I personally am not sure 4's specific approach to stylization was what the series wanted, but I do feel it was closer to the mark than 5's actual realism. I wonder how much of it was just relative unfamiliarity with using RE engine for anything else by that point; considering how SF6 turned out though, honestly it might be for the best that they did what they did.

Having ultimately conceded the point though, I will just say one or two things: you don't have to photograph to make a realistic image, you can make a painting from scratch designed to look strictly lifelike. Similarly, assets can be created from scratch to be lifelike even without just being copypasted from real life.
That said, I guess it is pretty ignorant to act as if it needs to be cel-shaded or have outright exaggerated cartoon/anime features to be "stylized," and even if the goal were for it to be roughly lifelike, a decent team would be making the necessary precautions to accommodate technology that wasn't really ready for photorealism, so in other words stylizing it. Points taken.

"Realistic" 6th gen games are in a weird position in which, despite the quantum leap from 5th gen, the graphics still had a way to go before reaching photorealism, so there's an impressionistic nature to them which makes them inherently stylized. DMC 1-3 technically were "realistic" for their time but since even that still accommodated their subject matter.
I personally am not sure 4's specific approach to stylization was what the series wanted, but I do feel it was closer to the mark than 5's actual realism. I wonder how much of it was just relative unfamiliarity with using RE engine for anything else by that point; considering how SF6 turned out though, honestly it might be for the best that they did what they did.

Generally I like how 5 plays but it bothers me to know end that 80% of cutscenes are just someone flying through the air before they job to a boss with slow motion slapped on it in the middle. 5 cinamatics just feel uncreative and bland compared to 3 and even 4 despite how overly anime those could be.
