>don’t remember any of this
Feels good bro
Autochess and its clones were on mobile too
i was playing warcraft 3 custom games with this gameplay like 15 years ago
And the most intricate of all, super auto pets
Go away NL
It's a novelty genre that doesn't have an actual audience. It's fun to try a couple of matches but it doesn't have any lasting appeal to anyone. People who like games want to be more hands-on. Just picking your dudes and watching them duke it out doesn't stay fun for long. I'm not saying there's no tactical-level decisionmaking involved at all, but it's super passive and low-level even compared to card games.
And people who don't like games just went back to their mobile gacha idle games.
Only liked Super Auto Pets but even that had issues with tryhards min-maxing. Games kinda become shit once most players know how to play and single player games are either too balanced to be any fun or so broken that there is never a reason to use anything but the broken tactic. Closest to the perfect game was Automon and even that look like ass on the surface with the parody art.
auto battlers are stick heckin great
they died so nothing went wrong
who the frick wants to play a game with minimal gameplay
oh wait, people who "play" phone games are already doing that
H auto battlers are fun
name 27
I liked Underlords and Super Auto Pets. All the Artifact boosters swapping to Underlords as a competitive game and then it dying in the ass immediately was amusing.
list each and every one of them
It was fun before people started meta-gayging. Meta-gayging in these games seems absolutely miserable but if you don't then just making on the fly decisions won't cut it anymore since a lot of the optimizations will be kind of obtuse and unintuitive.
LIterally never heard of this
TFT is still a big thing.
Riot just laid off half their TFT community team
TFT has a bigger dev team than ever? Wtf are you talking about
if it's such a big thing, then why doesn't anyone talk about it?
riot lies about all their numbers. It's dead and they just don't want to seem like a failure to their investors.
Noone talks about it on Ganker because everyone here is a soichugging console tard who plays movie games and nintendo shit. TFT does have an active community on other sites. You rarely get people talk about League on Ganker either and thats an undeniably big game.
I'd talk about it if there were threads for it. Then again, set 8.5 has been horrible and I checked out once I hit plat for the little legend reward so I understand people not wanting to discuss this atrocity.
8.5 is in a good state right now. 7.5 has been utter garbage.
>What happened? What went wrong.
Shit balancing in Teamfight Tactics
They tried to apply same "meta pick of the patch" LoL approach, and it backfired at high elo since you basically either high roll meta pick and end up 1-2 place/6-8 place or you try to survive and orbit around 3-7 place with small gains
dota2 auto chess was the only vaguely fun version and that died after the devs embraced greed.
Hearthstone battlegrounds is still popular because it's basically actual free2play Hearthstone.

I completely forgot these existed. Which are still decently active ie. 1000+ concurrent players at any given time?
I have no clue how to see player count for mobile games but my favourite of all these types of games is Might and Magic: Chess Royale.
TFT is biggest by far and is very active actually.
I have no idea how many people actually play it but I still play some HS battlegrounds from time to time and enjoy it, and it gets active development on par with the rest of the game
TFT is very alive.
It's like a game of poker but with miniatures to stare at between hands. I like the idea, some went a bit further like Minion Masters and made it a bit more strategic.
It's somewhat fun and the matches are way shorter so it doesn't feel that bad to lose even if it's to RNG.
It surely is more fun than pokemon fights. I'd like to see something like this in a game with a story/campaign.
I would play TFT more if it wasn't bundled with League of homosexuals, I refuse to install that game again.
Too much gameplay, autobattlers should play themselves.
As soon as streamers stopped covering the genre, it died. It's a genre that's fun to watch others play, but boring when you actually play it.
The problem is Dota Underlords was made by known scammers who commit false advertising and fraud.
Valve screwed over the Artifact fanbase by cancelling the Artifact 2.0 beta without even allowing users to invite friends like they said they would in January 2021 and does not deserve your financial support for these gross consumer-unfriendly practices.
THERE IT IS!!
TFT hasn't been good since Set 6.
>ITS DEAD ITS DEAD ITS DEAD!!!
Its not and it shows how clueless Ganker is on topics like this. TFT for example has 33 million monthly active players.
This is mostly because the game is available on mobile so there is a huge mobile only audience and also the fact that you can get rewards for League of Legends from playing TFT.
Even other autobattlers like Super Auto Pets are still going strong.
Dota 2 and Blizzards autochess only died just because their versions were shit.
TFT is in that Hearthstone phase where you know its popular, but I'd gauge it doesn't new player much and its all about retention of the dedicated people
>MAU
One of the shittiest metric imaginable, with zero basis on what "active" means. Someone logging in, playing ONE match, in a full month isn't active by any means.
33 million is still a shitload, even if you assumed 90% of them were people playing once a month it would still be a very active game with millions of active players.
No matter how shit metric is, it's a huge amount of people
With average match being 30 minutes, even assuming literally everyone plays one match per month, there would be, on average, 20k people playing it at any given moment.
That's around the same amount of people playing Terraria or Elden Ring on steam at this moment
And I repeat, that's assuming everyone play exactly one match per month
You mean set 2
Having played a frickton of both and hating both companies immeasurably, BGs shit all over TFT, both companies make frickawful balance choices but TFT strives to limit fun as much as it can
Dota lost.
Underlords was great. It had good production value, good UI, flavor and gameplay. Then they proceded to make mistake after mistake and left the game to rot. Every time I think about it I die a bit inside. Fricking valve abandoning the game like that.
hey what is the pizza girl doing outside Ganker
For me it's Super Auto Pets and Hearthstone Battlegrounds.
You are now manually remembering the tower/hero defence craze
>The TD series
>Footman Frenzy
>Moo Moo Generation
It was massive for a hot minute there
What happened? What went wrong.
Was never a craze to me because that genre is shit.
>Why is no one playing the game that plays itself anymore
...
"autobattler" is a shit name for the genre because it makes morons believe things like this.
Imagine thinking Valve and Blizzard would actually long term support their games.
TFT is still popping.
My issue with TFT is my issue with all multiplayer games, it started out fun, everything is OP, but then the endless nerf hammer hit and nerfed everything i could ever latch on.
Even if all the luck and skill coincides with me getting to my end goal team, it just feels like garbage and i end up finishing like 6th place, and then by next week its also getting nerfed.
Multiplayer games can frick off with their esports balancing, endgame for these balances is for everything to be mediocre slop
i'm shit at these games
i never know when i should and shouldn't spend for units or just hold
Mechabellum is fun.
anecdotally i would say there are more people playing BGs than ladder in HS
>remembering
Frick that, Mechabellum is great.
You forgot the best one
Project Neural Cloud
Which is still bad, boring genre
Fifteen different games in the genre came out at once and resulted in a fractured playerbase that all operated under different rules. Most popular games go through a period of rapid growth and then contraction as the less interested stop playing, eventually they'll stabilize if they have enough people to still function as a multiplayer game (IE, you can find matches of appropriate skill levels).
What happened with auto-battlers is that because there were so many different ones and the playerbase wasn't concentrated on a single one, when the contraction phase came around, the remaining populations were too small to sustain the game so they all fell apart. No single game had the lion's share of people, so instead of migrating to one that was still alive, people just stopped playing.
It also didn't help that the games themselves were closer to party games you play with friends instead of having a lot of depth and making for a competitive experience. No one plays Mario Kart or Mario Party every day religiously even if they like the game, it's something you pull out for occasional silly fun.
Underlords was alright, they just had no sense of direction for what they actually wanted to do with it and just gave up.
