I never realized how common it was for kids to go to their library to play runescape kek My local library was just a block over from my middle school so most parents had no problem with us going over there for hours until sun down. So many good memories at the library playing Runescape, adventure quest, and Oregon Trail
I'm really surprised how little my nice old librarian actually gave a shit about what we did as kids. I also played my fair share of Newgrounds hentai games on the local library computers and also charged my Runescape membership to the library's phone number.
>Newgrounds hentai games on the local library computers
I never did this but me and my friends did go on Newgrounds a bunch. I do have a distinct memory of a literal moron playing a match 3 hentai game on newgrounds at the library though. Watching the librarian kick him out was hilarious, never heard a guy screech so loud
I did play that one Sonic strip game and the Galaxy Angel RPG. 90% of the time it was Runescape with the boys though. I'm playing OSRS now and it's nothing like meeting up at the library on Friday nights and getting scammed out of my Rune essence
Looking back my librarians were fricking saints. Me and my friends would keep to ourselves and just play video games together mostly, but there was definitely some kids who would go there just to cause trouble. Place turned into a daycare from like 3pm-6pm everyday
My hometown was extremely small. Probably a population of 200 or so. There weren't any other kids to cause problems other than us and we just played games.
For me it was getting the monthly issues of CVG, one of the PS2 mags and Where's Waldo to be enamored by the highly detailed battle setpieces. It was a sad day when they stopped getting those gaming mags.
My most rented game from my local video store in the day was Final Fantasy 12, i remember seeing an advert for it in an issue of Game Informer and being obsessed with it. Never beat it.
I can still remember however passing this game on the shelf every time i went and wanting it so bad, i can still remember exactly where it was, but i never got it since they didnt have the first ones. I don't why I let that stop me since its not like I cared about playing the first 11 FF, I was just a moronic kid i guess. Never had a video rental account. Growing up those places looked so magical. Specially in teen rom coms it seemed like the thing to really tell if you where gonna hit it off or not. By the time I was a teen they where on their way out and I never got to experience it.
I also believe that video rental was destroyed on purpose to make way for streaming the "you own nothing" plan and not the other way around. When you actually look at these big realtor they all have the same story.
>Where actually doing well and growing. >many transitioning online well and following trends >some weird company that popped out of nowhere buys all the stock and takes control. >new CEO makes a bunch of nonsensical changes and financial decisions, likw how Toys R Us took out a massive loan it didn't need and couldn't pay back and put itself as collateral. >Entire franchise dies overnight. >now only way to get your items is the mega corp online store or the lone streaming service. >claim it's just cause the times be changing.
Seriously look in to it. It's really weird how so many of these stores have these same stories.
Yeah, cities where hit first. I camp a lot and live in Detroit. All the video rentals closed but the rual areas stayed a lot longer. My grandparents live on a farm and their's didn't close till about 2012 and still have an independent rental place that mainly sells porno.
I don't know why this is getting so much blowback. This is not at all unreasonable to think, given that it's been a very common corporate "competitive" move for a very long time now. Hell, Microsoft recently got outed for Phil Spencer planning to do something similar with Nintendo's shareholders circa 2020 to make them prime for an Xbox buyout.
>last video shop I went to died out in 2018 >got replaced by a jeet run furniture >now its a VR arcade
Netflix was the big killer and the general knowledge around internet streaming grew over that time. Had a uncle who would to rent out 8 - 9 movies a week until I showed him how to use a computer. The moment he figured out that the internet was for more than just porn he never went back. They were on borrowed time but I think that 3 year stint inside was the final nail for a lot of those who were stilling clinging on.

The next closest LC's to me is like an hour out, and as much as I miss their cheesy bread, I don't "2-hour drive" miss it.
