I'll never really understand why people like Carnival Phantasm so much. The comedy is so cringe. Like they keep repeating that dumb Phantasmoon bit over and over, half of it just being repetitions of previous jokes like with Len and the chikuwa and it's like, I dunno, it wasn't funny the first time and repeating it over and over doesn't really fix that.

Surprise and subversion of expectations is a staple of comedy. If you know exactly what's coming, then it undermines the punchline. Carnival Phantasm's punchlines are are incredibly obvious. You know what's coming, you know exactly how it's gonna happen. Sometimes, some comedy routines are built around that expectation, but if every goddamn joke is obvious from a mile away, then it gets stale. Repetition is only a worthwhile tool of comedy if used intelligently, but Carnival Phantasm is completely, utterly lacking in the tiniest bit of wit or cleverness.
The Back Alley Alliance skits are the most dry, basic-ass manzai routines I've ever fucking seen. Manzai's the de-facto core staple of Japanese comedy, meaning that pretty much every Japanese comedy is reliant on it to a certain extent. All the Back Alley Alliance skits do is just copy routines used by other people. Originality is already pretty lacking in manzai since just about everyone in Japan fucking does it, so the ones that are actually good at it stick out all the more. Most are pretty mediocre. The Back Alley Alliance skits are medicore.

The basement scene in Fate revolves wholly around the knife Kirei stabs in Shirou's old scars by revealing that all the orphans that got taken in from the church while he got adopted by Kiritsugu were turned into living corpses, drained of all their fluids for the sake of keeping Gilgamesh in this world. One of the most powerful lines in the VN is when Kirei says "That is right, Emiya Shirou. If you had not been taken by Emiya Kiritsugu, you would have been one of them. Do you understand? You alone survived, once again." Yet despite all the new guilt washing over him, Shirou rejects using the Grail to change the past, a powerful affirmation of his strength of character, one that helps Saber change her mind on her own wish to alter the past.

He even describes it as a twisted parallel to Avalon, since at that moment both of them are only alive thanks to the respective magics lodged in their torso.
And not once did you describe the heroine of the route who is the focus for 90% of the damn story. Just the ending and Kotomine literally fucking carrying the story again because he's one of the actual best written characters in Fate. Which Heaven's Feel does even better than the Fate route did

Ciel's route has legitimately some of the best scenes in the VN -Shiki staying the night and Ciel's conversation with him about kindness and atonement after he kills Arc and she stopped him from committing suicide, the entire fight between Shiki and Ciel in the school when Ciel's cold facade completely falls apart due to Shiki's sincere care for her and refusal to blame or hate her for having to kill him understanding the situation is forced on her, her being terrified of fighting an extremely pissed off Arc but doing so anyway to protect Shiki and getting her heart torn out in the process, Shiki going toe-to-toe with Arc a bit for possibly the only time in the novel, that scene of Roa accepting his death with dignity and the pages of his book fading away is pure kino, and the remnants of Nanaya sacrificing himself the same way SHIKI Ryougi did for Shiki in KNK so Tohno could live with Ciel, Ciel's crying over Shiki, etc, etc - There are plenty of great moments and Ciel, if you don't just take her at surface level is a very well-written, competent, yet tragic heroine with some of the most natural chemistry with Shiki and can be genuinely cute and endearing if you give her a chance. I, for one, think we should love and appreciate our Curry-senpai a bit more.
And I agree with you wholeheartedly anon, which is why I consider it the superior Near Route, flaws and all. Right from that first apartment scene you mentioned it takes on much more depth than "boy meets blonde gaijin" could ever hope to achieve.
Hyperbole aside, what Nasu went for in Arc's route was better executed in FSN, even with all the flaws the Fate route has. Hope the remake makes me eat my words even I'll never reconcile with the nuCiel design.
Nasu thought the Ciel route was so bad that he rewrote the entire thing for the remake.
The parts he rewrote were the copy-paste of Arc route.
To be fair he did sort of half-ass the first half of the Ciel route because it's just a fucking tumor on the Arc route for most of it. When the Ciel route was doing something different it was much higher highs but I wouldn't call it a consistent read at all. That's more or less why I like the Arc route better but prefer Ciel as a Heroine
It's not precisely that he got worse, but rather that Tsuki just handles a lot of things better than Fate does. Even things as simple as the "shadow war" concept you have in both works is handled much better in Tsuki than it is in Fate. In Tsuki it genuinely feels like the MC is witnessing things most people are completely unaware of and it adds to the mystery atmosphere of the setting, with the action mostly happening at night and with you finding things out alongside Shiki. In Fate it starts off like that but quickly drops it in favor of more action and exposition and it quickly feels like everyone's in on it except the MC and you.
I also vastly prefer Shiki to Shirou as an MC, because I felt like SHriou relies far too much on his inner monologues to establish his character and motives, to the point that in the anime adaptations where said monologues are missing he just feels like an alien who has trouble expressing regular feelings and motivations compared to everyone else (particularly in UBW).
There's more to it but in general I just believe Tsuki has a more solid setting that is handled better than Fate's and ends up making for a more interesting narrative.
Fate had good mystery plot with some good foreshadowing and twists

Nasu was exploring all of Fate's themes except for its core one (what it means to be a hero) and plenty others in Kara no Kyoukai and Tsukihime long before, largely because the Type-Moon world is founded on principle philosophical conceits that are consistent throughout TM's works. Souren Araya's motivation ties into Kiritsugu's and Archer's suppositions about saving people long before Fate ever came to be.
Most of his characters are variations of his previous writings. He mashes them together to create something new or tries to flash out a character he thought had bigger potential. Story themes and overall plot often mirrors something he wrote in the past too. He often has mono no aware present in his works. Originally he was inspired by Evangelion which shows in his works starting from Mahoyo and Angel Notes. Nowadays he doesn't even bother anymore since FGO allows him to reuse characters left and right.

That's an idea but I think HA's plot relies too much on the main character(s)' introspection and the subtle changes of narrator to work as an anime. The puzzle allegory also works better in an interactive medium in my opinion.

The catalyst always takes priority, but masters usually summon someone similar to themselves if the catalyst isn't strongly tied to a single servant (or if they just don't have one). For example, the Matou family just used a mirror they dug up in some Greek temple. It was a weak-ass catalyst, but they figured getting any hero from that time period would be a win. Sakura's personality was what zeroed it in on Medusa.
Medusa was summoned with a catalyst. She accepted the contract because she empathisized with Sakura, but she had a catalyst. From CM3:

Her story parallels Sakura's a lot, like IIRC she gets raped, then is cursed to become Medusa, then lives on an isolated island with her two other sisters and she has to constantly kill adventurers who come to their island with the intention of raping her sisters. She meets her end when she goes crazy, becomes a lovecraftian monstrosity and kills her sisters before being slain by Perseus. It is implied that she killed her sisters because becoming a monstrosity monkey paw'd her original desire of protecting her sisters from rapists to killing them because they cannot be raped and humiliated if they are dead. I'm probably misremembering it because it's been years since I read HA but I always thought it was weird that there were dozens, if not hundreds of adventurers who travelled to their island with basically no other intention but to rape.

Then he gets to hear the ideas of his friends and fans and build off them in turn.
There's not a person alive who could read Fate/Stay Night and not come out of it thinking, "What class would my favorite hero be? What would his noble phantasm do?" and the rest of the Fate series is practically spun entirely around that.

Many of these questions have been answered, over time.

And the reason people finally found out was due to Siegfried being available in Apoc and FGO leading to material books talking about this thing, finally leading to some people take a real closer look at the VN to find out that what Kotomine meant by "Line of Gold" in FSN was actually Das Rheingold.

Unfortunately ONScripter doesn't have the function, and neither does Ganker, but were I the editor, I would write the name in a different font when referring to another individual.
It does not actually matter. "Emiya" being written in Katakana for Archer does have some degree of subtext involved, but it's ultimately an idiosyncrasy of the Japanese language that's difficult to replicate in English. Writing his name in all caps was a compromise, but not a very natural one since in the context of the English language, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever to write his name that way. It's something that you're just gonna have to abandon in the localization process. Bear in mind that Shirou's name is written interchangeably as 「士郎」 or 「シロウ」, yet no one ever writes his name as "SHIROU" when this happens. The purpose behind writing his name this way is to further serve to symbolize his machine-like nature. By writing his name is Katakana, whether it's "Shirou" or "Emiya", it emphasizes this element of his character. But here's the thing: while writing someone's name in Katakana is unusual in Japan, it's not strictly 'incorrect'. It's somewhat rare for surnames, but some people do it for given names. On the other hand, writing someone's name in all caps is pretty odd. When you write Shirou/Emiya's name in all caps, it draws unnecessary attention to it. Writing someone's name in all caps is much more conHispanicuous than writing someone's name in Katakana.
As for the Shiki and SHIKI thing, it's even worse. The first instance of Capslock's name appearing in Tsukihime's name is when Shiki notices remnants of the game he, Akiha and Capslock used to play as kids where they write their names on things. Shiki observes that sometimes his name is written in Katakana, which he muses is because he was petty as a child and wanted to save time. In this case, the Katakana isn't meant to draw too much attention, since there hasn't been any hint that there's another "Shiki" running around at this point in the story. Once again, writing the name in Katakana isn't as conHispanicuous as writing the name in all caps.

Kanji/character wordplay is just one of those things the reader will have to try to get context for on their own. Raging Loop broke it down for the reader by breaking apart the kanji in the wordplay in a segment, but that's the best you can do really. They didn't try to 'localize' the scene.
Again, the issue lies in how unnatural it is to write someone's name in all caps. It's a poor compromise because at best it's objectively incorrect in the context of the narrative and at worst it directly runs counter to the intention. You're either arbitrarily bending the rules of the English language or ignoring the context of the original work.
They still needed to make a differentiation between Shiki and SHIKI as people. The caps does work for that, even if it doesn't work for anything else.
But, again, you're not actually supposed to do that. When Shiki first finds the Katakana-written names, he just muses that he was a petty child. It's a detail that you're not supposed to think too hard about when it first gets brought up. Writing your name in Katakana isn't that odd. Writing it in ALL CAPS is. ALL CAPS immediately sticks out.
