Because nothing lasts forever under the moon.
"Oh no, heavier-than-air vehicles are impossible."
"Cavalry is viable against machine guns."
And if you want to talk about laws of physics, try to explain viability of "space fighter".
We can't predict what the future holds, and right now an exoskeleton with a jetpack would be much more useful than a tank. However, we don't have the capacity to fill that niche.

If we could have built Armored Core, we would have used it yesterday. Something that can fly under radar, take off and land instantly, and take a few hits. It just so happens that feet are the best landing gear.

                >I don't know what point you're trying to make by bringing up something that's even more moronic, but okay.
It makes all space trucking games just as unrealistic as mecha games, pure wish fulfilment, and it's not a bad thing. Just like very popular "tank-on-tank" genre.
Otherwise all we have is drones and artillery, and everything more is a copping zone.

In logistic, maybe. US forces try to fit them in every hole, just because the military wants to use their big shiny toy. They are completely useless if the opponent has any form of parity. They're only useful in police operations.

At the end of the day, we can't predict the future even in the short term, an army can keep something completely useless in service for decades (A-10) and will use the weapon long after it is completely obsolete.

Not that anon but mechs, or at the very least something with manipulators like how mechs have arms, is an incredibly practical device that adds more staying power to your fighting force. Your tank/helicopter/jet/humvee run out of ammo and it's time to head back to the base. Your giga armed vehicle runs out of ammo and it can start using the gun as a club, or chuck it as a projectile weapon, or start uprooting trees to chuck as projectile weapons. That means the ammo it started out with is one less factor that determines whether it stays in the field or goes back to HQ.

Considering the only "real" source we have for mech maintenance costs are fees from videogames where cost is based on HP lost + solid ammunition spent, it can be anywhere between absoluitely free and more than a village worth of arms and a legs. I wouldn't really be talking about maintenance costs for the fictional vehicles.

Besides, expensive maintenance costs is a military staple. The training and maintenance cost for an Abrams tank can top up at $10 million bucks per tank, according to google.

My guy, we have vehicles with rudimentary "not for chucking" limbs in the form of cranes, excavators, and even that thing that uproots trees to feed into those moving sawmills that they use in rainforests. None of those bankrupt the companies that employ them.
You'll have to explain the math you did where these devices that these companies use go from "we can use these in our company and earn profits" to "holy shit it's bankrupting a whole country" just because some engineers turned it into a trebuchet that can also grab stuff.

But if we did that you'd have to concede that there are situations where "insulting your intelligence" is a necessity, and I wouldn't want to do that. You'll have to piece the puzzle together on your own. It'll be more rewarding that way.

There is absolutely no scenario in which insulting the audience's intelligence is justified.

And yet you're providing a scenario right now. You want all the puzzle solving removed from the responses provided to you because you couldn't figure out how the replies you received answered your question.

I don't want to solve some imaginary puzzle. I want you to tell me why you fricktarded sheep are okay with a work of fiction treating you like babies jingling keys in front of your faces.

I'm replying to him purely because it's funny to make him screech. Nothing more, nothing less.

The fact that you think it's imaginary when you've been told countless times that it isn't does little to disprove that there are situations wherein your intelligence needs insulting.

In other words, it's to this threads amusement and mirth that you, Mr. "Grr you shouldn't like things insulting your intelligence" are now begging to have your intelligence insulted by asking to be spoonfed the answer.
So nah. figure it out by yourself and we'll keep laughing each time you say "no you didn't answer it, now answer me".

Because I'm not so emotionally fragile like you to confuse my feelings for reason and take fictional universes as an affront to my very being to the point of argument if it acts as an entertaining means of framing a world and story in a genre of video game I like.

Again, fiction is not an excuse to depict stupid shit. That is straight up misinformation, and that's immoral, dammit.

I understand just fine moron kun. You asked us why people always respond with how something is fun, and bemoaning your perceived insult to our collective intelligence. You've been provided answers designed to not insult your intelligence, but the meaning behind them continues to elude you, as though we need to insult what intelligence you claim to have by dumbing things down to where an infant can understand.

Idk, what kind of weapon are you going to use when you're trying to defend and enforce land inside an O'Niell Cylinder, and any stray projectile could cause explosive decompression for the entire space colony?
Personally, I'd want something big with arms that can be used for both construction and melee combat, and legs capable of crossing any type of terrain, while being familiar and intuitive to control

    >You ever think about how mechs are an inherently moronic concept?
Mechs are not an inherently moronic concept. The idea of an all terrain mobile weapon resistant to all forms of attack besides another one of itself is logistically extremely viable for warfare. In addition, the idea of a humanoid modular system that can be customized for virtually any type of mission further adds credibility for their viability.

      Anonymous

Duh. Why do you think no real military has ever adopted them on a wide scale?

You mean like how a chopper isn't viable anymore if you shoot its tail off? Or a tank ends up being a glorified turret if its treads get fricked?
Besides, if you're gonna b***h about mechs being "expensive" because they can walk and fly like you did in

        >None of those bankrupt the companies that employ them.
None of those things are able to walk and fly, moron.
