there is not one single good game for this system. there is literally nothing you could sit and play for over an hour and not be bored. even average NES jank is significantly better than the best 2600 games. i get why it was popular when there was no alternative, and it's a nice looking system, but the games are ass. it's a stone wheel.
The 2600 was discontinued in 92 and would have been in blow-out bins for years afterwards. Lots of people don't have much money. My parents did fine financially, and the 2600 was my first console around 92-93.
my first console was Game and Watch i've had in 1995.
Then I got NES, and by the end of 2001 I had Dreamcast. Then PS2 and so on.
Thanks to that, I am now more or less familiar with how the video games were evolving and don't reject older systems because of starting with more advanced ones. It's always good to start with the basics, whatever year it is.

Pitfall 1 & 2. Also frick you.
Its the best controller i have for the 2600. But if youre used to good arcade buttons, it will feel kinda cheap. But i have broken many highscores of mine with it coming from stock cx40 and trooper IIs. Also thanks for the compliment, mang. Atari is my favorite and didnt have one till a few years ago
Really? I'm using a newish retro-bit Genesis controller, but I've been curious about the Hyperkin 2600 stuff. I wish they didn't use a fricking "analog" stick on their paddle/joystick combo. Just put a normal d-pad on it...

Im the dude with the arcade stick. But the hyperkin trooper II was my goto for a while. I wore it out after a year and a half tho. Im not even hard on it, just put probably 300 hours on it and then it started to stick down. But for 15 bux, its very good

Damn, I just assumed they were garbage; thanks for the heads up anon.
Oh boy, this is a good one! >Frogger >Ms. Pac Man >Space Invaders >Galaxian >Phoenix >Kaboom! >Berzerk >Adventure >Yars' Revenge
Its pretty much the first console rpg. Its not perfect or anything but its a great breath of fresh air compared to all the arcade style games on the system.
There are three areas. First area is a countryside where you train (build up xp points), collect money and items to use later. You can spend as long as you want here and train by fighting random encounters till your fighter is really good, or you can just spend a little time and try to beat the game with low xp. Its also got some randomized aspects so every playthrough is a little different. Second area is a town you spend the money you collected on weapons and hiring mercenaries. Third area is the dragons lair. You work your way to the dragon then fight him. He can be quite difficult, all depending on how prepared you are. It can be fun to try and fight him underpowered as an extra challenge on repeat playthoroughs. The whole game takes an hour or two, depending on how long you screw around.
Dragonstomper is a very simple rpg, but its actually well made and fun in my opinion. Actually I can’t think of another rpg that is under two hours long. Remember we’re talking about the atari 2600 here, for its era it has plenty of depth. After playing tons of missile command or defender 2 or centipede its fun to play something slower paced like adventure or Dragonstomper. But dont expect an NES rpg like Final Fantasy. Dragonstomper is to Final Fantasy what Adventure is to Zelda. Its played by loading a cassette into the supercharger addon, giving it a bit more memory.

You have to be at least 30 to post here
hey breakout is pretty fun at least
that said yeah it's not the kinda thing you'd play for long
can you not do math? 2022 - 30 is 1992, as in, somebody who wouldn't know jack about atari unless their parents didn't have much money

What a pathetic childhood you must have had
I was 4 or 5 anon, the Atari was in the house from my older siblings, I loved the Atari and still do.
my first console was Game and Watch i've had in 1995.
Then I got NES, and by the end of 2001 I had Dreamcast. Then PS2 and so on.

Nice, I've been playing with a Genesis pad lately but have been thinking about getting something with arcade-style parts.
hyperkin makes a $14 controller
i haven't switched back yet
they get (deserved) shit making crappy stuff
their atari joysticks are godtier

Can you redpill me on Dragonstomper, I feel like I don't get it

Beautiful
I am willing to admit about myself that I cannot get value out of the Atari 2600.
If you're not an butthole about it that's totally cool. It's easy to recognize it's not for everyone, especially if it's an anachronism to you.
Why only 10? Am I going to a deserted island with electricity.
