Dragon Age inquisition also won GotY. Woke games get extra points. In a couple years I guess BG3 will also be just as well lauded as DAI is now, meaning it will be mostly forgotten. Maybe once the honeymoon's over, people realize that the game they're playing is kind of rushed and unfinished and buggy.
This is oversimplifying things. Zelda isn’t woke, Elden Ring isn’t woke, Sekiro isn’t woke, etc. The reality is that its a mix of marketing, sales, metacritic score, and perception by viewers of what the committee thinks they want to see. BG3 was riding high on the hype wave and was selling way above expectations. On top of that, they knew the backlash that would come if they selected TotK despite that game’s metacritic reception and sales being phenomenal.
Awards don't mean anything. Time is the only judge.
BOTW has stood the test of time, but not so much for the game itself, but more for what it represented (potential for the future and so on). When TOTK was released, expectations kind of collapsed. Time is not being kind to TOTK (in fact, it's being very cruel to it) and the curiosity is that BOTW will be taken with it.
Elden Ring is holding up well, I think, but also because of expectations. The DLC will be the factor that determines whether or not the time will be favorable to Elden Ring. I'm not a fan of the game, but I think ER will stand the test of time.
Baldur's Gate 3? I have no idea, I've never played it, and it seems to me to have a "liberal" humor that I particularly can't stand, because I hate homosexualry. So I have nothing to say about this game.
I can more or less agree with this. I HATED BotW, but it had potential in its foundation. Potential that TotK did absolutely nothing with and squandered six years later, which is why everyone wants to forget it exists.

I love that class, but I always am tempted to dual it into fighter. Losing the martial HP/con boost sucks, but getting GM in a weapon AND stealthing while observed is just to tempting to me. Shadow Twin is fricking amazing, but you get almost as much potency w/Vhalor's Helm on a ShadowDancer => Fighter.
Never beaten the series with a pure SD though, I'll consider it.

5e is very simple and excessively limited meaningful player choice and build diversity by "streamlining" class progression. Additionally, WotC felt that DnD would be most broadly marketable by imbuing DnD -- a roleplaying game -- with a system of balance and "fair play" (as well as iterative progression) typically used in video games/MMOs. This strategy is nearly identical to the one used by WotC for 4e, but was better marketed, and so caught on while 4e didn't.
Typically, people who dislike 5e would say that it's a bad edition because:
Multiclassing has nearly been abolished outside of a handful of very game-y couplings that are exlusively intended to do a very specific thing.
Characters (PCs) are extremely safe and the possibility of a character doing something risky and facing death is extremely unlikely.
Classes don't have sufficient diversity within their progression to make different characters of the same class feel significantly different.
Spells have been severely nerfed in comparison to previous additions, and spellcasters frequently have to meticulously pore over spell definitions to see if the kinds of things they want to do are permitted by WotC offical rulings.
Classes that were previously considered shit-tier (monk, barbarian) because of fundamental issues with their primary combat utility still carry those same issues in 5e. In other words, strong classes were nerfed, but bad classes stayed bad.
Excessively high HP among boths players and monsters can make fights a slog. Limited damage exacerbates this issue.
Play has been constructed with the idea that most games never surpas level 5 to level 9 gameplay (referred to by the books as "tier 2" gameplay) and so characters recieve diminishing returns for progressing into the higher levels unless the do really stupid munchkin stuff.
Political stuff in the edition (WotC trying to remove alignment, race/alignment restrictions, popularize exotic races, etc.) rubs people the wrong way.

Characters that work to evoke a desire in the player to romance them instead of being nu-barbie cutouts who offer their genitals to you three in-game hours after meeting them?
How about interactions which develop into close friendships, or strong platonic relationships outside of lolfricking every character in your camp unless you REPEATEDLY choose to shoot down their advances?
But the problem with the

argument is that those things, combat, number crunching, build autism, etc. actually pertain to the core gameplay which *should* separate BG3 from a dating sim. I've mentioned this before, by game development is a zero sum effort. If dev time is spent reviewing "intimacy counselors" and ensuring maximal sexual inclusivity, that's time and money that comes out of dev time pointed towards things like writing a cohesive story or bug-fixing or creating engaging combat scenarios. I assume if Larian hadn't gone full-tilt in making a softcore porn game, they probably would have delivered something much more polarizing to broad audiences due to its mechanical complexity, but generally more memorable and enjoyable to the core cRPG audience.

I just started this game how do you guys choose who to bring with you? I like all the characters, they all bring something to the table
Choose based on who you enjoy talking to more so than anything. BG3 is not super dependent on having every role of a traditional party filled, such as having 1 caster, 1 rogue, etc. All characters level (almost) the same as you, even if they haven’t been out actively questing. You can swap them out and you can respec them at any time after 2-3 hours into the game.
It's honestly up to you. I don't think you have to bring your waifu w/you in BG3 if you want to raise affinity with them, but you might miss dialogue if you don't take your fave-y with you for certain interactions.
For metagaming/balanced party stuff, it doesn't really matter. I've found the BG3 is easy enough that you can basically take whoever and be totally fine even on Hard mode. Gale kinda sucks early game, but becomes much more powerful if you make him a Diviner/Abjurer and give him Haste at L5. Besides that, heavy martial parties kick ass early and stay strong throughout the game. Battle Master Laezel is really strong in the first Act, and Minthara is quite good as well. The strongest class imo is Paladin and Bard, so if you can slot both of those into your party, you'll have an easier time. Oh, and Will sucks because Warlocks are a loltier class without bullshit level dipping.

The only reason it wouldn't is because all that mocapping, animating and voice recordings couldn't have been cheap even with DIE money. Otherwise, hell yes this game will be remember for years to come and with the advent of AI it'll most likely become much feasible to accomplish with a smaller budget. Not that I'm necessarily too happy mind, I would much prefer if there was a dialogue box (still voiced) instead of full-on animations. Video game animations don't look good at all when it comes to emoting so just stop, I don't wanna look at what I personally perceive as "my face is tired"-tier shuffling around the whole time.
