That ladder model looks like trash. Like plywood stapled together. If playtesters missed it, that's probably why. Just put in a metal ladder and people will know "this can fricking hold my weight and was designed to do so."

A metal ladder will also stand out more in the seemingly mineshaft looking environment. Provided they don't let their art monkeys go full moron and dip it in copious amounts of flith and grime.

They tested the games without yellow paint and the players were missing everything and got lost. Some anon from here thought he is better than the moronic test groups and used a mod to remove the yellow paint and had to admit he was wrong because he was missing everything as well. All the devs have to do is add an npc with a yellow paint bucket in somewhere to justify it better.

That's a failure in visual design.

            Anonymous

I mean, with today's graphics trying to look as realistic as possible, you're on a tight rope balancing act between visual design for gameplay, and visual design for realism. If you go too realistic and don't signpost anything, the game can become easy to get lost in. If you signpost everything, it's a frickin video game and the point of the realistic visuals clash even harder with the gameplay intent. People act like they'd ace these sorts of things, but the reality is without firmly established rules of what you can or can't interact with that remain consistent, signposting is necessary at a compromise to reality.

              Anonymous

There are better ways to address this. Like someone else said, use metal ladders to indicate ones you can climb or broken ones for those you can't. Unbreakable boxes can be braced with metal, light sources and proper camera orientation can indicate direction, rotting wood and solid wood to suggest what windows can be broken, etc.

It breaks immersion more if your brain has to actively focus on what can and what cannot be used.

For many, many reasons beyond just this shit, frankly. The industry is in such a stagnated arms race to the top of the graphics pile that games have suffered hard for it, as have the price points of viable computer builds for playing said games.

                >The industry is in such a stagnated arms race to the top of the graphics pile
it's the opposite actually. The tech behind graphics is advancing far faster than these huge multi-year international billion dollar games can keep up with.
There hasn't been a period of stagnation, or calm as I prefer, where people can master the tools provided and instead the hot new shit is jammed in by people who are still learning.

                Anonymous

I see where you're coming from. I guess a stagnation in my perspective is probably more along the lines of how we have shifted so much in the past couple generations, with Unreal Engine 5 being a whole different beast from 3 as one example, but many games still don't really look leaps and bounds above PS4 launch titles without direct comparisons, and after a point you reach the semantics like resolution and framerate rather than the fidelity. But even then that's all picking hairs since there's still a marked improvement unlike what some people try to proclaim.

                Anonymous

I personally think the biggest issue is that not enough artists are actually good artists.
Even with very basic tools, or in this case graphics you can still make striking and good looking images. The task of bringing everything together, composing a look, is beyond the skills or even just natural talent of too much people.
12k textures, 1:1 facescans, 400trillion polys means nothing if you just don't have the 'eye' to make everything come together.

You're right, it does stand out. But the game, even if it has a realistic style, still isn't actually particularly realistic, so obvious contrivances for the sake of gameplay aren't jarring. Chasing realism was never going to end well, but there was a long enough period where it was still abstracted enough that it worked. That's no longer the case.

Realism is just one of many methods of visually portraying something. Many games have benefited from it.
Telling a whole method to "go frick itself" is foolish. It's like being an art connoisseur but saying "FRICK OIL PAINTINGS!"

Because modern level designers have to fill up every unused inch of an area with random props, debris, and greeble to up the polycount and convince normies that the game looks “next-gen.” Since many of these random assets thrown in by environment artists are indiscernible from things that are actually meant to be interacted with, level designers take the lazy approach and just color code the things that are useful. Your gamer instinct might have you try all the ladders in the room (and rightfully so), but due to poor design only the highlighted one will actually lead anywhere.

Sorry, but that's just video games. In the 90's either it was trial and error, or you had big ass arrows and interaction prompts telling you what to do. In the 00's onwards, it's marking what players can interact with or button prompts. It's entirely up to art designers as to whether the interactions are subtle or blatantly signposted. It's like b***hing about Uncharted 1 having suspicious waist-high ruin walls and crate boxes everywhere for an inevitable firefight, alongside having brighter edges for what you could climb in platforming sequences.

What purpose does the yellow paint serve? I mean what property of yellow indicates "climable" that being a ladder does not?

      Anonymous

The bright color causes the player to notice the item. Its a way of telling the player "you can use this thing" without giving it a glowing outline or having a floating arrow pointing at it. Bright yellow just happens to be good at being visible compared to other colors.

        Anonymous

Glowing outline would be better tbh. KH3 did it to indicate flowmotion walls. Makes it clear that it's interactible and feels more like UI than part of the game world. I still used a mod to turn off all the wall glows and had no problems other than a bit of trouble finding one chest in Frozen, but that was more because Frozen is a shit world consisting entirely of samey mountains.

Problem is that a lot of these games are filled with objects that can't be interacted with. Visual clutter, really. So the player has no way of knowing whether something is interactive or not without trying to engage with the object. Imagine there are 10 ladders in a game level and only 1 is interactive. Let's say the player tries to engage with a few and nothing happens. Without yellow paint indicating that ladder #10 is interactive he'd never know because at that point he'd have given up trying to interact with ladders.

I have a better idea. Design your game better so that you can't arbitrarily interact with some objects and not others of the same variety. Don't have ladders if you can't climb them. Don't have a mechanic where you can climb walls but only some selected walls for some reason. Don't have doors you can't interact with, at least let the player walk up and try the handle even if it's permanently locked. And find a better way to stash loot, don't just hide it in wooden crates you have to smash in any game that's supposed to be remotely realistic. Leave that for cartoony platform games.

These are the problems, lazy design choices that lead to yellow paint being necessary in the first place.

pillars of light are video gamey visual cues. yellow paint is an visual signal that attempts to maintain a game's immersive elements but it ends up being the opposite because it suggests that someone in the game's setting went around painting everything

I still don't understand why they went with yellow ladders and crates in Resident Evil. Why not have bright blood red handprints on ladders and crates? Makes much more sense in the setting for somebody with bloodied hands to use a ladder or for blood to splatter on a crate. And it's still a bright colour that attracts peoples attention. And there's already blood in the game, so it's not like it was a censorship problem.

Because yellow stands out more and is not a common color. Red is a color used as a warning. It would tell players not to break the barrels or climb the ladder because it would be dangerous.

adventure games actually did used to get mocked in magazines if they didn't have at least a couple of mean or obscure puzzles to bang your head against. there was a lot of pressure to be exactly what the stereotype is

i dunno if it was secretly a strategy to sell mags; from what i remember strategy magazines as opposed to regular review mags were mostly a later thing (lucasarts eventually more or less changed that part of the culture by marketing themselves as adventure games but not sadistic).
i think it was just a different market since we didn't have 1000 new games released a month back then. adventure games were almost like the open world games of their time; a setting you could dick around in (confused) for weeks and beating them too soon ruined it

        it was that or solitaire

actually now that I think of it there weren't really strategy magazines, but they did sell hint books

My point still stands because of four reasons.
              1. The majority of the Caches are still hidden away
              2. This is during a firefight so it makes sense to have it out in the open when you are running around gunning enemies and not paying attention to the actual environment.
              3. These are optional, you don't need to participate with these caches at all in the entire game, you aren't impeded from completing the game because you didn't grab the cache.
              4. Not to mention, that Lambda spray has actual lore Significance.
Tell me, what Lore Significance does having Yellow paint on random bits of jutted out rock, crates, ladders, windows, explosive barrels, have?

The party gets stuck in a realm that is sealed off from the rest of the world so the big bad can't escape it.
Not even the souls of the dead can escape the bubble. They continually get reborn as new children.

I don't think general audiences are inherently terrible at games; they just eat up whatever you give them. when most of what the mainstream gets is moron games then players themselves will become moronic.

old mainstream arcade, console and pc games in the past could be way harder and require more effort to get good at. freaking pac-man was a turbo-normie game and it required way more understanding & mastery than most games now.

I do wonder if this is part of a greater thing than just vidya.
That with the advent of handheld GPS telling us where to go people stop just naturally building maps in their head and storing landmarks to orient themselves.
There's no need to know how to navigate yourself anymore so the basic skill of having an internal map is not developing.

    The sign of shit design
It usually means there are a ton of useless objects in the game which lead to player confusion given they look the same as interactive objects.
This is fixed by either making the game more interactive and fun (hard to do, few AAA games do this nowadays) or by removing useless clutter on screen (devs are unwilling to do this since clutter is also le detail le graphics and they'd never scale that down).

Yeah you're right. The devs just need to add more fun, it's literally that easy.

Game being more interactive means game is more engaging which means game is more fun(tm) (for me anyway)

Ranni's ending is not only barely hidden, but you have Rodgier's quest from the beggining of the game pushing you toward it.

        Anonymous

...it's not a puzzle. That's how you're supposed to proceed, but that guy played it like an old NES game by jumping and shooting horizontally instead of aiming and missing a shot.

        Anonymous

The zoomer is intentionally placed there so you have a moment of discovery. it's a very metroid/oldschool nintendo/capcom thing to do

Obviously a few people will miss it but they can't progress so they'll just reach a short mini-version of the "run everywhere and try everything" mode of metroid.
It's a good example of why developers shouldn't be afraid of that, actually. When players get lost or confused it might be excruciating to watch them stumble around in a playtest session, but they're engaged and have basically created a puzzle for themselves that they'll get a little dopamine for eventually solving.

The design job is in rounding off the rough edges and controlling the frequency and extent of those situations so it's not a showstopper.
Removing all possibility for a sense of discovery or personal agency so the game plays itself on autopilot isn't the answer.

        Anonymous

Even if not. There is a room prior to this segment where the game introduces breakable blocks and where you have to break blocks to proceed.
So even if you don't miss a shot. The fact that the room is just a dead end with a corridor proceeding forwards just above the one tile ceiling. Should clue you in even if you didn't stumble upon it.

Labor-intensive design: you use innate human characteristics (present in even the most moronic) to create intuitive environments where people can explore satisfactorily without outside help.
Lazy design: you paint things yellow

The yellow paint shows the problem with modern industry, it is extremely lazy. I don't know why, maybe modern food makes people lethargic, or maybe making games is so complex that if people don't always choose the path of least effort, the game will never get finished.
