Unless your hobby is tinkering with computers you'll have an awful time with Linux. It's a really shit OS for daily use but they will insist it's completely fine
moron here. Started Linux with Kubuntu like two years ago. It's been fine. Literally google your the error that your flavor of terminal spits out and there's a stackoverflow fix for it. You just have to be incapable of problem solving or have a crippling fear of using terminal commands to think that Mint or Ubuntu is unusable and unlearnable.
last time i updated everything my update manager told me to update my computer wouldnt boot into my system anymore, id get a blackscreen on boot and had to boot into a previous kernel or something (i forget what its actually called) and i still dont know why any of this happened nor do i know how to prevent it

Looks like you need proton GE for it to work. I recently installed this. Took 5 minutes.

Follow simple install instructions and enjoy.
Not OP, I just tried to open a web browser. 3 hours later I gave up. Never have a seen a worse OS, it's just not possible, opening a preinstalled web browser should never crash an OS
>attempt to download game directly on my computer >shit lags and spreads its ass contents all over my screen >it just doesn't work.
Why would i spend my precious time learning to use a shitty OS that can't do basic tasks without lots of work and learning. my debloated version of windows... just works.
if you are really that much of a homosexual, just download a version without windows defender. i prefer having it because i download lots of pirated games.
Ok, now force a progam to run as windowed on linux. i will watch you try
You can permanently disable defender too if you know what you're doing, but Linux is still a better OS.

Mesa flipped on raytracing by default as of the current release, anon. NVIDIA supported RTX on linux from the beginning. DLSS always worked for NVidia because it's exclusive to their cards.
HDR doesn't work correctly on Windows half the time either because nobody can fricking standardize how it's supposed to work, but you're right that it doesn't work here at the moment.

Anon, all of those work, you could even play ray traced doom on deck if you wanted to murder your battery life. HDR does have caveats as it's an ongoing work, but you can get some stuff working if you roll your sleeves

Does every antilinux poster live like 10 years in the past?
Anon, you learned to use Windows, you didn't have the knowledge from the womb. Everything has a learning curve, so the whole "why do I need to learn X" doesn't work.
I have no trouble with Linux and Windows, I simply learned. MacOS is dogshit however, literally awful if you're an advanced user.
The only thing I would agree with is that the difficulty can get high depending on the distribution and that can put off users and I can accept that excuse.
But don't ever fricking use the "why do I need to learn" card.

You know, I was honestly thinking about switching to Mint and went to Ganker to ask if there were any cool Linux unique programs. You know, I thought that they'd have something that wasn't on Windows.
They just acted like I was trying to imply something negative about Linux, and I quickly realized Linxugays are just crabs in a bucket and don't actually even try to make the OS better. They just talk about how M$ is worse.

Diablo 2 (classic, not the troonmake) doesn't have windowed mode. and you can't just go in properties and type -w, and i couldn't find any explanation of how to force progams into windowed. i had to downgrade to version 12.0 and install a resolution mod just so i could play the game at a decent resolution. in this case fullscreen vanilla gets stretched.

Linux is the kernel
I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU + Linux.
before microsoft cucked their own activation system in windows 10 you had to download a cracked iso from the ruskies and I wasn't dealing with that shit
You didn't need to. XP has VL edition that activated with a single key just fine, Vista and 7 can be activated either with SLIC table injection in BIOS or by using KMS on Professional editions. 8/8.1 only left KMS, I think.
Windows 11 is fricking awful and if a 12 ever happens it will be even worse. I'm in the noah's ark stage where I'm rounding up all the games I can and migrating over.
Some games work but you’re going to have to dual boot for most of the multiplayer games you play which begs the question why even have it in the first place
You need arch to get all the bleeding edge technology for your gaming needs, it's fairly lightweight and the install is pretty straighforward. You could get it running games in just 30 minutes, including the time it takes to download the .iso
Haha, I tried installing it to a separate HDD to try it out with zero consequences. This shit fricked it's way into my BIOS and made permanent additions, which I now need to disable everytime I change shit in my BIOS
>Install Half Life >Fullscreens on the wrong monitor >Won't let me set the monitor
Whats the point of a native game when they never fricking work right
I told you all.
If you wanna play videogames, stick to windows.
Linux is a workstation. If you don't need it, don't install it, unless you're just messing around.
what if i want to use it for the sake or using something different
I acknowledge it as "messing around". It's okay but don't be surprised if some games won't work. And don't bother because i know the replies by now. We get it, everything you wanted to play worked so far.
OP plays multiplayer games and is fricking moronic to think any games outside of CS:GO was going to work with anti cheat being compatible with Linux lol.
Until companies can write a separate anti cheat software that works with Linux, penguins bros are stuck with single player games only
Did you run it without DXVK? Because it should be at worst a few % difference with it.

dx9-11 to Vulcan translation layer with performance focus, vkd3d is similar but for dx12.
Proton has it bundled and enabled by default, but if you run LoL through a separate Wine build you probably have to add it manually.
When linuxshills say that games work they’re not lying it’s just that they only play city builders and singleplayer rpgs from the 2000s because they have autism
Last game I've played on Linux was Xenonauts
I've also been playing Pokemon Art Academy with Citra, it's got really cute art. I wanted to play the Disney one too, but the screen glitches out making drawing impossible.
I installed linux last wednesday on an impulse and so far, everything works much better than expected. Only some of the games I tried in steam didn't work out of the box, but I don't mind.
Because they're lying.
They're insecure that they're too lazy to move from their bloated duct tape propaganda OS so they try to relieve that anxiety by projecting their fears here.
>install arch >frick around for an entire weekend setting up my laptop >after sifting through documentations and doing research myself, because I have more than 2 braincells capable of working together, I finish my setup that I envisioned >after that everything, unironically, just works
Aside from a couple odd games that needs an extra line of argument to work perfectly (that I can find with a 5 minute google search), I didn't have any issues in almost a year. Originally I was a bit scared due to the infamy of linux difficulties but after I tried it out myself I am adamant that anyone who shits on linux and says "nothing fricking works" has the willpower and the intelligence of a fricking goldfish.
ubuntu. i have a textbook that came with a CD with a linux environment, but it didn't work so i installed ubuntu instead.
needless to stay, i didn't stick with it for very long.
>ctrl+f ubuntu >0 results
Why didn't any of you recommend the one linux distro that's practical, easy to use and made for humans?
I don't use it anymore. I hate Gnome. I like Mint Cinnamon better and have used KDE Plasma with Arch, Fedora, and Opensuse.
Nowadays I would just recommend Kubuntu and not regular Ubuntu because Gnome is ass.
Either Kali from a Youtube hacking course or unironically installing Gentoo for the memes.
Installing gentoo wasn't so bad. It actually does teach you very well how to partition for your install and what basic components a linux OS needs to function. I forgot both of those topics...
First Distro I tried using at my home computer was Garuda Linux, then some Arch based Linux from Mexico (it was absolutely abhorrent) and then Endeavour OS. Fell in love with it and it ended my distro hopping.
i upgraded to linux from windows 7 a couple years ago and it's been excellent. any technical issues weren't too different from the usual PC gaming fare and were usually even easier to solve considering there was usually a command to paste into a terminal instead of a very indian youtube video.
>sick of windows bullshit >delete windows >time to install arch linux >copy paste commands from wiki to terminal >everything just works >its been 2 years of everything just working
not my problem
It's not Valve, it's Ganker. They think that if everyone switches to Linux then Linux will magically get better, when in reality Linux sucks because of tragedy of the commons - if it is nobody's job to fix something, then it will never get fixed.
it's hilarious how you have to exaggerate to make windows seem hard to use like anyone is going to fall for it when everyone is already using windows and knows how wrong you are
there's a reason why windows dominates the market while linux needs permanent begging and still no one uses it
>needs permanent begging
No by all means please stay on Windows. I'd rather not have corporate technolords suddenly focusing on a unified UX or unified whateverthefrick in Linux due to increased market share.
My only problems, at the moment are: >can't launch my modded New Vegas install w/ the latest script extensions ported over using the year-old rockerbacon mo2 installer, stuck to using it on Windows. >Garry's Mod crashes without explanation using the CEFCodecFix during highly-engaging roleplaying sessions, just werks 100% on Windows >AC Valhalla can only do 30 fps for some arbitrary reason, unplayable. Odyssey will work just fine.
I don't know what to do.
>can't launch my modded New Vegas install w/ the latest script extensions
Install vcrun 2015, 2019 and dotnet 48 via winetricks. Set up casefolding on your drive and casefold your prefix, whereever you installed the game and your MO2 appdata folder.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/558977/how-to-enable-new-in-kernel-5-2-case-insensitivity-for-ext4-on-a-given-directory
>ported over using the year-old rockerbacon mo2 installer
Never heard of this.
So, hoops I have to go through in a hail-mary, provided I don't copy my 150+ gig /mods folder over to the ext4 partition and only install the utilities. I tried setting up casefolding on my already-existing filesystem but tune2fs couldn't find it despite me pointing directly at it.
>I tried setting up casefolding on my already-existing filesystem but tune2fs couldn't find it despite me pointing directly at it.
It has to be unmounted first. If it's not a secondary drive, then reboot into a live iso and do it there. Then you make an empty folder (like .wine_nv for the wine prefix) and turn on case insensitivity for it. You should probably reinstall the game and MO2 into that to be sure it'll work right.
Linux was made to run in a virtual container. So just use Virtual Box.
inb4 my privacy!1!!! Just use passthrough internet directly to virtual box and disable it for windows. You can still pretend to be a haxxor by using the vm in full screen.
You get the best of both worlds with ZERO compatability issues.
Games run natively with 0 performance or compatability issue.
Linux runs natively in vm with 0 performance or compatibility issue.
>shilling Linux to Ganker >Board full of tech illiterate morons >"What could go wrong" >Surprised when micropenis shills don't understand how to solve the most basic of problems
I installed Pop! OS and genuinely enjoyed using it, but having to use weird scripts workarounds for even the most basic stuff (Vertical Sync, Xbox controllers, mouse settings etc.), made it all just so cumbersome to use. Things that I wanted to do "just werks" on Windows, but having to jump through hoops just to get the most basic stuff to work on Linux, made me switch back.
I genuinely want to use Linux, and have tried multiple times, but not having shit work without configuring my life away is annoying as frick.

>Vertical Sync
I had to write a bash script to enable/disable VSync as I was getting heavy screen tearing in any game. I ran a RX 5700 XT at the time.
>Xbox controllers.
Not if your using the wireless Xbone like I do. Nothing happens if you just plug it in. You had to get the github drivers.
>Mouse settings.
I run a Logitech mouse, and I wished to change mouse settings. Custom programs exist, but barely worked.
I can easily setup anything I wanna do, it's just a pain in the ass when you have go through hoops for the most basic stuff, when you can pretty much always plug-in-play stuff on Windows.
>I run a Logitech mouse, and I wished to change mouse settings.

I already told you how to fix the xbox issue. You weren't specific enough with the vsync stuff to get someone to help you
Xbox controllers is on microsoft, for all theri microsoft heart linux campaign they don't actually seem to contribute anything that'd actually be helpful for linux users. Even sony has upstream support for their controllers and they work ootb on linux, switch pro controllers also have upstream support (though no from nintendo afaik) and my 8bitdo controller works without any fiddling in both xbox and switch mode. No idea what issues you were havig with vsync, that should enabled by default pretty much everywhere. And mouse settings makes me think you were using gnome and gnome devs are autistic about a lot of things, plasma for example doesn't have that issue.
It's actually pretty hilarious that a lot of old Windows games (early 2000s and 90s) actually work better on Linux through Wine than they do on modern versions of Windows.
What is worse for gaming? Linux or Mac? I mean M2 looks fricking great but if I can't play shit it's useless and for Linux I don't even know if I could launch my games properly :/
>needlessly complex and time consuming
That’s very funny because on Windows, i had to go through multiple different settings panels to find where to tweak a setting because’s there’s different settings pages for different people that are from different times
Well, for starters, better security. Most modified versions of windows turn off windows defender and CPU mitigations that protect you from things such as Spectre. Linux doesn't have this problem.
I genuinely don't understand how so many people frick up linux. It's a piece of cake, just use ubuntu, it's literally easy enough for a small child to figure out. Never had any issues, and I know that gets said a lot, but I'm not joking. Zero issues.
These people aren't just normal tech illiterate.
These people are Windows baby ducks. If somethings doesn't work in the same obtuse way as it does on Windows, they don't know how to help themselves.
They don't want to understand how their system works, that's the inherent problem. And I'd disagree that using linux - that is, properly using it - is easy. It's a very complex system and you want to learn it if you are going to use it for a long time.
>goy don't install linux >goy look it deleted itself when i told it to >goy have you heard of atlas os?

>install mod organizer 2 for new vegas >it just werks in lutris >can casefold the prefix too
I've seen people crying that modding bethesda games is impossible on linux, or that you need to use steamtinkerlaunch, for years.
Enabling support for case insensitivity (i.e. Black person=Black person) on your filesystem and setting folders to be case insensitive. >how does it work
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/558977/how-to-enable-new-in-kernel-5-2-case-insensitivity-for-ext4-on-a-given-directory
Wouldn't it be more secure if your system required case sensitivity across the board? Windows doesn't require this which makes it that much easier to frick over.
You're only toggling support for case insensitivity on the filesystem. You still need to manually enable it for specific folders, although it does apply recursively so don't do it on /
just because the filesystem supports case insensitivity doesn't mean everything will be case insensitive, you can make specific folders case insensitive instead, proton actually does that for its prefixes. NTFS itself actually supports case sensitivity, but because windows itself doesn't enable it a lot of windows software is made not accounting for it.
>proton actually does that for its prefixes
Pretty sure that's only on steam deck. Your filesystem needs to support the casefold feature to do that and it's disabled by default. Wine can sort of handle case insensitivity by inefficiently scanning game directories when e.g. loading file, but it doesn't work for bethesda games because modders routinely ship their files in inconsistently cased folders. I've seen DATA, meshes and Textures all from the same file, and nvse vs NVSE will straight up break your game.
Anonymous
Actually, ironically, the Steam Deck doens't flip the casefold bit. In fact, my Steam Deck came out of the box without the casefolding feature even enabled on the ext4 filesystem.
Anonymous
I thought the deck used casefold for sd cards?
I enabled case folding on my existing ext4 partition and can tell you that proton makes case insensitive prefixes, no Steam Deck involved
Doesn't werk on my machine, although it runs fine if you create the appid prefix first and manually casefold it. Maybe steam only does it if you're installing a game for the first time so it can guarantee that it can casefold both the prefix and install directory.

Probably only does it with new prefixes

That is exactly the case (heh) here. Casefold isn't enabled recursively like that other anon stated earlier; casefold can only be enabled on an empty folder.

>Casefold isn't enabled recursively like that other anon stated earlier
No, casefold support on your filesystem isn't recursive. But if you enabled casefold on a folder, on a filesystem that supports it, then it will be recursively applied to the file structure of anything later installed to that folder. And I think it will also be applied recursively if you apply it to an empty folder and then drag and drop files into it.

I enabled case folding on my existing ext4 partition and can tell you that proton makes case insensitive prefixes, no steam deck involved

You can apply the casefold feature to an existing ext4 partition but the filesystem has to be offline.
>Plus what's wrong with steamtinkerlaunch?
It's really awkward to use if you need to start an game from another executable you launch with stl, like mod organizer and bethesda games. It's good for some tools like hedgemodmanager though.
When I refer to something I like, I'm going to truncate it's name whether you like it or not. It's like how someone will say "EDF" instead of "Earth Defense Force", or how people say "Arch" to refer to the distro instead of "Arch Linux".
"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU Coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux."
The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows were compiled with GCC, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even if you were correct, you won't be for long."
With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.
What the hell is with all of the linux hate? Are you all picking a shitty distro or something? How the frick can you get nothing working? I can play every single game and mod I played on Windows 10
street shitting jeets who sold their soul to microsoft. that or morons who uninstalled their DE much like linus did in his linux challenge video. for vidya i forget im even on linux, some modloaders are finnicky but otherwise everything just works
People fear for getting left behind.
They are so accustomed to windows, they can't possibly imagine running something different. As more people leave windows they feel more and more left behind. They want YOU to suffer through Windows' and Microsoft's bullshit too
this one's always funny to me when a friend on windows complains he gets microstutters or found out he can get extra frames using dxvk. or like when elden ring first released, some of my friends complained about performance but i had 0 issues on linux
I would bet half of the FUD is people bullshiting their friends so they don't have to play shit games >Anon do you want to play Borderlands 2 with us? >Oh man I sure would guys, but I use Linux and it won't work
Works every time
Windows users in 2023 are just consolegays with delusions of grandeur. They'll never understand how freedom of OS is yet another strength of PC gaming.
Ganker in general just rages at "complex" things related to technology because it's the most tech illiterate board despite being dedicated to video games. Watch how anons seethe at things such as PC gaming, piracy, and Linux. While these things aren't really that complex, gays think they are, so they seethe at them. It's just sour grapes.
>What the hell is with all of the linux hate?
Too many dumb consolegays moved to Windows + PC. Think of white flight from an increasingly blacked neighborhood, everybody with a lick of sense moved to gnu/linux.
It's funny when you make a Linux thread on Ganker the first 100 posts are always full of wintoddlers seething but later they get tired and you can have a pretty cool thread with some bros
Distant Worlds Universe, making it run at all required half-dozen winetrick packages, and then it crashed with OOM exception when starting tutorial.
Which may be fixed by limiting GPU memory available to Wine now that I think of it, so maybe I'll give it another try someday.
>decide to try using Mint >not too bad but missing a lot of visibility features something even W8.1 has >files I had deleted via Mint and thought had disappeared ending up being found without any tinkering using W8, like trash files from lost photos and exif data from art >Appimageupdater doesn't work half the time despite it updating. Something like leebrawulf doesn't even update through and niether does L BRY >expected to suck it up and get a PHD in computers just to do basic hobbyist shit
I don't like winblows or itoddler shit but I wouldn't mind if this Linux was more accomodating for folk who are making an effort to make the move more optionable, instead of feeling like you're cutting off several organs or limbs in your own system.
>its not a plug and play os
That's not my experience, everything is plug and play over here, but then again I don't pirate and run everything through Steam/Proton-GE.
No more time than you had to invest back in the XP era honestly
Certainly less effort than the beginning of hardware accelerated graphics where nothing fricking worked reliably
if a game is shipped and sold as a complete package the last thing I want to be doing is spending my time learning how to compile it instead of actually spending that time PLAYING the game.
>nothing works in Windows! I have all these dialog boxes and widgets and things that I can't make go away! >do X! >I shouldn't have to do that! Linux just werks!
Then the other side: >Linux requires me to choose X or Wayland and deal with the backwards configuration processes of each, I need to install layers upon layers of compatibility shit so I can play Steam games, and even then it's not necessarily going to work right >FRICK YOU moron GO BACK TO WINDOWS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FOLLOW A 50 PAGE GUIDE ON HOW TO GET JILL OF THE JUNGLE TO RUN AT 3FPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
its on GoG too you fricking dumbass. and the point still stands; you want people to migrate over from fricking Windows and Mac, configure you Linux systems more professionally so that it doesn't fricking break the whole god damm time.
Jill of the Jungle was originally a DOS game, anon, and you can even get the whole trilogy on GoG itself. Hence, it doesn't belong to Epic. but its a pretty epic game on its own ofc. too
You quoted the wrong post, but you two are on totally parallel lines when it comes to discussing a topic, he's got an entirely different point he's arguing on.
didn't quote the wrong post, my point is that it has a linux version, there's no 50 pages guide to read in order to run it
You quoted the wrong post, but you two are on totally parallel lines when it comes to discussing a topic, he's got an entirely different point he's arguing on.
Man, Imagine if PS5 had OtherOS today, with all the advancements to proton.
It'd be fricking revolutionary, and actually get me interested in console gaming again, knowing that I get a free gaming PC with it and all I have to do is just go out of my way to dual boot into OtherOS. Dedicated gaming PCs would just simply have less value if you could go get a $500 console and load linux up on it in the current year.
>what makes you think it would perform any better than the Steam Deck without FSR?
That's the thing: I don't. The point of this is not to get a top of the line PC out of it, otherwise I may as well just stick to the native original OS partition of this hypothetical scenario and not even bother with a linux sideload.
That being said, steam deck isn't really a bad place to be in terms of console performance as it's roughly PS4 quality, I have one and it has been running the games I throw at it enough for me to consider it "console quality gaming but without the bullshit" and I don't regret getting one.
The point of a console being able to dual boot linux to me is to have an *entry level* PC to come with a standard current gen console experience as we know it. While it wouldn't be able to run all the latest and greatest, PC has a very large backlog, emulators not even withstanding in this argument, and having access to that multi-generational history with your standard ass console would make consoles several times more valuable even if the linux OS you run on it wouldn't be able to run current gen games, since it'd still have access to older games and indie games.
If nothing else you'd get a functional web browser on your console that doesn't suck ass.

Like, why though? You already have a gaming PC, don't you?
Anonymous
It's a solution for poorgays to get a cheap gaming pre-built pc and a console at the same time, especially since you can add extra NVMe storage and could probably dual boot in this way.
Anonymous
Because, I have different rooms. I don't want to lug my entire desktop PC around, this is part of the reason I got a steam deck to begin with.
You're missing the forest for the trees of what I'm saying however. While I have a gaming PC already, there are many who do not. To be able to just access a whole new world of gaming by being able to dual boot is something that is really valuable. What you're asking is essentially "Why custom firmware your PSP and unlock a bunch of new features the normal version doesn't have? It can already play music, videos, and games, why would you want it to do more?"
Anonymous
CFW is an entirely different scenario. If you have a gaming PC AND a Steam Deck, there's no fricking reason to install a half-baked shitty version of Linux on a console.
Anonymous
Right, which is why if you're a poorgay and can only afford a console, being able to turn it into a gaming PC is a nice thing to have.

No offense anon but I think you're a bit slow because you continue to make this about (Me) specifically and not the overall value add of a linux desktop, specifically in the context of how advanced proton and WINE are these days.
This isn't about me. I'm putting myself in the shoes of tiny me that remembers the whole new world that opened up to me when I started modding my Sega Dreamcast as a kid. Why settle for just dreamcast games when I could also play games from other platforms on it? Do I really have to reiterate how much value something like that adds to hardware? Why is that not self evident to you?
ps3 had a weirdass architecture so I doubt you'd be able to play anything other than sourceports. ps4 on the otherhand has no otheros but can be hacked to install linux, you can play halo on it if you really want
>i installed in whenever tech shrek made a shill video for popOS >dual booted and never used it, just used windows10 >tried to update popOS couple of days ago >struggled to even update >had to update, then update to get a newer update >finally finished updating >"hmmm 'refresh' ayyy?" >refresh and leave it over night >it didn't do it, and is completely fricked >luckily i can still mash F2 to change my default boot back to windows (popOS changed it from windows to its broken bullshit when i updated)
maybe i'll get linux mint if windows gets too shit
the others look like too much work, and i wanted my 'power button'+D to go to destktop back
never liked the tablet/mac look and layout of popOS >i could just format my SSD that i used toput popOS on and get a whole 200GB SSD back, instead of it being unused for a shitty OS
i hope steamOS gets really good in the future, i should probably use that, but im too used to windows layout
its fiddly on the steam deck too, when in desktop mode
probably fine on a desktop/laptop
Only distrohop if you feel your current distro is insufficient or is not meeting your needs and you can assign an actual cause for why.
For example, if you're constantly attempting to compile deb-src packages on debian and pinning versions, switching to arch makes sense.
If you need control over compilation options with AUR and find yourself tampering with pkgbuilds constantly, switching from arch to gentoo makes sense.
Carefully evaluate whether you actually are finding drawbacks that are solved by switching, because most of the time they aren't.
Also, when transferring to a new drive, just boot a liveCD and dd your whole disk over. There's no reason to do a fresh install. Linux doesn't actually care what disk it's on unlike windows.
other than being factually incorrect about the second amendment there isn't really anything wrong with this

It's hard to think about something else when the pride flag lives on your task bar rent free.
Yeah I dropped it. Went back to Windows 10 LTSC. Games will all be pozzed garbage by 2032. No need to worry about switching OS
Pranked!
stay mad, stay on bindows lmao
Unless your hobby is tinkering with computers you'll have an awful time with Linux. It's a really shit OS for daily use but they will insist it's completely fine
moron here. Started Linux with Kubuntu like two years ago. It's been fine. Literally google your the error that your flavor of terminal spits out and there's a stackoverflow fix for it. You just have to be incapable of problem solving or have a crippling fear of using terminal commands to think that Mint or Ubuntu is unusable and unlearnable.
this whole reddit drama makes troubleshooting a nightmare
we don't want everyone to use linux because most people are tech illiterate and they bring the quality down
Go dilate or troubleshoot your dilator in case the drivers dont work with your distrans.
just check a cache of archive of the site bro
>not using kdeconnect
Kdeconnect is just bluetooth phone shit isn't? Since when could you use it for media drive sharing between host and other (non-mobile) users?
pretty sure kdeconnect doesn't have a bluetooth backend, it's LAN and you've been able to connect it with other computers since the start pretty sure.
Oh neat. Might have to check it out then. Always just disabled it on a fresh install cause thought it was BT shit. Thanks anon.
>or scrcpy
I wish you were right, I just spent two days nolifing OSU instead of doing something productive because it just worked.

21.2 when?
last time i updated everything my update manager told me to update my computer wouldnt boot into my system anymore, id get a blackscreen on boot and had to boot into a previous kernel or something (i forget what its actually called) and i still dont know why any of this happened nor do i know how to prevent it
are you on nvidia? could be that nvdiia driver hadn't yet been updated to the new kernel version if so
what's the output of "inxi -G"
Ir just werks
i just spent 30 minutes figuring out how to mount an SMB share on this piece of shit
shut the frick up this shit sucks
did you use Samba?
Open file manager, type:
smb://server/share
Boom you can access a windows share.
That's a great tuck job fellow linuxsister!
When you have to show anime pussy to sell an OS you know you're scraping the bottom

you’re damned to an eternity of gender reassignments and posting your desktop while calling people who use an OS that actually works moronic
What are you trying to play? With Proton and Lutris I've had no issues. Multiplayer games with easy anticheat generally don't work though.
blue reflection

Looks like you need proton GE for it to work. I recently installed this. Took 5 minutes.

no thanks
You don't need steam for Proton :3
if that's true it's cool

Not OP, I just tried to open a web browser. 3 hours later I gave up. Never have a seen a worse OS, it's just not possible, opening a preinstalled web browser should never crash an OS
>opening a preinstalled web browser should never crash an OS
Edge? Not even once.
Chromium on whatever Linux build I tried, wouldn't even launch. I think I eventually got some version of Firefox to *kinda* run
I like how vague all these people are because they are just making shit up.
i'm never coming back to linux, you techhomosexuals backstabbed me.
>With Proton and Lutris I've had no issues.
you shouldn't believe this.
Severe skill iss(you), millions of deck owners (literal consolegays) are smarter than you.
>attempt to download game directly on my computer

hahaha, you're a funny guy

lol thanks for a laugh idiot

if you are really that much of a homosexual, just download a version without windows defender. i prefer having it because i download lots of pirated games.
Ok, now force a progam to run as windowed on linux. i will watch you try
this is the fabled intellect of the average linuxgay I hear so much about
you can permanently disable smartscreen without disabling defender you fricking idiot
You can permanently disable defender too if you know what you're doing, but Linux is still a better OS.
>You can permanently disable defender too if you know what you're doing
Yeah you can but most people choose not to for a good reason.
Loonix is amazing as long as you don't use and don't need current year features. Ray tracing in non-native games, so basically everything except Doom Eternal? Nah. DLSS? Nah. HDR? Nah.
>inb4 who uses them
I do.
I've never had problems with ray tracing on Linux. Same with DLSS or HDR.
>I've never had problems with ray tracing on Linux.
what OS are you using?
Manjaro.
But don't ever fricking use the "why do I need to learn" card.
i downloaded linux mint, none of my games worked. the linuxgays did not help me, instead they mocked me.
I'm sticking to my modded version of windows.
>i downloaded linux mint, none of my games worked. the linuxgays did not help me, instead they mocked me.
kek noob
I haven't seen a single linux thread on Ganker where people weren't offered help, this one included as someone tried to debug op's problem
i'd rather not have to depend on random people to use my computer.
tell me 3 things linux can do that modded windows can't.
>tell me 3 things linux can do that modded windows can't.
Not getting spied on
Okay, and?
You know, I was honestly thinking about switching to Mint and went to Ganker to ask if there were any cool Linux unique programs. You know, I thought that they'd have something that wasn't on Windows.
They just acted like I was trying to imply something negative about Linux, and I quickly realized Linxugays are just crabs in a bucket and don't actually even try to make the OS better. They just talk about how M$ is worse.
There is a whole world of programs easily available for you if you run Linux that aren't even available or hard to install on a windows machine.
I won't shill any of those to some tech illiterate zoomer though
It'd be nice to know what those were.
I'm dead serious, and the problem is entirely Linuxgays than Linux itself.
>I thought about using Mint once so I understand infrastructural problems with the kernel pipeline
I'm gonna still assume you're baiting because it's the nicer assumption.
If Linux actually had practical advantages over Windows, then Linuxgays would talk about that. They wouldn't respond to "any good Linux programs" with "ARE YOU IMPLYING THAT LINUX DOESN'T HAVE SUCH THINGS?"
>If Linux actually had practical advantages over Windows, then Linuxgays would talk about that. They wouldn't respond to "any good Linux programs" with "ARE YOU IMPLYING THAT LINUX DOESN'T HAVE SUCH THINGS?"
Okay I will tell you. But keep it secret.
It's Tux Kart
Linuxgays are here to laugh at you and act smug, marketing their distro is just a byproduct of those two desired outcomes. If you unironically take tech advice from Ganker (/g/ooberville especially) then you should stick to windows or mac for your own safety.
I don't have to deal with microsofts bullshit, instead I deal with opensource bullshit.
I prefer the latter much more.
Look i hate Troonix gays who oversell their shit as much as the next guy but sometimes you cant help the mentally moronic and you seem to be one of those
10/10 bait or based moron
You have DE and WM dedicated to different paradigms to what windows provides, but whether that'll appeal to you is something nobody can know. Gamescope is linux only, however, and pretty useful for a lot of games, and I don't think there's anything quite like it on windows.
>tell me 3 things linux can do that modded windows can't.
run Valgrind natively
offer easy piping
allowing access to any hardware from filesystem
Swallow your pride you dick munching homosexual.
I am someone who uses windows and guess what, asking for help is a part of the process in some of its frickups
>Swallow your pride
What pride, i just like doing things on my own. what are you? a leftie commie?
what part of modded you did not understand.
i don't know what any of these do, aside from the last one. i play games and post on Ganker, i do not need any of this crap. it's not for me.
>how to force a progam to run on windowed mode
>search on the forum

>ask
>lmao idk
no, thanks. linux is shit for anything aside from dilating.
>program
>windowed
I'm guessing you mean games because what program doesn't run windowed? and you can use gamescope, or also wine's virtual desktop toggle
Diablo 2, didn't work. frick linux.
disabled telemetry, i don't think i'm the one who tech illiterate here, Akhshay.
>disabled telemetry, i don't think i'm the one who tech illiterate here, Akhshay.
HEY, BILL GATES
>yea what
I JUST DISABLED THE TELEMETRY
>lol okay
You get windows mods from nexusmod or steam workshop?
directly from your mother vegana
>diablo 2 didn't work
is this a falseflag to make windowsgays look moronic?
Diablo 2 (classic, not the troonmake) doesn't have windowed mode. and you can't just go in properties and type -w, and i couldn't find any explanation of how to force progams into windowed. i had to downgrade to version 12.0 and install a resolution mod just so i could play the game at a decent resolution. in this case fullscreen vanilla gets stretched.
>and i couldn't find any explanation of how to force progams into windowed
>and you can use gamescope, or also wine's virtual desktop toggle
i tried both of these solutions, none of them worked lmao
>>how to force a progam to run on windowed mode

>>lmao idk
contradicting yourself, bud
they did not so it does not count
you said you couldn't find the solution, and you asked and got no answer, but you magically tested the program you couldn't find? at least make a believable lie, learn from todd
why would i lie about an operating system i didn't like?
>why would Ganker b***h about a game they didn't play
I don't know but it happens all the time nonetheless
i installed linux on my laptop and oh god, big regret.
why wouldn't know about diablo 2 not working on linux if i had not experience the shit show gays call linux.
i would not*
>download diablo 2 complete edition (not resurrected)
>extract
>mount iso
>install
>enable wine desktop
>it works windowed
what now
there is no penguin level
You fell for the bait
what now is that i'm never coming back to linux. have fun btw
Now he'll move the goalpost to another game, hoping that nobody will bother to disprove his empty claim.
>Linuxgays can't even play diablo 4 and have to cope with an ancient version
lmao
whatever helps you sleep at night, bro
>playing the nubliz slop
whatever helps you pass time while Tyron is busy with your mom
>old good
>new bad
its the same game
If it's the same game, then why play it?
>he still has a blizzard account in 2023
sorry brother not everyone participated in taiwan protest
I legit cannot remember the email I used for mine lol
But I CAN play Diablo 4 on linux.
>no proof
Are you pretending to be blind on top of pretending to be moronic?
anon, look at the video in
hell, look at this video. https://youtu.be/9Y1Ziu_kweA
>what part of modded you did not understand.
You are tech illiterate. There is nothing for me to gain from "understanding" your ramblings.
>what are you? A leftie commie?
Yep i took the bait alright. The layer of irony is hard to tell nowadays
go back Mazda you are drunk again
>i'd rather not have to depend on random people to use my computer.
pffffff, what's the point of asking for help in a first place, are you moronic
>the linuxgays did not help me
>i'd rather not have to depend on random people to use my computer.
make up your mind, and you either take time to learn a new system, or you ask for help. Just like you did when you first started using windows, and just like your parents do every time they don't know how to do something.
>modded version of windows.
Enjoy your doubly backdoored windows
stuff works it just isnt very fun to get it working
you will NOT
-use the vast majority of programs you need on a daily basis. some of them have 20 year old open source alternatives, no need for bloated ableton live or photoshop
-play most of the games you love. if its not on linux, its probably chinkware spyware bloat garbage anyway
-have sex. we need you in the fields arguing over linux distros soldier
-have an enjoyable user experience. only a moronic normie would expect an operating system to be intuitive
-use the drivers for any equipment or peripherals you need. imagine needing proprietary code just for hardware to work its better if it doesnt work at all
-challenge trans identity. most of us are trans and trans women are women and that is final.
sex is bloat anyway
skill issue, stay on moronows, you need to be white to use linux
this is how the average linux user looks like
That’s just the dude who invented Linux. If you want to see what the average user looks like, look at the new female member of his team
he looks better with a beard
even he thinks linux userspace is a fricking nightmare
that should tell you a lot about the shit OS you're shilling
Linux is the kernel
no fricking shit moron
everyone means gnu/linux when they say linux
the fricking distros themselves omit the gnu bit in their names
I’d just like to interject for a moment. What you’re referring to as Linux, is in fact, GNU/Linux, or as I’ve recently taken to calling it, GNU + Linux.
Why not Linux/GNU
Linus gets angry about literally everything.
ughh bros, should we tell her?
He failed to use PopOS
That's not a linux user, it's a israeli moron being paid to pretend he is techy
what makes a Gankertard to install a system everyone knows is terrible for gaming
inevitable death of windows 10
also daily shilling
didn't want to pay for windows when I built my first PC
valve released a linux version of steam shortly after so I never had a reason to switch back
>he doesn't know how to activate windows using the cmd bar
before microsoft cucked their own activation system in windows 10 you had to download a cracked iso from the ruskies and I wasn't dealing with that shit
No one cares about your empty bank account or the last hentai you watched
meds. anon was telling me the reason he installed l*nux instead of windows
my bank account isn't empty anymore and I'm sure a lot of people here share my taste in hentai
Fricking prostitutes, if they aren't ready to be mothers then don't frick.
You didn't need to. XP has VL edition that activated with a single key just fine, Vista and 7 can be activated either with SLIC table injection in BIOS or by using KMS on Professional editions. 8/8.1 only left KMS, I think.
can you go back in time and tell me that 13 years ago
it comes pre-installed on prebuilt PCs, and average v-gay is too dumb to install an OS
Windows 11 is fricking awful and if a 12 ever happens it will be even worse. I'm in the noah's ark stage where I'm rounding up all the games I can and migrating over.
Nothing works because you're a fricking moron.
how do I make it work then
Install gentoo you cretin
>install gentoo you cretin
at least the penguin is cute
Some games work but you’re going to have to dual boot for most of the multiplayer games you play which begs the question why even have it in the first place
>you’re going to have to dual boot for most of the multiplayer games you play
but what if you don't play fortnight?
That's not what begs the question means
You need arch to get all the bleeding edge technology for your gaming needs, it's fairly lightweight and the install is pretty straighforward. You could get it running games in just 30 minutes, including the time it takes to download the .iso
It doesn't work. frick linux. frick Ganker.
Play some Tux Racer, bro.
I did

Any more native linux free games?
I got 3 installed, Frogatto, Seahorse Adventures and Alex the Allegator 4
Dwarf Fortress classic
>pedofrick uses linux
big surprise
Haha, I tried installing it to a separate HDD to try it out with zero consequences. This shit fricked it's way into my BIOS and made permanent additions, which I now need to disable everytime I change shit in my BIOS
Factorio runs fine for me.
>Install Half Life

Whats the point of a native game when they never fricking work right
Use gamescope
Why should I have to, why doesn't it use the primary monitor
Why should I download something when Windows has it natively in settings
Windows doesn't have gamescope
What's so great about gamescope? All you need to simulate the 'eck on your pc is to add a launch argument
More like gamecope

Ohononono Linuxsissies
I told you all.
If you wanna play videogames, stick to windows.
Linux is a workstation. If you don't need it, don't install it, unless you're just messing around.
I want to use linux so I'll play games on it
I acknowledge it as "messing around". It's okay but don't be surprised if some games won't work. And don't bother because i know the replies by now. We get it, everything you wanted to play worked so far.
>It's okay but don't be surprised if some games won't work.
I'm not surprised I know what I signed up for
what if i want to use it for the sake or using something different
No, I don't think I will. What you gonna do now, poojeet?
OP plays multiplayer games and is fricking moronic to think any games outside of CS:GO was going to work with anti cheat being compatible with Linux lol.
Until companies can write a separate anti cheat software that works with Linux, penguins bros are stuck with single player games only
>OP plays multiplayer games
I don't
then what exactly didn't work?
yeah
I'm gonna tell you and then you gonna disregard that

yeah... sure.
I'm not the guy with the problem, Anon.
I have dual-boot with Fedora.
Based, disregard my post. You'd be even more based if you stopped dual-booting.
so any reason why you didn't answer
Because I'm reinstalling windows and I can't do that anymore
so the point of this thread is what exactly
>"wow linux sucks! no I don't have it installed!"
considering the dishonesty of the average poster here, I can't even trust he installed "linux"

lol works on linux but at 20 fps (in my exp)
Did you run it without DXVK? Because it should be at worst a few % difference with it.
probably because i dont know what that is
dx9-11 to Vulcan translation layer with performance focus, vkd3d is similar but for dx12.
Proton has it bundled and enabled by default, but if you run LoL through a separate Wine build you probably have to add it manually.

Dude if only. I'd love to go back. Though I do enjoy linux a lot too.
Last game I've played on Linux was Xenonauts
I've also been playing Pokemon Art Academy with Citra, it's got really cute art. I wanted to play the Disney one too, but the screen glitches out making drawing impossible.
If more people just used Bottles, less people would complain. It just werks
Flatpacks are gay.
I tried bottles but it didn't work, I just use lutris now.
Thanks, I'm playing froggato now, I'll look up the others.
I installed linux last wednesday on an impulse and so far, everything works much better than expected. Only some of the games I tried in steam didn't work out of the box, but I don't mind.
It only works for based older ThinkPads

Because they're lying.
They're insecure that they're too lazy to move from their bloated duct tape propaganda OS so they try to relieve that anxiety by projecting their fears here.

Your faces when Linuxdumbs?
According to Steam hardware statistics Linux only accounts for about 1.47% of the entire population of Steam.
I'm thinking Steam marketers are gaslighting here and reddit into thinking Steam Deck is so popular its moving the Linux adoption needle
It's not Valve, it's Ganker. They think that if everyone switches to Linux then Linux will magically get better, when in reality Linux sucks because of tragedy of the commons - if it is nobody's job to fix something, then it will never get fixed.
It already did magically get better when dxvk was made

it's hilarious how you have to exaggerate to make windows seem hard to use like anyone is going to fall for it when everyone is already using windows and knows how wrong you are
there's a reason why windows dominates the market while linux needs permanent begging and still no one uses it
same but sed s/linux/windows

>can't launch my modded New Vegas install w/ the latest script extensions
Install vcrun 2015, 2019 and dotnet 48 via winetricks. Set up casefolding on your drive and casefold your prefix, whereever you installed the game and your MO2 appdata folder.
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/558977/how-to-enable-new-in-kernel-5-2-case-insensitivity-for-ext4-on-a-given-directory

>whats that? wayland? pipewire? btrfs? oh no i dont use that new troony shit
I like wayland only because it support everything I need with 0 configuration. Hidpi, gpu selection, gpu hotplug (thunderbold).
Pipewire is just the pulseaudio allover again, I don't really care which one is the best bit it makes sense since it also handles video stream.

Linux runs natively in vm with 0 performance or compatibility issue.
>shilling Linux to Ganker

It's quite jarring to see how tech illiterate a normal user on Ganker can be.
But not are they naive and stupid, they also DEFEND their stupidity to their death. It's funny every time
to be fair, modern Ganker is not much better
Ganker still has a lot of very skilled people.
But they won't help you with the most basic shit if you ask like a stupid moron.
if someone is using linux and needs help I'll help them, but I don't tell anyone to use linux, that's for them to decide by themselves
>basic problem
>is not actually basic
works on my machine, debloated windows, i mean.
Just work
>Xbox controllers
Just works if you use Steam
>mouse settings etc.
Do you mean your Logitech, Razer Malware? Because WHY WOULD YOU WANT THAT.
Also it just works.
I can easily setup anything I wanna do, it's just a pain in the ass when you have go through hoops for the most basic stuff, when you can pretty much always plug-in-play stuff on Windows.
if your device is here, you could have used piper https://github.com/libratbag/libratbag/tree/master/data/devices
>I run a Logitech mouse, and I wished to change mouse settings.
Kek like I said. You want to get the Logitech malware running like you do on Windows like an ABSOLUTE moron
Switch back to winblows please. i don't want people like you shitting on the forums or god forbid the bug trackers
>Completely skipped the first two points and went straight to the mouse issue
>Proving they have no argument to the fact that Linux doesn't work straight out of the box.
Not getting something to work on Linux is literally ALWAYS a skill issue. I'm not here to be your basic ass shit tech support for free. I am here to laugh at your stupid "problems".
Never said I couldn't get stuff to work on Linux. It's a pain in the ass having to do anything out of the ordinary just to get it to work on Linux, when it usually >just werks on Windows.
>Never said I couldn't get stuff to work on Linux. It
>But I can't get over the mountain that is the Logitech G Hub Malware 🙁
Your first mistake was buying this garbage. Your second mistake was thinking that you need this malware in your life.
>Going right back to the mouse issue, skipping all the other arguments.
gottem
I already told you how to fix the xbox issue. You weren't specific enough with the vsync stuff to get someone to help you
>I had to write a bash script to enable/disable VSync
Or you could have set
>d3d9.presentInterval = 0
>dxgi.syncInterval = 0
in dxvk.conf.
And mouse settings makes me think you were using gnome and gnome devs are autistic about a lot of things, plasma for example doesn't have that issue.
>he fell for it
my job is done
>Linux
>it works... except
>Windows
>it runs all games... except
aloha solitaire bros...how could microsoft betray us like this...
It's actually pretty hilarious that a lot of old Windows games (early 2000s and 90s) actually work better on Linux through Wine than they do on modern versions of Windows.
>try one game on the list
>works out of the box without any tweaks required
Lintards sure love to spread FUD.
I don't even know who made the list, but it doesn't seem like the game works the way it was intended
3D sound is indeed broken, but it was off by default so I didn't know.
Does it work on PenguinOS?
I don't know yet, I haven't tried
What is worse for gaming? Linux or Mac? I mean M2 looks fricking great but if I can't play shit it's useless and for Linux I don't even know if I could launch my games properly :/
From what I've heard mac completely lacks 32-bit support, which means 32-bit games are only playable in emulator.
in a perfect world everything actually works on linux and everyone here uses linux
>everyone here uses linux
That would be awful
Works on my machine
Stop projecting windows shit.
> needlessly complex and time consuming
lmao, that's just the reflection of your two-digit IQ and nothing more.
>needlessly complex and time consuming
That’s very funny because on Windows, i had to go through multiple different settings panels to find where to tweak a setting because’s there’s different settings pages for different people that are from different times
>ah yes sweety, i can finally play my games at 40 fps without penisoft spying on me. Freedom.
Non-whites will never understand the value of freedom
Stay on windows with the rest of the dalits
tell me the difference of freedom beteween linux and a modified version of windows. white lord.
>modified version of windows
Here he is again
>has no arguments
therefore i win
Well, for starters, better security. Most modified versions of windows turn off windows defender and CPU mitigations that protect you from things such as Spectre. Linux doesn't have this problem.
>le ebin virueses dude
You only get virueses if you are stupid.
>he doesn't edit his own ISO's for maximum personalization
>You only get virueses if you are stupid.
I know that, which is why I'm recommending that you use linux instead of modified versions of windows.
"Modifying" the iso doesn't turn windows into a not black box, afaik the only version you have the source code for is windows XP because it got leaked
skill issue really, i could disable all the bloat and i can run all games without any issue.
>Too stupid to understand what's being said to him

Windows sucks more with any modifications.

If somethings doesn't work in the same obtuse way as it does on Windows, they don't know how to help themselves.
>ummm but why would i use something that doesn't work like this other thing
They don't want to understand how their system works, that's the inherent problem. And I'd disagree that using linux - that is, properly using it - is easy. It's a very complex system and you want to learn it if you are going to use it for a long time.
>falling for the linux meme
Linux is for midwits.

They're the rare kind of pajeets that can use the toilet. Sikhs are fine, also carrying swords is a requirement of their religion.
Anyway, modded Windows is for brainlets if you don't do it yourself and rely on 3rd party isos.
They should have made a religion in the age of guns
Guns are harder to maintain that a whetstone and some oil. You have any idea how tedious maintaining firearms can be? Especially if you have some dumb fricking Germanistan overengineered bullshit or Israeli crap.

>install mod organizer 2 for new vegas

>can casefold the prefix too
I've seen people crying that modding bethesda games is impossible on linux, or that you need to use steamtinkerlaunch, for years.
>can casefold the prefix too
What does this mean and how does it work?
Enabling support for case insensitivity (i.e. Black person=Black person) on your filesystem and setting folders to be case insensitive.
>how does it work
https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/558977/how-to-enable-new-in-kernel-5-2-case-insensitivity-for-ext4-on-a-given-directory
Wouldn't it be more secure if your system required case sensitivity across the board? Windows doesn't require this which makes it that much easier to frick over.
Case-sensitivity has basically zero security implications, permissions are handled via other mechanisms on all three big OSes.
You're only toggling support for case insensitivity on the filesystem. You still need to manually enable it for specific folders, although it does apply recursively so don't do it on /
You can't flip case-sensitivity unless the directory is empty, anyways.
just because the filesystem supports case insensitivity doesn't mean everything will be case insensitive, you can make specific folders case insensitive instead, proton actually does that for its prefixes.
Actually, ironically, the Steam Deck doens't flip the casefold bit. In fact, my Steam Deck came out of the box without the casefolding feature even enabled on the ext4 filesystem.
I thought the deck used casefold for sd cards?
That wouldn't stick on immutable OS like SteamOS, would it? Plus what's wrong with steamtinkerlaunch?
The root partition is the only immutable one, the user/home partition where your games are isn't immutable.
>Plus what's wrong with steamtinkerlaunch?
It's really awkward to use if you need to start an game from another executable you launch with stl, like mod organizer and bethesda games. It's good for some tools like hedgemodmanager though.
what is stallman doing here

GNU/Hurd*
When I refer to something I like, I'm going to truncate it's name whether you like it or not. It's like how someone will say "EDF" instead of "Earth Defense Force", or how people say "Arch" to refer to the distro instead of "Arch Linux".
what did you do to the poor game
How does Arch compare to something like Mint?
harder to install, packages are more up to date, no apt instead uses pacman

What the hell is with all of the linux hate? Are you all picking a shitty distro or something? How the frick can you get nothing working? I can play every single game and mod I played on Windows 10
street shitting jeets who sold their soul to microsoft. that or morons who uninstalled their DE much like linus did in his linux challenge video. for vidya i forget im even on linux, some modloaders are finnicky but otherwise everything just works
People fear for getting left behind.
They are so accustomed to windows, they can't possibly imagine running something different. As more people leave windows they feel more and more left behind. They want YOU to suffer through Windows' and Microsoft's bullshit too
Also their old Linux memes don't work anymore and Linux users simply laugh about them
DXVK and Proton are so unbelievability good that they are even the best option to use on Windows sometimes.
this one's always funny to me when a friend on windows complains he gets microstutters or found out he can get extra frames using dxvk. or like when elden ring first released, some of my friends complained about performance but i had 0 issues on linux
I would bet half of the FUD is people bullshiting their friends so they don't have to play shit games

Kek exactly
Windows users in 2023 are just consolegays with delusions of grandeur. They'll never understand how freedom of OS is yet another strength of PC gaming.
Ganker in general just rages at "complex" things related to technology because it's the most tech illiterate board despite being dedicated to video games. Watch how anons seethe at things such as PC gaming, piracy, and Linux. While these things aren't really that complex, gays think they are, so they seethe at them. It's just sour grapes.
No Linux is just broken and busted, my mommy always told me how smart and special I was and how good with computers I am after all
>What the hell is with all of the linux hate?
Too many dumb consolegays moved to Windows + PC. Think of white flight from an increasingly blacked neighborhood, everybody with a lick of sense moved to gnu/linux.
It's funny when you make a Linux thread on Ganker the first 100 posts are always full of wintoddlers seething but later they get tired and you can have a pretty cool thread with some bros
have you tried and failed to run any games? which ones? Not counting anticheat or video codec shenanigans
Distant Worlds Universe, making it run at all required half-dozen winetrick packages, and then it crashed with OOM exception when starting tutorial.
Which may be fixed by limiting GPU memory available to Wine now that I think of it, so maybe I'll give it another try someday.

Just try it first on a usb
>t. arch with KOOL DE
think about LGBT flag in your taskbar, do black lives not matter to you?
Do it homosexual.
>decide to try using Mint
>not too bad but missing a lot of visibility features something even W8.1 has
>files I had deleted via Mint and thought had disappeared ending up being found without any tinkering using W8, like trash files from lost photos and exif data from art
>Appimageupdater doesn't work half the time despite it updating. Something like leebrawulf doesn't even update through and niether does L BRY
>expected to suck it up and get a PHD in computers just to do basic hobbyist shit
I don't like winblows or itoddler shit but I wouldn't mind if this Linux was more accomodating for folk who are making an effort to make the move more optionable, instead of feeling like you're cutting off several organs or limbs in your own system.
Okay, but what if I run a musl/clang/bsd utils userland
That's not GNU/Linux.
>he fell for linuxgay shilling
linux is only good for using qubes + whonix or tails, for reasons
works on my machine
good evening Sirs
good morning sirs, have you did the needful and installed linux?
Shut up Rajeesh you're not a real Indian until you play pic related oh wait your pakistani ass can't play games that are haram.
XP gave me so much ptsd that Linux is the last thing I want to use lol.
A windows OS gave you so much trouble you can't use a Linux-based OS at all?
its not a plug and play os moron. games work if you're willing to invest time to research how to make them work.
>its not a plug and play os
That's not my experience, everything is plug and play over here, but then again I don't pirate and run everything through Steam/Proton-GE.
Most is actually plug and play, unless you go with something like Arch. For games just use Steam and Lutris
No more time than you had to invest back in the XP era honestly
Certainly less effort than the beginning of hardware accelerated graphics where nothing fricking worked reliably
if a game is shipped and sold as a complete package the last thing I want to be doing is spending my time learning how to compile it instead of actually spending that time PLAYING the game.
>learning how to compile it
I don't think anyone using gentoo had to compile their Steam games, just install it normally.
>nothing works in Windows! I have all these dialog boxes and widgets and things that I can't make go away!
>do X!
>I shouldn't have to do that! Linux just werks!
Then the other side:
>Linux requires me to choose X or Wayland and deal with the backwards configuration processes of each, I need to install layers upon layers of compatibility shit so I can play Steam games, and even then it's not necessarily going to work right
>FRICK YOU moron GO BACK TO WINDOWS IF YOU DON'T WANT TO FOLLOW A 50 PAGE GUIDE ON HOW TO GET JILL OF THE JUNGLE TO RUN AT 3FPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
>JILL OF THE JUNGLE
>Epic games
Into the trash
its on GoG too you fricking dumbass. and the point still stands; you want people to migrate over from fricking Windows and Mac, configure you Linux systems more professionally so that it doesn't fricking break the whole god damm time.
>it's on GoG too you fricking dumbass
It's an Epic game, you fricking dumbass.
Jill of the Jungle was originally a DOS game, anon, and you can even get the whole trilogy on GoG itself. Hence, it doesn't belong to Epic.
but its a pretty epic game on its own ofc. too
What part of
>Epic
>into the trash
did you not understand?
Epic can go frick itself, garbage subsidiary company of Tencent shareholders.
anon...
What's that pigeon?
this goofy fellow
didn't quote the wrong post, my point is that it has a linux version, there's no 50 pages guide to read in order to run it
You quoted the wrong post, but you two are on totally parallel lines when it comes to discussing a topic, he's got an entirely different point he's arguing on.
>belongs to Epic
since when?
Since they made it, I'd guess.
Tim Sweeney must have had a lobotomy since that time period, he's nothing like his old self now, a b***h to deal with.
Use the one with the cartoon devil you mupped.
BSD is shit
>using BSD
So that's why the PS3 had no games. What was Sony thinking?
Man, Imagine if PS5 had OtherOS today, with all the advancements to proton.
It'd be fricking revolutionary, and actually get me interested in console gaming again, knowing that I get a free gaming PC with it and all I have to do is just go out of my way to dual boot into OtherOS. Dedicated gaming PCs would just simply have less value if you could go get a $500 console and load linux up on it in the current year.
>if PS5 had OtherOS today
It's AMD hardware, what makes you think it would perform any better than the Steam Deck without FSR?
>what makes you think it would perform any better than the Steam Deck without FSR?
It's a solution for poorgays to get a cheap gaming pre-built pc and a console at the same time, especially since you can add extra NVMe storage and could probably dual boot in this way.
CFW is an entirely different scenario. If you have a gaming PC AND a Steam Deck, there's no fricking reason to install a half-baked shitty version of Linux on a console.
You won't even be able to play sourceports, PS3 Linux has no hardware graphics acceleration even on OtherOS++ with CFW
Source: I tried it
It's better for Unix's actual purpose as a server. Playing games other than Zork on a system that's basically DOS is dumb.
>i installed in whenever tech shrek made a shill video for popOS
>dual booted and never used it, just used windows10
>tried to update popOS couple of days ago
>struggled to even update
>had to update, then update to get a newer update
>finally finished updating
>"hmmm 'refresh' ayyy?"
>refresh and leave it over night
>it didn't do it, and is completely fricked
>luckily i can still mash F2 to change my default boot back to windows (popOS changed it from windows to its broken bullshit when i updated)
maybe i'll get linux mint if windows gets too shit
the others look like too much work, and i wanted my 'power button'+D to go to destktop back
never liked the tablet/mac look and layout of popOS
>i could just format my SSD that i used toput popOS on and get a whole 200GB SSD back, instead of it being unused for a shitty OS
i hope steamOS gets really good in the future, i should probably use that, but im too used to windows layout
its fiddly on the steam deck too, when in desktop mode
probably fine on a desktop/laptop
been using mint for like 5 months now and im getting a new SSD soon, should I stay on it or try out a new distro?
Stay on it, distro hopping is a trap.
oke
while we're at it, is there any essential stuff to setup/install for both gaming and everyday use?
gamescope for old games that only work at low res, maybe corectrl if you want to overclock your amd card
gamescope
protonup-qt
flatpak + flatseal
bottles or lutris
replaysorcery
Install Gentoo.
Only real difference between distros is packet manager. Rest can be easily changed.
linux bros... linus is off his meds again...
other than being factually incorrect about the second amendment there isn't really anything wrong with this
guy he was replying to is almost certainly a moron
He's still right about not giving them to any moron with a pulse.
Yeah, guns are a perfectly fine hobby, but I'm with him that if you have psychological issues they should be out of your reach.
t. gun nerd who goes to a gun range regularly
Why do GNU/Linux chads make Gankercels seethe so hard.
Well, if I post a screenshot of a game in another thread, you wouldn't even know it was Linux in the first place so
1.) Install SteamOS
2.) Install Steam games
3.) Press "Play" button on the game you want to play
Wow... that was hard.
steamos isn't even out yet and you're moronic if you use that old debian version
All my games work except the ones with eac and battleshit but I've stopped playing those. Aoe2 DE and DRG are far better than rainbowsix troonysiege
