pretty sure it was the whole "one button game" design. they wanted you to be able to jump and still box, but they were completely committed to the stupidest fricking design decision ever made, only letting you have one type of input that isn't movement. So the only way they could make the two goals coincide was to put box on a timer so that your button press was still jump.

since Naka is banned from the industry, its clear Balan Wonderworld as a franchise is dead, but i would give ANYTHING for a remake of the game that at least fleshes out the world and cutscenes with the info in the novel.

I think the best way to categorize Yiik and Balan Wonderworld is "fascinatingly bad", they are not fun at all to play, but reading criticism of them is endlessly entertaining.
Most bad big-name games these days are bad for boring corporate reasons. Forced microtransactions, rushed release dates, greedy publishers desperately marketing for mass appeal above any and all risks, etc.
With Balan Wonderworld and YIIK you can at least appreciate there were human beings with souls behind the weird ideas they were attempting.
If you ignore the whole fever dream thing, the gameplay of the demo was horrendous which killed any hype it had.
The final game is more playable and is actually designed to be played in coop so you can combine powers together, one player can have a super jump and another can fly and they can cover super big distance that way.
Play the game solo and... well you have to pick between either being able to jump or being able to attack single there's no dedicated jump button, only a single button for the single action of the costume. Which mean you spend your time transforming between costume and it gets old super fast.
And then the level design is all over the place. The first world is pretty terrible and about 6-7 worlds are pretty good. Music is surprisingly decent too. But there's also a catch, the levels are made for backtracking with costumes from other levels but costumes work as lifes, if you run out of a particular costume, you'll have to farm that costume again and it's tedious as frick.
Overall if you were to play you'd just find it very boring

Realistically you'll always be fused because there's no split screen, you share the camera so moving away is a massive pain. There's also unused content for extra characters so maybe it was meant to be 4 player coop too

I think the best way to categorize Yiik and Balan Wonderworld is "fascinatingly bad", they are not fun at all to play, but reading criticism of them is endlessly entertaining.
Most bad big-name games these days are bad for boring corporate reasons. Forced microtransactions, rushed release dates, greedy publishers desperately marketing for mass appeal above any and all risks, etc.
With Balan Wonderworld and YIIK you can at least appreciate there were human beings with souls behind the weird ideas they were attempting.
Nobody here has actually played it, but from gameplay videos it's legitimately bad in a broken, boring, painful to play way.

They put all that effort into mocap dancing as if it were a Jet Set Radio but forgot to not make them in-synch.
If you ignore the whole fever dream thing, the gameplay of the demo was horrendous which killed any hype it had.
The final game is more playable and is actually designed to be played in coop so you can combine powers together, one player can have a super jump and another can fly and they can cover super big distance that way.
Play the game solo and... well you have to pick between either being able to jump or being able to attack single there's no dedicated jump button, only a single button for the single action of the costume. Which mean you spend your time transforming between costume and it gets old super fast.
And then the level design is all over the place. The first world is pretty terrible and about 6-7 worlds are pretty good. Music is surprisingly decent too. But there's also a catch, the levels are made for backtracking with costumes from other levels but costumes work as lifes, if you run out of a particular costume, you'll have to farm that costume again and it's tedious as frick.
Overall if you were to play you'd just find it very boring

Realistically you'll always be fused because there's no split screen, you share the camera so moving away is a massive pain. There's also unused content for extra characters so maybe it was meant to be 4 player coop too
