Let me guess, they should use a generic fantasy world or medieval western instead?

        >nations celebrating their culture and history is... le bad
Great post, Chaim. I suppose they should make art celebrating Black person mutt culture instead. Black lives matter, amirite?

No I complain that most of their stories are based on chinese history or literature with little outside influence and while that's not bad per se and I do enjoy some Wuxia here and there, a lot of their media seems to be stuck in that setting. To be fair, I also hate that on japanese people and their 500th usage of Edo era or similar, western doing another DnD/Tolkiend erivative fantasy setting or western. Just kidding there isn't much games about cowboys besides RDR2 and West of Loathing.

But even then I can find other stuff beyond that. Most Chinese media seems to be incestual, self fellating themselves without much introspection. That it frustrates me because I think these foreign influences could improve their work thenfold. This isn't a "oh this needs a black guy" but getting inspiration from other cultures, a different philosophy to have them clash with yours, etc.
I'm also not saying that if it's chinese focused it's gonna be bad. Played Wandering sword recently I was thoroughly surprised with how comeptent and enjoyable it was. Also got +100h in Gunfire reborn.

We've been traumatized by weebs and their obsession with foreign stuff but we've also seen westaboo japanese artist are the best there.

Your complaining about China focusing too much on their own culture without any "outside influence" and being too "self-fellating" (as opposed to self-loathing) tells me all I need to know about you.

          >trying to talk about art with Ganker
You can try anon, but the average Gankertard has a reaction brain that only acts in contradiction with what's written on screen, no unique thought can come out of that.
It never occured to the repliers that every single franchise fellated on this board is a product of cultural mix. Does Elden Ring happens in Japan? Does SMT only use Japanese demons? Do you only eat waffles in BG3?
In Final Fantasy it's not just fantasy Japan. Is Wuxia anything but China with magical shit?
There's a reason why Banner of the Maid had a ton of threads but random Chinese fantasy rpg #634 doesn't.

You got what I was trying to say. FROM games are a great example of it too. Besides Sekiro, none is really japanese based, yet the main themes in every souls is hugely japanese (the Kegare I think it was called), they jsut try to convey that through other asthetics and concepts which results in this unique portrayal.

Zelda, Dragon Quest, Final Fantasy, Monster Hunter, SMT among many others, none are based on japan as a setting (except the obvious cases like MH Rise or Portable 3rd) but they're all undenyable japanese works.
That's what I mean, I wanna see stuff that is clearly chinese but inspired and playing with themes that aren't just chinese, so I can better udnerstand and appreciate said chinese themes. Otherwise, it just feels like a father telling you to obey because he's the father anf not because fatehr really knows better.

If near future/alt.history counts, Girls Frontline/Reverse Collapse (non-gacha, singleplayer full game) lore nuked China that pretty much changed the state of the world from okay to really bad. Main characters in RC are Antarcticans and the bad guys/opposing faction are Euro/Russian. Most of the game happens in Caucasus mountains and even in Girl's Frontline there's little china-wank going on outside of the state-mandated Chinese characters

            Anonymous

Guess you're right but the example moving away from chinese wank into japanese gacha anime coomer stuff doesn't work in it's favor.

Gacha is extremely frustrating in general because it inherently harms the game and forces changes in favor of the abusive gacha practises rather than improve or expand the world. We can't have itneresting characters because they all gotta be bawds or twinks, no proper hierarchy because you (the MC) has to be some middle age / young adult boring ass to self insert and create a harem, the the setting and story fall apart or don't work because it's hard for me to believe all this happens and works because of said coomer teenage bawds.

Hard for me to dig something so "bad" or dystopic while also presenting pristine faced underage girls as the norm. Also I can't stand all the noise and clutter Gacha artworks have.

              Anonymous

Gacha severely limits what you can do in favor of pandering to whale/dolphin players. As with how Girls Frontline does that it kind of throws the pandering/harem aspect out of the window to go deep into a political-thriller kind of story and only dealing with a smaller cast of relevant characters, both playable and non-playable (main story at least. Side stories are pandering like skin stories, seasonal events and avoids doing lore-heavy stuff unless its central to the cahracter etc.) The MC/SKK character eventually stops being a silent/self-insert protagonist with agency of his own, even going as far as being fully voiced in the sequel (https://youtu.be/7X4oGOwIStI).

But if you don't really like gacha-pandering, Reverse Collapse is non-gacha.

Don't deny the quality of everything else can be good or even great. Multidisciplinary projects are like that.
But you also, cohesion and verisimilitude are a thing. That said, I am aware that it's kind of both a biased and objectively flawed thing. Suspension of disbelief relies a lot on the user's knowledge and life experience. Gachas are easy to digest when you're dumb or a teenager as your lack of life experience makes it more enjoyable. For me, despite enjoying the political drama, it all falls apart when it's delivered through all these little girls with high pitched voice. Can't dealw ith how they jump between super serious and depressing stuff and "Yumi wants a Hamburguer NOW òwó" stuff.

Will say I ain't trying to paint me as some super IQ or mature dude, but more that I'll likely am not part of the target audience. But just because I find tomboys or milfs super hot, doesn't mean I think Lord of the rings or Warhammer 40k would improve by turning 90% of the cast into them. In fact, I'd think both would lose a lot of that verisimilitude that makes these stories or worlds so endearing.

I'm accustomed to anime BS in the first place so its not really much a big deal for me when quirky characters are being quirky. Its kind of an acquired taste. Going back to Girls Frontline, the main cast is considerably grounded with only SOPMOD II being the most quirky of all (genki-murder puppy archetype), even more so with human NPCs. Reverse Collapse is pretty much everything that made Girls Frontline beloved but without the limitations gacha imposes, so there's that for a start.

                >Its kind of an acquired taste.
It's one I lost too. Used to be a lot into anime and stuff, specially isekai. Now I can't stand anime things at all because I keep seeing the same patterns and mouthbreathing tier writting/themes. Don't condone it either besides when it comes to my enjoyment.
It's a shame because I see a lot of stuff that looks good but then I start to play or read and can't stand being threated like a moron.

But that's one of the strengths of it, that all the uwu kawaii anime girls are literally powerless pawns and goons while all the actual power holders are old white men as it should be.

Sure, but as said, because I'm not looking to coom or fullfill my power fantasies, this discrepancy works against my enjoyment ratehr than in favor.

My annoyance with Chinese content is the overwhelming majority is one of four things.
          >Wuxia
          >Xianxia
          >Journey to the West
          >Romance of the Three Kingdoms
It's almost never one of these four things and they adhere to the tropes of every single one like a dog with a bone. RotTK especially since they all feel like reskins. JttW is at least done in different ways most of the time but holy moly do they refuse to let go of these four things. It's like if every single Japanese game revolved around the Edo period or Sengoku period. There's a lot of those, but it's like maybe 20% of what Japan does in terms of entertainment and at best they reference it then move on. With China it's like they need the story to revolve around one of these four or they'll die.

I still disagree, those 4 categories is just the chinese version of fantasy with subgenres like medieval/low/high and if your gonna lump them all into that I'd like to see proof, from what I see it's about half on steam with lots of their old games that fit your criteria stuck being cn only and were made before and not on steam

                >being cn only
Yes. You're simply looking at the translated games when I'm speaking as a whole of the Chinese game market. For every one Genshin Impact you have three dozen stereotypical Chinese games that feel like asset flips. There's also a good list of games that cover both Chinese and English translated games that aren't all what I stated.
                https://store.steampowered.com/curator/32768202-Games-from-China-and-Taiwan/#browse

The majority of what we get in English pass muster and aren't all repeats. Go look at the browser games of China which are the vast majority of their gaming library and you'll see it's nothing but that. We're starting to see more and more Chinese indie developers making actual games, but come on now. Gujian is the sort of thing you typically see from untranslated titles which is why it's surprising 3 of all things got localized.

                >those 4 categories is just the chinese version of fantasy with subgenres like medieval/low/high
Not really, 2 of those are stories. I wouldn't call "jurney to the west" a setting or genre because it's a story people simply plays around where Sun wukong is always the main character and fights with a big stick. That's way more restrictive to the setting than "medieval fantasy china"

It'd be like saying most medieval fantasy western are based on Dante's inferno descend to hell or Odysseus journey with an MC that's always a variation of Dante or Oddysseus.
And as the first post stated, it's less what it's Wuxia or Journey to the west and more that that's all there is. That's it's just Wuxia with chinese people one and only.
Even japanese games that suck wiener of muh feudal edo era usually have at least some foreign character to spice things up or as the bad guys.

But it really is that I'd like to see more traditional chinese stuff itneracting with other styles and sensitivities to reinforce their own identity.

RoTK can be considered as Historical Fantasy at this point, so many versions rewritten over centuries has pretty much made that specific time period a legend over there, I very much doubt even the strongest chinaman at the time was able to do the feats written in the legend

JtTW is like a fable right? Same thing with fairy tales that are immerse in fantasy filled with legends and mysteries built from the culture who told it

Again it all comes down to their version of fantasy which is flavored by their own culture which makes it unique to them

The thing is that their version of fantasy is what they cling to. It's like if 90% of the games that came out of America were expies of The Great Gatsby or The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, or 90% of the games from Britain were expies of Robin Hood and King Arthur. It's all well and good if you want to talk about local legends or stories and translate them to a different medium, or maybe do a different take on it, but don't make that your main focus.

                Basic example.

Well let them have what they want, nationalism may be a foreign concept to westeners but under the CCP rule they've managed to keep that going even in the age of the internet, who else but them are gonna make these kinds of games as the west also keeps rehashing/retelling/remaking all your WWII shooters, LoTR spin offs and various fairy tales. Those games are made for the domestic market.

                >who else but them are gonna make these kinds of games as the west also keeps rehashing/retelling/remaking all your WWII shooters, LoTR spin offs and various fairy tales.
That's exactly what they do too, and to answer the question...everyone. That's kinda the point. Japan makes a lot of west inspired media, both with influence of fully western. The west does too but it's usually worse as they are more superficial.
Imo the lack of chinese influence otuside china is precisely a consequence of their lack of will to interact and engage with the rest of the world beyond abusing it. That if China had been more open from the start, non-chinese people would make chinese based media and vice-versa.

                >Those games are made for the domestic market.
And given how most of the biggest games are those who are not that chinese inspired, but also the interest in foreign countries about chinese stuff like Black king Wukong or Wo Long, there is a lot of market for chinese setting in the west and a lot of market for foreign stuff in china.

Hell, don't egt why the nationalism take is said as a positive here, when the main reason we're seeing this improvement of quality in chinese media is that the itnernet became too prominent for the CCP to hide it from their people and had to start aknowledging the existence of the outside world.

It'll take time but these days chink devs are just mix and matching game mechanics they like together to form a different but similar thing. On the nationalism thing, the CCP directly supports the further growth of chinese cultures and values thus promoting nationalism and doesn't bat an eye to games that play along but will stop you dead on if you don't and inderectly leading devs to pander to the domestic audience as suppose to making western games that have different values/making china look bad directly or inderectly and may have your game dear and delisted

This is what pisses me off the most. They really have the skills to pull of great games, but it's like they put 0 though in it. They see mechancis or ideas and glue them with ducktape, and chase trends too hard. And as you showed, the CCP sadly wienerblocks creativity a bit and encourages "we have X at home" too much.

But things are getting better and hopefully one day the itnernet will be too big and widespread for the CCP to stop it and chinese people will realise nationalism is stupid if you don't understand why and how it's better than others ratehr than blind belief.

You mean the thing they only started chasing because Genshin proved itself and even then it's only been what, Tower of Fantasy and Wuthering Waves?

The Chinese gaming issue is also seen in Korea where they can seemingly only make grindy MMOs, browser games, or gacha games rather than good standalone games. Occasionally you get that really short FPS game or Stellar Blade, but overall you have to deal with more trash than any other country when it comes to their games and with China there's more hoops to jump through because of their love of their own stories and settings and getting them to diverge from those is like pulling teeth. Some do it, but the vast majority are indies where the game is undercooked in some way, and the games that do get big budgets are Black Myth: Wukong. Keep in mind Genshin Impact was a Hail Mary from Mihoyo because it went against the grain of what the Chinese market does.

Korea has like 20 times less people, they're not comparable. Also, Genshin wen't more against the grain of Japan's market than China's, and is mostly popular because of preexisting weebs rather than it being good.

Then your "annoyance" is invalid and auto-discarded. Just another typical superficial bias.
There are already thousands of Chinese games on Steam, not to mention on other platforms, but maybe like only 4 or 5 games are based on Journey to The West, which is partially why Black Myth makes so many people exciting, because there is barely any game actually based on JTTW, even Black Myth is not totally based on JTTW. Similar situation goes to RoTK, too. Majority of 3K games in global market are made by Japanese, no Chinese. Most Chinese 3K games are only in the Chinese market for Chinese audiences mainly.

There are indeed plenty of Wuxia and Xianxia games, but obviously still not enough, far from enough because true 3A quality big budget Wuxia/Xianxia games are all still in development, not in current market. Besides, comparing to the cliche Western themes such as Greek myth, muh vikings, muh knights, or cliche Japanese samurai, which were all done for over 6 Gorzillions times already, these Chinese themes are still like little babies.

And I can easily find many Chinese games that are not belonging to the four categories you mentioned,

These are just the most popular games people deemed worthy of putting on Wikipedia. Three of them are from Japan that I could tell.
If I just use Steam as an example:
              https://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=西游记&ndl=1
80 titles, 2 of which are demos, 6 of of which are add-ons. Take off 10 for false positives.
              >which is partially why Black Myth makes so many people exciting
People are excited for Black Myth because it's a AAA game out of China, not because it's Wukong. What in the world have you been reading that makes you think it's because it's the adaptation and not the circumstance around the adaptation?

So you’re proving I’m right? Did you actually investigate the lists you posted?
Only 20 games here, and at least 8 of them are NOT Chinese(nor Taiwanese), the oldest ones even dated back to 1984, are you fricking kidding me? There are thousands of Chinese game in the market already, but only 12 to 20 games in 30 years? That’s “a lot” and “majority” to you? What’s the ratio of 12 out of thousands? Can you count?

                >If I just use Steam as an example:https://store.steampowered.com/search/?term=西游记&ndl=1
Again did you really see the list you posted? Can you really Chinese? I didn’t read the whole list but I instantly saw at least 10 games are NOT Journey to the West(西遊記) in the first 20 games I browsed. Do you actually think just because you typed “西遊記” on Steam, so all you get are 西遊記 games? Are your moronic or this is your first time using Steam and internet? Who do you think you can fool with?

These two curators combined counting about over 700 Chinese games on Steam.
Why don’t you go search how many of them are actually JTTW西遊記 games?
                https://store.steampowered.com/curator/32815792-A-Certain-Powerful-Country/
                https://store.steampowered.com/curator/32768202-Games-from-China-and-Taiwan/

It's also because of Wukong. I read Chinese webs because I can read Chinese and I'm Chinese from Taiwan. Even on Steam forum, there are also Chinese praising Wukong.

                >Except for every God of War you have like 500+ games that aren't God of War.
And there are also over 500+ games aren't Wukong, your own lists disprove your argument, frickwat.

                >Did you actually investigate the lists you posted?
Yes, I even said it's a small curated list with several being from Japan.
                >but I instantly saw at least 10 games are NOT Journey to the West
Did you just not read my post at all? I said remove 10 or so titles for false positives.
                >It's also because of Wukong.
Not in the west. In the west it's because it's an AAA game out of China which isn't a thing that happens. The people here who care that it's Wukong are a small minority. The main reason people care is because it's a Chinese AAA game when that's a market that never releases anything above shovelware-tier low budget indies.
                >your own lists disprove your argument
Your lists add every single game under the sun from China and Taiwan. You're also lumping Taiwanese games with Chinese games as if you're the same country. But fine, if you want to be correct then your list is mostly low budget VNs and simulators that have nothing to do with anything specific. I am still going to say that I dislike Chinese games for the Wuxia/Xianxia, JttW, and RotTK repetition that isn't even remotely the same as western fantasies in western markets. I also don't know why you're exclusively focusing on Steam for what you say, because even at GDC the people localizing Chinese games admit they have to wade through a bunch of stuff that's one of those four subjects or localize them. "An Introduction to Chinese Browser Game Design" is one example.

at least 4/5 games on your list are NOT 西遊記.

                >Not in the west.

this is true anywhere. Wukong isn't even the main character of Journey to the West though, which is how you can tell people that talk about it have never read it. It's like hearing people talk about Bible characters even though it's obvious they've never read the Bible (Journey to the West is also about as long as the entire Bible too). He's like a cultural symbol at this point, disconnected from the plot, even though he's the chinese version of Hanuman or something like that.

I hate female design in chinese and korean stuff so much man. All the girls look the same and are the same archetypes. They're so distracting and stand out too much. Men are allowed to have vaeriety but all womena re the samle delicate, femenine porcelain bimbo. Make Yuffie from FF7 or Rebecca from RE 1.80m tall and that's the most extreme cases of unconventional female character you'll find in chinese media.

huh, the UI threw me off. Well that's good to hear, gonna put it on my wishlist and see if I can egt it on sale. Thanks for the recomendation.

I really enjoy when cultures outside of a certain country try to take on a setting steeply rooted in that country's history
It's not something you see often enough

Was saying more outsider influences/inspirations to reinforce your own. You can still make it about china and such, it's the mindset, writting and takes that make me raise an eyebrow. It's the design pricniple of research and study, even on paths you know won't take. Think of it as asking 2 designers to make a board game. The first will make prototypes, test it on people, play board games of all genres to get ideas and then try different stuff for their own game until something new pops up. The other looks up "how to make a board game" on the internet and follows the guyides while applying his own ideas. Both will deliver a board game that likely works and is playable, but one will be more surprising and enjoyable because it did try to grow beyond the known standards.

And I do love when a culture has a take on a compeltly different one, ie japanese devs making a fully western game, but that's a fun exception than soemthing that should be constant.

          TL;DR
All coutnries fellate themselves, but it's easy to find stuff based on external cultures in america and japan but specially europe and France. IT is very hard to find media in chinese that isn't set in china, not-china! but specially that introduces or talks about themes and concepts not part of traditional chinese culture.

It's extra fun if you know the wuxia/xianxia tropes. Like the Juuli tribe plot where the brother made his sister ill on purpose because he wants to use her body as a cultivation ingredient after she's sacrificed

Not him, but nitrogen content determines the quality of fertilizer. Bird shit is pound for pound the best, but hard to get a lot of it, so large herbivores are the next best thing. Carnivore shit is low in nitrogen, and thus makes poor fertilizer. Better than nothing though.

Wandering Sword has the same systems in play but in a JRPG format with limited freedom, you could also play the game that most directly inspires it Ho Tu Lo Shu: The Book of Dragons as it's got a edited MTL translation in the workshop, and last if you want the latest gem you could try your luck and use Xunity Autotranslator on this

china would be better if it wasn't china

For me the issue is the presentation, specially with HUDs or itnerface elements. I don't know why, but there's something in how most chinese games look that makes them feel very cheap and half assed. As if by the time they found the artstyle they wanted to go for they run out of time and had to quickly wrap it all up. As if the people making interface elements never saw or talked with the rest of the devs.
Reminds me of those WoW addons that would change the interface to give "more and clearer info" and instead turn everything into a mess.

It feels like Epic games, Obsidian or Bethesda games: it's not like I think you're not capable of doing great stuff, I know for a fact you can. It is that it won't happen as often as it should as long as you keep that philosophy towards game making (or anythign else, really)

        Anonymous

        >most chinese games look that makes them feel very cheap and half assed.
Its the words. All games get fricked hard once you translate chinese idioms to words. My own canon is that 3/4 games dont get a translation due to the headache that is making words fit the UI properly

          Anonymous

I wouldn't say it's just the words because often it's the itnerface design itself that gives me that, but I hadn't considered that and it is true the text looks really weird.
How come this doesn't happen with japanese games? Or is it simply that they are used to have extra tools to accomodate other languages and is less noticeable?

            Anonymous

Ignoring all "translation of [JP game] is shit" threads

              Anonymous

We're not talking about translation quality, but that the localization does not adapt the text size/grammar to the interface that was designed for a more bulky typeface language that can also be easily read vertically.

It's more grounded with a focus on the human realm, closer to a witcher 3 I'd say. I really liked S&F7 for its graphics and characters but Gujian has more soul. The combat is pretty spammy and repetitive but I liked following the wienery MC.

Mandarin Chinese vidya will be poorly translated due to skill issues for the next 10-15 years, after which point the loooooooooooooocalizers will start to have their way with it.

I want to check out some of their old JRPGs. The settings don't really bother me. Its not really my jam, but its no different than the amount of WW2 strategy games that keep getting released.
