moron here. Started Linux with Kubuntu like two years ago. It's been fine. Literally google your the error that your flavor of terminal spits out and there's a stackoverflow fix for it. You just have to be incapable of problem solving or have a crippling fear of using terminal commands to think that Mint or Ubuntu is unusable and unlearnable.

pretty sure kdeconnect doesn't have a bluetooth backend, it's LAN and you've been able to connect it with other computers since the start pretty sure.

Loonix is amazing as long as you don't use and don't need current year features. Ray tracing in non-native games, so basically everything except Doom Eternal? Nah. DLSS? Nah. HDR? Nah.

Mesa flipped on raytracing by default as of the current release, anon. NVIDIA supported RTX on linux from the beginning. DLSS always worked for NVidia because it's exclusive to their cards.
HDR doesn't work correctly on Windows half the time either because nobody can fricking standardize how it's supposed to work, but you're right that it doesn't work here at the moment.

Anon, all of those work, you could even play ray traced doom on deck if you wanted to murder your battery life. HDR does have caveats as it's an ongoing work, but you can get some stuff working if you roll your sleeves

Anon, you learned to use Windows, you didn't have the knowledge from the womb. Everything has a learning curve, so the whole "why do I need to learn X" doesn't work.
I have no trouble with Linux and Windows, I simply learned. MacOS is dogshit however, literally awful if you're an advanced user.
The only thing I would agree with is that the difficulty can get high depending on the distribution and that can put off users and I can accept that excuse.

They just acted like I was trying to imply something negative about Linux, and I quickly realized Linxugays are just crabs in a bucket and don't actually even try to make the OS better. They just talk about how M$ is worse.

You have DE and WM dedicated to different paradigms to what windows provides, but whether that'll appeal to you is something nobody can know. Gamescope is linux only, however, and pretty useful for a lot of games, and I don't think there's anything quite like it on windows.

Diablo 2 (classic, not the troonmake) doesn't have windowed mode. and you can't just go in properties and type -w, and i couldn't find any explanation of how to force progams into windowed. i had to downgrade to version 12.0 and install a resolution mod just so i could play the game at a decent resolution. in this case fullscreen vanilla gets stretched.

Pipewire is just the pulseaudio allover again, I don't really care which one is the best bit it makes sense since it also handles video stream.

So, hoops I have to go through in a hail-mary, provided I don't copy my 150+ gig /mods folder over to the ext4 partition and only install the utilities. I tried setting up casefolding on my already-existing filesystem but tune2fs couldn't find it despite me pointing directly at it.

          Anonymous

          >I tried setting up casefolding on my already-existing filesystem but tune2fs couldn't find it despite me pointing directly at it.
It has to be unmounted first. If it's not a secondary drive, then reboot into a live iso and do it there. Then you make an empty folder (like .wine_nv for the wine prefix) and turn on case insensitivity for it. You should probably reinstall the game and MO2 into that to be sure it'll work right.

I installed Pop! OS and genuinely enjoyed using it, but having to use weird scripts workarounds for even the most basic stuff (Vertical Sync, Xbox controllers, mouse settings etc.), made it all just so cumbersome to use. Things that I wanted to do "just werks" on Windows, but having to jump through hoops just to get the most basic stuff to work on Linux, made me switch back.

I genuinely want to use Linux, and have tried multiple times, but not having shit work without configuring my life away is annoying as frick.

I run a Logitech mouse, and I wished to change mouse settings. Custom programs exist, but barely worked.

I can easily setup anything I wanna do, it's just a pain in the ass when you have go through hoops for the most basic stuff, when you can pretty much always plug-in-play stuff on Windows.

Xbox controllers is on microsoft, for all theri microsoft heart linux campaign they don't actually seem to contribute anything that'd actually be helpful for linux users. Even sony has upstream support for their controllers and they work ootb on linux, switch pro controllers also have upstream support (though no from nintendo afaik) and my 8bitdo controller works without any fiddling in both xbox and switch mode. No idea what issues you were havig with vsync, that should enabled by default pretty much everywhere. And mouse settings makes me think you were using gnome and gnome devs are autistic about a lot of things, plasma for example doesn't have that issue.

Enabling support for case insensitivity (i.e. Black person=Black person) on your filesystem and setting folders to be case insensitive.
        >how does it work
        https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/558977/how-to-enable-new-in-kernel-5-2-case-insensitivity-for-ext4-on-a-given-directory

          Anonymous

Wouldn't it be more secure if your system required case sensitivity across the board? Windows doesn't require this which makes it that much easier to frick over.

            Anonymous

Case-sensitivity has basically zero security implications, permissions are handled via other mechanisms on all three big OSes.

            Anonymous

You're only toggling support for case insensitivity on the filesystem. You still need to manually enable it for specific folders, although it does apply recursively so don't do it on /

              Anonymous

You can't flip case-sensitivity unless the directory is empty, anyways.

            Anonymous

just because the filesystem supports case insensitivity doesn't mean everything will be case insensitive, you can make specific folders case insensitive instead, proton actually does that for its prefixes. NTFS itself actually supports case sensitivity, but because windows itself doesn't enable it a lot of windows software is made not accounting for it.

              Anonymous

              >proton actually does that for its prefixes
Pretty sure that's only on steam deck. Your filesystem needs to support the casefold feature to do that and it's disabled by default. Wine can sort of handle case insensitivity by inefficiently scanning game directories when e.g. loading file, but it doesn't work for bethesda games because modders routinely ship their files in inconsistently cased folders. I've seen DATA, meshes and Textures all from the same file, and nvse vs NVSE will straight up break your game.

                Anonymous

Actually, ironically, the Steam Deck doens't flip the casefold bit. In fact, my Steam Deck came out of the box without the casefolding feature even enabled on the ext4 filesystem.

                Anonymous

I thought the deck used casefold for sd cards?

I enabled case folding on my existing ext4 partition and can tell you that proton makes case insensitive prefixes, no Steam Deck involved

Doesn't werk on my machine, although it runs fine if you create the appid prefix first and manually casefold it. Maybe steam only does it if you're installing a game for the first time so it can guarantee that it can casefold both the prefix and install directory.

                Anonymous

Probably only does it with new prefixes

                Anonymous

That is exactly the case (heh) here. Casefold isn't enabled recursively like that other anon stated earlier; casefold can only be enabled on an empty folder.

                Anonymous

                >Casefold isn't enabled recursively like that other anon stated earlier
No, casefold support on your filesystem isn't recursive. But if you enabled casefold on a folder, on a filesystem that supports it, then it will be recursively applied to the file structure of anything later installed to that folder. And I think it will also be applied recursively if you apply it to an empty folder and then drag and drop files into it.

You can apply the casefold feature to an existing ext4 partition but the filesystem has to be offline.

That wouldn't stick on immutable OS like SteamOS, would it? Plus what's wrong with steamtinkerlaunch?

The root partition is the only immutable one, the user/home partition where your games are isn't immutable.

It's really awkward to use if you need to start an game from another executable you launch with stl, like mod organizer and bethesda games. It's good for some tools like hedgemodmanager though.

"I use Linux as my operating system," I state proudly to the unkempt, bearded man. He swivels around in his desk chair with a devilish gleam in his eyes, ready to mansplain with extreme precision. "Actually", he says with a grin, "Linux is just the kernel. You use GNU+Linux!' I don't miss a beat and reply with a smirk, "I use Alpine, a distro that doesn't include the GNU Coreutils, or any other GNU code. It's Linux, but it's not GNU+Linux."

The smile quickly drops from the man's face. His body begins convulsing and he foams at the mouth and drops to the floor with a sickly thud. As he writhes around he screams "I-IT WAS COMPILED WITH GCC! THAT MEANS IT'S STILL GNU!" Coolly, I reply "If windows were compiled with GCC, would that make it GNU?" I interrupt his response with "-and work is being made on the kernel to make it more compiler-agnostic. Even if you were correct, you won't be for long."

With a sickly wheeze, the last of the man's life is ejected from his body. He lies on the floor, cold and limp. I've womansplained him to death.

its not a plug and play os moron. games work if you're willing to invest time to research how to make them work.

That's not my experience, everything is plug and play over here, but then again I don't pirate and run everything through Steam/Proton-GE.

Most is actually plug and play, unless you go with something like Arch. For games just use Steam and Lutris

if a game is shipped and sold as a complete package the last thing I want to be doing is spending my time learning how to compile it instead of actually spending that time PLAYING the game.

I don't think anyone using gentoo had to compile their Steam games, just install it normally.

Man, Imagine if PS5 had OtherOS today, with all the advancements to proton.

It'd be fricking revolutionary, and actually get me interested in console gaming again, knowing that I get a free gaming PC with it and all I have to do is just go out of my way to dual boot into OtherOS. Dedicated gaming PCs would just simply have less value if you could go get a $500 console and load linux up on it in the current year.

            Anonymous

            >if PS5 had OtherOS today
It's AMD hardware, what makes you think it would perform any better than the Steam Deck without FSR?

              Anonymous

              >what makes you think it would perform any better than the Steam Deck without FSR?
That's the thing: I don't. The point of this is not to get a top of the line PC out of it, otherwise I may as well just stick to the native original OS partition of this hypothetical scenario and not even bother with a linux sideload.
That being said, steam deck isn't really a bad place to be in terms of console performance as it's roughly PS4 quality, I have one and it has been running the games I throw at it enough for me to consider it "console quality gaming but without the bullshit" and I don't regret getting one.

The point of a console being able to dual boot linux to me is to have an *entry level* PC to come with a standard current gen console experience as we know it. While it wouldn't be able to run all the latest and greatest, PC has a very large backlog, emulators not even withstanding in this argument, and having access to that multi-generational history with your standard ass console would make consoles several times more valuable even if the linux OS you run on it wouldn't be able to run current gen games, since it'd still have access to older games and indie games.

If nothing else you'd get a functional web browser on your console that doesn't suck ass.

                Anonymous

Like, why though? You already have a gaming PC, don't you?

                Anonymous

It's a solution for poorgays to get a cheap gaming pre-built pc and a console at the same time, especially since you can add extra NVMe storage and could probably dual boot in this way.

                Anonymous

Because, I have different rooms. I don't want to lug my entire desktop PC around, this is part of the reason I got a steam deck to begin with.

You're missing the forest for the trees of what I'm saying however. While I have a gaming PC already, there are many who do not. To be able to just access a whole new world of gaming by being able to dual boot is something that is really valuable. What you're asking is essentially "Why custom firmware your PSP and unlock a bunch of new features the normal version doesn't have? It can already play music, videos, and games, why would you want it to do more?"

                Anonymous

CFW is an entirely different scenario. If you have a gaming PC AND a Steam Deck, there's no fricking reason to install a half-baked shitty version of Linux on a console.

                Anonymous

Right, which is why if you're a poorgay and can only afford a console, being able to turn it into a gaming PC is a nice thing to have.

No offense anon but I think you're a bit slow because you continue to make this about (Me) specifically and not the overall value add of a linux desktop, specifically in the context of how advanced proton and WINE are these days.

This isn't about me. I'm putting myself in the shoes of tiny me that remembers the whole new world that opened up to me when I started modding my Sega Dreamcast as a kid. Why settle for just dreamcast games when I could also play games from other platforms on it? Do I really have to reiterate how much value something like that adds to hardware? Why is that not self evident to you?

ps3 had a weirdass architecture so I doubt you'd be able to play anything other than sourceports. ps4 on the otherhand has no otheros but can be hacked to install linux, you can play halo on it if you really want

              Anonymous

You won't even be able to play sourceports, PS3 Linux has no hardware graphics acceleration even on OtherOS++ with CFW

It's better for Unix's actual purpose as a server. Playing games other than Zork on a system that's basically DOS is dumb.

Only distrohop if you feel your current distro is insufficient or is not meeting your needs and you can assign an actual cause for why.
For example, if you're constantly attempting to compile deb-src packages on debian and pinning versions, switching to arch makes sense.
If you need control over compilation options with AUR and find yourself tampering with pkgbuilds constantly, switching from arch to gentoo makes sense.
Carefully evaluate whether you actually are finding drawbacks that are solved by switching, because most of the time they aren't.
Also, when transferring to a new drive, just boot a liveCD and dd your whole disk over. There's no reason to do a fresh install. Linux doesn't actually care what disk it's on unlike windows.
