Why the frick do we NEED a AAA game industry is the question

            Anonymous

There are some projects which cannot be done by small teams or lone developers.
Even games which are now over a decade (or decades) old, like the 3D Fallouts, WoW, Dark Souls, Metal Gear Solid 2-5, or Mario Galaxy are too large of a task for anyone other than a large team to undergo.
And large teams need a large amount of money, which requires a AAA, corporate set-up to make profitable and feasible.

Sure, for most games we can just play indie stuff. But for some great games, there needs to be a business for it to continue on.

I used to be a conservative, super anti socialist pro free market type of guy.
And while I still don't support socialism, since it's moronic and inefficient, I no longer endorse our current system.

Like everyone is being fricked over just so the few who have money can continue to make more off of destroying business after business.
            Who can support this?

It's like that meme with the two Aztec guys looking at a guy having his heart ripped out on an alter. One Aztec man turns to the other and says

Capitalisms is a great system, but the problem is it requires Government Intervention. You have to do pescribed burns every so often so that wealth doesn't accumulate at the top to the point where it chocks everyone out. Despite that the Libertarians you might see at the circus say, Companies will 100% abuse you more than governments ever will. Like, we have an issue now of whistle blowers of Boeing just mysteriously dying. Or how companies have gone ahead with a product that they knew would kill people but assumed the cost of settlements was less than the profits. Companies actively work to undermined competition by any means necessary. Capitalism requires some competition to work. The problem is our system doesn't do anything to deal with this excess wealth. You have to be willing to break companies up and tax rich people.

                True.
While the power of the free market it great, a truly free market can only come when all businessmen have to play fair.
If given the opportunity, and businessman will try to end competition, because competition is good for everyone except capitalists.

Honestly, the real problem is with our debt-based economy, and I've been wracking my head for a while now, basically to have your cake and eat it, since what the debt-based economy does well is make it really easy for funds to go from savers to borrowers, OR, for people and firms to finance big capital investments to boost their productivity without having to pay out of pocket. This is the big factor, by the way. I'd argue it's the reason the industrial world could take off the way it did. You would be surprised how good it is when you can enjoy the benefits of a 5 million dollar capital asset for your business without needing to cough up 5 million dollars right there.

Of course, literally everything else about it, debt slavery, rampant inflation, gradual transfer of wealth to the super-elite, ect, is abominable and the main reasons for our society's slow collapse. So, basically the ideal solution would be the one really good thing about a debt economy without the negatives, and with that, I hate to admit I'm stumped.

Personally I think the west is fine. We're good. We don't need more innovation and expansion, we have more than what we need already.
So frick it, end debt based capitalism and let us retire from competition and enjoy the fruits of the nation's economy

Capitalism is why the AAA industry is dying. The core of capitalism is that you have to make a product that appeals to people to outcompete other people making these same type of products. anti-capitalism systems like stocks prop up these companies despite making bad products, extending their death march.

        Anonymous

        This
The invisible hand of the market is giving AAA companies a prostate exam because they didn't want to innovate and let themselves become to inefficient, bureaucratic, and incompetent. They become so averse to risk and so complacent in their regular userbase that their bloat outpaced their growth and we're just not starting to see the effects.
Doesn't help that the investors also expected their big profit uptick during Corona to last forever when even a fricking 5th grader could have told you sales were going to go down when you stop having a literal captive audience.

This is exactly what SHOULD happen. Capitalism is working as intended because the boomers in the government don't give enough of a frick about those newfangled video games enough to bail the companies out of their mistakes with taxpayer dollars.

I know this is rhetorical (issue is quality) but there is more going on. What is driving this is inflation, or more specifically, the kind of "stagflation" we had in the 70s. Wages are lagging behind inflation, so people are cutting back. This is why Starbuck's stock took a major dip. People are simply buying less expensive coffee and they are making it at home. Remember that article on how people were playing older games? You don't need to go buy a new game when you have some all already, or can get something on a Steam sale, or emulate a game.

Mind you, quality is a big factor, but what is happening is that people are wising up to AAA now that budgets are tight. Do you want to waste $70 on a game that may just be 15 hours a mediocre? And sorry industry people, but it's unlikely you will see growth. 2020-2022 was likely the peak for games. We'll never have another COVID and the population globally is shrinking. Best case is Gen Z/Alpha spends more as they get older, but given the trend, they'll be poorer than millennials. What you should expect to see
      >Industry keeps shrinking and people like Christopher ACK themselves. Becomes more of a nerd thing again
      >Game prices go down as consumers can't afford $70 or will just avoid them or cheaper titles
      >PS will become more irrelevant as company will only go multiplatform and prioritize PC
      >More layoffs. Soon studio closures
      >Games will get smaller and more focused. Movie games will die off as the market can't guarantee 10 million sales
      >Switch 2 will do OK but will lag behind the previous Switch

        Anonymous

yeah, good points. I wanna add that I think your point about the price points hits harder if someone considers that gaming is sort of overvalued. Or "overheated" or whatever is best to say. I don't know.

They have been spending the last 10 years converting every single person they can into a "gamer". From my point of view games are created with the masses in mind because during the last decade and a half we've been riding in the wake of the "Sexy nerd" and "Marvel Universe is cool now" media wave. Nerds went from weird people at school to scanty hot gorls (wearing big glasses). So during this time a lot of people who would never have gotten into the hobby dabbled in it. Now that Marvel and "nerd culture" is dying out of the limelight, the previous levels of consumerism are dying out too. Oh, and right, not just the "MCU" but also Lord of the rings. I don't think people understand what LOTR did to boost the gaming industry. The one two punch of LOTR and WoW was probably the launchpad that kickstarted this growth. People are dropping out of gaming.

          Anonymous

I hadn't thought of it that way. Most industries that are necessities (i.e. food and energy) have been overvalued, that is for sure. But certain movies pushing nerd culture is possible and I know LOTR made fantasy cool again. On that note, I do wonder if those Fortnite kiddies will end up just growing out of games. I know people that would play games in college (normally shooters) and then they'd give it up later. The Fortnite kids could be the same way. There are probably a few games that do really well because they reach these kinds of people but never actually keep anyone. But yeah, people are certainly leaving gaming, which I'm all for.

          >the population globally is shrinking.
Technically it's still growing, and will do so until we're about like 10 million or so should projections hold.

But all that new growth is largely in Africa and poorer regions in Asia.
Europe, the developed parts of Asia, and the Americas are expected to shrink in population.
Obviously Africans don't have the money to play AAA games. They can play phone games, they buy phones, but AAA gaming needs a TV, plus a console, and then the games. Also an electric, and even often internet, connection

You're correct (though I expect as Western countries decline, so will the aid to Africa resulting in mass starvation). I really meant decline in the first world. Gaming is only ever been viable in White and Asian countries due to the wealth and IQ issue. South America has more of a market but it's so small and a lot of the people playing are probably the whiter South Americans.

The main issue of western (especially and particularly American) industry are the astronomical budgets. Expenses have bloated to unsustainable levels where even games that sell millions are not profitable enough, and so far the industry leaders have been reluctant to tone down the budgets, other way around, corporations are just doubling down on playing lottery with AAA megaproductions because they keep wishing for a new GTA or Fortnite.

Reminder that Dodge vs Ford and resultant shareholder primacy has been a disaster for the human race.

      Anonymous

The shareholders are the worst possible people to control a corporation.
Because they don't have any inherent love for any business outside of the price of their stock.
The employees, the management, the product, the consumer - no shareholder has any reason to give a frick about any of that.

Any other group owning a business would be superior.
      >Consumers would care about the product and it being affordable and accessible
      >Employees would care about their jobs, and what they do
      >Management would at least want the respect of doing their jobs nobly most the time.

But the stock holders don't need to work for the company, consume its products, take the blame or glory of its impact on the world, or even provide work for the employees.
All their interest is, is money.

So no wonder there's such a terrible problem with layoffs, falling quality of products, skyrocketing prices.
We are being run by an evil and ambivalent class of greedy, do-nothing stock brokers.

AAA companies are fricking themselves over by making these super expensive games no one wants to play.
All these studios spend close to a billion dollars on these live service games, but the player only has time for one or maybe two live service games by the nature of the time they require.
So they've been making game after game which no one wants to play, games which are more expensive than anything else they've ever made.

And then there's the fact that it cannot be expected for gaming to always grow. We've reached the cap of people who buy consoles, people who are interested in that. Right now it's 200 million.
And until the third world is rich enough to buy these luxury items, it will stay at 200 million.
The economy is worse off, people don't have as much money. So luxury industries will falter.

He probably can't even describe a single video game in any significant detail, he just sees flashing pixels and asks the person standing next to him, "And this will make money? People will give us money for this? How much?" His only concern is money. He moves money around. He looks at where money is coming from and where it's going. That's it.

        >It couldn't be something as simple as the games being fun.
To an extent, you'd be correct. Epic did become the behemoth it is by at one point offering fun and technologically advanced games, and CoD was revered for its quality before it became an icon of yearly releases. Now they're riding the coattails of their market seniority and players' sunk cost fallacy. The market is full, people play the same games they've been playing for a decade and aren't looking for anything new.

In the 1980's there wasn't an entrenched class of professional managers demanding diversity and inclusion, to the detriment of all other factors in making games and running a business. Games largely HAVE to fit into predefined diversity boxes, and game studios are managed by a) uncreative bean counters, and b) People who view games as nothing more than a means of delivering "their message."

DEI shit isn't the only reason why games suck nowadays, but it's the big one. You physically cannot make a good product with the spectre of communism hovering over your shoulder, threatening to fire you and ruin your life unless you include the quota-mandated amount of blacks and gay people.

It's because game industry has gotten so big that it has attracted other industries that have higher expectations (see film and theme park industries buying in heavily into vidya market with a slew of adaptations and collabs). Now outside investors expect to reach huge gains like those they used to see in their previous industries they were invested in but game industry is still young and unable to sustain such expectations so instead it gets choked out while indie games will actually thrive because most of them live on the old virtues of build a product on limited budget.

I don't know, anon. I specifically asked for some things to be included in games and voiced my opinion for things I didn't like. I wasn't only ignored, people told me to frick off. So I don't see how this is my fault. Markets work both ways. You provide something people want and people pay money for it. I still have the money, but almost nobody is producing things I want.

Does the whole Ford v Dodge thing with companies being required to maximize profits for shareholder apply to Non-American countries and companies? I wouldn't imagine it does for a company solely located outside of America, but if a company was international like Sony, does it?

Stop this obsession with growth. There is a ceiling and when you try to get past it you get what is happening now. Can you not be happy with your current position of essentially being one of if not the most profitable entertainment industry?

It's very quickly becoming a case of those who tapped the market earlier will dominate in it. Expected really but it's still entertainment.

It's just the western AAA industry dying
Nintendo and the JPN industry (not just AAA) is thriving unless you're named Square Enix since they tied themselves to THE western AAA corp (SIE)

Maybe not try and squeeze every penny out of a volatile market and instead downsize for a more sustainable business model, of course that's impossible with shareholders thrown into the mix

Maybe if the studios would make good games and stop destroying good games with moronic choices that have to come from out of touch executives.
I'm looking at Hell Divers 2 on this one. They had a certified hit and they killed it with one dumb choice chasing money.

They did that too themselves. Every game now needs to be a runaway record breaking success and they injected woketard shit into once beloved franchises and drove away the gamers. They still make money because the current era is BAZINGA OMG NERD SHIT and normies buy it to post them playing on X but the game needs to make far more money because some moron thought videogames need to be like capeshit movies and have 9 figure budgets.

This is what I wanted. Vidya has been going in a failure of a direction for 15 years, and to see it regress, rid itself of bad influences, and lose interest by the venture capitalist asshats that fricked it over since Peter Moore cancelled the Dreamcast and the rise of EA and Ubisoft... it's been fricking relieving to see everything dial back.

Who gives a frick. In 5 years you’ll be able to prompt any curren gen level AAA game you want with open source generative AI.
Video models by then will allow you to walk around persistent full scale versions of any city in the world and any fantasy world. They’ll be populated by thousands of NPCs that you can talk to and command.
People will spend all day strolling around Middle Earth on random quests. Either VR or flatscreen, whatever you prefer.
Is anon still not paying attention at all? The entire fricking world is working on AI nonstop. All the galaxy brains and richest frickers alive are pouring everything into it. It’s going to destroy every single mainstream entertainment industry and all of the Slopflix and moronic woke gaming studios will die forever.

How the frick are you homosexuals so far behind still, this has been obvious for years

Agree. All these predictions ITT and so few of them get anywhere close to what will actually happen. AI improves exponentially across the board, indie games become mind-blowing, big studios either secure exclusive IP rights to Star Wars, LOTR, or similarly popular fantasy worlds, or they die. That is the only
outcome. It’s a matter of time and I wouldn’t bet on it taking longer than a decade max.
