Gen 5 is better than 4 with online, but without it it's severely crippled because many features like Dream World and Join Avenue just flat out don't work.
Gen 5 with later Gen 4 as a pretty close second.

because pokemon has never deserved a 90+. gold silver and crystal (relative to when they were released) are the closest GameFreak has ever gotten.
This. Pokemon has never truly pushed the envelope as an RPG, literally all of the new things that they introduce are things that have been standard in other RPG/JRPGs for a very long time and they aren't even implemented that well.
They pushed the envelope with the first game by having a massive amount of playaable characters that you could trade
What rpgs in 1996 had
Modern setting
1:1 overworld
Over 100 party members
Contextualized random encounters
Multiplayer capabilities
And it was all on the go too. I would argue that the Gameboy games deserved all the praise they got at the time. Maybe not as much after the 90s for various reasons

I haven't bought a game since Sun. I refuse to encourage their less than 1 year development times. I refuse to buy remakes. The series needs to take a break, the gamefreak developers need to learn how to create a modern video game. The designs of the new pokemon need to go through a process that weeds out the shit we're getting. The remakes need to stop.
