Yeah, played it a few years ago on the Steam DOSbox version and it was fricking brilliant. Really good game. I will play it again soon now that it has a proper source port.
Played it recently.
Was that game updated over the years?
I don't remember the "EWOKS SUCK" message being plastered across multiple textures or the "1 ton of rubber ducks" markings on the crates in the DOS release.
could it be that the pixels looking huge on DOS made the texture text harder to discern?
Now we play with high resolution mods so that text actually looks like text
>9 years old >wanted x wing vs tiefighter >parents buy me Yoda Stories for Christmas '97 >dissapointed >parents are like...oh it's just as good >plays for like 5 minutes >computer gets fricked up >local computer shop is closed for a week >parents decide to ship it somehwere else >takes like a month to get it back
>disappointed with yoda stories
dude what the frick
that game was the shit
sometimes I play the game boy color version because I liked it so much back then
Yes, it's kind of shit for a doom clone. 90% of enemies are just variations on a guy with a blaster, dark troopers are pure cancer, platforming is ass. Not really worth beating.
has anyone ever found the small ship in level 2?
if you enable god mode and weapons at the start of talay tak base and do a minejump over the wall at the start of the level you'll get to a hidden area the game uses to store the ship after the cutscene, I was obsessed with that when I was a kid
yeah it's not much of a step above the typical doom clone though, almost all enemies being standard stormtroopers makes it a bit boring after a while and some levels are a bit too confusing with puzzle switches that are easily missed etc but it undeniably has that original trilogy vibe
dark forces jedi knight is the one that really needs the remaster
I feel like it stops being Dark Forces altogether once you reach Outcast. Even though the first few levels require you to use guns, the guns are are inaccurate, shitty, unsatisfying, and they feel like an afterthought. Outcast is all about third-person action with the saber and jedi powers (which it doesn't do particularly well either) and that sets it far apart from its Dark Forces grandparent.
>cg_dynamiccrosshair 0
literally makes things worse.
Without the dynamic crosshair you literally never know what your gun is actually being aimed at and no amount of offsetting will ever fix that as the guns in Outcast do not shoot at any particular point on the screen.
Dynamic looks and feels weird but at least it's fairly precise.
I literally started a new playthrough of Outcast yesterday, disabled the dynamic crosshair among the other things I did to make it run better, and had to re-enable it again as shooting things became utterly unbearable.
That being said, guns in Outcast are weird but IMO it only plays into its identity of being "a different" "FPS" game.
Accounting for projectile travel time is difficult when 99% of other games just do hitscan or fast enough projectiles they might as well be hitscan and the offset uncentered aim isn't helping but getting used to it and becoming better at handling guns feels nice.
I like Duke Nukem, it has one of the best levels in industry, and I consider Dark Forces 2 levels to be even better than Duke's. DF2 level design is best in the industry, why would I prefer "solid' df1 to it? >awkward lightsaber fighting
Just don't use it.
I've only played DF2 once, but I'm pretty sure you're forced to duel in the boss fights to some degree, which I never enjoyed. I also remember the level design being really confusing at times, and there was a lot of climbing on ledges. It never won me over. DN3D is way better in my opinion
And I meant "solid" in the sense of well-made and consistent. It's a great game as far as I'm concerned, both in gameplay and level design (with a few exceptions)
As a kid who played DF2 at the time of its release, there were a few things that really impressed me:
>Live action cutscenes. "It's just like getting a new Star Wars film!" >Huge outdoor levels added to the sense of grand adventure and also recalled the locations seen in the films. >CD quality OST, big deal at the time >Force powers and a rudimentary morality system - both new
Unfortunately, it doesn't hold up today because
>uuh those textures? Yikes-erino! >it often turns into a boring game of Where Do I Go Next? running around without enemies to fight >Trying to select force powers with the F1-F5 keys in the middle of a saber duel is always a pain in the dick and leads to lots of mistakes >The live action cutscenes are risible and below the standard of most children's television
>uuh those textures? Yikes-erino
Turn off the texture filtering for retro feel >where do I go
Filtered >f1-f5
Rebind, there are plenty of keys >live action
Still better than nu-trilogy
I don't care much for technology outside of things that add to the experience, like working mirrors in the Build Engine or the dynamic light and stencil shadows in FEAR. The low-res textures can actually be a plus if it's part of a solid aesthetic. My problems are entirely with the gameplay, which, as I said, never won me over
we didn't know how to get it running because we were children but yeah my brother bought it from the bargain bin from the free
record shop a billion years ago
Better, at least they were droids this time and felt threatening. Still not the base-leveling superweapons that DF depicted but they felt like a halfway point between the Phase 1 and 2 troopers.
That's odd, Nightdive usually does a great job with older games, but some of the stuff in the trailer does look pretty fricking bad. I'll hold off until it's out, but currently the source port seems like the obvious better choice
They should still do a better job of QC on their own games, or people will start thinking twice about buying from them again. A studio like Nightdive should put a lot of value in customer goodwill, because they're never going to see mass-market appeal with their inherently-niche titles
>now that there're sourceports a replay with mouselook is on my short list
Do it. It's great fun and I didn't have a single issue when I played it last, unlike that older source port that kept fricking up in various ways

Just the shareware version that came on my X-Wing disc but yeah
Of course. I played all of the Jedi Knight games
Dark Forces isn't a Jedi Knight game, Jedi Knight is a Dark Forces game.
>the reasom why Kyle was a great soilder was because he was force sensitive
Get fricked lmao
Kyle became force sensitive after taking so many stormtrooper souls
Yeah, played it a few years ago on the Steam DOSbox version and it was fricking brilliant. Really good game. I will play it again soon now that it has a proper source port.

Want to play again, but massively better? https://theforceengine.github.io/

i still have my original copy
fondest memories of windows 95 era
Of course I did. Right when it came out. Frick I’m old.
If it's the game I think it is, yes. Gonna look up a video to confirm.

Yes, but I'm at a point in my life where I'm trying to purge star wars from my memories.
Yes, it's kind of shit for a doom clone. 90% of enemies are just variations on a guy with a blaster, dark troopers are pure cancer, platforming is ass. Not really worth beating.
it was way more advanced than doom at the time, you could aim up and down, jump, weapons had secondary fire mode etc
yeah, the PS1 version. the draw distance was a bit doodoo but I managed to finish it.
Yeah. Would like to play it again in co-op, but I guess the best opportunity for that is DBP24 for Doom
I played this as a kid an could never beat the sewer level
I was too scared of that one even with god mode on so I always LASKIP'd it
yeah it was one of my first games
I absolutely cannot stand the framerate.
I get a massive headache after any play session.
try the force engine port, it adds high resolution, proper framerates and fixes the geometry distortion when looking up and down
Several times, yes. Most recently in the new source port, which worked out great. It's a lot of fun
stahp rebelscum
I'll give you some rebel's cum, b***h

Say it
Say what? I never hated anything he did
I have nothing to apologise for because I always knew the prequels were the best SW films and that selling to Disney was a mistake.
Based.
The prequels are kino.
CHISS PUSSY
The prequels are fricking awful and the changes made to the original trilogy is a crime against art
The prequel series is and was always excellent and I'm tired of hearing its not. What Disney did was a travesty.
your movies suck, george
Prequels always were good.
Star Wars is evil, and so are you, George.
you fricked up you fat necked frick
You're an butthole for locking away the original versions of the original trilogy and selling out to the mouse.
I haven’t even played light forces
Currently playing JK2
It's not Dark Forces in name but it still checks out, right?

yes, it was quite neat at the time for a doom clone.
I have, way back when.
It was alright, but Dark Forrces 2 was much better.
>Dark Forrces 2 was much better
Dark Forces II: Jedi Knight was my very first FPS
>star dark forces wars
Dark Forces 2 is close to GOAT, but what's the appeal of first one? Also, considering death star plans, I prefer Rogue One canon.
DF2 has all that awkward lightsaber fighting. DF1 is just a solid Build Engine-esque shooter. If you like DN3D, I don't see why you wouldn't enjoy DF

I remember having an autistic obsession with Dark Troopers as a kid and then being massively disappointed by the playable ones in Battlefront
How did you feel about their depiction in The Mandalorian?
Better, at least they were droids this time and felt threatening. Still not the base-leveling superweapons that DF depicted but they felt like a halfway point between the Phase 1 and 2 troopers.
Have you ever played the Dark Times II: Rising Son mod? You can play as Phase Is in those.
The night dive version won't have perspective correction. So it'll warp when you look up and down. Also has AI upscaled cutscenes and enemy sprites.
Absolutely disgusting.
That's odd, Nightdive usually does a great job with older games, but some of the stuff in the trailer does look pretty fricking bad. I'll hold off until it's out, but currently the source port seems like the obvious better choice
Their A team is working on Turok 3 and the rest are on this. Probably a very small team. So they're not going all out. It's bare bones.
They should still do a better job of QC on their own games, or people will start thinking twice about buying from them again. A studio like Nightdive should put a lot of value in customer goodwill, because they're never going to see mass-market appeal with their inherently-niche titles

had to upgrade to 8 meg of ram for it
yes.

outdated, irrelevant, deprecated. the game is being ported to kex
