You finally convince your Mom to buy membership and you pass through Taverley gates for the first time. This song starts to play
Soul
indeed
The world felt so big back then, I walked almost everywhere.
I remember doing lost city quest, buying a dragon dagger and thinking I was hot shit.
vgh...
bros.
>just ignore this bro
>what dya mean you're greeted with this on startup?
>ahhhhhh gay people!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
grow up
I never did
I brought my membership by mailing money via paybycash. Paying for online games was sorta taboo here
Never got a payment go missing or anything.
lmao, I remember paying by cash too.
Yep, even in the US there used to be an address that you could mail a crisp $5 bill to for a month of membership.
Take me the frick back.
this might be the one game I regret missing out on, frick it seemed so great
I think osrs is still worth giving a shot. It's not exactly the same game now but you may like it.
shills
its not the same game and never will be its a pozzed LGBT homosexual game with none of the old team working on it anymore.
Do you mean the Pride events you can ignore like any sane person?
Bounty Hunter (albeit the 5th(?) iteration), Forestry, a woodcutting overhaul, just came out. Desert Treasure 2 is coming, a whole new skill is being developed. Runelite, 117HD, and OSHD or w/e the 2008/9 client is called are thriving. Not to mention plenty of new content between 2014 and now, and thats not everything from this year alone.
And its still not RS3.
Homosexual homosexual gay candy ass you're fricking disgusting you queer b***h gay
Youre the most blatant closet case I have ever seen LOL
Less homosexuals like you in OSRS the better.
>a whole new skill is being developed.
Yeah right, just like warding? I was onboard when the app came out, made a new character, experienced all the old content from level one, had a blast with it, even enjoyed Kourend and all the stuff coming down the pipe. What happened with warding was a disgrace. It was absolutely perfect for old school, fulfilled an actual need in the game, meshed perfectly with other skills, and would've given some sick new mid-level mage armor. But 1/3rd of the playerbase is moronic, so even if sailing gets in this game is dead to me.
A big problem is the developers listen to the literal morons on Reddit.
>osrs new skill just sounds like a minigame to go around the ocean and find shit to do in other skills. the direction barely exists and everything will be bandwagoned by unfunny homosexuals on reddit which will result in the skill appealing to whatever redditors consider "good game design" in that moment
>rs3s new skill is a 4th combat style with progression tied to essentially a questline that requires multiple other skills to function on top of having choices to make with talents that will probably change how your rotation works
its kinda fricked up how rs3 is very steadily becoming the better game, especially if you play an ironman
RS3's problem is its absolute clusterfrick design. It's impossible to make heads or trails of it as a new player, even if you've been playing OSRS for a long time a lot of it will be confusing. There's so much shit everywhere and the game just throws you into it with basically no direction. OSRS kind of has this problem as well but there's a lot fewer systems to try to make sense of right away and you don't have to immediately contend with a terrible UI.
There's also the problem that it's wildly inconsistent in tone and quality of content. A lot of stuff from the pre-HD era has been basically untouched and feels like it's running in the wrong engine. Go do A Soul's Bane in RS3 for example. The jumpscare ghosts in the Fear section don't even work right.
Compare that to the remade Rune Mysteries that's fully voice acted and shit.
I also don't like the art direction RS3 has gone in but that's just personal preference I guess. OSRS has a very consistent artstyle and I think that's a big strength of it.
Overall in terms of content RS3 is probably the better game but I'd still rather play OSRS. It just feels better to play.
honestly its a fair thing to complain about. getting into rs3 really feels rough because a lot of areas are just cluttered with shit and seeing some requirements for certain quests and bosses feels dizzying
i still vastly prefer the content in rs3 compared to oldschool just because the barrier of entry is way lower to actually do anything meaningful. osrs basically requires that you max before walking into ToB or CoX. while ToA is a lot nicer to lower level accounts it still bothers me that i had to play the game for hundreds, probably thousands, of hours before i could even start doing the vast majority of bosses
it feels nice in rs3 that i could start a new account, get 60 in whatever combat style i like and fight 0 mechanic arch-glacor and barrows to make decent profit
Yeah, I agree. OSRS has a steep time investment requirement to do anything of note. I have hundreds of hours logged into this game and I've never done group content that wasn't a minigame. The hardest boss I've fought is the Hespori. It'll certainly be dozens if not hundreds more before I ever step into a raid.
Meanwhile RS3 has essentially pserver tier experience rates and a billion things for you to do even if you're not interested in high level PvM. It is the better game if you want to play casually by far.
>pserver tier rates
only on some skills
divination is pre-guardians of the rift runecrafting tier. they even removed one of the better xp rate methods recently. its kind of an issue ive been having personally where some skills are either given a bandaid fix to just skip the tedium (runespan) or completely reworked to be way better and more rewarding (mining/smithing)
and then you look at shit like fletching which has gone unchanged since EoC and agility which has had maybe 2 new courses added in 10 years
divination has the stupid fricking minigame u can do twice a day, guthixian caches
its one of the fastest per hour XP methods in the game of anything
its almost 3m xp/h if ur doing is quickly/properly at 99 and like 2m+ at like 70 or something
>one of the fastest xp/hr methods
yeah because you get to do it twice a day and then the rest of the day is spent at blisteringly fast 15k xp/hr methods everywhere else until you can go to the hall of memories
yeah u just do it when u happen to be on and u can and then don't worry about doing regular divination, unless u need energy, and that point its a whole different ballgame
div will be ur first 99 if u actually are on top of caches and probably one of ur first, if not first as well, even if u are lazy as frick with them
The gameplay mockup video for Sailing is hilariously over-ambitious. They started talking about PvP in the middle of sailing and I scoffed. What is this, fricking Sea of Thieves? The whole thing sounds less like a skill and more like a new Leagues mode.
I don't expect the final product to be anything more than a touched up Fishing Trawler that can also teleport you to some new areas.
in a fair and just world shamanism wouldve passed the poll and would have been much more realistic to implement
cant wait for the reddit post in a few months saying that 80% of sailing is canceled like how they just canceled the curse pray book
Sailing will be great, amazing, wonderful, fantastic, incredible when it comes out in 2035 lol
The voting system is moronicly flawed and the playerbase genuinely thinks it is "protecting" this two decade old game from "going in the wrong direction again" by making sure the devs add nothing of substance for months and months at a time.
There's no good reason Warding shouldn't have been added, the playerbase is just glue-eating fricking moron Redditors.
Old School Runescape is a thing, and its going strong. Come join us
>People getting false bans for no reason while bots are doing fricking Inferno
I'll stick with trying the clusterfrick RS3 content
Literally never had this happen nor anyone in my sizable clan, it must be botters complaining with a extreme minority of false positives.
>Implying that majority of the "players" who were reporting false bans on Reddit and other social media weren't bot users/creators themselves, as per usual
Inferno bots like others are a plague yes, but RS3 isnt any better in that regard. Ironman modes are cool though
forestry is epic
You missed it. If you didn't play then you won't understand it. I still play RS3 because of the memories, but now I mostly play for the quests. Maxed my OSRS account and realized it is a fricking meme game that is controlled by reddit and the quests are fanfiction of tier of writing.
The early days of f2p OSRS still captured some of the magic of the old days, not perfectly but still lots of people playing around.
Today f2p is 90% bots, that nostalgic experience can longer be lived anymore, rip.
there's so many fricking quests in rs3, you can't walk ten feet without tripping over five of them
recently I've been going for questcape in OSRS and it's fricking upsetting how many dead ends are in that game, storylines left incomplete for YEARS because hurrdurr their sequels weren't in the backup and we can't take a couple days to port them over because HURRR WE'D HAVE TO GET A VOTE ON IT
The only time you could have enjoyed RS is when you were 15 and on summer vacation. Otherwise no functional human being has that much free time to dump into clickin on trees and shit for hours. Anybody playing this as an adult in the current year is running on nostalgia fumes
Many new ways to play OSRS and train different skills have been introduced and most of them consist of playing it like you would any other MMO. Yes you can sit clicking on a tree for hours but you could break it up by doing other activities. Nostalgia is a very weak argument and you'd realize it if you gave the game a proper chance. Otherwise, RS3 is great for those who prefer a faster and more action oriented way of playing.
i never played it growing up and i'm a 33 year old man and started playing last year and it's currently the game i play the most
>no functional human being has that much free time to dump into clickin on trees and shit for hours.
True. I tried OSRS and had a nice little nostalgia hit. Then I got my my skills to around level 70 and it all turned into a painful grind again. Would have to commit hours to gameplay that's as fun as a data entry job if I wanted to experience any new content. Dropped.
OSRS purely exists for people who had shit accounts back in 2010 to get max capes and make billions with their nolifing and minmaxing.
>Can never go back to World 12 Fight Pits with the lads.
Just skill on your second monitor while you do something else like everyone else does.
Or I could play a game that's actually fun. I chose that option.
I swear realising MMORPGs are bullshit has allowed me to experience so many good games and films and other activities. MMOs are a job with no payoff. You're literally on the same level as a Ganker janny.
I mean you do you buddy. Yes skilling is bullshit and takes much too long. That doesn't mean I waste all my time on it and don't play other games. Hell, OSRS is great as a "grind simulator" you put in on the background as a slow dopamine dripfeed while you work or literally play a different game.
>grind simulator
>second monitor
>still worth giving a shot
shiggiediggie
Imagine grinding only to see them do this to your game.
Can't think of people worse than gacha players doing "pulls" and free "dailies" other than 2023 jagex players mainly being 'nnoids.
As
have said if you didn't play during the rs2 days (before eoc some would argue before squeal of fortune but it was easily ignorable) then you missed on the real rs experience. Playing activities/minigames with your buddies and the clan camping in the wilderness where deaths are full loot searching every orifice for players and fighting for your territory and winning against higher levelled and bigger teams surviving with 2 hp with barely any energy and healing food left. You don't grind, you level up naturally at the same rate with clan members around your level while hitting enemies in a pvp zone.
wtf they added all this since 2007?
installing nao
Barrows-era Runescape as its endgame was peak Runescape. Everything after it was shit.
moron
>never did monkey madness
>just had dragon dagger(poisoned of course) for months until I got an abyssal whip
>account gets banned for botting when I never knew how to bot
Ok.
>B-but I never botted!
>I only used a autoclicker!
I didn't know how to set up software autoclickers but I had a lego mindstorms set and build a robot that would left click my mouse nonstop for me.
Just adopt a son and teach him to grind for you or else no food.
>spend hours convincing Dad to buy me members
>he finally caves and buys it
>log into Lumby on the most populated members world
>say "wow there's barely any people here, this place is usually packed"
>dad says "yeah I bet you're regretting it now huh"
>say "heck no this is awesome"
>Empty lumbridge
>Referring to the fact other players are doing better things in game than lumby loitering while also being contrarian.
Kino moment.
top 5 most soulful games to ever exist.
I think it's pretty neat that as kids me and my friends were unknowingly learning about how economies function on a conceptual level while playing it.
Post your favorite osrs music
there can only be one https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VNW9TAwImBY
There are some great new tracks too
I really enjoyed the orchestral collection https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LBIxzGLXUqo
this was the login music when I first started playing
I remember this one
I know everyone talks about it as much as Sea Shanty 2, but Scape Main is just chefs kiss. https://youtu.be/HL8oQw0nm0M
I also love Garden so much. Hung out in Varrock all the time, thinking I was cool.
This track is criminally underrated, I guess because it's in a area that rarely anyone goes to.
The bit at 1:25 makes it for me.
Mudskipper melody
Dream
Sea shanty 2
Medieval
Camelot
Oh! How could I forget this one
Got this one stuck in my head from Zalcano pet hunting
homie, post the original midis.
homie those use the wrong soundfont, I posted the original tracks.
Damn, ive been a naive moron for all these years...
Low level wildy pking theme
based, I can remember summer of '04 so vividly hearing this on repeat, absolutely magical.
>Last week of middle school
>parents constantly yelling at me to get off
>No AC, computer room hot as frick
>2 friends and I on ventrillo sweating our balls off playing as the sun sets and pking at north east varrock wildy entrance for hours
>Not a care in the world while we snack on pizza and soda and fire strike noobs to death
loved this one a lot
book of spells sounds so serene and wonderful and puts me right back to childhood
and of course the usual like newbie melody, book of spells, autumn voyage, flute salad etc
flute salad and book of spells are a big part of what convinced me this game was worth my time and wasn't just a big meme
>remember buying a runescape guide book at a scholastic book fair, reading about it then making an account
holy kinoludo
I got girls on RS to show me bob and vagane.
I think one of the girl still plays RS3
It drives me fricking nuts how all the RS2 music on youtube uses the wrong soundfont
holy shit I though I was going crazy, is that what happened?
Yes, all the uploads with that yellow text use the wrong sound font and they're the ones that come up the most.
It uses the default midi soundfont, there are some videos with the correct osrs soundfont and the wiki also has all the tracks with the osrs soundfont too.
why don't u just go download the tracks they released since they are royalty free there is an official download
Shut up OP... Shut up... I was thinking of this the other day. There is no going back. No matter how many times I try to get into old school, I will never get those days back.
>be like 11 years old
>newish member
>saturday morning, time to do a new quest
>underground pass sounds cool
>my absolute realization when I was in no way prepared for the horrors that awaited me
>finish the quest in the evening just before dinner
I went in that tunnel as a boy and emerged a man.
God only knows how people did that shit when there was no home teleport
To this day I will argue that there is no better ambiance and quest progression in any MMO than there is in Underground Pass. The music: kino, the story: kino, the setting: kino, the exploration: kino, the giant chasm with the dwarves and spider and pseudo boss battle with iban: KINO
You sound like a pro. I remember that quest taking me multiple days to finish, I too was like 10 or something years old.
Here's that track with the original soundfont
Jesus I thought I was going fricking mad hearing the others I remember these songs sounding 100% dreamlike.
>was never a member
We all miss some good times, heck I regret never experiencing WoW back in 2004-2009
I'm pretty sure I cried a little that day, I'm also pretty sure I never took a step over that line until she stopped paying.
I made a powerpoint presentation in order to convince my parents to raise my allowance enough for runescape membership.
I squashed any idea of me playing another online game by wanting to play runescape member, but I had a grand time.
>That first time you walk all the way to castle wars as a kid
What show ?
Where the frick do you even download the proper Runescape soundfont? I've randomly had all of the midi files for years but they sound like ass without a soundfont.
If you want the original tracks you can download the .ogg files from the OSRS wiki
This. Pretty easy to scrape them with JDownloader.
Give praise to Almighty Saradomin!
>spend weeks getting my book of Zamorak
>finally get the pages and put the book together and show it to my friend I met on RS
>friend tells me I'm going to hell irl because I'm basically worshipping the devil instead of the good good (Saradomin)
Zamorak book was also my first book. I too was an edgy kid once. Not to worry.
I once reported a guy for having the Godsmack in his name, because I wanted to be a P-Mod. I kinda knew that it was band name, but my brother had to remind me. I stopped being a homosexualr snitch after that.
I REALLY fricking wish OSRS wasn't so god damn full of bots. It's the only game that I constantly get the urge to start playing again, but it's just too demoralizing seeing all the bots around. I've tried other MMOs such as WoW, Guild Wars, even New World, and none come close to Runescape for me.
This is more demoralizing than any bot could ever be. Terrorists such as this glbohmo corpo must never be supported
After maxing I just lost all motivation to play 2bh bros postmax syndrome is a real thing
That's when the real game begins though.
OSRS is still based
Too bad the game is pozzed and full of homosexualry now
2002 player here, I remember having so much fun trading lobsters I fished up for certificates and haggling with people to pay me more for them.
Where in the hell did all those years go?
>fricking certs
Man I was too young to figure that shit out, 2001-2003 was a blur.
How the frick do you fit so much soul into one game
for me it was picking flax at seers village on the first evening and finding out two of my buddies also convinced their parents to get them membership too
I kicked the cabbage all the way to Ooglog just to summon the cabbage god
>all of my music tastes were formed from old RS2 PK videos and skateboarding films
>Skateboarding is no more a cultural phenomenon.
I miss some of the small things about the 2000s like this. But I don't think I can handle video games going HD but with drab colors and everything being super serious/"mature"/edgy.
>tfw sold my bank before i quit years ago
whats a good way to rebuild
just buy some bonds
Shoutout to sal’s realm. Idk how you were supposed to figure out half of those quests. The world will never be the same as this time again.
I only used the quest hints they would link on the official RS website, because I was a dumb kid who didn't think to google quest guides. Pretty sure they were time-gated too, so you could only get a handful in a day.
You then immediately get killed by the white wolves and lose all your gear.
underground pass was absolutely kino still vividly remember doing it 14 years ago but all the early elf quests were good
I'm excited for deadman coming back, not because I actually like deadman, but because I always a few hundred mil the first couple weeks when EVERYONE is playing.
I'm curious how player numbers will be though. There's much less of a huge one person prize to "try" and win, and even though they're actually feasible to attain for a variety of people now, they're much smaller and that may not incentivize clans, who are the only people who really stick with it after a few weeks.
>Arr-DOYN
I was pronouncing it wrong for a good 15 years
I still say Arr-dohne. Frick the official pronunciation.
A-R (like an american a-r-15) doug knee
skim a tar
Will desert treasure 2 be good?
Considering how hard they have flubbed literally everything else about it, including scrapping a polled for, approved, and then needlessly changed prayer book, I have no hopes for it to be even remotely decent. The rewards look like generic vertical progression, who gives a frick.
>Prayerbook scrapped at the last minute because testers said it was just 'better' than the default prayers, even though the whole point is for them to be more powerful but have risky drawbacks
>Rest of the rewards are just more generic BiS-for-this-patch slop
It's not looking good.
>chatting with randos in catherby fishing lobs all day
>swarming moss giants in the varrock sewer and trying to get the rare drop
>Doing monkey madness and sweating in terror as poison darts were flying at you from everywhere as you ran into the village
>hanging out in front of lumby castle on w1 or 2 and doing emotes with randos
>mining in the fally mines and fleeing for your life when a king scorpion aggrod
God I miss it so much. Frick the GE
>Only place you can see people chatting nowadays is Wintertodt
>It's all redditor trannies making the cringiest, grossest sex jokes ever and pretending to be on hard drugs
Better off muting public chat.
I recently joined a clan because I met them doing Forestry and talking while cutting trees.
Was kinda cool.
Did you fall for any scams?
Be honest now
I drank the wine.
I got my armor trimmed once. It was a valuable lesson for a young man to learn. I just wish I didn’t do it on my sister’s account
I fell for the mole scam, where they help you down and tell you to snuff out your candle
I somehow managed to escape with like 10hp I would have lost my entire bank lmao
I lost my bank to a phishing website, but I've never been scammed in-game.
I honestly don't remember. I'm SURE I fell for a "follow me this place is super cool but bring your best gear cause it's hard!" wildy scam in the early 2000s when I first started, but I was moronic and didn't trust anyone even as a kid because I was antisocial and moronic already. I never got ripped off for my gear in any sort of super meaningful way, I never lost an account, none of that shit.
Well, that's not true, an account I made in 2015 to play OSRS and never used for anything BUT osrs, with 2fa and a bank pin and a unique pass got recovered last year. I still have no idea how, but everyone insists it was somehow my fault. Doesn't show up on any leak lists, wasn't connected to steam, wasn't connected to my amazon account, it's just a straight up solitary account, and still somehow, someone at jagex said "hmmm, yes, this portuguese IP clearly is the original owner who logged in from the same static IP they've had for 7 years not even 15 minutes beforehand, I'll just give them complete control and remove the 2 factor authentication, because they only added it just so it takes longer to log in, no other reason"
Anyway that's why I just buy gold and bonds from chinks now. $4 a month for membership is better than even the unlapsed original $5.99/mo I pay on my rs3/osrs maxed main.
I was the one doing the armor trimming back in those days
If you got an addy skirt outside of barb village on a sunday sometime in 2007, screw you buddy.
Never but I did scam people with a really dumb thing. I'd note bones and sell them as big bones and for some reason barely anyone even realized. Never got banned and made enough to buy all the rares so made billions.
The only scam I ever fell for is playing the ~~*oldschool*~~ game. Shouldn't have returned back if they would just destroy the legacy.
>picrel
>based
>epic
Filthy lying gays
>omega based
going to deep wildy
>based
going to morytania
going to karamja
>normie
going to taverley
>looked up a guide online
used the edgeville lever to ardougne
>cringe
going to the desert
>never went back for membership content
>forgot about runescape by time I got my first job
Maybe I'll fix that someday
Still fricking weird that sound was a paid feature in there
also all the MEMBERSHIP ITEM stuff
I couldn't convince her. I used to go to that gate and hope that one day I could go through it too. When I turned 18 I finally bought it with my own card but by that time all my friends had quit and the game was way worse.
Thanks for reminding me
I planned out my first day with membership for weeks. By the end of it I was nearly in tears because I felt like I was wasting my money by soaking in the sights and sounds.
I quit about a month later because the member content turned out to be kinda underwhelming.
Still debating between OSRS and RS3
Most of my time is gonna be on a phone
Game didn't have music back then you flithy fricking zoomer.
