I liked Saints Row 3, but I think it's fair that it killed the studio. Especially after they reskinned it 4 times. Most studios don't try to ride the same game for a decade when it's not even worth the second go around.

      Anonymous

      this.

SR3 is as far as they should have pushed the formula.

SR4 actually had gameplay elements that stepped on all previous gameplay developed to the point it wasn't Saints Row any more. Why drive around the city when you can just fly?

And through all of those games, they never improved driving, shooting, or missions, just kept adding new crazy stuff instead.

Another openworld red faction would have slayed.

A janky development house finally ran out of juice.

I think SR3's decent sales gave Volition the wrong idea that people liked the direction it went in. Pretty much anyone that liked SR2 would have bought SR3 at launch without knowing ahead of time how radical the changes would be. And since overall the gameplay was still there people bought the DLC too once it was out. They also sold the 'Complete' edition later for peanuts which also probably inflated sales numbers.

3 was fun and certain parts of the game were beneficially streamlined. But the tonal shift was just too much, and in other aspects of the game too much was condensed or removed. It was definitely the death knell of series given its success.

Yeah but you can argue Skyrim and GTA V are a worthy dead horse to beat. Saints Row 3 was a stunted mule runt and Volition pulverized it into mush even though nobody wanted it.

I don't think this marketing spin would've flown with anyone outside of maybe Johnny Gat and even that would get grating. Shaundi got such a chilly reception for that same pivot despite being the main girl. For some people once the 3rd game rolled around she turned into a raging turbo b***h. It even became a notable plotpoint where the SR2 version gave herself the title of Fun Shaundi causing a decent amount of seething from the actual Shaundi. Whatever they were thinking with that marketing spin it will continue to serve as a history lesson of what happens when this kind of half brained idea blows up in your face.

Did it ever even work? I first saw it with Ghostbusters 2016 which was a massive flop and then it seemed like tons of marketers tried to copy its formula as if it wasn't one for some reason.

i'm sure it worked once or twice but attacking the "GTA but more niche" fans was a colossally bad move seeing as normalgays barely played the last moronic entries in the series

It wasn't a "colossally" bad move, it didn't have much of a negative impact.
The reason the game flopped was because it was gay shit not because fans got upset and decided to boycott (that never worked)
At worst it sounded like out of touch people trying to sound cool, nobody outside of Ganker babies got hurt

If your game studio wants to go that route when selling their new game, your product needs to be top-notch, I mean beyond expectations shit, like GTA level of "everyone-will-buy-it-anyway" level. Without that guarantee, you better off switch your marketing tactics. Otherwise, you might as well move your company out to Chernobyl now that your brand is just as radioactive then.

Even a big franchise like Battlefield can't afford to tell its fans to frick off, they tried that with V's awful "don't like, don't buy" marketing campaign and look what happened. I think out of all games in the world, only Pokémon and GTA could get away with that kind of marketing, but the marketing teams at TPC and Take-Two still aren't moronic enough to try it. That says it all, really.

I’ve never ever understood this ‘talking down the customer’ ideology, some people say it was Wendy’s fault but it’s been around long before that, why would you ever self sabotage your marketing in such a way, who does it appeal to, Isn’t the point of marketing to lie and manipulate people for sales? promises, hype, positivity for the product, a facade of absolute satisfaction. That’s proper marketing, this shit needs to stop

Social media. The need for attention and "likes". The problem is that most of the people liking this would have never bought the game anyway, it's just random anons, and the it turns away their actual fanbase who will just disengage. It's an illusion of engagement from people outside their actual customer base.

Wendy's also went after other corporate brands at the start, namely other fast food joints. Which was kind of enddearing to see Wendy's talking shit on Burger King.
It eventually went to just normal people, and like you said, they did a real good job of knowing who they could dunk on or not.

PR employees/companies saw that as "be sassy to customers and they'll love it" which eventually just turned to "be a b***h to customers and frick em, if they don't love it someone else will".

The dirty little secret is that it works but only if you try to upset left wingers/feminists.
If you try it the other way around those types just see that your product is still shitty and don't buy it.

            Anonymous

Depends on what specific group of people you're trying to piss off really or whether or not the controversy it brings will be beneficial in the long run or not. GTA back in 2000s kinda worked because it pissed off a bunch of 'no fun allowed' boomers who obviously don't play games like Jack Thompson or Leland Yee. It gets a little tricky when you're trying to navigate age groups who most likely will buy your products; potential customer base like the wokes or the chuds, or if they'll buy your products when you try to piss off either group or if you go far for either of them, being hostile to the other group only to get what is basically "thanks but no thanks" sorta attitude from the people you're trying to pander.
Overall, these types of hostile/cheeky marketing are too risky and confusing to navigate nowadays. You'd be better off sticking with the conventional wisdom of universal marketing, the good old "Here's this new game with this cool gameplay and setting, go buy it!" sorta pitch.

Most of the time I'd imagine it's just the result of marketing leaning into a mess someone else has made to try to make the best they can of a bad bottom line. If you have to sell a bad product and aren't in a position to change it, pushing hate with the product will sell more than just the product itself. Sometimes it's enough to flip something into profit, but just reducing loss is better than nothing.

The people who made the product bad just didn't care about the bottom line. They'd rather feel right about their actions than successful, and nothing makes them feel more right than people they don't like telling them they're wrong. And they're largely insulated from failure because they're zealots who truly believe they did the right thing. They tend to fail upwards and will just move onto the next studio forever.

The closure of Volition just means the thing he spent the last years of his life working on will never be finished. Volition planned to return staff to the SR2 patch once the reboot reached end of service, and then Embracer shut them down right when end of service happened.
Volition also gets too much shit for what was clearly a publisher lead project every step of the way. Most I’d say Volition did was the dogshit combat.

they are paying for it, so probably at every stage
while they are sometimes local publishing and distribution deals, having a publisher usually means you make a game for someone under their direction, basically you are owned by them for the period of that contract, they cover all operating costs in return for large profit margins or ip ownership

Bullshit, they published what people are saying is a Indie game, so they just swooped in at the end when it was done and gave them just enough money to keep it off of Xbox
And then were incredibly fortunate that it blew up in popularity (probably due to not having anything else to play) You know how many games Microsoft could 'publish' and keep off PlayStation if they really wanted too? Except they don't and either go all in by buying the studio and publishing all their games, paying salaries ect. I also have a feeling the last Final Fantasy Remake is coming to Xbox and that's the real reason they censored it (while advertising a more lewdly dressed Tifa at the same time) did I mention I absolutely despise this petty ass Californian company?

Helldivers isn't indie. What we're seeing isn't the rise of small indie games, they've been selling well for ages (usually not as much as AAA games, but they also spend 1/10000th the money that AAA does), but the rise of AA games.

Naah, their leaderships' direction fricked them over most of all. Shitposting on Ganker does jack shit.
Their last 4 released games were
    >Saints Row (2022)
    >Agents of Mayham (2017)
    >Saints Row: Gat out of Hell (2015)
    >Saints Row IV (2013)
They kept trying to coast on Saints Row's IP paying off as it did for the first 3 games. Open World games like that take a lot of time and budget and them trying to milk the same game over and over again was a powder keg waiting to burst. Most likely investors were easy to sell on another game in a series that sold well previously, but player appeal just doesn't work like that for every genre.
Quality of writing, change of what is "permissable edgyness", the original audience having grown, some possibly out of purile humour. They were fricked the moment they didn't switch to AA games to fish for their next big hit. Big companies fail because they have to.

the studio that got shitcanned was not the Volition that I care about. Same with Naughty Dog, same with Blizzard, same with Rocksteady Games.

They lose key people who make them that they are? They deserve to be executed.

SR3 is what gave the series mainstream success, but that's fickle. You can see it in the way Bethesda went from Skyrim, a huge success by all definitions of the word (unless you're a Morrowind or Oblivion fan) to Starfield, a game that had zero lasting impact and is only really liked by the most hardcore of nu-Bethesda fans.

If they actually tried to appeal to SR2 fans again, I don't doubt they would've at least enjoyed enough success to not get killed by Embracer. Even just fixing up the PC patch would've given them enough goodwill to keep going for a while. They literally made the worst choices possible for the studio, and from what we know from interviews with formers devs, they did it purely to spite SR2 fans. That kind of dedication is, if nothing else, impressive.

  146. 3 months ago
    Anonymous

Volition story is insane, lots of the dev team didn't even wanted to make Saints Row 1 back in the day. It was a studio with constant friction between themselves, I guess that's why their portfolio was so diverse.

Hearing this makes it look like the woke thing wasn't the issue but the internal management and the embracer fiasco. They could have survived a change of tone.

All this aside, I won't ever forget that they didn't continued Idol Ninja's Saints Row 2 Remastered project.

      Anonymous

      >internal management
It is almost entirely this. The Saints Row 4 that we got was originally a DLC for 3 titled "Enter the Dominatrix" while the 4th that was being worked on was meant to be a bit more of a return to roots but adding Red Faction type destruction. Because the team couldnt get the Red Faction destruction working in a way that management saw as fun they scrapped the whole project and made the DLC the sequel. This was also to ensure that they released on 7th gen before 8th gen launched so they didn't have to upgrade their game to match 8th gen standards.

This fat frick Jim is responsible for that decision and also is the genius behind the reboot.

The original Saints Row 4 was going to be the Saints versing gangs made up of Egyptians, Mongolians and Stalinists lead by clones of Cleopatra, Ghengis Khan and Joseph Stalin. It was all going to take place in a new city as well. https://youtu.be/v3-hDAeDfFw?si=5a8-Cb7ZOK9ZGRUs&t=2325

            >It's bizare as frick that they keep trying to push the Suicide Squad concept though
Disney is also now trying it with the Thunderbolts movie

              Anonymous

No they're not. Not even remotely on the same scale. There's one single Thunderbolts movie slated and nothing else related to the project in any other media.

And people seem to forget that GOTG was a group of literal who nobodies that no one knew of other than diehard comic fans that were super into Giffens/DNAs cosic marvel around 06 that kicked off with Annihilation, so marvel trying it again with Thunderbolts isn't some crazy idea that has no basis for an attempt.

Suicide Squad has failed on like 4 seperate occasions, 5 if you include the game, and they're STILL trying to push it as this big thing that everyone is excited about. It's like the head of WB or whatever legitimately has a hardon for the Suicide Squad brand and won't let it go. That's the only thing I can remotely assume is happening because that's all that makes sense.

Wouldn't be the first time a suit developed a fixation on a subfranchise and tried to push it in the face of overwhelming customer disinterest. For a while, one of the bigwigs at Marvel kept trying to sell the Inhumans as the next big thing (because the X-Men rights were still out on loan), despite the fact that literally no one likes or cares about the Inhumans.

                Anonymous

The Inhumans thing made sense though because like you said, they didn't have the movie distribution rights to the X-Men at the time, and it was peak MCU. So they tried to literally replace the X-Men with Inhumans in both the comics and in the MCU as a "frick you" to Fox. The minute they merged with Fox and the X-Men distribution was back under Disney/Marvel, the Inhumans fricked off and have basically been completely absent from the comics and the MCU.
That's different than whoever the frick keeps greenlighting these SS projects even though all but one of the 5 (now 6) of them has been a failure.

                >Why does Marvel even bother trying to write these shitty Versus lines?
Because the only comics that sell well anymore (and the only ones that have sold well for the last 20+ years really) are mega crossover event comics and newly minted #1s which are very easy to roll out as a result of said mega crossover events.
There's a few exceptions here and there with the super popular characters or the mega allstar authors, but there's outliers in every stat.

No I didn't, Volition killed themselves. They had Red Faction Guerilla and Saints Row 2 at basically the same time, then they totally fricked up Red Faction by removing all of the open world and destruction physics and started pushing Saints Row too far. I still liked SR3 and SR4 but instead of having a steady series they wanted to make every game a big leap over the previous and by SR4 they were already bastardising gameplay elements to try and make it work.

So they went from two strong series during the 7th console gen to uh... nothing by the 8th gen. We got an attempt to make a Hero Shooter that was pretty mediocre (not even terrible just not great) and some Red Faction remasters. All of the money from these two games got pumped into a fricking terrible Saints Row reboot and then embracer pulled the plug. Because Volition had nothing left to remaster and no series with any legs. Both times they tried to make something new it flopped and they had lost basically all fan goodwill.
