to, as in actively anticipated its release
    >The hype for new games were so big that street-long lines formed infront of game/book stores for big releases and at cinemas too
    >New IPs were the standard and not the odd-one-out
    >Corporate/management control in projects were at an all time low in the entertainment industry and experimentation was at an all time high
    >the console wars were actually positive in competition as all sides genuinely tried to make the absolute best games/consoles they could in order to compete
    >every single year, insanely large improvements were done in EVERY aspect of video games and movies (most notably in graphical fidelity)
    >Game journalism was at it's peak, as the journalists were actually honest most of the time
I could go on and on. The difference is so ridiculously big that the only ones who doesn't understand this are those who didn't experience this period.

You're still young, you'll understand eventually why older games were better.
'93-'06 was the peak of video games - plain and simple. That's not something only older people cling onto, it's a logical conclusion that anyone will reach, given enough experience with games.
I'm not too worried about "converting" you zoomers because it's only a matter of time before you understand.

nobody actually plays old games. when they say old games they mean rpgs like morrowind or deus ex, not interactive fiction and adventure games.

Fun fact anon, when people say statements like
        >nobody actually plays old games.
They don't mean there is quite literally zero people that play old games. They mean the vastvast majority of people don't, and the only ones that do are the outliers that exist in basically every statistic.

He's right. Nobody is booting up their NES to play Swords and Serpents in 2024.

there is nothing more normal in the world than pretending like you play atari 2600 games to try to make a point. you are trying to oppress/bully the other person out of the conversation but you only have a position of weakness and lies to come from.

your behavior is extremely animalistic and basic human nature. you are a bog-standard person, and boring. you are normal.

Obviously but to be fair, I have seen posts in nuGanker that are claiming just that. So it's now a bit difficult to decide who is moronic (nobody = actually nobody) and who is not (nobody = very few people).
This wouldn't be the most idiotic take I have seen here.

you cannot imagine the excitement of being part of the community of games like quake, uo, everquest, completely new forms of entertainment springing up, with things like modding, tournaments, conventions and fan sites all coming into being

you don't participate in gaming in any way, you just "play"

FF 7 wasn't good enough to not warrant hundred millions in marketing. Think about that.

ff7 did not have "hundred millions" in marketing and it was by far the most extnesively marketed/only extensively marketed game at that time

          >Pixel hunting is older than you
I'm much older than most pixels anyone sees these days. I didn't have websites for help. I had to ask friends at school and they didn't know either. Games were fricking mysteries and they took months of your life and even then some of them beat you. It wasn't actually that great to be honest, there were no difficulty settings. But it's better than walking through a game following a line on the ground because it's a fricking race. It's almost impossible to explain for someone today. I love modern graphics and sound don't get me wrong. I'm just sad that for games to be hard now it's just parry timing. Each to their own.
