It's not an incredible leap in logic to jump from what he had into a sandbox game, when all the building blocks (excuse the pun) were right there in front of him.

If it doesn't eat him up inside then hes a better man than I would be in his position.

A fricking high school math teacher at some random school just because he thought it was fun.

He's the kind of guy that doesn't give a shit and just does whatever. Kind of like how some autists just sit inside with their train sets 24/7 and are legitimately happy and fulfilled.

I remember seeing a video about his house.
It struck me how cheap a lot of stuff in there looks, despite likely costing shitloads.
Stuff like plastic-wrapped display rifles, a basic-b***h custom chopper, a bunch of other random shit, supermarket-style M&M dispensers in the arcade parlor etc. A lot of the stuff in there wasn't even the pretentious kind of overpriced, like, say a "painting" by some b***h who drank paint then vomited it on a canvas. It was just overpriced versions of cheaper things.
Genuinely felt like the house of a guy who never spent any time developing 'tastes', and felt like he had to do something with his money after he got it.

Not him but it's a bit of a double edged sword. Unity is far easier to learn and more accessible so it's ideal for solodev. Unreal is much harder to learn and not ideal for solo development for a lot of reasons. And Godot is designed by people with downsyndrome. So there's pros and cons to everything.

Don’t lie to ppl. Notch first worked for popcap or some company and made small games for them and built up a work understanding and routine that worked. This is when he broke off and managed to do something with it. God uses people. The game idea and engine already existed for what he wanted to do, which helped. But it also distracts us from making 3D Metroid and Mario games which would be perfect for kids on computer. Imagine those block smash segments and coin rooms in Mario 3 and super Mario world tier stuff. That is what I want to play.

you gotta be like an idiot savant to make certain ideas massive hits.

who would have thought a game based around building brown bricks could be so popular?
or think of other stupid ideas. who would have thought creating facebook would be so profitable? never in my life i would have thought people would willing give out their personal info for free.

facebook wasn't an organic success. places like facebook and twitter basically got snatched up by US intelligence agencies and then get forced onto the population for obvious reasons. it's a control method, not a sincere corporation.

        Anonymous

How did the agencies force people to use these platforms?

          Anonymous

Not that anon, but if you want to somehow force people to use a platform like that you do it in tandem with organic growth.
Push schools to use FB as their preffered platform (had classes that legit had me join FB pages for it)
Post important and or relevant gov info on pages
          Link to facebook constantly
Basically do a lot of marketing work for them.

Wave Break was continuously shilled on both here and /agdg/. This was a very safe concept to get popular and it flopped. Don't make a game to make money, do it because you like it

      Anonymous

the game looks incredibly soulless. it's also not a safe concept, it's very niche. a safe concept would by co-op/multiplayer survival fps

      Anonymous

What is safe about that concept? Its a game that is confusing AF to explain and when you tie your concepts to other games like tony hawk etc. you are inevitably faced with the question... why should i not just play those instead? So the more games you smash together like that, the more competition you created for yourself.

It might be true. But there's a common sentiment that videogame success is connected to luck a wee bit too much.
Solo developers and small teams don't make a lot of money to the point where making copycat abortions of videogames and throwing them into a cesspool of mobile appstores yelds actual stable income.

I know it isn't anywhere near a billion dollars.

I'd be surprised if it made 10,000.

It is about as niche as you can imagine but it would be the game I would want to play.

It would also get taken off Steam so I would want to release it myself, meaning it wouldn't make 1000.

If you wan't to take inspiration from notch. Do so. But take the right lesson. Its not about making something original. Its about finding an niche that did not yet blow up, take a game that already exists and polish it, and market it to that crowd.

I wonder if Microsoft regrets shelling out a billion dollars for the Minecraft IP. They can't do anything with it. Minecraft autists don't want a Minecraft 2 or a spin-off, they just want more bricks to stack in their little playroom.

      Anonymous

They got Minecraft for a steal. The IP is worth more than 10B easily
Notch just wanted out and was willing to take a huge loss because at those scales it doesn't matter much if you've got 1 or 10 billion

did they even made any money from it? minecraft isn't as popular as it once was and most people that play it bought it long ago, they bought it at it's peak when minecraft was on news sites, tv and even education, now it's just another game

          Anonymous

It is more timing that winning the lottery. I could win the lottery tomorrow and get on a few million, but a few weeks ago it was over 100 million.

Minecraft hit right in that sweet spot 09/10 time frame It is why you won't see another Minecraft acquisition of this level. Im sure other indie games will get snatched up but 2.1 billion isn't happening no matter how good your game is.

I'm reasonably successful myself. Not rich but high-status enough to met people in the top echelons. It's very hard to change the world at all but the very highest levels of wealth, because game theory mandates that competition from other people at lower levels will push against whatever you're trying to achieve.

            Anonymous

        lmao
I won't give you my existing one, but here's one I just came up with:
A shoot'em up mobile game like Hotline Miami, but with upgradeable weapons and you have limited ammo in every level, you gain ammo by killing enemies, and if you frick up and lost all the ammo, you lose.

          Anonymous

If the gameplay is as satisfying as hotline miami is it could work. That entire idea hinges on your ability to produce incredibly satisfying gameplay.
But I don't see what would be the mobile market monetization scheme in this, just ads?

            Anonymous

I doubt it would be popular, so probably just putting a price would be a better option I think, like $5 dollars or something.

              Anonymous

As a straight buy the game price? That would be a bad play for a mobile game
At least go the half the game is free and the latter half of it costs something to unlock. You'd want to hook people on the gameplay before you ask them for money since you are basing your success on how addictive the gameplay is
