i replayed 1 and 2 for the first time in like 15 years a little while ago. 2 is still pretty miserable to play, but i forgot how good some of the later 1 levels are.
yeah, berserk lasts for the whole level, not just for the red screen effect. it actually is on a timer, but its something super long like 30 hours or something.

also forgot to mention i played thy flesh consumed and sigil for the first time. tfc is... fine. mostly. but sigil is fricking brutal. i have a feeling romero doesnt like the idea that uv is the "default" difficulty in the community.

he's probably fine with it, but wanted to provide a challenge to people that can deal with triple archviles, which is tough with DOOM1 monsters.
And troll people that underestimate him.
I got stoned, played through three or four levels, ate some funyuns, jacked off, and slept for 12 hours. I didn't enjoy it, and I never played it again,
Hurt me plenty is the default
Ultra Violence is the standard difficulty if you want a challenge
Nightmare! is fun only really if you know the maps already and UV is too easy. Respawning enemies will bog you down and win through attrition if you don't know where to go.
Being a Gen-X kid, from a (barely) working class family, in the early 90s. My dad bought the family an i386 computer (pre-Pentium), which was a big deal for us back then. Decent enough computer to play most DOS games.
My grandma came over to visit, spoiled me with a $10 bill. So I went to the mall (when malls were real special places to go), and went to Radio-Shack and found a copy of Doom for $9 bucks. It seems like a great deal at the time.... what I didn't realize was that it was the 'shareware' version of the game. And to get the rest I had to mail-order the other discs from iD, and it was going to be another $50....My parent wouldn't give me the money to do order it. So I just forgot about it, since going outside as a kid was still a thing back in those days.
Fast forward 20 years later and I saw all DOS-era DOOM games for dirt-cheap on Steam...total nostalgia fuel, and really I felt 'complete'.
got to E2M6: Halls of the Damned and dropped it
level is complete dogshit, and E2 is just weak in general. playing Blood right now and having way more fun
I've finished it more times than I can count. I can't get a friend to play past E1M1 though because it's not new and shiny enough.
No because the Build engine games are better. This turd is worthless.
episode 1 is bland and overrated
Poor man's Blake Stone
I have, not DOOM 2 though. I always get bored at the halfway point
For me it's the other way around. I have played trough DOOM II over 20 times but can't be bothered with DOOM I
Anon, I've been playing this game since it originally came out. Sad to hear that you have trouble beating old games.
is it normal that the berserk effect never goes away for the rest of the stage once collected once? Im playing using gzdoom

Well shit I never knew that, thats awesome.
It lasts for around 4 years. They didn't bother making the duration infinite, but close enough.
Literally hundreds of times.
i've never seen this cover for doom 2016
i always thought eternal was better
>mfw there's barely anyone left on this board who were born before Doom came out
i was 8 when doom 1 released
also forgot to mention i played thy flesh consumed and sigil for the first time. tfc is... fine. mostly. but sigil is fricking brutal. i have a feeling romero doesnt like the idea that uv is the "default" difficulty in the community.
>Most people browsing Ganker in 2003 weren't born when pong came out
people that grew up with doom were part of the internet era. people that grew up with pong still dont know how to use a smartphone.
i was born after scythe 1......

I love doom but I dislike almost every other FPS
I did, but I didn't play Plutonium or any other extra episodes in 2, or N64.
What version and difficulty do you recommend? I want to go as vanilla as I can for a first playthrough
Nightmare, unironically.
The one in the middle
chocolate doom and ultraviolence. dont play on nightmare. the game warns you it isnt fair for a reason.
Chocolate doom looks like what I wanted, thanks. Might play on nightmare for a second playthrough
Hurt me plenty is the default

crispy DOOM and UV for a pure experience.
If you want a classic feel and good .wad support, nugget is a great option.
>You never finished the game did you?
I did.... 20 years later.

I finished it at the age of ~9.
All episodes, no cheats.
Why haven't you?
And MetaDoom is epic
i have no idea why you shill this wad in every doom thread. its not even good.
I can appreciate its legacy but it's just not for me. Doom Eternal is more my style.
>gzdoom
>mouselook
>crosshair
>im too young to die
>hiding from a single fireball
2/10 got me to reply
strange cause im an eternal fan also, and eternal only made me more aggressive when playing classic DOOM.
while its def bait, mouselook has been in doom since day 1, I dunno why you guys cannot accept this
In 95 I remember as a kid playing it with mouselook on some shitty comp my parents had
not vertical mouselook, which is obviously what i meant because only mongoloid zoomers think doom didnt have mouse support.
of course i have, why wouldnt i?
I play all of the Doom games every couple years.
got to E2M6: Halls of the Damned and dropped it
level is complete dogshit, and E2 is just weak in general. playing Blood right now and having way more fun
I've probably played through more wads than anyone in this thread
Several times. I still think Quake is the superior FPS game.
not my favorite, but quake can always tussle with the best of them.
you can finish the base game episodes in less than 3 hours. its a joke, you can pretty much walk to the exit in some levels.
>not at the very least putting forth the effort to get 100% kills on every level
you didnt beat it.
>depressed and fricked up
I still finished several .wad games
Doom is Kino
