SaGa Frontier. For a game that was rushed out in 1997 at a time where Squaresoft was pumping out like one blockbuster after the next, the game miraculously stood on its own two feet.
Sparking I fricking refuse to calling it glimmering techs is so satisfying, and the game has an absolutely kick-ass OST that's worthy of being listened to on an MP3. Majority of the final bosses are also cool as frick, have incredible boss music, and incredible visuals behind their signature attacks.

Stasis Bone Totem. Never thought a game could make me care about a freak this ugly, but it managed. Overall reasons for enjoying it: I thought the story was really good, but it also cut down on a lot of the tedium of point and click puzzle games by letting you scan the environment (and puzzle screens) for interactibles rather than having to pixel hunt, and having three playable characters at the same time that you can swap between freely made it nice to like, when I got stuck, swap to someone else and kinda reset my thinking.
Can't really think of anything I'd cut from it.

Being vanilla as frick, but replaying OoT right now. Not my favourite game, not the best game ever made and probably not the best Zelda, but it does feel like a masterpiece. Every bit of it is so distinct, every character and music piece burns into your memory, the dungeons are well designed and polished, even the infamous ones like Water Temple. And I played this game for the first time two years ago, so I have no nostalgia for it.

That's a very high bar and imo requires both lofty ambition and near-perfect execution. Most games, even some of the best ones ever made, can only achieve one or the other. I can love a game enormously and still be reluctant to call it a masterpiece.
I know Ganker hates it but I'm gonna say Last of Us 2. It's such an intricately crafted thing of beauty with a unique, strange atmosphere and easily the greatest storytelling of any game.
Also, the movement fluidity and general production values/attention to detail actually ruined many other games for me for a while. Even very high quality games would look and feel a bit shit by direct comparison. Clipping, snapping, and other character locomotion issues stood out like a sore thumb. Cutscene animation that I would've been very impressed by before TLOU2 suddenly looked amateurish and robotic. Etc. I had to take a break for a while to let my reference point reset.
