      >retcon everything after TFT
      >make the game world 10x larger than vanilla map was
      >player characters are able to solo play and explore just fine but dont turn into special snowflake main character godslayer at level cap, more akin to a unit from War3
      >big named heroes are very rarely utilized, mostly fixated on governing their states instead of playing soap opera in other dimensions
      >the world is dangerous with each race having their little corner
      >Horde and Alliance are unfriendly though not hostile but you can learn to speak each other's languages and even play together
      >Night Elves and Forsaken are not members of the Horde or Alliance
      >Eastern Kingdoms focus on reclaiming land from the Scourge remnants, healing the taint from the undead and demonic invasion, exploring the craggy and foreboding Eastern shores, navigating the power struggles between the DI dwarves, orc holdovers, and black dragons, trying to rebuild the human kingdoms
      >Kalimdor is super focused on exploring the wild unknown, night elves rediscovering ruins from before the Legion invasion or just forces that left the forest and never returned, Horde races trying to eke out a living in difficult hostile terrain, remote Titan facilities, just huge expanses of strange, beautiful, but deadly lands

real problem is WoW has been mining the RTS games for so long that there is no mystery left in the parts of the setting that are actually cool, all the new stuff the MMO has added in the last 5-10 years has been fricking dogshit and just deeply uninteresting at best. the best part of the early MMO was the sense of wonder and adventure but there is no wonder or mystery left in any of it, everything has been explained and retconned/"recontextualized" over and over and over again

also this, the game looks like Tumblr/Pixar fusion diarrhea at this point, just look at the new Nerubians and tell me the art design of the franchise isn't dead

    >How do you make the lore not absolute dogshit???
Disregard the past 20 years of Warcraft lore and write a cool grimdark fantasy story of orcs vs men with some demon or undead shenanigans here and there
    No cosmic threats
    No space or time travel
    No wacky lolrandumb characters
Draw clear lines between good and evil but let players choose which ones they want to play out. To specify players joining the horde will have to do quests that actually require them committing evil actions.

Grimdark is almost always Diablo or Darkest Dungeon style edgy bullshit with blood, guts and misery. WoW has always had forces of good vs evil, it's just that the factions are morally grey

I'm not the guy who made that post, I'm just saying your definition of grimdark is fricking weird. All he said is that he wants a more down to earth humans vs orcs game, which to be fair to him is basically what Warcraft 1 and 2 were.

Make it about the fricking war. Factions are races, not stupid alliances that make no sense whatsoever. Threats are actually threats that stay the long run and aren't completely finished off in one raid.
And most importantly, keep it low scale. The player character must not be the quadruple chosen one savior of the multiverse, just a random dude making his way in the world.
If it were up to me, WotLK would have been three expansions, in order to build up how much of a threat the Lich King was.

Stop pretending you actually played WC3. The New Horde isn't evil and the factions work together against greater threats.

My own style of writing would lead to historical fiction, writing about e.g. not-Coriolanus/Alcibiades, or whatever, Juxtaposed into Azeroth, with systematization of how magic works, etc.

But that's not Warcraft now is it. So I would go with the style of WarCraft: entirely based on rule of cool, nothing fancy. Most of everything goes like fans always speculated, like Lich King is defeated in an epic showndown between Arthas and everyone who has a bone to pick with him, from Jaina to Mal'ganis (well, Mal'Ganis surviving is Wrath, but that one detail for instance is fine to retain). No forced melodrama with Wrathgate or Broken Shore and shit: Horde and Alliance won't be at war (which is moronic anyway because Alliance so overwhelmingly outnumbers the Horde) but there's more regional conflicts that players can participate, like Defilers vs League of Arathor or Frostwolves vs Stormpike Guard, but at the same time the factions aren't portrayed as becoming friends. Game timeline first explores Kul'Tiras, Zandalar, Kezan, Pandaria, Quel'Thalas, Grim Batol, and other familiar places in Azeroth, final 3 plotlines are Northrend, Outland, and finally Argus, where Burning Legion is defeated with the help of the Titans, although I think it would be appropriate to update the world every now and then, kinda like TBC had Sha'tari guard investigation and the Fruit Vendor feud progressing in patches, but more extensive and more than cosmetic (for instance, perhaps Lakeshire bridge gets fixed in an unrelated content patch).

I'd recon the entire series, now with proper writing and set lore from the start, so no retcons nor endless power creep.
I'd start with Warcraft Forever (IV), which plot wise would tell both a remake of Warcraft 1+2 and also a campaign of the first big war in Azeroth (I guess the first war among trolls and the nerubians or whatever), with all the major wars in the middle being added as DLC, finishing with the remake of Warcraft III 6-12 months before launching WoW 2.
Gameplay wise I'd evolve the genre too doing basically a mix of grand strategy and RTS.

Why? Vanilla's lore is pretty good. Mostly because they were just setting up a whole new world and invented new characters and stories, it started becoming pure dogshit in TBC, the moment they brought back old characters and destroyed their storylines

        Anonymous

hm i guess you're right in some regards, vanilla did have some interesting stories. the problem i have with making the lore into an MMO is a group of guys in <DICKSUCKERS UNITED> can kill arthas or cthun or whoever. it's better when you are playing as in-game characters like in WC3 than as your own created character put into the world.
which also is one of the reasons the lore got out of control bad imo. if there has to be an mmo it was better when you aren't the world saving hero and just a random person

Wrath was easily WoW's least interesting xpac, no one staying around for Wrath Classic. The scourge are just generic zombies, it's not interesting. Pandaria had the celestials, the pandaren culture, the mogu, the mantid, the trolls, and so much more. It managed to be lighthearted while also very serious.

Wow pvp is fun... when you can actually fight your opponent. The problem is that most of the pvpers in the world don't want to fight. They want to win and kill everyone with ease. So they overlevel and go to underleveled areas or rove in packs and only take fights they can win. That sucks for one side and it's b***h moves for the other. If you can beat on an opponent for 20 seconds and not make a dent in their healthbar there's really no point any more and that's 90% of modern world pvp.

Pretty much just keep books War of the Ancients, Day of the Dragon, Lord of Clans, Rise of the Horde, Cycle of Hatred, Of Blood and Honor, The Last Guardian and Tides of Darkness outside of the main WCI-III lore. Hard restart from starting point that WoW starts at 5 years after WCIII.

  21. 2 weeks ago

I mean, the lore of WoW was never really anything special, it was just a good medium for players to exist in.

When IPs go too long they always turn into a clusterfrick of storylines piled on top of one another that lose sight of what made the IP special in the first place. I would say maybe devise an in-universe way for the story to soft reset from time to time and do some more experimental things on occasion. They might not all be amazing but you might hit a few good ones on occasion.

hot take but lore hardly matters in itself. whats really important is how the player is presented the story. main character type story sequences do not belong in MMOs. Put the person in the world and let them do some quests and kill things, maybe work on a profession right away. I hate starting up a big multiplayer game and spending the first 20 minutes going through a forced tutorial where it plays like a single player game in my own little instanced area.

MMO's in general becoming more single player focused has been so fricking lame. I'm really supposed to believe I'm the one true hero in a game that has hundreds of players running around doing the same exact quest? It just doesn't work in an MMO. I love how in vanilla WoW you're just some random adventurer and the game is self aware that other adventurers exist.

    Side note.
How did WoW actually make female humans unique? They seem to stand out compared to human females in other games. I'm thinking it's the proportionately long but thick legs, and heavy looking breasts that sag a bit.
I know it's weird but usually humans in games are either very modest or idealized. Adding gravity makes them stand out.

i can design my own map. every section of this map will be like a treasure chest filled with gold. i'm imagining the typical rats here will make $2 per hour. that is actually a good amount to simulate a feeling of accomplishment. this can be done through looser protection of the digital / physical conversion, it can be done entirely with bitcoin. $2 per hour will be made through labor in the forge. you will be killing enemies who drop tokens, thats so boring isnt it? not really actually. i enjoyed the concept of cycling through the map, this can be done through spawns which also reward comparable tokens and a rare mount. we want there to be total noobs here who dont know what the hell they're doing for us to bully. this can be done through confusing mechanics which take 20 hours to figure out. nobody is really going to google what happens in assfall cave, they want to explore it. they want to experience the depths of assfall cave with their own hands. but what if assfall cave was filled with pozzed traps and the loot wasn't that good, but sometimes it actually is good. this type of misleading gameplay can create fun moments. every person should feel a desire to explore things and click on them. we will also include griefing, theres a wide selection of griefing mechanics to choose from. i want to be stunning up noobs on my rogue and running away while they die to a fall mechanic. overall i'm just too tired to play wow. its too much shit to research, and it doesn't seem worth learning. we could return to simplicity and have the levels in wow 2 looks like mario level select. nobody really liked traveling anyways.

I thought about something like that too. What if we actually lost to the Lich King, and our souls got trapped inside Frostmourne, our bodies risen as undead? Then every expansion is nothing but a string of hallucinations. The way the Lich King controls souls is by giving them false perceptions.
