the last thing this series needs is more characters. they need to redesign existing characters to be more unique and deep. project m is a perfect example of how to breath new life into old characters in a way that satisfies casuals and compgays alike.
how many ultimate characters have a generic up special that makes them go up with a hitbox attached to them? how many have a down special counter? and a bog standard neutral special projectile? it's just boring. so very boring.

Smash's selling point is the characters. Trying to pretend anything else matters as much is how you get an Icons or that other 3D smash clone that died.
on some level players do not want generic characters otherwise people would jerk off the three mii characters and care about them more. therefore a proper moveset that plays in an interesting way is part of that selling point.
For me i have no motivation to try some smash clones where the characters are literally furry porn art. Something like nick and multiversus just seemed like shit to play.

EVERY level, not some. Dragon King may have become a decent series with some recurring mechanics but Smash Bros. was the better choice. The whole moveset > character bullshit doesn't last, especially if they lean on gimmicky movesets that can taint a whole character's viability or worse, you get an FE situation where the moveset is interesting and overude but the character is attached to an unwelcome stigma.
Nick All-Stars trying to be competitive or 'unique' killed it and that was the last game that needed to be competitive. Part of the fun in Smash is to make sure the game is fun on a casual level, and THEN you can add deeper mechanics for those who want to play competitively. Melee is literally the sweet spot with competitive play and casual fun. Sakurai failed (or does realize it but wants to bury it) to realize that starting with Brawl.
Pretty much this. Also melee abd 64 are not more fun just because they are casual friendly, but that they have good game feel and allow wacky shit.
I spend a lot of time with my friend in hyrule castle in melee and we laugh our asses off, teching from above 400 and seeing momentum anomalies. 4 onwards you could not tech above certain damage and they did not really even have momentum, so we could not even frick around.
I don't care to play competitively but the lack of jump momentum really kills the newer Smash games for me. That fundamental in platforming games is a huge litmus test for me on whether or not I'll keep on playing.
And they are not even small things to notice. How the frick can i dash with falcon at full speed, and then lose all my momentum when i jump? Its mind bogling.

I tried Project M a couple days ago. While it does improve 1v1 itemless it also fricking ruins 4 man ffa with items. The default game mode that everyone plays for fun. The game mode that is Smash's core identity. Imagine having some friends over and telling them that you can only play tryhard 1v1 3 stock final destination Fox itemless, because the autist modpack decimated the fun mode.

I'm in your boat but I've started to think there's just issues with the way smash is designed fundamentally.
There's not really a lot of ways a move can be meaningfully different in smash compared to a traditional fighting game. Shields are very strong and block from all directions so you can't have high/low properties. Shielding opponents barely suffer blockpush from most attacks so you don't really see moves that are specifically good on block unless they're a shield-breaking move that has some kind of wicked trade-off. Slower heavier attacks are rarely put on characters who can set up into them.
Even within the possibilities of plat fighters Rivals of Aether, Slap City, NASB 2, Rushdown Revolt, Multiversus, and Project M all end up exploring more interesting things in their much smaller rosters than Ultimate did with almost 90.
It's why Ultimate is the worst in the franchise.

i have a theory i'd like to test.
smash compared to other fighting games is more focused on characters in the game than the game's mechanics or its quality as a fighting game vs competitors.
this isn't to say other games like tekken 8 or sf6 do not have rostergayging, far from it, but the point is to say that most players of tekken or street fighter WILL buy the next entry even if it has the same characters as always because it represents a new set of challenges to learn. if sf6 was just sf2 characters i would've bought it regardless because the fighting system itself looked fun. and i say that as someone who would rather play sf3 or 4 characters if they were in the game but they are not. it is what it is, but that doesn't lower my interest in the game.
meanwhile it seems far more likely the average smash consumer would not purchase the next smash if the newcomers added were not up to par. ultimately, smash as a product is more about who's invited rather than the core game itself. i wager smash is less popular as an serious online matchmaking title than competitors like tekken or street fighter though i have no way to prove this. it's simply vibes based on how people talk about the game. an sf thread on Ganker will definitely be someone actually playing the game talking about their qualms, you know?

exactly, hence why now is the time to do major mechanical iterations on the core system. you can have lower numbers of new characters or even cut old characters if the game is new and exciting in a mechanical sense. but the question is how appealing is that to the typical smash consumer and what kind of iterations could be made without sacrificing core identity.
Depends how you do the cut, most morons will insist on nuking half the roster to shove in their own niche 1st party picks, but if you look at past illerations like Brawl and 4, you don't have to go full moron at all.
Just trim the fat, with a handful of characters no one is really going to miss (Chrom, Corrin, Dark Pit, Pichu, Young/Toon Link, Daisy, Bowser Jr. etc)

As someone coming at a splatoon rep from a completely unbiased perspective, I’ve always thought that an Octoling that simply uses all the weapons that the Inkling didn’t use would make for an excellent second rep. At the absolute worst it would be an Isabelle-tier character where half the moves are reused or very similar and the other half are entirely new. But since the Inkling in smash ONLY reps Splatoon 1, the Octoling would have a wealth of weapons to choose from, including the ones from Splatoon 1 that aren’t in the Inkling’s moveset plus EVERY SINGLE new weapon introduced in Splatoon 2 and 3.
I guess is to do with how Dark Pit has been tried so Octoling would seem more refreshing even though is entirely possible that they could just be echo status too
but at a glance, Octoling has much more clear differences to Inkling than Dark Pit to Pit, I guess Dark Pit would be more popular if he was more like Metaknight to Kirby, who technically is just a dark Kirby under the mask and wear a mask most of the time, a Spartan Helm would suit him

People hated Palutena for the same reason in Smash 4, then she became a top tier in Ultimate and now everyone pretends like they loved her from the beginning. You don't need to add anything to his design, just let him use his staff more instead of making him use le ebic multihit bow.

People hate Dark Pit because they slept on Uprising, there's literally nothing else to it. They assume he was a one off bad guy like Dark Link is even though he's ironically the most developed character in Kid Icarus.
Pittoo shouldn't be cut, he should be entirely reworked from the ground up the same way Falco was in Brawl, anyone who actually played Uprising will tell you the same thing. Rostergays don't think like that. If they don't like a character, they would rather remove them permanently instead of thinking of ways to make them more enjoyable.
