It had a very small batch of physical copies made for overseas. Likely because they didn't expect to sell many as it was the end of the 3DS's lifespan around when it released.

Some 3DS games are comically expensive in west despite not being that old. The last Professor Layton for it is also in triple digits, used.

It was bullshit. Knowing how many copies of the first games lingered around, I figured I would be fine picking up a physical copy on release day without a preorder. They were sold out day one. Never played YW3 because they clearly didn’t want me to.

Best game on the 3ds, bar none. Best combat in the series, most content and secrets. Only thing which was was a loss from the previous entries, was the absense of Showa 40's area.

I don't like the dub voices and the usual crank-kai daily restrictions but I like Inaho (better than Fumi) and the kid you that you befriend, also this OST

The dub voices weren't great, but I do still stand by the fact that Joey D'Auria was the best voice for Whisper across the board for me.

The one thing I hate about the dub is the little quotes and quips in-between dialogue that blasters started. I gotta turn the volume down when characters start talking cause it's nothing but noise

The grid system was an absolute improvement and it should have been expanded upon rather than discarded

      Anonymous

It still baffled me the way they went with 4's battle system. Probably would've saved them so much time just translating the grid system to 4 than making a whole new system again.

The new girl character sucks but everything else is such an improvement it doesn’t matter. Also there’s just a second game in it how can it not be great.

I think it's a bloated mess. One of the worst cases of feature creep I've seen in anything. The main campaign is bogged down to absolute shit so you can get 4 different unfun spinoff games crammed into the cartridge. You do get two overworlds with plenty stuff to do but basically no dungeons, it relies 100% in comedic setpieces and wacky minigames, sometimes even to the detriment of having boss fights, and takes way too long to complete. I think the final dungeon is one of the most laughable of any game I've played, it's basically 50 floors of repeated rooms. It's just very fricking boring to play, and that's saying something for the series. I think 1 and 2 are better games.

    Incredible soundtrack though

      Anonymous

Oh yeah. I forgot about how awful the final dungeon was. I don't know what they were thinking with it rather than an appropriate final dungeon.

        Anonymous

Most likely ran out of funding or time, for the insane amount of content the game has, it has shit like that, couple closed off old areas, or that foreboding mansion being nothing but a single room and a dancing minigame, or that daruma tower being nothing but a bunch of rooms too, meh.

Maybe they ran out of space. I think it is the largest by file size game on the 3ds.

            Anonymous

Yeah, that I understand, it's got the zombie spinoff, the dungeon crawler, the other dungeon crawler with the demon monsters, all those japan areas and a new overworld on top of it, god knows how many monster models... Not many regular dungeons either except for that underground castle, the Zombie Superman's dungeon was just the spermarket turned into an obstable course, recycled content left and right, it's got just too much shit in it for its own good man, they should have chilled a little imo.

Can you befriend yokai in 2 and 3 easier than in 1? Most of my complaints are how easy it felt at times, and how hard it was to befriend yokai (especially the ones in post game that have long fights).

There was an extra touch-related thing to befriend Yokai easier I think. I'd also say it's easier than 1.

2 and 3 give you plenty of options to increase the chances of befriending Yo-kai. 3 ekks it out though with the Forbidden Fruit you can farm in the Blasters mode which will make Yo-kai want to be friends a 100% guarantee.

Sweet. I had a good time with the first game. I think my party was Impass, Komane, Komiger, Jibanyan, Cupistol, and Cynake.

Favorite game of all time, while I like the amount of stuff in the after game like new yokai and bosses I’m pretty bummed that there’s no infinite inferno which is infinitely (hah) better than the tower of zenlightenment. And considering how much power creep there is in this game I’m surprised we can’t use our new tools on Kat Kraydel

  10. 11 months ago
    Anonymous

I liked 2 a lot more but 3 was legitimately fun. The biggest complaints I have are the number of times you have to fight the exact same bosses with seemingly no level increase, and the fact that the story dragged on for a long time in some parts. They could've cut down a lot of the quests and condensed it a little to avoid having to run around all over the place just to complete a chapter. This is an issue with the English version, but I think they fricked up by trying to localize it in a very 4kids kind of way. It makes the American setting within the context of the original story awkward. Everything else about it was fairly charming and I'm glad I played it.

2 made it easier because there were extra ways to do it and 3 made it much more trivial. 1 is the only place where it's an absolute slog filled with suffering.

YW4 felt like a step down in some ways but it was a solid game on it's own.

I really liked it on the gameplay front (Blasters T being it's own whole thing was especially really fricking cool, bonus for giving you the insta-recruit food in droves if you were good enough), but I was hugely dissapointed with the Yo-Kai themselves. In the first two games where were a fait bit of designs based entirely on wordplay (most obviousl example being Slicenrice's Japanese name of Onigiri Samurai), but most of them still drew from folklore/myth anfd adapted them into the sometimes cute, sometimes cool, mostly weird designs that gave the series it's charm.
In 3, MOST of them are Japanese-to-English wordplay or stereotypes just turned into Yo-Kai with little to no actual cryptids. If you told a random joe of the street the basic premise of the franchise and then told them there was a game set in America, their mind would instantly move to shit like Bigfoot, Paul Bunyan, Chupacabra, maybe even more obscure shit like the Cactus cat and Teakettler, etc. In the end, however, the MOST we got was Little Charmer being kinda sorta based off of the Jersey Devil and it's a massive letdown.
Still, it did introduce a ton of my favorite Yo-Kai (El Gutso, Kyubot, Whyvern King, Asura) so I can't really say it was all bad. Just a lot worse than it should've been.

      > their mind would instantly move to shit like Bigfoot, Paul Bunyan, Chupacabra, maybe even more obscure shit like the Cactus Cat and Teakettler, etc
This is one of my peeves gripes with the American Yokai, they're all such a bunch of stupid goobers based on burgers and bacon and shit, they could have done way more, but the fact none of the ones you mention got a Yo-kai is criminal. Isntead we have living ice cream and capeshit. The shameless X-Files spoof kind of made up for it for me tho kek

It is a Japanese game first and foremost, with 0 international fanbase. The Japanese children wouldn't get references to obscure Americana culture.

I was reading Kitaro the other day, and it had count Dracula's grandson as a Yo-kai in it. Hell in the actual games there were western inspired Yo-kai like devils and vampires though, and they even dipped their toes into Egyptian stuff a little.

        >Japanese children wouldn't get references to obscure Americana culture
Neither would they have gotten the X-Files or Terminator references yet there they were, c'mon man, not even bigfoot?

        Anonymous

Then wouldn't this've been a perfect chance to introduce it to them? Surely getting the info that America isn't all burgers and fireworks and copious mounts of graffiti that say USA would've been cool for all those kids, and no more alienating then all of the stereotypes turned into Yo-Kai that already populate the game. Searching into foreign folklore/myth because a game you liked featured it prominently can be very effective-hell, I'm loathe to make this comparison, but look over at Pokemon and the amount of cultural influences they poured into the designs of regions like Alola and Galar that the (mainland) North American and Japanese fans ate up

On first glance, I would agree with you. However, I also really doubt it too. UMA (cryptid stuff) stuff is pretty well known in Japan. They are the ones that like putting in the Flatwoods Monster and Mothman into games sometimes. I don't think I've ever seen a western game put in the Flatwoods Monster. In fact, the only cryptid thing I've seen is the Red Dead Redemption DLC. I would argue they like that stuff more than we do based on how much I see it show up there versus here in the states. Not sure why that is, but I appreciate it.

I thought it was fantastic, easily the best game in the series.
I just wish the new Yo-kai were actually based on American mythology instead of it all being food, sports, and dumb puns.
Also I felt they kinda skimped out with Bada-Bing Tower being mostly the same floors.
Still, this game lets me get my girl Chatalie to S Rank, which is already a huge bonus cuz you couldn't really carry D-Rank Yo-kai with you to the endgame in the older titles.

Best game in the series and one of my favorite games of all time. There's so much content, the story is great, the dub voice actors are charming as usual, even if the localization does get a bit moronic in the US version. new yokai watch project. the level-5 ceo posted that image when the anime ended back in march. it's why people thought something yokai watch related would be announced during their live stream a few months ago. next best guess of when they will actually reveal it is for the 10th anniversary next month.

on the day Hino (CEO) was announcing a level-5 direct he said there could yokai watch news related and tease this image honestly no yokai watch is fine been waiting for a new Inazuma 11 and the still haven't gave us yk4 this is way longer than yk3 which was 2016 in JPN and 2018 in US

I loved it personally, but I must be an alzheimers patient because I can't remember any of this or any game I played in the last decade. I remember feeling like the switch between protagonists interesting, but was disappointed that it was mandatory rather than two campaigns. The new designs were all good for the most part, food yokai nonwithstanding

Okay, here's all the first series of medals I own, it's more like 70 but who's counting? I didn't sort them by type or that would have taken forever so deal with that but it should be more or less even I think? The final row are duplicate medals I had with my Medal Moments toys so they should still work despite that. Someone please scan the blurriest of these so I know they work just fine, the middle ones near the top-right should be the best ones to test.

I'll get the Yo-Motion stuff I have in a bit, I gotta free them from their plastic prisons as well but I only have like 10, maybe 20 of those.

They for sure work on western 1, no idea if they work on 2 or 3. Picture related is the small amount of Yo-Motion medals I have which should work on 2 onward? Not sure if they work on 1 but they came out after 2 did.
